Well, you've read the notes, the notes were well cast and yet boring, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently on the casting cowch.

Good morning, all! I'm feeling a bit down emotionally today, and I'm not sure how much is the change in climate and a desire to hibernate and how much is tomorrow's birthday of someone for whom I care a great deal, knowing at the same time it's a hopeless affection.

I am back to the McGlinnventory after my Rainbow hiatus. I will be exremely happy when this round of the inventory is over and we have an idea of what's there before we start fine-tuning. I 've selected several scores and books I want for myself, and I believe my colleague William Hicks - who's also in the will - has done the same, but I'm also reticent about taking a volume out of a complete edition that might fetch the estate a good price. I also know that if I took everything I wanted, I'd need another room to store it or have a need to send another 50 cartons of books to Ohio.

After the McGlinnventory, I will take the crosstown bus to my pharmacy and pick up my industrial strength ibuprofen and my refill on one of my meds. When I get back here, I'll catch up on the latest TOP CHEF episode. And that's my day.

TOD:

Looks like a day off for me unless something arrives that requires immediate attention.

I forgot to mention it last night but I did receive in yesterday's mail the Blu-ray releases of Criterion's HOWARDS END and WINGS OF DESIRE. They don't come out until the first Tuesday in November, so I won't immediately dive into them. I do plan to do the standard DVD of WINGS OF DESIRE on Friday.

Would it work, yes. There are analog connections on Blu-ray players as well as digital connections.

Would there be any point? Well, the image would look wonderful and give the TV the best image it'd be capable of producing (the Blu-ray player would have to be set to deliver 480i resolution), but HD pictures on less than HD equipment is a waste of resources unless you someday plan to buy a new TV to replace the analog one. Then, the Blu-ray player could function at its maximum capacity.

This model that is being sold today on woot.com seems to lack an ethernet connection.  DR Matt, have you come across any Blu-Ray discs that take advantage of broadband connectivity in any interesting way?

No, not really. For me, the most convenient aspect of having an ethernet connection is that the player can get firmware upgrades over the net without having to download them onto a memory stick or burn a CD just for an upgrade. (And upgrades are important because the studios keep changing protection on their discs to prevent piracy and some discs won't play on older players without the upgrades.)

I got a little note from Disney saying the made-for-home video TINKER BELL AND THE LOST TREASURE on Blu-ray has been shipped. I might even get it tomorrow, and if I do, I'll likely do it before WINGS OF DESIRE. Tink comes out on October 27th, and WINGS on November 3rd.

I hope this new TInker Bell adventure is better than the first one. Of course, they had to establish her backstory in that one, so in the new one, we can just have the adventure.

Hmmm...looking further into this model's specs, I see that it does have a USB port and something called BD Live, which I guess does allow for internet connectivity via a network adapter (like my Tivo) so I guess it would allow for the firmware updates you mention.  Still, I'm seeing that there are better models available on Amazon for not much more money so I think I will pass on this woot offering.

I've been spending the past couple of nights catching up with a backlog of episodes of shows such as PROJECT RUNWAY, THE AMAZIN' RACE, etc  last night I watched the second and third episodes of FLASHFORWARD.  What I find with this show is that it seems like it's playing its cards out too quickly (I felt that in the first episode as well.)  The writing is also heavy handed and hammy (it's already reminding me of INVASION.)  But I like the cast and I do find the mystery intriguing enough to stick with it for now.

Yes DR JOSE - Mario plays the same character - there was even a nice flashback to the shower scene with him and Christian.

He is now working with the boys - specializing in lady parts.  The show is as crazy and illogical as ever.

Like DR MATTH I am weary of the wife drama on GLEE, but last night was a funny episode.  I guess Sue's theme music will be CARMINA BURANA for the rest of the season, and her dialog was very funny. Next week looks like it might suggest some anarchy that I hope students don't pick up in schools around the country.  I think Ryan Murphy - like most writers - forgets he is writing for teenage characters, not adult characters when he has some of the kids says things....but at least there was no Kristin Chenowith to completely throw the balance of the show off.  Hopefully she won't come back or be referenced again.  Once more and no matter what - I'm done.  I'm glad she has her fans, but include me out.  :P

That's my problem with Blu-Ray and why I hate it.  It is too high maintenance.

With DVD, even with a Blu-Ray player, you just pop it into the machine and within a few seconds, it plays.  There is no upgrading firmware or anything like that.

[Frankly, I know nothing about how to get or do the upgrades.  Yes, I admit that I'm a technical dunce, and I don't have the time or desire to deal with upgrades every few weeks.]

The other night, I started to watch SNOW WHITE on Blu-Ray.  The opening trailers played okay, but when it came time to watch the film itself, it just froze for 10 minutes, and the digital readout on the machine said "Slide Show".

Finally, I gave up and watched the DVD disc that came with the set.  It looked great.

I'll stick with DVD on my Blu-Ray player.

I am having a tough time stomaching Mario Lopez these days on Extra.  I don't know whether he is being scripted or not, but his bitchy "off-the-cuff" comments about the celebreties the show reports on are making him out to be a colossal sleezeball.  It's getting to the point where I'm considering tuning out and missing his once-a-week shirtlessness.
Title: Re: CASTING THE CAST

LOL....Mario is just waiting for the next gig.  I think they're probably scripted, but I don't watch the Entertainment show he "reports" on - so I can't be sure.

I am watching SENIOR PROM on TCM.....never saw it before.  Interesting cast including Tom Laughlin.

Druxy, I used to get that "Slide Show" problem on my old Samsung (IIRC--I've had 3 BD players).  A firmware upgrade solved it.  Firmware is very easy--either do it over the internet if you're connected, or just order a disc from the manufacturer and pop it in.  It's not a big deal, and believe me I'm a technophobe about stuff like that.

Today begins our jaunt to Wisconsin, or at least the preps for it (we leave in the middle of the night tonight).  Anyone who cares to send flying vibes to me will be blessed with untold fame and fortune.  ;)

I am with you Druxy, as far as the BD technical updates...that is one thing that has kept me from investing in it. I would get kind of cranky if the movie wouldn't play until I did an update. That, and the fact that there are so far very few movies on BD that I want, yet.

Someday, perhaps.

Click on Search at the top of the page.

Set your search parameters but use Advanced Search to do this.

Click Choose a Board to Search In and look at the boards where it might be including Daily Notes and Archives.

Put in GUMNAAM in Search For and then click Search. You should get two pages of results with the latest being Septemeber 2009 and the earliest being September 2004

I need Dear Nurse Jane here at our house today.  Aside from the fact that it's a typical rainy, cold fall day, both Mum and I are down with something (hopefully nothing that lasts).
Mum was fighting chills and other unseemly things late last night; I'm stuffed and trying to get some solid food into myself.
With everything that is going around, I have a call into Mum's physician to see what she has to say about the situation(s).
Last week, both Mum and I did get our flu shots. . .

Keely Smith is in a recent film I worked on, doing Old Black Magic with Louis Prima. One of the few great performances that didn't get cut, probably because one of the people involved in the film was also involved with her!

She's been mentioned for the revival of PROMISES PROMISES and I think it's pathetic: Fran Kubelik is a young lady in a bad affair, not an old whore.

And as part of "The Bens" (along with Ben Kweller and Ben Lee): "The Bens - EP" (Just 4 tracks, available via iTunes)

*I also like Ben Folds' cover of "Golden Slumbers" from the "I Am Sam" soundtrack - well, at least the album that's comprised of all Beatles' covers.

The Christmas album by Pat Boone which a friend brought over for Anthony to transfer to CD is also on the Dot Label (part of Paramount Pictures). Mr. Boone, according to the sleeve in the LP jacket, recorded many records for Dot.

Michael, here are entries from March and October of 2003. The board was still in the old format at that time.

I did a Web search instead of searching through the board. I entered Gumnaam in Google and Bruce Kimmel and the March link came up. Gumnaan and Haines His Way brought the October link. Gumnaan and HHW brings up the same links and a bunch of other stuff.

Much thanks to you Ben!!

Hmmm.. Since I've never seen the movie-in-question, I guess was just making a comment about DR MBarnum.  ;)

Well, I had quite a surprise when I got in from lunch. I was sitting happily watching a PERRY MASON episode, planning on watching a whole bunch of them this afternoon when the doorbell rang, and it was the UPS man holding, you guessed it, the FIVE Fox Blu-rays that are only 9 days past street date.

Still, I immediately put on MIRACLE ON 34th STREET (1947) and was charmed all over again with its love and spirit and warmth and charm. I also had time to listen to a good chunk of Maureen O'Hara's commentary.

Nope - all backing-up is on our property is a tricky maneuver to get the car pointing out of the drive way. One drives straight back until the sewage grinder is abeam the rear car door, then cut the wheels right to back up to the pine tree under the squirrel feeder - being careful not to plunge off our own retaining wall into the wetlands; next you start forward, cutting the wheels to the left to avoid running over the embedded propane tank; at the top of the drive cut sharply to the right - if you cut too sharp you take out our mail box or the other retaining wall takes out the fender; if you don't cut sharp enough you will take out the mailbox across the street.

After mastering this evolution, Woody's driving test was a snap!

The actor who played the lead at the first table reading was someone the lyricist loved and had worked with - we saw no other real candidates at that time, and the author loved the kid's quality.  I warned both then that I knew he was not good enough to pull off the role, and that proved to be the case for about half the reading.  He's a good egg and a good singer, but any naturalness (essential in this character) always seems actory and forced.  When Patrick came in and read everyone knew immediately just how right I was.  I mean, they didn't even want to read other people at first and I told them I would not direct the show without having proper auditions for every role, and that means seeing more than one person.

Back from the mix fix - I did most of Brent's little one-word fixes - there were about five and we were able to do them easily.  I also made some adjustments for the MD, but those were very minor and I certainly left more than half his notes undone as they were completely weird and unnecessary and would have really harmed the album - Brent knew that.

If anyone is looking for an inexpensive Blu-Ray player, www.woot.com has one today for $134.99.

I was thinking about this, but since Blu-Ray discs cost so much more than regular DVD discs, I'm gonna pass.  However, I did buy the Side Deal (http://www.cowboom.com/deal-of-the-day.cfm?aff=woot):  a 7-megapixel camera for only $29.95 (and $5 shipping)!  My digital camera went belly-up a few weeks ago and I need something.  This camera can record video (which my previous camera could also), but this can record the sound for the video, which my previous camera could not.  That alone makes it worth it for me. :)

I just hope that it's not a crap camera. ::)

At least Nolan Funk will not get unanimous pans.  The Record said about the ATC-abused actor:

"Nolan Gerard Funk, meanwhile, adds a bit of spice to Birdie, who's usually a remote, vaguely drawn rock-and-roll menace to decent society.  Funk makes him distinctly unappetizing - wearing only Jockey shorts, he guzzles beer that runs slobbily down his body - heightening the joke of the mindless adoration of his young fans."

I guess they wanted more 15 minutes of fame:

The child was identified as Falcon Heene, the son of Richard Heene, a Colorado weather-chaser. The boy and his family — mother, Mayumi, and brothers, Ryo and Bradford — first appeared on the ABC series "Wife Swap" on Oct. 3, 2008 and were voted back for the 100th episode of the show, which aired on March 13, 2009.

Bill Irwin, john Stamos, Gina Gershon.

Human Again (Beauty and the Beast)

Added to the film re-release from the Broadway show; unfortunately they did not add back my favorite - If I Can't Love Her.

der Brucer

Well, in my defense, this song was originally written for the movie and cut.  They added to the Broadway show, then added it back to the movie. :)

Some of my advanced eighth graders used to snicker when we read "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" when Mrs. Mitty reminds Walter not to forget his rubbers. [sigh] The world was once so much more innocent.

I think I was the only kid in the theater that didn't laugh during BYE BYE BIRDIE when Mrs. Peterson told Albert to be sure and pack his rubbers.

The story of that kid and the balloon reeks of something or other.  Now the kid is saying he hid in the attic because his daddy scolded him.  WHAT KIND OF WORLD ARE WE LIVING IN????  His DADDY SCOLDED HIM???  Oooh, that's terrible.  As I said in my rant of the other day, parenting is at an all time low and children are as well.  The daddy apologized to his child for scolding him, even though he was right to scold him - heaven knows we shouldn't scold our children when they do something wrong because if we do they might actually learn something.  That is, if any of this stupid story is true in the first place.  Shame on these people, shame on the parents and the children and shame on the media for being the first-class first-drawer jerks they are.  Drop 'em all on an island, like Lost, and let them feed on each other until there's nothing left.  And if you'd like to know how I REALLY feel, just ask.

I am probably wrong (although I usually leave that to Jack), the WSJ critic talked about the two enduring standards that came from BBB being PUT ON A HAPPY FACE and A LOT OF LIVIN' TO DO.  However, I would wager that 100 times as many people would know the song KIDS, than have ever heard of A LOT OF LIVIN' TO DO.

Next came tonight's episode of BONES. An enjoyable murder mystery, but I found it more graphic than usual for the show. I love the relationship between Booth and Bones, but the FBI boss who was interested in Brennan needed more encouragement!

I dislike the intern/girl friend of Sweets VERY much. She is my LESAT favorite intern, and I was hoping we were rid of her. From the looks of tonight's show, she's going to continue in a regular rotation with the other interns.

Title: Re: CASTING THE CAST
Post by: FJL on October 15, 2009, 10:29:32 PM
It's not much of a cause, just a few posts in response to a mob mentality that irked me (I know you know the feeling) and now that the BIRDIE reviews are out, it turns out that Funk doesn't need anyone to take him up as a cause.

It was one thing for people to say he's not right for a role, but for the chatters en masse to say he can't act is silly when there are examples of him acting on screen quite expertly all over the place.

I still think the casting of a hot-looking Albert, one of People's Sexiest Men Alive John Stamos, sounds giggle-worthy even in concept.  It reminded me of the MAD Magazine satire of VIRGINIA WOOLF where they talked about how ugly they'd made Liz Taylor for that film.  And concluded with:  We wouldn't want our MOTHERS to look like that; our girlfriends yeah, but not our mothers.
Title: Re: CASTING THE CAST
Post by: bk on October 15, 2009, 10:35:56 PM
It's not only casting Stamos, it's then making him look and act like a nerd, like Matthew Broderick in How To Succeed (or anything else subsequent to that).  Dick Van Dyke didn't need glasses and he wasn't a nerd - he was, in fact, a funny, charming, human, and REAL leading man.
