IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

Kritzerland is proud to present its latest release – a brand new, shiny holiday treat!

BRENT BARRETT

CHRISTMAS MORNINGS

It’s a Kritzerland Christmas this season, with the wonderful Brent Barrett back with his third solo album, following his critically acclaimed The Kander and Ebb Album and The Alan Jay Lerner Album.  Christmas Mornings will put you in the Christmas spirit all year ‘round, with such classics as “The Christmas Song” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” “Winter Wonderland” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas/A Place Called Home” “Christmas Waltz/It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” and other great Yuletide hits, including two brand new Christmas songs to warm your heart.

Brent Barrett has been a leading man on Broadway, in London, in Las Vegas, and all over the world in such shows as Grand Hotel, Annie Get Your Gun (in which he starred opposite Reba McEntyre), Camelot, The Pajama Game, Candide, Dance A Little Closer, Closer Than Ever, and many others.  He starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom Of The Opera in its record-breaking Las Vegas run, and was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance in the London version of the hit revival of Kiss Me Kate, which was taped for and shown on PBS and which is currently available on DVD.    He is currently reprising his role of Billy Flynn in the Broadway company of Chicago, a role he’s played to great acclaim all over the United States.

Christmas Mornings is produced by Bruce Kimmel, with musical direction and arrangements by Christopher Denny, orchestrations by Larry Moore, and Brent Barrett co-producing.  It’s an intimate, beautiful, heartfelt, and fun look at the sights and sounds of Christmas by one of the best singers working today.   It’s a perfect stocking stuffer and an album that’s sure to put you in the holiday spirit.

The first 100 orders placed through Kritzerland will be signed by Brent.

The price is $17.98 (plus shipping).  CDs will ship by the first week of December – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.  On street date, Christmas Mornings will also be available at Amazon, CD Baby, and iTunes and other digital outlets.  Brent will be appearing in New York at Birdland on December 13 and 14 at 7:00 to launch the CD.

And here comes announcement number two.  You know the drill - it's the price plus shipping (and remember, two CDs ship for the same as one - 3.75) payable via paypal.com to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

HARRY PALMER, I PRESUME

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition soundtrack release – two great scores on one great CD!

BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN Music Composed by Richard Rodney Bennett

and

THE FINAL OPTION Music Composed and Conducted by Roy Budd

From the early 1960s, when a certain character named James Bond made his debut on the silver screen in Dr. No, right up through the end of the decade it was hard to escape the world of secret agents, whether in books, serious films, spoofy films, or TV shows.   One of the most memorable creations during that time was the “unnamed hero” of author Len Deighton’s series of spy novels, which began with The Ipcress File.  Ipcress was made into a film, produced by Bond producer Harry Saltzman, starring Michael Caine as the now named Harry Palmer.  The film was such a success (and quite different in feel from the Bond films, despite having a score by Bond composer John Barry) that it spawned two sequels – Funeral In Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain.  By the time of Billion Dollar Brain the spy genre was slightly on the wane so the wane in Brain stayed mainly on the plain. The film was directed by Ken Russell before he became KEN RUSSELL, the enfant terrible of cinema.  It’s a very entertaining yarn with a terrific cast and an absolutely stellar score by Richard Rodney Bennett.  Mr. Bennett had already done the brilliant score for John Schlesinger’s film of Far From The Madding Crowd (Oscar nomination), and would follow this film with a series of memorable scores for such films as Murder On The Orient Express (Oscar nomination), Yanks, Enchanted April, Four Weddings And A Funeral, Equus, Lady Caroline Lamb, Nicholas and Alexandra (Oscar nomination) and many others.  His score for Brain is filled with wonderful energy and great themes (none more so than the electric main title theme), and is one of the highlights in a career filled with them.

The Final Option (called Who Dares Wins in the UK) came out in 1982 and was a then-topical political thriller starring Lewis Collins, Judy Davis, Ingrid Pitt, Richard Widmark, Edward Woodward, and Robert Webber.  The film has some exciting and taut action set pieces, main titles by Bond guy Maurice Binder (as does Billion Dollar Brain), and a rousing and wonderful score by Roy Budd.  Budd was a terrific composer and wrote great scores for Get Carter, Fear Is The Key, Catlow, Paper Tiger, The Carey Treatment, The Stone Killer, The Black Windmill, Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, The Wild Geese, and others.  His score for The Final Option is grand fun and a must for Budd fans and Budd neophytes.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the first week of December – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

That's too bad about the loss of your CDs, George. Hopefully they will turn up.

I personally wouldn't file a claim with the insurance, though. Your rates will go up, and they won't give much value to used CDs, I'm sure.

DR George - WHOA!

Are you sure the boxes aren't over at your sister's house? ;)

In any case...

Make one or two more passes through your garage, take notes, lots of notes, and then call the non-emergency number for the police in your area and your insurance company. You may also want to check with your neighbors and/or landlord to see if any other robberies have been reported in your neighborhood.

Aw, DR George, that totally sux!  It's bad enough when regular CDs vanish but cast recordings go out-of-print and are difficult and expensive to replace.

But mi colección de CD es tu colección de CD.  If there's anything you could use a copy of as a temp replacement, let me know.  If I have it, you got it...

But just in case--

Monday morning greetings!  Another crisp, clear day here in SW Ohio.

Today I have to take my engagement ring to our jeweler because I discovered a bent prong yesterday morning.  Richard and I decided it would be better not to wear it than to lose the diamond.  I'm wearing another ring with my wedding band, but it's not the same.

Me, too, DR DAW!  I've known several women who have lost their engagement diamonds and didn't realize it until it was too late.

I was pretty diligent about that until the store where we bought our rings went out of business.  We recently discovered that the proprietor of that store is now a partner in another jeweler in a nearby community.  We were very glad to find him again.

I was a little disappointed that there was no real challenge that involved the world's tallest building in Dubai other than taking an elevator ride up there.  But the desert and indoor ski/snow challanges made up for it.

At this point, my favorites are the Ken and Barbie couple, the former Miss America and her hubby and the Globe Trotters.  There's no team left that I actively dislike, but I guess I would say that the Poker girls and the young couple (with the girl who freaked about going up the tall building) are my least favorites.

Good morning, all! I slept laye, nearly 9 am, and I've been busy with emails concerning Live Begins at 8:40 and all the madness this project still generates, laundry, and returning emails. Today I will be working at home, perhaps go to the NYPL when the laundry is over, and stop down at the show tonight.

I am quite excited about hearing Mr Barrett's album, and I hope it sounds lke what I magined during the arranging process. The problem with recording in LA and not being there, is that I have to rely on others to fix/adjust my errors in judgment or taste, and I rely on BK and Chris Denny for that. I've had several bad surprises from London recordings because I only hear the final mix and think, why wasn't I consulted before it was finalized? I got a peculiar phone call from BB last week about billing, so i'm curious to hear how it sounds and how the biling ended up.

I agree with a lot of what you wrote. I loved seeing dubai and seeing the desert and indoor skiing.

I really dislike the young couple. I should like them. They seem nice. They are attractive. BUT they come in last every single time (well almost). And i was so sick of listening to that girl whine. And i think it will get much worse next week from what they showed. They are not good competively at all!

I also really think the barbie and ken. And they ARE good competitors.  But i'm not crazy about the globetrotters. They have not done anything to bug me. But they just don't stand out to me.

I was also sick of that loud mouth lawyer. Although his wife really bugged me this week. Could they be any less competitive? She kept saying she didn't know anything. They had a map!  They funny thing was at the end when the loud mouth guy should have been mad he handled that so well. I was semi impressed!

The miss america and hubby actually are growing on me. He was really sweet this week and they showed their competitive nature.

I don't hate the female poker players. I think they are funny. But they are not good racers at all.

A question for DR George:

Do you have an inventory of what was in the missing boxes?  If so, distribute a list of the contents of what is missing to area shops that buy such things.  They may have already made contact with the thief/thieves...but if they bought items from him/them, the store might have a record of who sold the items.  The police would be interested in that...and you might get a little bit of satisfaction.   You might even be able to recover some of your items.

I caught up on many TV programs over the weekend as I plowed my way through my DVR cache (which was 82% full...so lax was I in actually watching any programs last week).

One show, a favorite, was last week's episode of "Criminal Minds."   I have to say I was shocked by the content and more than a little upset by the amount of senseless, brutal violence the show contained...and continued to replay.  It was about three men -- sociopaths, all -- who randomly select a victim, beat him senseless and then take him to his home where they then beat everyone there senseless...and all are beaten to death...while the three men videotape their activities.  Later on, they sit and watch their video with relish...enjoying it much the same as they might an auto rally or wrestling match.

Yes, I know there are such people in this world.  Yes, I know its "intent" is to make folks aware of the methods by which law enforcement sniffs such folks out and puts them away.

But what I don't know is WHY it's necessary to show so much violence...I don't know WHY it's considered okay to be oh-so-clever in showing --  to people who may be just as sociopathic as the characters who are in the fictional episode -- the means by which they "might" be caught if THEY commit heinous crimes.

It's rather like CNN or Fox or CNBC (or whomever) giving out details of a pending military mission...details that the whole world can see...and HAVE SEEN...time and time again.

Is anyone else sick and tired of TV becoming a primer for criminal activity and for being a road map around U.S. strategic military intent?

Aughghghgh!

DR George, I am sorry to hear about this theft, but I have several questions, such as how did they get into your garage? thry only took show CDs? Do you know any dishonest musical theatre queens in Washington? What would they do with these CDs? Where would they sell them? If it is indeed a theft, you need to get to the police ASAP and file a report.

DR George, I know how you feel. My house in Marietta was burglarized 3 times and sometime you don't even realize that things are gone until much later, when you go looking for something. It's like you're victimized all over again, and it makes you wonder what else is missing that you haven't noticed yet. I'm hoping maybe they're hiding somewhere...fingers crossed!

Today I will be working at home, perhaps go to the NYPL when the laundry is over, and stop down at the show tonight.

I am watching SENIOR PROM (1958) the Columbia teen romance musical that JRand mentioned the other day....much different then Columbia's other teenage musicals...SENIOR PROM has lots of nifty Big Band lounge music (Les Elgart is one of the performers) and several Broadway like musical numbers, wherein most of Columbia's other films for the youth market were rock and roll driven.

And who knew Jill Corey was still around and even has her own webpage.

I wish I knew who played the hunky, tall college guy that Barbara Bostock's character is messing around with...he is dreamy!

PS: Barbara Bostock completely steals this movie!

DR George - are you sure the boxes were stolen?  I mean, if they were all together, and marked specially, why wouldn't a thief have taken all of the boxes together?

My numbered musical theater boxes weren't all next to each other in my garage, but in three different areas amongst all the boxes.  The boxes that were taken were all near the door that is opposite the big garage door (and hidden from the street) and I assume that they just took whatever was closest and easiest.

That's too bad about the loss of your CDs, George. Hopefully they will turn up.

I personally wouldn't file a claim with the insurance, though. Your rates will go up, and they won't give much value to used CDs, I'm sure.

Thanks, Laura.  Friends of mine have said that they've made claims and then their insurance was cancelled!  I did call and they said to file a police report and to get a complete (as possible) list of everything that is missing and the replacement value.  That's gonna take some time! :-\

George, I had a friend who made a claim for a laptop stolen out of the car. Their house and car insurance was canceled, and they had a hard time getting new insurance because they now had a record of filing claims. It cost them a lot more in premiums than replacing the stolen laptop.

That's what I'm afraid of.  I know that it could be several thousand dollars in replacement value, but insurance sometimes seems to be a racket.

Yes, I'm 100% certain that they are not at my sister's AND that I never took them out of my garage. :) And I did tell the property manager.  I didn't think to ask if anyone else was robbed.

Then I watched another BONES episode. This was the one with Booth abducted by the Gravedigger (who had abducted Bones and Hodgins last season which was one of my very favorite episodes), and we finally find out who the Gravedigger was. I liked the show, but the whole ghost/hallucination storyline wasn't my favorite.

When I got in from lunch, I watched TINKER BELL AND THE LOST TREASURE on Blu-ray. I was pleased it was better than the first one. Still for the very youngest ones in the family (I'd say ten and under), but it was an entertaining little story with some nice life lessons for kids about friendship and responsibility and perseverence.

Beautiful looking disc with a couple of OK tunes.

What a busy little day this light day has turned out to be.  Did the long jog, did my errands and whatnot, drove to the tape vault only to find out that my tapes had been erroneously given to someone else last Friday - they're coming back and I'll have to get them later in the week, which is fine.  Then I had lunch with Cason at my beloved Dino's, picked up two packages, but neither of which were as important as the three that are wayyyyy overdue.  Then we addressed all the packages, Cason is now attaching postage, and then we're going to Costco for some big boy waters and sodas.

Thanks Ron, Matthew, Larry, Edisaurus and Dan (the Man) for questions and things to think about.  Let me see if I can answer some of the questions:

I didn't have a specific inventory of what I had in the boxes.  The musicals will actually be easy to figure out.  They were in alphabetical order in the boxes and I can make a list of what I still have...then just try and remember what's missing.  I hope that that'll work.  The DVDs, however, will be harder.  I know some large sets that I owned (the complete "Space 1999," four seasons of "Soap," things like that), but I don't remember everything that I had in there.  When I was going through a couple of boxes that I still have, there were some titles that I didn't remember buying at all. :-\

My garage was locked but I don't know when/if I ever left it unlocked.  I wouldn't think so because I have to make sure that it catches when I close it.  It doesn't always stay closed the first time I shut the door, so I always have to check it and make sure.

Otherwise, I don't know how they got into my garage.  My building was re-roofed a couple of months ago and they did take off the roofing material over the garage, but if someone from that crew did take my CDs and DVDs, others on the crew would've known about it and then they all would have to be in on it.  That just doesn't seem plausible.  When I told the property manager, she said that she trusted the workers very much.  That doesn't mean that they couldn't have done it, but it just doesn't seem very likely.

I called one local used CD store, and the guy I talked to said that he did most of the buying for his store.  He didn't remember anyone coming in with any cast album recordings anytime recently.  Of course, that was only one store, so you never know.

The skylight was swapped out a couple of weeks after my roof was reshingled, and the neighbors that I have on both sides now (a Joni Mitchell reference) haven't been there very long.  I don't know anything about the previous renters.

DR George:    Beating this already dead horse...is there something that you or someone else was doing in the garage that might have resulted in the boxes being moved....either someplace in the garage (behind or on top of something) or in an unexpected place?

No.  The boxes in my garage are in a clump and only three boxes deep (going lengthwise in the garage), so there's no way to hide them.  I looked all through my house and there's no way/where that anything could be hidden there, either.

Well, it seems the "VERY religious" PTA VP at the grandlads Middle School has taken up the time honored tradition of Book Burning. The PTA is sponsoring a Scholatics Book Fair, and the self-appointed Guardian of Morals has already pulled a bunch of books from the fair.

The Evil Things:

The Hunger Games - a New York Times best seller which is highlighted in our local book store on their Teen Fiction shelf and was on the Sussex County Suggested Summer reading list for Middle Schools.

The Chronicles of Valamir Tod - The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), put The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod on their 2008 Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers selection list.

(I bought a copy to read first.)

Pride & Prejudice and Zombies - which I'm thinking of ordering from Amazon.

Unfortunately my DIL is taking her side! She doesn't think 12 year olds are teens and doesn't think their parents should be burdened with the proplem of junior bringing home inappropriate reading material. She refuses to let Alex read Goosebumps books because they're below his reading level - well, reading level-wise he's ready for Forever Amber and Lolita.

The there is this:

"Just because he has the ability to understand complex issues does not mean I want him to feel obligated to read adult situational things that he is not ready for.  Granted he is a bit immature for his age but I don’t want to push these situations on him.  So Pride and Prejudice with  or without zombies is out for him!".

Well, not to worry what middle-school boy would every read Pride & Prejudice! (Well, maybe Larry did).

I swear, self appointed censors are more annoying than a bent prong!

SPOILER WARNINGS!!!

Thank Gawd!  I was getting so sick of that lunkhead and his whiney partner!  As one of the Poker Gals once said, how did this idiot ever get to be a lawyer?

I was a little disappointed that there was no real challenge that involved the world's tallest building in Dubai other than taking an elevator ride up there.  But the desert and indoor ski/snow challanges made up for it.

At this point, my favorites are the Ken and Barbie couple, the former Miss America and her hubby and the Globe Trotters.  There's no team left that I actively dislike, but I guess I would say that the Poker girls and the young couple (with the girl who freaked about going up the tall building) are my least favorites.

SPOILER CONTINUES

I pretty much agree with you.  I'm liking the poker girls better than I did.

We have good news and bad news about our NYC apartment situation.  The good news is that we received the key in the mail today.  The bad news is that I also received an email from the landlady apologizing for the fact that the elevator, which has been undergoing renovations, did not pass inspection and will likely not be operational for some or all of our stay.  She IS offering to discount our rent for the days that it's out, but here's what I said in my email back to her:

"As an out-of-shape baby boomer who just watched the Mad Men episode in which Don and his boss had to walk up 23 flights, I'm not thrilled about the elevator news.  We'll get back to you."

As Richard points out, 5 flights isn't nearly as bad as 23.  And there don't seem to be a lot of alternatives at this point.

Speaking of favorite sites -

I missed Michael Musto's blog last Friday and it turned out I was mentioned, or at least he mentioned & linked the I'M STILL QUEER video from a few months back.  That was fun!

George, I am so sorry about your missing recordings.

And I have an alibi for eveyday that it could have happened!

Thanks Tom...and I have no doubt that you can account for your whereabouts. ;)

Thanks for the input, DRs der Brucer, Cillaliz, and Jose.  The discount she's offering is, in effect, one night free (assuming the elevator is out all five nights we're there).

OK, CNN has an article that says "Balloon family feels under seige"  Well duh, you do some big hoax to get attention and you'll get attention.  Maybe not the attention you were seeking, but attention nonetheless.

A six-year-old will lie to keep himself out of trouble. But if you want to find out the truth about someone else, ask a six-year-old!

Spent most of the evening watching BONES episodes. I am now one episode into disc five (there are six discs in the set), so my little experiment has worked out very well with watching BONES while I was working on other projects. Of course, I had already seen all these episodes (well, the one with John Pyper-Ferguson as a blind man I must have missed last year; I didn't remember it at all.), so I wasn't trying to keep running story arcs straight since I was already familiar with them. Not sure how many more episodes are left on the set. I didn't count, but I will tomorrow.

I did save time to watch last night's MAD MEN. The Don-romance stuff I found very uninteresting, but I enjoyed everything else about the episode including Peggy and Paul's "rivalry" for a Western Union idea and Betty's discovery of the contents of the drawer she's been trying to get into for years. Looks like Joan is back next week. There are only three episodes left in the season, and Kennedy's assassination is certainly looming. Wonder how the episode will be framed by that upcoming event?

The show was great tonight! There were a couple of changes that surprised me. I saw my old friend Michael Feinstein afterwards. I don't think we'd seen each other since 1987 or so and he seemed to like the show. He looked great. I felt old and decrepit. I also saw my old friend Greg MacKellan who runs the 42nd Street Moon Company in San Francisco. He's in town this week for NAMT.

The new finale works fine. I think the ending I did worked equally well but it makes no never mind which makes the final cut.

Certainly they need to take a careful look at parents who make their children part of a hoax like this and then ask them to lie.

Finished with my viewing for the evening.  Have listened to the Brent master - had a few notes, so he'll do those and then off it will go to the pressing plant.  Am now listening to the new Jerry Goldsmith release, a two-fer that includes IQ and Seconds.  IQ is later Jerry and not too interesting - basically a lot of tracks quoting Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, which gets really old after track six.  I'm just waiting for Seconds, one of Jerry's greatest scores, IMO.

I survived the Attack of the Vampire, although my neck is still a bit sore. (Lots of needles.)  No problems from Awful Ava, the nurse, who just sat there, doing absolutely nothing, but apparently that is what she was supposed to do. I spoke to the surgeon a bit. He said it looks like a cyst (best scenario), but, of course, we won't know until we get the biopsy report back next week.
