Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no balls, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they currently are looking for their balls.

Morning all. Back in the office on Day Two after my "cleansing".

I have a stack of CDs but it's hard to listen to them when I have to get up and go to different floors and move around so I don't know what I'll listen to today.

Larry, I hope you're feeling better and better. Anthony is around today if you're heading downtown and want to pick up your CDs.

Good morning, all! The cold and the godawful gunk inside my sinuses refuse to depart willingly. I really am not happy about this at all.

DR Ben, I am not heading far today; first up, the McGlinnventory, which is currently happening on Thursdays and Fridays because of the paralegal's problems with baby sitters, followed by a trip to Music Theatre International to drop off the second proof of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, Act one. It looks great! Then it's right up to physical therapy and when I get back here, laundry, which is badly needed.  Are you two around this weekend? I've got three more cassettes I would like to turn over to Anthony. While I have the money, I can even pay him in advance for them.

My LoC check finaly arrived yesterday and so I am very happy for the nonce.

Shocking news, DR Cillaliz.  My condolences to the family.

I had meant to extend my condolences, too, and I forgot!

My sister-in-law and chef par excellence is worried about my great-nephew Jayden. My hometown seems to be out of the H1N1 vaccine and he suffers from auto-immune problems. It seems to me there should be a priority list of some sort, but the answer appears to be, according to idiots like Michelle Bachman, there is, if your income's high enough.

Yes, my work project today is ICE AGE: DAWN OF DINOSAURS. No, not the Blu-ray. Fox never sent it. My supervisor received a review copy of the single disc DVD and sent that to me to review, so that's what I'll be working on this afternoon. Doesn't appear to be any bonus features at all on this movie-only disc. Thus, it should make for a short afternoon of work followed by an afternoon and evening of great leisure viewing including much on the DVR and, of course, NORTH BY NORTHWEST on Blu-ray this evening. Can't wait for that!

DR Jane, re: the H1N1 shots here.

Yes originally they said they had priority groups but that they would not turn anyone away. But that was when they were only doing healthcare workers. Actually i think that only lasted the first day. Then so many people were trying to cut in line that they are now being very strict.

I had gone the day before to see where i qualified. They said only with the last group. They have very specific groups written down. And right now it is only parents of kids under 6 months, kids 6 months to 5, and late stage pregnant women. Nobody else qualifies. Parents of young kids can't go. And siblings can't go.

The weird thing though in today's paper the guy in charge wrote a big letter (full page in the paper) and it did have caregivers and close family members of people who could not get the shot (i.e., young babies). But i don't think that has made it on the main list yet.

I finally received my screener for A CHRISTMAS CAROL yesterday and must get that review live today.  There are pluses and minuses to the Blu-ray.

Speaking of change of addresses, Betsy and I are seriously on the hunt for a new house again.  I simply can't stand being next to this new mini-development of McMansions.  Having the road right next to our house (as short as it is, and despite the fact it "serves" only two houses) has completely changed the quiet tenor (and even bass) of this house.  I'm taking the kids (who have no school today) to a couple of places today with our realtor.  I must say prices in Portland have fallen so dramatically that it's really amazing.  Of course the flip side we can't get very much for this house when we go to sell it.

I want to say to all and one and everyone in between, last night's "Supernatural" was a tour-de-force of creativity, imagination and excellent writing.   This show has been wonderful from the start but it began picking up steam two seasons ago.  After last season, I figured this season would be a denouement.

It isn't.  It's gone on to greater heights, in my opinion.

And this show is not the kind of show that would find a home on the "major" networks at all.  But it has become the keystone of the CW.

SPOILER

jkldjkljk;ajklasd;lfkj lkj;lakflkjasdflkj afd  I really loved "Supernatural's" hilarious takeoff on "Grey's Anatomy".   "Dr. Sexy MD" was a very nice parody.  And I was particularly amused by Dean's encounter with Dr. Sexy...that awestruck fan with a man-crush and "...awww, gee..." countenance.  Where they really nailed a show was the takeoff on "CSI: Miami" with both Dean and Sam doing takes on David Caruso and his "patented" brand of TV screen acting.   The Japanese game show was a hoot.  You just  never know what to expect from this show...except a GREAT deal of pleasure. jkdkjlflkj al;kjadflkj a;lkj ;lksj

Last night I watched an interesting little film on TCM called FOURTEEN HOURS, about a man who is threatening to jump from the 16th floor ledge of a hotel.  Aside from being the big screen debut of Miss Grace Kelly and being stock-full of soon-to-be-stars in bit roles, the movie stands on its own and still holds up.

Strangely, I could imagine this film being musicalized for the stage.

You know, I loved this movie when I was a little kid and saw it on Dialing For Dollars one weekday afternoon. Saw it again a few years ago and thought it was waaaay overacted (and that is saying a lot, considering the films that I usually like).

Great cast, though.

Today's Gold Box "Deal of the Day" at Amazon.com is the complete TV series of "Ally McBeal."

This one was a long time coming because they had to get music rights to all the popular songs used during the show's run.

The show is completely intact and no music was left out or covered up.

The $78.99 price is a STEAL as this set's MFRP is $199.99.   It's $23 less than I paid when the box was issued, but I don't feel remorse because the series remains fantastic.

Hmmm...This is tempting...  I've already put the Season One set on my "Git" list for Christmas, but I doubt that anyone has gotten it for me yet.  Only other thing is that I did not like the final season.  But I'm guessing that the probabilities are slim that all of the seasons will be released in individual sets.

Ugh--I hate making decisions under pressure...

I got back from the McGlinnvntory with no voice -I'msure the cold is aggravated by all of the dust and crap in those boxes - abd I have cancelled physical therapy. As soon as the laundry is finished, and the floors are vacuumed, i am going to bed and staying there as long as possible.

Do you think you might want to come over on Sunday for your CDs? We are free and if you're feeling up to it we would love to visit with you. I don't think you've seen Anthony since he came back from Wisconsin in May.

That might be fun!

Good! We can talk or e-mail on Saturday and make final plans.

I plan to spend most of tomorrow in bed, if I can.

In the meantime - and this is a SERIOUS question on which I need your help, you TV experts:

Let's say of young actors working in TV today you had to choose one to play Adriana Hofstetter - who would you choose.  I realize that several of you haven't read the books, but you can certainly read the synopsis of each at the Kritzerland site (under "Fun") and see the type of fifteen-year-old girl we're talking about.  I need someone who has some sort of name value but that someone doesn't necessarily have to be a big star - folks like Dakota Fanning won't do TV, so give me people who are on series or cable or whatever.  I just don't watch shows.  I look forward to your suggestions.

I bought this on DVD because I've always liked the film and think it's quite involving.

I've gone Apple!

Well, I've gone Apple keyboard at least. I have been very dissatisfied with the keyboards I've been using since I got my new computer in August. I didn't like the touch or feel of any that I had. I tried one of the Apple Mac keyboards at Best Buy and was  delighted with the touch. Of course, they want $70-80 for them new. So, I found a slightly used one on E-bay for $20, and it arrived today. I can tell I'm just going to love typing on this.

Then I watched my work project for the day - ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS. The best of the three movies (but still far, far away from the Pixar great ones in impact and animation). Because this was animated with 3-D in mind, there were a lot of poke things out at the audience moments which, because the DVD was 2-D, became irritating after awhile.

Still, it was a fun romp. They added a weasel character played by Simon Pegg who stole the movie in the same way that Antonia Bandaras' Puss 'n Boots stole SHREK 2 from the rest of the cast. If they do a fourth one, I'd be shocked if they didn't bring him back even though in the movie he left the "tribe" to go back home.

I'm really enjoying my first experience with my Apple keyboard. The touch is perfect for my typing style, and I just have to get my fingers used to the tight grouping of keys. I took a late lunch and went over to Lake Chalet.

The weatherman (on channel 2) said we might get a few sprinkles in Oakland but that the only measurable rainfall would be north of us.

It started pouring rain around 11 a.m. and hasn't really stopped.  And it's on the cool side.  I decided I wanted some hot soup and a sandwich or something.

I was seated at a very nice table with a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding environs.  What struck me was how much fog we still have this time of day.

My lunch choice was a bowl of split pea soup cooked with hamhocks for starter, and a vegetable pot pie for entree.  The latter was comprised mostly of cubed (small pieces) yellow squash, zucchini, a little cauliflower, wild baby mushrooms and Yukon Gold potatoes.  The broth was a Yukon Gold gravy.   It was topped with a tent of phyllo-style pastry toasted golden brown.

YUMMY.

NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA is on TCM tonight.  I have never seen this movie.  Do the learned people here on HHW recommend that I watch it?

I cannot speak for the learned folks, of course, but I found "Nicholas and Alexandra" worthy of my attention in both the theater and on laserdisc.  The theatrical version I saw was edited down from the initial roadshow offerings with several scenes cut, including one of Alexei rebuking Nicholas II for giving up his throne.  I found these scenes restored on the laser.  I have it on DVD, as well, but have not watched it.

It's a magnficiently produced epic with extraordinary attention to period detail.  David Lean's preferred art director, John Box, and favorite cinematographer, Freddie Young, contributed superb work for this non-Lean film.   The performance of Janet Suzman as Alexandra was justifiably nominated for the Best Actress Oscar.  One of her strongest scenes has her returning to the palace only to find that most of the household guard, and staff, have deserted their posts.  She then finds her husband in a room, sobbing.  Suzman's performance peaks in theses moments as she makes a very unsympathetic, cold character seem human and vulnerable. The whole story, of course, is a downer, and there's no amount of zip or sparkle that could be added except to make all the pageantry as dazzling as possible (and that's what they accomplished).  Michael Jayston is very good as Nicholas II, and Tom Baker is impressive as Rasputin.  Capping all the splendors of Imperial Russia captured on the screen is Richard Rodney Bennett's amazing score.  This is not his "usual" score, either, but it has a deep, aching melancholy about it that sits very well with me when I'm in the mood for it.

There are many affecting scenes in the film, including one that always moves me...when one of the red guards strikes Nicholas II, one of his aides has a great moment.

This film was Franklin J. Schaffner's next film after "Patton".

FWIW, here is part of what Roger Ebert wrote in his review:

If the movie isn't exactly stirring, however, it is undeniably interesting, especially after the intermission. There's a tendency to get confused early on, when grand dukes and dowager empresses and Rasputin and everybody crowd the screen. But at the end there is only an ordinary middle-aged man and his family, all very much bewildered and frightened, kidding themselves that they're not going to die. Two of the film's most intelligent performances come in here: those of a colonel assigned to guard the family and an old man picked by the revolution as their chief executioner.

All the performances are nicely keyed to an ensemble acting style that avoids the poses and flourishes of most epics. Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman, two experienced British actors who are movie unknowns, inhabit the title roles very naturally. And if it weren't for the way the Bolshevik revolution keeps interrupting things (like news bulletins), their story might have made a nice, muted domestic tragedy.

Watching the NHK Trophy skating short programs on Universal Sports Channel.

Johnny Weir did a good program....but it was pretty much of a nothing style wise except for the diva moves he thinks are so attractive....he did score well....so we shall see.  Andrew Rippon fell on a triple....Jeremy Abbott is yet to skate.....this was taped earlier today, I guess.  I don't see the finals listed tomorrow on ESPN or ABC.....so maybe they will be broadcast on a network on Sunday.

Do men's jumps have to be done in a certain direction by the rules?  It seems as though Weir was making his jumps clockwise and Rippon was jumping counterclockwise.

I think it depends upon the jump...some go clockwise and others counter-clockwise, just as some are off a specific foot or are launched going backwards.

I've always assumed that the jumps in skating are like the jumps in ballet and other types of dancing.  Like how each person is either right or left handed, they jump either clock-wise or counterclock-wise.  It's all personal preference...I assume. :)

Have you thought about renting your soon-to-be-old house?  My sister did this...twice!  The first time was when she had a house built and I rented the one that she had lived in for more than 15 years.  The second time (just a few months ago), she used a rental management company that handles everything and there was no trouble getting a renter.  In fact, the rental management company said that they had a list of about 40 people that would've wanted to rent the kind of house that my sister has...in her price range!

Did you catch my post awhile back regarding just this?  I mentioned I could see the young actress,Lea Michele, on GLEE playing Adriana.

But could she really play 15?? I'm not exactly sure how old the characters on GLEE are supposed to be (17?). I like Lea Michele but she is 23, and i don't know that she could play 15.

I couldn't remember how old she is on the show, just that she is in high school.  Plus I had the thought before Bruce asked ;)

As for age.  When I was 32 & we moved to Massachusetts I stood outside with the boys while the moving truck unloaded.  I watched as neighbor after neighbor drove by without stopping. :(  Later, as one by one they met me, they all apologized for not stopping to meet the baby sitter. :)

I concur wholeheartedly!   Gentle, yet pointed, ribbing at its competitors, which worked very well in the SUPERNATURAL world.  Great to see "The Trickster" back with an agenda, too.  And then there's Castiel. . . .mmm, mmm, good.
Last week's episode was nothing to sneeze at either, with a great performance from guest star Chad Everett.
I may just have to pick up the blu-ray discs of this show and trade off the standard discs. . .

Emma Roberts is 18 now.

I don't know if she's be right for the part but i am very fond of the girl who plays Ariel on Medium (sofia vassileva). She is around 17.

I also love Taylor Momsen who plays Jenny on Gossip Girl (she is 16).

There was a really spunky girl named Ashley Rickards on One tree hill last year (she played samantha and is around 16-17).

I haven't read it.  The last time you mentioned a book the store was pushing I ended up buying the book.  On Tuesday my book group is meeting here to discuss the book, HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER & SWEET.  Tonight I'll begin reading it again.  I hope I like it just as much, or more, the second time around.

Finished watching the Mercer documentary.  It's a shame that edisaurus was shoved out, because it's very clear that the director is an idiot.  The narration is not good, and Bill Charlap was a bad choice to read it (and then having him list his credits during the credit roll!).  The Clint stuff is embarrassing - he comes off as a doddering twit with John Williams.  His daughter, while very cute and I'm sure a very nice person, had no business opening her mouth on this program - her daddy ought to be ashamed.  And I thought that about several of the performers.  The show made little structural sense, which, for me, is key in everything.  However, wonderful songs and clips, even if Li'l Abner was given short shrift.  With some of the no-talent in the show it's a shame they couldn't at least have gotten Guy Haines to sing one of his Abner songs.

Edisaurus did manage to get me and all of you (HHW) in the end credits, which was very sweet.  A missed opportunity, this show.

A propos the Mercer documentary. . .It didn't even dawn on me until long after the show was over why Julie Andrews was being interviewed.  Of course, when I put in the LaMott disc, that big light bulb went off over my head as "Whistling Away The Dark" began to play. . .

DR Jane- HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER & SWEET was a wonderful read!  Even Mum read that and enjoyed it!
We were pushing THE BIG BURN last month, which I sold more copies of than anyone else, probably because I actually had read it and enjoyed it.  Plus it was a good tie-in to THE NATIONAL PARKS mini series.
From what I've been told, if you're a fan of Matthew Pearl (THE DANTE CLUB, THE POE SHADOW, THE LAST DICKENS), which I am, then THE GIVEN DAY is an excellent choice of reading material.  As I've said, I run hot and cold on Dennis Lehane, but, I'm going to give this one a fair trail.

DR Cilla, I'm very, very sorry to hear about your friend's cousin.  I hope information will become available that might help others understand which symptoms are a warning to seek medical care in time.

When I was at the Halloween party last Saturday, they said she had flu symptoms and that her temperature spiked and hit 105.5.  At that time she was at the hospital and they had her wrapped in ice to try to get the fever down.  I hadn't heard any more until yesterday and I got the news from Paul. He didn't knwo any more details.

Well, I've gone Apple keyboard at least.

I'm certain that due to BK's and Jose's influence, you'll complete your journey to being full-fledged Apple in no time.

Ain't gonna happen.

Ever.

Why?  I once said "ever" and here I am, eating my words as well as having just eaten some pasta papa.

For internet surfing and word processing, my PC serves me admirably. I can do everything with my computer that I want to do with ease and swiftness. I see no reason to switch.

I've always assumed that the jumps in skating are like the jumps in ballet and other types of dancing.  Like how each person is either right or left handed, they jump either clock-wise or counterclock-wise.  It's all personal preference...I assume. :)

Exactly right. The direction in which a person spins or jumps is completely of his own choosing. And there have been skaters who jumped in one direction and did their on-ice spins in another direction.

I did enjoy MEDIUM very much tonight. I pretty much suspected the the guilty party after the explosion.

And once again, Duvalos doubted Allison's story from the get-go. This makes me madder than anything else in the show. After all these years, they should jump the SECOND she has information to offer.

Nice seeing Faith Prince in a guest star role.

How about Sofia (oldest daughter Ariel) for Adriana?

Good Evening!

So... I went to the final dress rehearsal of Don Giovanni earlier this afternoon...

The short version:

-The just-renovated New York State Theater - now known as the David H. Koch Theater - truly does sound a lot better.  All the "fuzzy" stuff has been taken off the floors and walls, and that has really cleaned and clear-ed up the sounds in the house. The orchestra and singers will still have to get used to their new space, but, to my ears, it sounded like they were off to a good start.  -Alas, the fresh coat of paint is still fresh - well, at least still smells fresh.

-It was a very well cast and well sung Don Giovanni.  Well, their Don Ottavio already sounds a bit past his prime - and he did used to sound quite lovely - but the rest of the cast, especially the women were quite appealing to my ears.  -And the main trio of baritones/basses were also quite pleasing to the eye too.  -Especially when the Don and his servant Leporello spend most of the top of the second act in black, square-cut boxers.

-As for the direction and the director's concept, well... It will be interesting to read the reviews for this one next week.

Here is a picture of Daniel Okulitch who played Don Giovanni:

*If his names rings a slight bell, he also appeared in the operatic version of "The Fly" - and, apparently, he bared all during that production.

And here is Kelly Markgraf who portrayed Masetto:

He doesn't get to show his pecs and abs off, but his biceps and triceps get a lot of stage time.

As for a 15-year old-ish actress to play Adriana Hofstetter, well.... Hmmm...

-I'd also have to say that Lea Michele would read a bit too old, and would probably come off a bit too worldly and sophisticated, a little too "in with the "in" crowd".

-Abigail Breslin was the first name that came to my mind too.

-Have you checked with any of the soap opera casting directors?
