Title: THE BIG TO-DO
Post by: bk on November 08, 2009, 12:06:40 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a big to-do about a big to-do, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently making a big to-do about a big to-MOO.

Well, last night I went to see a local production of "The Turn of the Screw," that only has two actors (actually if you want to get technical, it has one actor and one actress).  Anyway, it was wonderful.  There was no set, except for a short set of stairs and a black box to sit upon...and that was it.  There were about 15 or so people in the audience, but everyone enjoyed it thoroughly.  It was spooky, had a bit of humor and quite intense, especially at the end.  I may go back next weekend!

Also, I haven't watched it yet, but my sister's boyfriend was able to record the Johnny Mercer documentary for me, and he gave me the DVD today.  I went to my parents' house for dinner before the show and he came with my sister and niece.  Even though I haven't watched it, I wanted to see the HHW reference in the credits...and here they are:

and notice the first credit on this screen capture and then look right in the middle:

That's cool, George! I totally missed that during the airing. I'm glad Crabapple made it, too. They were the other thanks I submitted. They gave me about 50 discs of radio shows at a reduced rate because they love Johnny. Of course, not one second of these marvelous shows was left in the doc, but I certainly had a wonderful time listening to them.

The good that I've taken away from this film is a deep appreciation of J.M.'s talent, getting to see a lot of amazing, rare films (I especially loved KING OF JAZZ and the old "soundies") discovering artists I wasn't that familiar with (Jack Teagarden, Paramount's stable of actors, etc.) and best of all, Brandon. He was recommended to me by the original producer. He was out of a job and working as a doorman at a club and asked her if he could be a P.A. I figured I could use him as an assistant since he'd done some editing. He turned out to be a fantastic editor so I started giving him some of the new performances to cut and he did a great job. So I gave him self-contained stores to cut, like the Capitol records sequence, which was my link to WWII. (Margaret Whiting told a great story about how they were able to start the company even though there was a shortage of shellac during the war.) Johnny was at the height of his popularity during WWII due to his great Armed Forces radio broadcasts and his own shows.

But WWII wasn't even addressed. There was no linear storytelling, it was random bites and chronology all over the place, kind of like someone had taken what we'd cut and put it in a blender, thrown it against a wall and you see a few chunks of recognizable stuff.

I promoted Brandon to associate editor after seeing what he could do, and finagled him a pay raise. But after I left, I was so grateful to Brandon for hanging in there. (He would have jump ship if he'd had somewhere to jump!) Even though he had to execute the "creative decisions" from on high, he did his best to make it the best he could. And even though he had never shepherded a beast like this through online, he was able to accomplish it without too much coaching from me. I insisted on sharing my editor's card with him out of gratitude, and I am going to be bringing him on to my current project until I'm done with THE CLOSER. He's the first editor I've known that made me feel comfortable doing that!

Looking at the credits, I do think it's interesting, and obviously, a directorial decision, to place people below in "Atlanta Post-Production",  as though there had been any going on anywhere else. He also tried to pigeonhole the original director into "Atlanta and Savannah crew", even though she and Greg and the cameraman had shot interviews in NY (Margaret Whiting, Joe Harris) and LA (A. Bergman solo, G. Mancini, Johnny's daughter, Ray Evans) but nothing in Atlanta! He never passed up an opportunity to denigrate the south but I can say that this piece got way more loving care than it would have gotten anywhere else, due to a fine sound mixer and an absolutely fanatically detailed-oriented on-line editor who wouldn't settle for anything until it was as perfect as he could make it, despite also taking care of a wife going through breast cancer treatment. In lesser hands it would be unwatchable...now it's just, to me, unsatisfying.

Good morning, all! I still have no voice, but I think staying in a day was a good decision, and I shall do the same today.  I have some edits on Mr Kern's score for OH, BOY!, as well as some GENTLEMEN BE SEATED edits for Mr Moross. I think what I shall do is work this mprning into the early afternoon and then spend the rest of the day watching television and drinking ginger tea with honey, all very sedate but, I'm sure, good for me.

re: camryn grimes.

I loved loved her when she was a child actress. She was the most brilliant kid actress (she started on Y&R when she was maybe 6).

I'm not sure how good she is now that she's older.  It was sort of an odd transition on the soap when she became older. Because everyone remembered her as a kid.

I'll bet she's still good. She really was a gem as a child.

I never thought that this would happen, but I seem to have lost my passion for watching movies.

The "thrill" is gone.

Maybe it's because there are really no "great" movies out there any longer.  Just movies that are better than the others. Indeed, reading over a list of films that are coming out between now and the end of the year, there is not one movie that I really WANT to see.

As I've said here before, the last "great" movie to come out of Hollywood was L.A. CONFIDENTIAL.

Makes me sad.

And my heavy work schedule continues today with SAY ANYTHING: 20th Anniverary Edition. I don't think I've ever seen this movie before. I had begun writing movie reviews again by 1989 when this came out (took a 16 month break between newspaper syndicates), but my new job only required me to do four movies a month (my choice), and I honestly can't remember if I chose this one or not. The reviews I wrote back then were written on an Apple IIc, and since I don't have it hooked up any longer, all the saved reviews on those old floppy discs are inaccessible to me.

At any rate, the Blu-ray has quite a few bonus features on it, so it looks like it'll take me the afternoon and early evening to finish it. I should still have some time to myself before DEXTER comes on tonight, but I won't know how much until later today.

DR elmore - I can't remember if I've mentioned this already, but... ...As well as Liane Hansen's 20th Anniversary of hosting NPR's "Weekend Edition" (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10).  Throughout out this morning's program, they had some other "What happened 20 years ago" stories, as well as some "What's happened since..." stories.  Quite the trip down memory lane.

Yes, I loved WINGS OF DESIRE, too. I thought it was pretty cheeky of them to interview the director of the Americanized remake CITY OF ANGELS on the documentary for WINGS OF DESIRE.

Agreed. WINGS OF DESIRE is one of my favorite films; I saw it 3 times when it ran in theatres because I kept taking more people to it. CITY OF ANGELS has none of the mystique and beauty of the original.

In answer to DR Jose, the crew only had to suffer listening to insane lines of questioning that had nothing to do with the subject of the film, but I'm sure they were treated well. The problem with he shoots was that they became a big photo op where he could invite everyone he wanted to impress, had their photos taken with C.E., tons of people milling around a studio and wandering thru the backgrounds of all the shots. This distracted the crew from doing their job, consequently there were a lot of problems with the timecodes and synch issues. The director was not paying attention and asked Jamie if he had played a certain part of OLD BLACK MAGIC. When he said he'd already played it, the director's response was "uh...well...play it again!"
This shoot went way over time and budget.

The shoot they threw together with T. Bennett and Brubeck was shot so badly that Bennett wouldn't give his permission for it to be used. Part of that was residual dissatisfaction about the way the Bennett doc by the same director turned out. That one is probably better because he wouldn't have the nerve to bully C.E.'s editors to get his way.

That said, I found something likeable about the director---he gave us a lot of good stories and catch phrases. And his cologne is indelibly imprinted on my passenger's side seatbelt, even months later!

We're not sure if it's Swine Flu, but DS Zach is very sick.  His fever spiked up over 101 just within a few hours yesterday.  Thankfully it's back down around 100 now, but, boy, does he look bad and he has a really bad cough.  Does swine flu produce a croupy cough?
Yes.  a cough is one of the main symptoms

Found this online.  It looks the same as what I've read other places and heard from family and others with the flu They are calling it Swine Flu Influenza Virus in this article, but it's H1N1
Quote
Signs and Symptoms
Following are the signs and symptoms most commonly associated with SIV:

◦Symptoms are similar to those of regular human flu and include fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, disorientation, chills and fatigue
Some people have also reported:

◦Stiffness of the joints, diarrhea and vomiting
In children emergency warning signs requiring urgent medical attention include:

◦Fast breathing or trouble breathing
◦Bluish skin color
◦Lack of thirst resulting in not drinking enough fluids
◦Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
◦Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and a worse cough
◦Fever with a rash
In adults, emergency warning signs requiring urgent medical attention include:
◦Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
◦Sudden dizziness or confusion
◦Severe or persistent vomiting
How does SIV spread?
◦Spread of SIV happens mainly from person- to-person in the same way that seasonal flu spreads, i.e., through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
◦Infected people may be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to seven or more days after becoming sick.
Naturopathic Preventive Strategies
The following strategies are beneficial in the prevention of diseases such as SIV:

Hygiene
◦Cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the trash after using it.
◦Cough or sneeze into sleeve or jacket of bent arm rather than into closed fist or open hand.
◦Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after a cough or sneeze.
◦Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth.
Avoid close contact with sick people
◦Influenza is thought to spread mainly person- to-person through coughing or sneezing by infected people.
◦If sick stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Lifestyle
◦Ensure adequate rest
◦Wash hands with soap frequently during the day
◦Do deep breathing exercises
◦Walk and do stretching exercises to boost the immune system (Note: Extreme aerobic exercises and weight training are best minimized if you have any of the above symptoms)
◦Dry skin brushing and contrast showers are useful to support optimal lymphatic system function
◦Remember that 'emotional' stress, fear and worry can depress the immune system
◦Allow a mild to moderate fever. A fever of 1-3 degrees above normal core body temperature (37.5 degrees Celsius) has a profound effect on immune modulation and optimizes the healing response
If you or someone you know is experiencing a new/worse cough, shortness of breath, are feeling feverish, and/or have had shakes or chills in the last 24 hours, and have travelled within the last seven days to an infected area, or have been in contact with a sick person, contact a naturopathic doctor or other health care professional immediately.

I'm not sure if it is a croupy cough or not.  I keep hearing it is a bad cough.  At least his fever isn't high.  Can he still breath ok?  I've had croup & it is very scary.  Craig had croup when he was a baby & difficulty breathing.  The doctor had us take him out into the night air.  It worked & he could breathe more easily.  I should have done that for myself, would have if I had not been home alone with the little ones.

We had them in the building last year during the Big Bedbug Battle; a neighbor on the second floor was so bothered by both the mites and bedbugs that her parents forced her to move out of the apartment into another space. I think they're coming from the pigeons on the fire escapes; advise your friend to invest in some allergin screens for all open windows, and to do several bug bombs over a couple of weeks. Also, wash all bedding and scrub everything with ammonia.

I also regulary wash my allergin screens and filters in an ammonia solution.

DR TCB might think of Lotta Faust, who starred in the 1905 tour of THE WIZARD OF OZ as Tryxie Tryfle the waitress. She and the chorus girls sang the big hit "Sammy" to a gentleman seated in one of the stage boxes.  Poor Lotta died in 1910 at the age of 30. Probably a bad abortion.

Victor Herbert played for her funeral and he and his BABES IN TOYLAND collaborator Glen MacDonough were two of the pallbearers.

Then I watched SAY ANYTHING. What a delightfully different teen slice of life movie! I think I had seen it but on cable rather than reviewing it in a theater. John Mahoney was just superb. How did he not get an Oscar nomination for ths?

The script deserved some recognition, too, because it was so fresh and unusual for a teen movie. Not the usual junk about having all the booze, drugs, and sex one could consume in the summer after high school graduation but something a lot more involving and identifiable.

I got all the bonuses done, too. The commentary is ported over from the DVD releaseof some years ago, but there are some new featurettes including Cameron Crowe looking back on his first directorial experience in a separate interview, and the three primary cast members also looking back on the experience of making the movie twenty years ago (my, how they've all changed! I guess many of us have in twenty years!)

The one bonus I didn't like at all was a bunch of minor celebrities (including Thomas Lennon and Ben Garnet from RENO 911!) exclaiming their love for the movie quoting dialogue and metioning iconic moments that have stayed with them. Seemed kind of un-cool to me. (They did that on the CLOVERFIELD Blu-ray, and I didn't like it there either.)

Sunday afternoon greetings!  I drove most of the way home from Lima this afternoon and we were stopped on I-75 just south of Dayton for an accident in which a pick-up truck with a U-haul trailer attached had flipped over on its side (but the trailer did not).  It snarled traffic for a while, then those of us in the left lane were directed to go around by driving down into the grassy median.  Fortunately we haven't had rain for about a week, so it wasn't muddy.  The highway was quite a mess and I hope everybody's OK - there weren't even any police or emergency vehicles on the scene yet.

I finished my evening viewing with Friday night's WHITE COLLAR. I did enjoy this episode much more than last week's. Had some decent mystery and surprise to it, and a lovely dog subplot for DR Jane.

Are you referring to Book of Hours?  What dog subplot? ;D  Honest, I don't remember one.

A homeless man has a dog who's starting to die (refusing to eat, etc.), and he wants the healing Bible so it will heal the dog.

LOL-Boy and we only watched it last night. :-[

I watched the first LAW & ORDER on Friday night. It was an involving episode with more gang/drug/intimidation stuff for the legal team to deal with and a smarmy lawyer played by Jonathan Cake representing the drug cartel. I liked it.

Did Mr Cake keep his clothes on?

Thanks for the vibes.  Zach's fever seems to have broken, at least temporarily, and he sure looks better now than he did even this morning.  I know that flu has coughs--what I was wondering was does the swine flu have a *croupy* cough.  Typically when I get the flu I don't get that deep raspy croupy cough, just run of the mill sneezing or coughing.

Glad Zack is doing better & big time vibes he stays that way.  I did a little googling & found a couple of comments from parents saying their children had H1N1 & what sounded just like coup, which the were very familiar with.  I personally would make sure I could hear him during the night, or at least let him know to wake you if he is having trouble breathing.

DR Jennifer - ~~~~~GET WELL VIBES TO YOUR NIECE~~~~~

Has your sister checked in with her doctor regarding your niece's/her daughter's reaction to the flu shot?

When they got the flu shot they were told it is common to have a fever afterwards.

My niece's doctor is not open on the weekends. I think my sis was going to call the swine flu hotline. But my niece is starting to do better today. She is mostly back to her old self. Her fever today was between 99-100F all day. That is a pretty low fever. My sis did not want to give her the meds cause she seemed better.  Although she's had diarrhea all day.

re: camryn grimes.

I've always thought the "Y&R" writers did not - and do not - know how to write for actresses and characters in their "tweens".  -Which is why most of the kids on that show - and other soaps - go away to boarding school at age 8, and then come back two years later in their late teens.

They have had some good writing when the "kids" were 16 ish. But i agree they have not done much with tweens. There was this little girl who played abby a couple years ago. I thought she was brilliant (i have seen her guest star on many shows). But they decided to SORAs her (so now she is 14). Although the actress who plays her now is just so-so.

Favor - can some of you dear readers go to YouTube and rate the various haineshisway videos - some ASS has gone in there on every video that had no star rating and given them one star - I'm sure it's one of our amusing little enemies who has nothing better to do - it's so bloody obvious - but all it will take is a couple of five-star ratings to put it right.

Last night I watched the Johnny Mercer doc and while it it was talking-headish and the C.E. footage was useless and there was no point of view and it jumped from place to place, I still enjoyed it.  I found it very interesting that Mercer was more than an oddity in being a songsmith who performed his own tunes and that he was a talented interpreter of his material. I also e joyed seeing the television clips from the 50s and 60s--very magical even if they were way too short.

No, it wasn't a perfect stew, but there are a lot of tasty bits in there.

I've been watching two different productions of SWAN LAKE tonight: Nureyev's for the Paris opera Ballet and the Teatro La Scala production with Roberto Bolle, who reminds me at times of Brent Barrett. Both are peculiar and veer away from other productions: the Nureyev televised in 2004, long after Nureyev's death, was built by him as a star vehicle for himself, and I thought the Prince of 2004 had neither the looks nor the ego to pull it off. It's rather a gay slant, not as homoerotic as Matthew Bourne's, but there is this strange hangup on betrayal, with the character of the Prince's best friend doubling as the wicked sorceror who transforms straying princesses into swans. The LaScala production uses a revision of the ballet from the 1950s by a Russian choreographer named Bourmeister which goes back to the original Tchaikovsky score before it was revised and messed around with by choreographers after Tchaikovsky's death. I'm still in it, but I think it has a happy ending and in an unfortunate turn of events, Bourmeister turns the Prince's best friend into a campy little prancing court jester who gets way too much time in my book.

I still like the London Festival Ballet production choreographed by Makarova the best.

I liked a lot of the LaScala production. Svetlana Zakharova is amazing in the double role of Odette (Swan Queen)/Odile (Black Swan). Her black swan, daughter of the evil sorceror, is one mean bitch; makes you wonder why Prince Siegfried is so easily fooled by such a calculating, cold villainess. Bourmeister also improves the traditional Act Three by making all of the national dances pawns of the sorceror so they're kind of like smoke screens he throws out to heat up the Prince by having Odile teasing him and keeping away from him until the Big Moment. Act Four is good, with the best drowning I've seen for this ballet, until the Prince conquers the villain - I still don't know how, since this villan can turn girls to swans with no effort at all - and ithere's a happy ending. I lke it better when they both die and their sacrifice kills the sorceror.

There's a new DVD of the lastest Royal Ballet version that was just released. I've gotta catch that one now.

Thanks for those screen captures, DR George. I missed the Mercer documentary due to my heavy work schedule, and at least I got to see those important credits.

It will re-run several more times, if you feel so inclined...

I will keep an eye out for it because I do love Johnny Mercer's work and would find this interesting, I'm sure.

It'll be on again on November 18.

Done. :D

Someone has pointed out that the one-star ratings is a YouTube glitch that only occurs if I'm looking in "My Videos" - once you actually go to the video, most of them have five-star ratings.

Oh, well...you got some more 5-star ratings, anyway. :)

Unfortunately, yes.

Today, I'm going to see a play called "Ladies of the Alamo."  I've never hear of it, but a friend is in it, so I'm going to go.  And it starts in a hour!  Gotta get ready.

Have a good day, all!

I saw the original production when it tried out in Philly.  Estelle Parsons, Eileen Heckart and Rosemary Murphy.  A lot of bitchy fun with a bizzare turn.

It was pretty good...for a college production.  The actresses were pretty good and the show was funny.

Don't you hate it when that happens??

MATTH _ I keep meaningto ask you -  where can I read your reviews?

hometheaterforum.com

Once there, go into the search line and type (without quotation marks) "HTF REVIEW + Matt Hough"

and that should bring up pages of notations. There should be over five hundred reviews there so happy searching. If you have a specific movie in mind like, say, WINGS OF DESIRE that we were talking about today, you can just type in the name of the movie and the search engine will pull up all threads on that topic and you will see my review threads among those.

Thanks for asking!

I debated with myself for a long time over what to watch on the DVR and if I wanted to simply pull a favorite movie like MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS off the shelf.

I decided to watch AUSTRALIA since it's taking up a three hour high def block on my DVR. My cache went from 78% full to 61% once I had watched it and deleted it.

Anyway, this is a movie that does NOT lack for plot. Good lord, was this a sprawling tale or what! Reminded me some of RED RIVER and some of OUT OF AFRICA and bits and pieces of lots of other movies, too. The production was BIG (wonder what this thing cost?), but I think maybe some things could have been cut to make it a little more streamline and run a bit more smoothly. I did find Kidman and Jackman together made for an interesting couple. I also thought the movie's villain Fletcher was quite a hunk himself. I wanted him to take HIS shirt off as much as Jackman got to toss his off on occasion.

DEXTER tonight had a first, an OOPS! moment that should have some ramifications for the remaining episodes of the season. I'll be interested to see where it all leads. Good show!

Also, I haven't watched it yet, but my sister's boyfriend was able to record the Johnny Mercer documentary for me, and he gave me the DVD today.  I went to my parents' house for dinner before the show and he came with my sister and niece.  Even though I haven't watched it, I wanted to see the HHW reference in the credits...and here they are:

and notice the first credit on this screen capture and then look right in the middle:

thank you George!!  Do you, by chance, have any way of duplicating said DVD and if you do,  would you consider doing so for the likes of me?

I do...and can! :D

DR elmore - I can't remember if I've mentioned this already, but... It turns out that my youngest brother, Jay, is a friend and former co-worker of Alina Faye's husband.  Jay had been telling me that his friend's wife had landed a featured role in a Broadway show, but he could never remember the name of the show... Well... Of course, since Alina was out the night I saw Finian's Rainbow, I guess I'm going to have to see the show again. ;)

If you decide to go in December, maybe I'll be able to join you!

Mad Men closed out season three with a really crackerjack episode - I won't say anymore, other than it was very satisfying without being one of those annoying cliffhanger things.

Snow White missing five dwarfsBy Lynn Zerschling lzerschling@siouxcityjounral.com | Posted: Sunday, November 8, 2009 8:45 pm

A woman living in Morningside told police Sunday morning someone once again has dwarf-napped five of Snow White's seven dwarfs from her front yard.

She said each of the cement pieces weighed 50 pounds each. The set had been displayed in her front year and along her drvieway on Morningside Avenue.

Snow White was not stolen, perhaps because she weighed more than 100 pounds.

The resident told police this marks the third time some of her lawn ornaments have been taken. In August, thieves took Doopey and Sneezy.

Good Evening!

It was a truly gorgeous, picture-perfect Fall day here in NYC.  Yes, it was "unseasonably warm", but... :)  Lots of walking, some picture taking, and more walking.
