Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wacko and musical, and now it is time for you to post until the wacko cows come home.  They're currently listening to the MOOsic of the night.

Topic of the Day:

Growing up, my parents had a bunch of classical records...mostly the "greatest hits"-type records where they just played a few minutes of the well-known tunes.  I don't think that they had recordings of complete pieces, though.  And even though I don't think I ever saw a single episode, I did learn that the Lone Ranger theme was really the "William Tell" overture.  And the theme from "2001: A Space Opera" was a previously existing piece of classical music, too.  TV and movies are probably where I heard most classical music while growing up.  Merry Melodies, "What's Opera, Doc?," etc., things like that. :)

That's funny.  Apparently 1:30 a.m. is not the best time to find Haineses online.  We just docked in Sardinia and the day is beautiful.  The termperature is supposed to get into the mid-Seventies.

Ron, I wish you had told me yesterday about all Italian men having wives but still taking calls from strange men.  Davide would have been worth making a pass.

Oh well, there are other Davides in the sea.

Ciao, babies!

TOD: My father was a pharmacist and had a pharmacy in a small Ohio town. He was very generous in wanting to help people who couldn't afford it, and would sometimes get paid in food, or not paid at all, but he couldn't deprive someone of needed medication. Needless to say, his business didn't last very long and he had to sell off the inventory, which included goos for the home, and sell the store.

The one thing he kept was something we all coveted: one of those console stereos that looked like a nice piece of furniture. We had it for years. After we left Ohio and he got on his feet again by joining the public health service, it was a long time before we were able to afford records. But we did have three: Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue", Kabalevsky's "The Comedians" and a classical "greatest hits" compilation (probably the Longines Symphonette!).

It didn't lead me to other recordings because I was an infant (and had listened to Gershwin in utero) but the first time I got my hands on a toy piano I could already plunk out melodies and my parents bought a piano a few years later.

Other recordings I loved as a kid were Gllbert and Sullivan, Tchaikovsky, anything exciting and dramatic!

I find it fascinating that DRs George and Edisaurus would sit transfixed in front of the stereo listening to classical music as infants, because this was also my experience.  I can't tell you what the albums were, but I would stare at the LP covers and sit motionless, listening to the music for hours on end.

A. The Bugatti is an aria from the Messiah - as you should know.

B. The unnamed owner of the vehicle, traveling through Galveston, Texas to look at some high-end property, was reportedly talking on his cell phone when a low-flying pelican distracted him. The driver swerved to avoid the big bird, dropped his cell phone, and in the process the front passenger tire hit a mud patch.

The Woodpecker is funny. He lurks on White Oak while the squirrel is snacking on the corn kernel/peanut mix on the Pine. When the squirrel leaves, the woodpecker goes to the box, extracts a kernel of corn, climbs up a few feet, jabs the kernel into the tree bark and then pecks away at it.

sort-of TOD related:

One of my favorite Christmas recordings growing up was with The Roger Wagner Chorale.  And it closed with this rousing "arrangement" of Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah.

I remember eventually hearing the real thing, and crestfalledly realizing how "cheesy" the Roger Wagner arrangement had been.           :-\

Not saying that there isn't a place for all kinds of music in all kinds of arrangements.  I'm just saying that there is a reason that some works of art stand the test of time.         :)

I remember asking a lot of questions at the Juilliard Bookstore about this, and I was told that since they were an Academic Bookstore, they were able to sell the "Regular" product at the Academic Price.  I guess it's assumed that anyone who buys it a school bookstore will automatically qualify for the academic pricing.  Most of the time(?), the "proof" is only required if purchased online.  I think.  In any case, I did not have to provide any proof of my academic standing when I went to register my software.

I also remember how the Catholic University Bookstore would sell "Academic" versions, when, in fact, they were selling the "regular" version at the academic price.  Think of it as buying something for less than standard retail at CostCo.  I guess.  I think.

Sardinia on Rye

What an incredibly beautiful day.  The skies are blue, the temperatures are in the 70s, and sheep of Sardinia are scared.  I think there is a joke there, but I am not sure.

I guess the big news that came out of yesterday’s HIGHLIGHTS OF SARDINIA lecture was that one third of all sheep in Italy are in Sardinia.  I guess that is when a number of people decided that they were going to spend the day onboard the ship.

However, being the brave little sailor that I am, I decided to go into town for a little look-see.  And as it turned out, a little look-see is about all you can do in Olbia, Sardinia.  It is a lovely little town with small winding streets, some small but quite attractive local hotels, attractive little shops, and a whole slew of little outdoor cafes.  Unfortunately, this being November, and we being the last cruise ship of the season; most of the town remained closed for our visit.

I should have known when the shuttle bus from the ship dropped off all ten of us in the middle of the town square; and we were quickly replaced by 47 passengers heading back to the ship.  Still, the town was lovely, the locals were lovely, and it sure beat the hell out of hiking the ruins of Pompeii in this heat.

This afternoon is probably the first time that there have been plenty of bodies in and near the pool and the hot tubs.  There have been a few hardy souls each day, but today they are really soaking up the sun.  In fact, wandering around the deck chairs a few minutes ago; I kind of felt like I was back wandering among the ruins of Pompeii.  I could say something about the dogs of Insignia, but I will pass.

Seriously, the passengers onboard Insignia are not nearly as old as I had expected.  I have actually seen two ten year olds, who were not married to old men.

Tonight I am dining in one of the two specialty dining rooms.  This was in the Polo Grill.  The Polo Grill is famous for serving a 32 oz. Prime Rib.  Now what the Hell do you do with 32 ounces of beef?  You certainly can’t eat it all, and if you save it to give your dog when you get home it will be really old and not very good.  Sure, some of the cabins have small refrigerators, but they are so stocked with small bottles of booze, that I doubt you could fit 14 to 24 ounces of beef on the shelf.  Personally, I think I will opt for the fillet mignon, which is a more normal eight to twelve ounces.  I will have a full report later.

Well, I have had lunch, and it is too early for dinner, so I guess I will go take a nap in a deck chair in a few minutes

TOD:

I have no idea what the first classical music I ever heard would have been.  It's not that I was raised on it but it was played in the house as I grew up, either on TV or in the form of LPs.  I can recall a number of "Best of" sets that were either given out or sold for cheap from a super-market--Beethoven, Rachmaninoff and Mozart are the albums I clearly remember being in our record collection.

Good morning, all! I think perhaps I will walk down to the Juilliard Bookstore today and check out the Finale 2010 situation. I like browsing among the music and books so I have an additional excuse to go now.

I believe the battery on my carbon monoxide monitor was dying last night; it began chirping around 1 am and continued until I got out of bed, removed it from the wall and removed its battery. I jyst put a new battery in and it seems to be happy once again.

DR TCB! It's good to know you are well and it sounds as though you are having a good time. I am loking forward to the photos.

I learned to read around the age of three or four and the family parlor game was to have me pull records. In 1949 my favrite recording was Khatchaturian's Sabre Dance from the ballet Gayne, recorded by the Boston Pops. It's still one of my favorite pieces and I'm still fond of ballet music, particularly Tchaikovsky, Delibes, and Stravinsky. I'm also still fond of the excellent underrated conductor Arthur Fiedler and the wonderful Boston Pops whose silly recording of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" turned me on to the Beatles. This morning I am listening to Jorge Bolet play Lizst piano pieces; surely the "Mephisto Waltz" is the the source of Sondheim's vamp for "A Weekend in the Country"?

We signed the listing agreement last night on this house and have priced really aggressively, even for this market, so I am hoping we can sell.  Portland's real estate market is actually pretty good compared to the rest of the country and our realtor had charts showing median prices were rising and inventory was declining, actually pretty precipitously.

TOD:

The first piece of classical music that really stuck with me was Chopin's "Polonaise," which I first heard in the movie, A SONG TO REMEMBER w/Paul Muni, Merle Oberon and Cornel Wilde.

I hope I spelled it right.

You did spell it correctly, but I suspect the Polonaise in question is the one termed the "military" one since Chopin wrote many polonaises for piano. He also wrote one for cello and piano which my good friend Gary Holt, now at the Cologne conservatory in Germany, played for his graduate cello recital. My favorite non-Chopin versions of the Polish dance (also called polacca) include the one at the opening of Act Two of THE MERRY WIDOW, Tschaikovsky's Act Three "Entrance of the Guests" from THE SLEEPING BEAUTY, and Trude Rittman's opening to "When The Idle Poor Become The Idle Rich" in FINIAN'S RAINBOW. Speaking of my beloved Trude, she was a graduate of the Cologne Conservatory.

I'm sure I was exposed (not a euphemism) to all the "usual suspects" as a child--Peter and the Wolf, The Nutcracker, Bolero, etc.  And of course I had to make it through the classical piano repertoire at an early age.  But I can tell you the first transcendental listening experience I had with classical music, and it was when I was probably 16 or 17.  It was the Bruno Walter recording of Brahms 4.  Suddenly the universe made sense to me.  At least for a half hour or so.  :)

I expect my intro to classical music was through Disney with such things as Peter & The Wolf and Fantasia.  I know my parents had recordings of Grieg's Peer Gynt and Dovark's New World Symphony, as well as a 78 of Rhapsody in Blue.  I remember the first piece I ever sought out to buy was Vaughn Williams' Symphonia Anarctica, which was actually his score for the film, Scott of Anarctica.  I heard  it on the radio one night and went crazy for it.  We play the spooky thing every Halloween and always get comments from the parents of trick-or-treaters about it.

One of my favourite introductions to classical music was listening to Moon River every weekday night on my transistor radio.  It was a show that emanated out of Cincinnati and was poetry read to organ music, usually of a classical nature.

Not a classical music memory, but one of my earliest "listening" memories had to do with the first television I remember from my toddler years.  It was a gigantic blonde Sears Silvertone black and white console (on metal legs)--a big, square boxy thing with what was probably a 20 inch or so screen.  The top lifted up and there was a record player inside (not, of course, a stereo, and I don't even think it was officially a "hi-fi").  My parents had a stack of old 78s they kept in the living room and I remember to this day putting on the old Edward R. Murrow "You Can Hear it Now" 78s, only to discover the tonearm had no needle in it.  So I then discovered if I placed my fingernail ever so gingerly on the record, I could actually hear it!  I still remember the sensation of the sound vibrations on my finger and how funny it was to hear the radio broadcasts emanating from my fingernail.

DR Cillaliz i think tonight's DANCING WITH THE STARS elimination should be interesting.

IMO any one of the 4 could go. Mya is clearly the best. And I believe Derek is the most popular professional dancer. Donny Osmond and Kelly Osbourne are probably more popular than joanna and mya.

I felt so bad for donny (he had a horrible first dance and got caught in kym's dress hem).

I actually hope it is kelly who goes tonight, even though she did better than donny last night. I think overall he is stronger than she is.

I really loved that movie, DR DRUXY.  Channel Six used to show it late on Saturday night on their "Best of Hollywood" series....IN COLOR!!!  They also sometimes showed A SONG TO REMEMBER with Mr Dirk Bogarde pounding away at a dummy piano and missing many notes that nonetheless showed up on the soundtrack.  This was also IN COLOR!!!!

I think that the Dirk Bogarde movie is called SONG WITHOUT END, or am I mistaken?

And Elmore- Andrew Lloyd Weber(Sir?) In PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Stole a whole melody from Puccini's opera  LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST

Cool and rainy here today.

It only took me about half an hour to do what I needed to do - electronics wise.

My up convert DVD had its sound going into the television, and I wanted to send it through the sound system.  I had two VCR's hooked up from back when I would make Video copies of this and that - and neither VCR was run through the sound system.

So....NOW....my up convert is through the system, one VCR is gone (the oldest one), and the newest Toshiba VCR, still probably 9 years old, is working through the sound system and showing up on my TV screen.

Voila!

Ah, TCB.  I lived/worked  in Italy 9 1/2 years in my military career.  Had I known much earlier that you were going to be spending time there, I'd have prepared a briefing sheet "for your eyes only" on things to see and do, interesting Italian expressions, etc.   Did you by any chance see the house of the Vetti brothers in Pompeii?  There is a very (in)famous mural there of Priapus using his "asset" on a set of scales.  It clearly came out in his favor although the other side of the scale was heaped with gold or some other commodity of value.  LOL.

His "Serenade To Music" in it's original setting for 16 voices  and orchestra, which is far superior to the version without voices, is so beautiful. It was supposedly written for the 16 best singers in England at the time and their names, not their vocal type like soprano or tenor) are listed in the published score. The text is from THE MERCHANT OF VENICE,

Hello everyone-

I'm back from NYC.  I had a really great time!

I saw Finian's Rainbow Saturday and enjoyed it immensely!  Thy cast is first-rate!  I had never seen Kate Baldwin or Jim Norton before and thought they were just great!  I had seen Cheyenne Jackson in Xanadu and was happy to see (and hear ) him again.  Terri White has that show-stopping number, or course, and Christopher Fitzgerald is just perfect (and hilarious) as the leprechaun.    The songs are so good (and it's always better when you're familiar with some of them).   I especially liked "If This Isn't Love,"  "Old Devil Moon," and "..Glocca Morra."   The orchestra sounded great ---I guess DR elmore had something to do with that!   After the show I had my picture taken with Mr. Jackson.  If I knew how to post it I would.

When I was walking back to my seat after intermission I thought that the man in front of me looked familiar.  Sure enough, it was Joel Grey!  I thought of approaching him, but didn't want to bother him.

I'll definitely try and see the show again.

Gotta go --I have a doctor's appointment.

Kevin

I had a nice walk down to Juilliard. The good news is that they had the Finale 2010 for $350, which is excellent! Until the Amazon dealer releases my funds held back into my bank account, I cannot afford to make the investment. I told the clerk I would be back by Friday for it.

DR KevinH, I'm glad you enjoyed FINIAN'S RAINBOW. Perhaps DRGeorge or another poster with better terminology than I can help you post your photo. You should have said something to Mr Grey; I think he would have been flattered.

In one of the first shows of this "game" show with Regis years back, a contestant -- very goodlooking-and-knew-it and thought he was more intuitive and street smart than most other folks in the world -- was first to sit in the chair after a lightning round to select a contestant.  He was asked the following (approximate) question:

"Which animal did Hannibal use to cross the Alps?"

"A. Yaks"
"B. Elephants"
"C. Llamas"

His answer:  "C. Llamas".   I nearly wet myself I was laughing so hard.  He rather set the standard for stupid that the show occasionally lives down to.

(The look on his face when he was informed he gave a wrong answer was priceless)  He left with no money, IIRC.

I am supposed to be meeting DR FJL for dinner tonight.
I think I am going to need a drink first.  And during.
And probably an appointment with my hairdresser tomorrow as I shall probably be pulling all my hair out today.

So anyone who wants to see me bald - just stop on over tomorrow morning.

Hmmm... Should I head on over to DR FJL's place tonight too, then? ;)

-And I really hope your urges to pull out your hair dissipate once you are ensconced in the comfort of Chez Landau & Kennon & Toby & Dylan.

And just where is the bookstore now, DR elmore?  I just realized I haven't been there since the re-location and re-modeling.

Was the clerk able to tell you if any further proof of Academia would be needed once you purchased the software?

Actually, this is one of those rare times when we shall not be at Chez Skip and Fred.  Fred and I are meeting a visiting out of town friend at a restaurant for dinner.

LOL.

Damn, Ron, I am sorry I missed that mural!  I should have remembered that you were stationed in Italy for quite a while.  That was in Naples wasn't it?  Hey, maybe you know Davide?

Three southern belles on MILLIONAIRE - question....which playwright worked in the 1930's at a Missouri shoe company with a man named Stanley Kowalski.

They thought it must be Arthur Miller.....but their phone a friend at least knew it was Tennessee Williams.  Even then they used their double dip....at least they finally tried Williams.

What kind of TEST do they give these people?

It used to be quite an extensive test. My friend Hal auditioned for this and for JEOPARDY. He's one of the smartest, most well read people I know with a broad range of knowledge in all fields, and he didn't make it on either show.

Kevin

That is so funny. Years ago when my friends and I say Disney's AIDA, Joel Grey was in the audience that night, and I passed by him going to the lobby and just said, "Oh, I've enjoyed you in so many projects through the years," and he said, "Thank you very much." I didn't waylay him or try to stop him because I know celebrities going to a show don't usually want their evenings interrupted with fan gushings.

Then I watched REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT. I've had this TV version on videotape for years, but I was hoping it would be a bit cleaner and sharper on DVD. Alas, no such luck. It is what it is.

Great drama, of course, and marvelous performances. No wonder Palance won the Emmy. Ed Wynn got nominated, too, but what a joke that Keenan Wynn didn't get a nomination. He was better than his father (but, of course, this was Ed Wynn's first dramatic performance after years of being a clown, and I'm sure the nomination was to reward him for a valiant effort.)

I watched the introduction (17 minutes) for THE COMEDIAN and a 9-minute interview with John Frankenheimer (which is excerpted in the introduction, much to my disappointment. I hoped this was going to be all new material). There is a commentary that I suspect is Frankenheimer, but I won't listen to it until I have watched the show, another one I already have on videotape and hope the DVD version is better quality.

Has anybody beside me had problems with Amazon's "Free Shipping" during the past few months?

They used to ship strictly via USPS, and once the item left the warehouse I got it within 3 days.

Now, they're using a method called FedEx Smart Post, and it's taking an average of 10-14 days for the packages to get to me...and, on two occasions, they got lost because the FedEx scan had problems being recognized by the USPS scanner.

I thought i would try to go for a bike ride today, since i no longer have a

Unfortunately I think if i had tried i would have fallen off.  My whole body is tired and i can hardly walk.  Apparently this is the last phase of my cold. Thank goodness.

Oy and vey - what a day this has been, what a rare mood I'm in and not a good one.  Despite being told yesterday that we'd be approved within forty-eight hours, I got an e-mail this morning saying there were still major issues to be resolved.  I then had a half-hour phone conversation about them - a lot of information coming at me, much of it technical - but nothing to do with the liner notes or anything like that - I think we're fine there.  There are some additional credits to add, they wanted the names of the session musicians for both scores (it's an AFM requirement - but they've now come off it and we can put that on our website - I talked to the AFM and all is well on that front - whew!).  But they asked me to go back to using the original cue titles from the cue sheets - which they'd never sent me.  Now I have them, but I don't like the cue titles and we're trying to come to some agreement about using mine - it requires me to do a lot of paperwork so that they know which cue title on ours responds to which cue title on their cue sheet - not sure how it will all play out, but the worst case scenario is will use the originals - they're boring, but, you know, we'll do what we have to do.  They understand they're throwing all this at me very last minute and the guy I'm dealing with is really terrific.  I won't know the outcome until tomorrow.  There is a song from each film on this CD and we have to credit the lyricist of each even though we don't actually use a vocal version of either song.  Then they additionally may want us to asterisk each track where the song's tune appears - that's a lot of asterisks (I think they want it so it's easier to pay mechanicals) - they have that info on the cue sheets, so I'm hoping just adding the lyricists credit will suffice.  If not, you'll see a lot of *******s on the tracks.  They also asked for track timings - I don't like them and have not done them on our CDs, but I agreed to do them, since it's easy.  I then spent ninety minutes on the phone with my mastering guy trying to make sense of the cue sheets and we got it so that I could at least create a documentation of what comes from where on our CD - in one case it was pretty simple, but in the other some of the score was not used, some was truncated, and they re-used cues like crazy.  Of course, on our CD we present the music as it was recorded, so it's very difficult to correlate it to the cue sheet.  We'll see how my documentation works for them - I'm really hoping it does and that we can keep our track titles.

I also just had a long telephonic conversation, but mine was quite wonderful.  I had been searching for my calendar in order to call Dave Frishberg about his gig which I'm hosting this Saturday when lo and behold, Dave called me.  He is such a great, easygoing guy and of course he's wonderfully funny.  We had a scintillating conversation if I do say so myself.

I'm cheering for both Donny and Kelly. If it's between the two, I'd rather see Donny go home (sorry DR Laura).  Marie predicted Joanna - her story last night was pretty compelling, but she's just not as known.  It will be interesting.  I know Joanna and Mya are better dancers, but it really is a popularity contest ;)

It isn't like they reallyw ant to give away the million dollars

I looked at a little of Gone With The Wind.  I've actually never liked the film - as a kid and as an adult.  For me, what I've seen of the transfer is disappointing, especially when compared with the superb Wizard of Oz.  I'm reading comments saying how right this look is for a Technicolor film of 1939, but how can people say that and then turn around and say that the Wizard looks right - the Wizard has perfect color, this is just infused with too much yellow.  I'm not talking about a huge amount but enough to throw everything off a little.  And I was surprised not to find it a bit sharper.  Galaxy Quest, which I'm watching now, is also not as sharp as other Blu-Rays I've been watching lately.

My head is still spinning from the onslaught regarding this release.  It has continued, and now there's more stuff that they need to check and it's just madness - they're still saying I can announce on time, so I presume that means they know that they have two weeks to put this to bed.

One woman especially keeps finding new things to fret over - I finally e-mailed her personally saying that I'm doing my best with all this stuff being thrown at us at the eleventh hour and that I wished it had all been layed out months ago.  She responded snippily asking why we didn't request all these logs and cue sheets months ago, and I responded nicely but firmly that I have NEVER had to do this sort of thing with any other studio.  This is all new territory, and unfortunately, it's new territory for them and they're making it up as they go.  With MGM, I license, I pay, they give me the tapes, I put the CD together however I see fit, they don't even hear the CD, they approve the booklet in hours and I ship it.

Very irritating.

No! It must have something to do with the area of the country where you're living. My free shipping from Amazon still coms via USPS and still takes about the same number of days as always. I've noticed no change either positively or negatively.

I really hadn't planned on upgrading. I love the movie, but it's so long that I rarely watch it, and I feel like I've bought it enough.

However, I did read that the 1-disc Target edition will be $12.99 on Black Friday, so I may change my mind by then.

I spent the majority of my evening watching the two remaining items in THE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION: THE COMEDIAN and DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES.

Sadly, they're both in pretty rough shape (surprising since they're the two most recently made. NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS looked much better.)

Still very enjoyable, and there's a very good John Frankenheimer commentary with THE COMEDIAN and complete interview segments with him for both THE COMEDIAN and DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES.

I had never seen the teleplay version of DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES. John Frankenheimer wouldn't agree, but I think Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick have it all over Cliff Robertson and Piper Laurie in the TV version. He was very bitter about not getting to direct the movie of DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES.

Hello, everyone.

Today I met with my new tax accountant, who seems to be on my side, unlike my former (ah-hem) guy. A welcome change. Then I made the trek into the Hills to retrieve some winter clothes. (A friend is letting me store some things at his house.) As warm as the days often are, it can be quite chilly at night here, and since this house is without heat... I now have sweaters and socks and even a winter coat. It was a bit like Christmas.
