Well, you've read the notes, the notes were quick and to the point, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're waiting for the birth of the gazebo.

Cilla, you may have gotten Audacity with your turntable, especially if you bought an Ion brand. That's what we have. It's very easy to use. Most turntables supply you with some kind of software but if you don't have any the good thing about Audacity is it's free and you can download it here:

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

If you don't have one, I recommend that you invest in a record brush as well. You can get them on line or an audio store may have one.

Even though I'm on vacation I'm up early.

Errands to run. Later, gaters.

My turntable also came with CAKEWALK PYRO which is very easy to use with a nice online manual.  I would guess that some kind of software is included otherwise it wouldn't be a USB turntable, so check out what came with - it might be better than anything we have used so far....technology being what it is.

Good morning, all! I had a rather depressing dream about friends and gatherings last night; the dream was about a handsome friend who had stopped seeng friends because of minor burn scars from an apartment fire. I have n idea who the hell this person is, but the dream was about a group of friends trying to get him to see us. The last part of the dream that I can remember involved me with the other friends in a coffee shop and the waitress insisted I owed her money from another occasion in which I hadn't paid my bill.

So, today I have physical therapy at 11:30. Before then I have to cancel my DC reservations for Thursday and Friday - the trip is off for December - and run Act Two of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA to Music Theatre International.

Woooooooohoooooooooooooooo!  I am so happy with the Final Three.  The whole episode is available on the CBS website, I may watch it later.

An inner web site said that FOUR teams were competing in Las Vegas during the taping for the finale - one team being a spoiler and already eliminated so people seeing them wouldn't really know the final three - but people seeing the teams said that the one team was competing in such a lackluster manner, that they must have been the spoiler team....and THEY were right!!!

I will be happy whoever wins  -  but I do have a favorite team!

DR ELMORE the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your waitress is the Ohio Tax Dept and you anticipate owing the money on the property, which is property you don't even use!  The friend portion of your dream  speaks to an acquaintance who seems to be hiding something that is actually in plain sight - as plain as the nose on his face.

DR JRand59, I love your analyses. Thank you!

DR George, thanks for posting the link to Broadwayworld.com and Brent's album; I love the fake shots of him in the studio; I have yet to see any real studio look so blue or have such limitless space. At least I didn't get thanked again for "additional" orchestrations! Yes, it rankles.

Okay here's the skinny, my friend Zachary Spicer just signed on as a semi regular on All My Children.  He tapes three days next week.  I don't know his character name yet - except that he is a good guy trying to get a job in a law firm.  I don't watch the show, so who knows.  Also not sure how far ahead they tape, so I don't know when his story starts.

I triple on Audacity.  For years I used and loved something called TotalRecorder, but with each new release it got more and more complicated and they kept changing the menus and locations of options.  I've finally threw up my hands (which I shouldn't have eaten in the first place) and looked at Audacity and was immediately taken by it.

I am okay with the team that left (did not care for them). But the way they
left was ridiculous.  Who takes a 4 hour penalty??  What kind of a
competitive team would do that?  They had the letters R N A F Z. They knew
the first letter of the word started with 5. OMG!!  How long could it have
taken for them to form the word even if they didn't realize it was an English
word/name.  I mean i get that this team is not that bright at times (they
were much more a physical team). But how stupid to not spend the 4 hours
trying. If they had completed the task in 2 hours i'm sure they would have
been in the F3.  one two three one two three one two three one two
And as for the gay brother promising to help and then leaving. Well that
guy can thank himself if they end up winning. Because Brian and Erika are
very weak. But I still think that guy was totally wrong for leaving the
globetrotter.  And i don't even care for the globetrotters. Yes it was a
race. But there was still a team behind them. And the brother sucked at
the challenge. The only way he got through it was with the globbie's help.
I don't care if they work together. But in a challenge like that, if you agree
to do it, then you need to do it. Because the other guy could have just
as easily finished first. one two three one four three two one two three
As for the Miss America team. They really are lucky. Somehow they manage
to be bad at most tasks. I do not understand how it took them all night
to carry 30 beers. It was dark, and they only had 1 more trip to go. and
then all of a sudden it was light out and they said it had taken all night.
I do like brian. And i did think it was sweet to watch their reactions when
they found out they were not eliminated. They are a nice couple (although
she whines). But they are not good enough to win. The only team that
really deserves it is meghan and cheynne. They are really good. They
always do well no matter what the challenge. And they seem really nice.
I really hope they win! one two three four five six seven eight nine ten

RE:  Last night's THE AMAZIN' RACE

SPOILER WARNING...

It's funny, but when I saw the phone challenge in last week's preview, I suspected that it would be the Globetrotter's downfall.  But I would have never guessed that Big Easy would just give up on it and take a four hour penalty.  I agree with DR Jennifer--that was just plain stupid a move!

The Gay Brothers annoy me to no end.  Their constant bickering seems to come out of nowhere and I never understand exactly what they are arguing about.  And while I prefer Brian and Erika over the Globetrotters, they are in the final three only by chance. Last night was the first time I really did like Meghan--she did her best to keep her teammate focused and in a positive frame of mind during the golum challenge, as opposed to the brothers who kept yelling at each other and Ericka whining "I can't do this!" throughout the night.  At this point , I would be totally shocked if Meghan and Cheyenne don't win the race next week.

I would like to know just how long it took for each of the teams to complete the phone task and the "Legend" and "Lager" tasks.  -Especially the phone task.  I also liked how it was set up to purposely confuse and misdirect the contestants.  I mean, with those five letters, my first guess would have been Mr. Kafka. ;)

And, yes, taking the four-hour penalty was just stupid.  He could have just taken a half-hour break, and then started again.  -Or was he not able to do that once he left the building?  Did he essentially give up once he stepped outside?  -And did that team have to do the Legend or Lager task?

DR Jennifer - As for the time-spam - and the sun coming up... The first team didn't depart for the first task until 9:46pm, so I'm guessing that they didn't start the major tasks until at least sometime around midnight.

The plumber is due at 9.  I am hoping they can simply saw off this 2" cast iron drain (which drains the kitchen sink and dishwasher) and put on an elbow and just bypass the section that's leaking and tie it in to the other 2" drain, which services the rest of the house.  The dispatcher this morning seemed to think that on the surface anyway that would probably work.  Otherwise, they're going to have to jackhammer part of our basement pad up to access the buried drain pipe that's leaking.  I guess maybe it could just be backwash from a clog, but there looks to be a hole just a tad underneath the pad (of course)--there's an opening behind the place where the pipe goes into the floor that I was able to see the water coming up from last night.  Oy and double oy.

Worst case scenario is much, much less than I feared it would be, though still in the low thousands, so I'm breathing a little easier.  They can actually sawcut the pad away to expose the leaking pipe and their bid includes patching the concrete.

My definition of an Historical Epic is that it has to be big in scale and have a specific actual historical event at its core, even if the story widely diverges from actual fact or has passed into myth.

Some of my favourite historical epics would be:

SPARTACUS
ZULU
ZULU DAWN
EL CID
TOMBSTONE
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
BECKET
KHARTOUM
GONE WITH THE WIND (ficitonal story but with the Civil War and the Burning of Atlanta as a big backdrop, it comes close enough)

I would imagine that most anytime there is a Roadblock , the participating team member cannot make any contact with the other member to prevent any conferring (though this probably isn't a strict rule for such things as counting the bells in the tower (Ericka came down to cry on Brian's shoulder before she went back to complete it.)  And unless there was some editing, it looked like the Globetrotters' clue at the Kryocentrum told them to go straight to the Pitstop.

I was sort of disappointed in THE POWER OF TWO.  For one thing, their voices are too similar to my ears to really enjoy the duet aspect.  The arrangements on the uptempo songs strike me as generic.  And Cheyenne pretty much sticks to his upper register and is almost whispery at times, not using that fuller, richer (sexier) sound he has in FINIAN'S RAINBOW.  However, I do like Feinstein's "The Time Has Come" and the two of them on the cd's title song.

I was also very confused as to why the Globetrotters would take that 4 hour penalty. They were not my favorite team and at times were not very good at the challenges, but I have to say that they work very well together.

The brother's do bicker a lot, but then that comes with the territory of being brothers, I think. At times they cracked me up. At other times, like last night, it was annoying and frustrating.

Brian is very patient with his wife...she just gives up too easily.

I was pleased with the top 3 and look very forward to the finale next Sunday!!

Luckily for me, there's nothing on TV tonight I want to see. CASTLE is a rerun. Most shows are in rerun mode tonight.

However, those who watch HEROES and TRAUMA, they are new episodes tonight. And ABC's new reality show at 9 is a fresh episode.

I believe that HOUSE (Fox at 8) is new.

Is Angels and Demons worth a view?

If our Blue-Ray player worked I could tell you!

I called the manufacturer (Memorex) and relayed the following:

Bought Player Dec 5, 2008

Player worked fine until the newer Java BD's hit

Went to the Web site, downloaded the lastest Firmware, installed same and all discs played.

Player has stopped playing all BDs (regular DVDs play fine).

Reinstalled the latest Firmware; unplugged the unit for 2 hours.

Unit still does not play any Blue_ray.

...small gap of silence on the line...
Sir, do you have your receipt?

Yes, I do, it's in may hands.

Sir, FAX or Email us a copy of your receipt and we will send you a prepaid shipping label so you can return the unit for a replacement.

So - I scanned the receipt, send it by Email and received an acknowledgement.

Now we wait - one advantage of being a procrastinating pack-rat: the Player's packing box and and packing materials are still in my bedroom!

On a more positive note - I ordered regular DVD versions of the new movies we wanted from WalMart at their $9.99 free shipping price. Now, it is necessary for us to open the packages to make sure the DVDs work.

We have now watched  the new Star Gate; Angels and Demons arrived today; Night At the Museum and Terminator-Salvation shipped today, and the new Harry Potter will ship next week.

Actually, the first Firmware update went pretty smooth - log onto site, downlosd file, execute file to export upgrade data to USB thumb drive; then just plug the thumb drive into the player and follow the onscreen instructions.

It is clear that my player has developed a non-firmware fault.

SUSPECT IN COP KILLINGS WAS OUT ON STREET DESPITE LENGTHY RAP SHEET, SENTENCES (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,577845,00.html)

Quote
As the suspect in the ambush execution of four police officers remains on the run, questions are swirling as to how and why Maurice Clemmons — an ex-con who at one time faced more than 100 years behind bars — was allowed to live free.

Clemmons, 37, of Tacoma, Wash., has an extensive, violent criminal history marked by volatile and unstable behavior, according to court records and news reports.

His criminal history includes at least five felony convictions in Arkansas and at least eight felony charges in Washington, according to The Seattle Times. He had a lengthy prison sentence commuted in 2000 by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who cited Clemmons' youth.

Clemmons also had at least two confrontations with police earlier this year. During one incident in May, according to the Seattle Times, Clemmons punched a sheriff’s deputy in the face and was charged with seven counts of assault and malicious mischief. In another incident, Clemmons was accused of gathering his wife, Nicole Smith, and young relatives and forcing them to “be naked for at least 5 minutes,” according to a Pierce County sheriff’s report.

“The whole time Clemmons kept saying things like trust him, the world is going to end soon, and that he was Jesus,” the report reads.
As part of the child-rape investigation, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office interviewed Clemmons’ sister in May. She said her brother was “not in his right mind and did not know how he could react when contacted by law enforcement,” a report reads.

“She stated that he was saying that the Secret Service was coming to get him because he had written a letter to the President,” the report continued. “She stated his behavior has become unpredictable and erratic. She suspects he is having a mental breakdown.”

Other relatives said, according to the report, that Clemmons claimed he could fly and that he expected President Obama to visit him to “confirm that he is Messiah in the flesh.”

Clemmons was found competent to stand trial earlier this month on the child-rape and other felony charges by a psychologist at Western State Hospital, court records show.

Well, if JFK's favorite institution, Washington State Hospital, says it so - it must be so.

For readers new to the party, Washington State Hospital was where Frances Farmer was (mis?)treated.

Oh, yes indeed. Memorex has removed all support (or any reference whatsoever) for our model. You can no longer download the firmware update we needed to see "The Dark Knight". Other user boards have commented that Memorex knows they have a lemon on their hands and are replacing all returned players with later models.

Like you, I think their failure to refer me to a Tech Rep or to suggest any other possible TS options was a dead give away. (I did not rub it in).

Before going to lunch, I watched BROTHERS & SISTERS. Well, at least the pregnant-secret is now out in the open. Justin's failing grades didn't get mentioned.

I find that a completely ridiculous storyline, too. He's full of confidence that he "aced" his midterms, and he failed two, made D's on two others, and a C- on the last.

I don't know about anyone else, but I ALWAYS knew when I done well or poorly on an exam. The grade may have varied 5 points either way, especially if there were many/mostly essay questions, but never did I think I had "aced" something and ended up failing.

When I got in, I watched NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2. The delight with the concept is reduced, of course, wit this being a sequel, but they have gathered together an impressive number of improv comedians, and they're just allowed free reign. Hank Azaria is hilarious doing a Boris Karloff impression as an Egyptian almost-pharoah, and, of course, he shows off that incredible physique that he possesses. Bill Hader is also hysterical as General Custer. Amy Adams is gorgeous as Amelia Earheart, and she and Ben Stiller have wonderful rapport.

Repairs are complete.  It was the best case scenario, thank heavens.  To add to the surreality of it all, with two plumbers here fixing things, my front doorbell rings and KGW Channel 8 is standing there with a news reporter and film crew asking if they can IV me for this evening's news vis a vis Nancy's murder.  Then my realtor called and said the bank has returned the contract and is unwilling to pay for any lender required repairs on La Manse, so this may be a dead end, deal wise.

i don't know how much of Keith's details regarding my half shoulder replacement was shared.  Surgical procedure is called a hemiarthroplasty.  following are keith's detail after surgery.

Quote
Jane’s surgery lasted about 4-hours.  Initially, the orthopedist had to determine if the head of the femur could be saved and whether the bone and shoulder joint could be repaired through surgical pins and plates.  This turned out not to be an option so he went ahead and did a shoulder-joint replacement. Though this is a rare surgery and not frequently performed the orthopedist indicated that the procedure went beautifully and there were no complications.

As you might imagine, she is in a lot of pain which is presently being controlled through a semi-automated drug pump that Jane controls--with safety features, of course.  After surgery, she spent about 1 ½ hours in recovery and then was brought to the room.  Upon arrival, she looked like she had been mauled by a grizzly bear and was in significant pain.  After a few hours she appears to have “eased into the pain” and is more comfortable.  If you’d like to call her, the direct-line number is 541-201-4233.  If she’s busy or too groggy she’ll let you know but I think the distraction will be good for her.  She starts solid foods tomorrow and will probably be released on Saturday.  She did get out of bed for a bathroom break while I was there.

Thanks Ben.  I do have my old discwasher from the old days.

DR CILLA LIZ - I second DR BEN's suggestion of Audacity.

My turntable also came with CAKEWALK PYRO which is very easy to use with a nice online manual.  I would guess that some kind of software is included otherwise it wouldn't be a USB turntable, so check out what came with - it might be better than anything we have used so far....technology being what it is.
Thanks, I'll check what's in the box as soon as I have a minute.  Just got home from a very busy day and am off to see the Wizard (of Oz touring company) in a few minutes

"TAR" TALK ahead.....

I agree totally

I had a loverly phone call from Mr Ron Raines who attended today's dress rehearsal of THE TALES OF HOFFMANN at the Met, and I'm ready for bed. Tomorrow is the last day of the McGlinnventory at the law office; we're being evicted and moving to Park Avenue around 20th Street. I am not sure exactly what the new space is. I can't say I'm happy about it since it's a longer travel time but it does mean I will be closer to Toyland.

So, we're missing singdaw and we haven't seen Kevin H recently. I'm hopng JohnG, my reporter friend, will be joining us as well.

Speaking of Kevins, I got tickets to see Mr Kevin Spirtas' new play, which I believe has nudity. Oh, dear, I seeing plays where my friends are naked.

Well, if JFK's favorite institution, Washington State Hospital, says it so - it must be so.

der Brucer

For readers new to the party, Washington State Hospital was where Frances Farmer was (mis?)treated.

I was not aware that President Kennedy had any interest in Western State Hospital.  However, I am sure he would have been interested in the fact that former Governor Huckabee commuted Maurice Clemmons 100+ year prison sentence, because Mr. Clemmon wrote the Governor a letter saying that he had learned his lesson!

I still had about two hours' worth of bonus features on NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2. Some were kind of fun (putting the Jonas Brothers through cherub bootcamp) or informative (how they accomplished Ben Stiller and Amy Adams jumping into that VJ-Day photograph), but some were ridiculous wastes of time.

Anyway, got them all watched and written up. A relief to have a Fox review up before street date. That's a rare occurrence indeed!

I did have time to watch MONK from two weeks ago. This was the episode where Monk got his detective badge back, but the story (while an OK mystery) was so very contrived with his police partners not supporting him after all the good work he had done for the department for 12 years, that I got very angry with the episode. I finished it, but I did so grudgingly.

The Wizard of Oz was really quite wonderful.  Dorothy was played by Cassie O from the Legally Blonde search for elle or whatever it was called.  she was very good. Actually everyone was great. something that doesn't happen with all the tours that pass through here.  The show was sold out...2500 seats in the Orpheum.  Many kids.  It was a long show for kids, but they seemed to enjoy it.

My only complaint was the stage haze.  In the Orpheum it gets really thick and settles in the audience.  It was a little hard to breathe and people were coughing like crazy whenever they did the haze

Favorite films of historical sweep:

Kurosawa's "Ran"
Lean's "Passage to India"
Altman's "Nashville"

The scariest, though, has to be the footage Leni Riefenstahl used in "Triumph of the Will." Pseudo-documentary footage lit, at times, as if by the fires of hell.

By the way, loved "AngelA," too. Completely unexpected and winning. Though there are a couple of scenes where you can see our AngelA standing on a ledge in order to tower over her co-star.

The only good pie place is the Little Pie Factory.

Their Sour Cream Apple Cinnamon is out of this world!       :)

In the spirit of my food-blogging and Yelp-review-reading, a correction/clarification... or two...

It's actually called: The Little Pie Company (http://www.littlepiecompany.com/Default.aspx).

And they're best-seller is their Sour Cream Apple Walnut (http://www.littlepiecompany.com/Products/Sour-Cream-Apple-Walnut__Scaw-10-quot-.aspx).

And I don't feel like putting on my shoes and going out to find some. The only good pie place is the Little Pie Factory.

DR elmore - Good Enough To Eat has good pie. And cakes. And cookies. And brownies. And so on and so forth.  And I've always suspected the Café Lalo actually locally sources some of their baked goods, including their pies.

...asking if they can IV me ...

Considering the time you're spending with commercial bloodsuckers, an IV is probably a good idea.

I am listening to CDs.  Then new expanded Innerspace is now playing.  Not one of my favorite Goldsmith's - too much cheesy synth.  But it has some nice cues.
