Title: HAGIOGRAPHY
Post by: bk on December 07, 2009, 12:03:39 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a bit of hagiography, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently at the MOOvies.

And now, as promised, the new Kritzerland release, another Holy Grail title for many.  You know what to do - if you want it pay via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net - 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping.  It's a great, great score.

“DIFFERENT…”

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition soundtrack – a world premiere release:

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR Music Composed and Conducted by Alex North

For the first time ever, Alex North’s brilliant score to William Wyler’s 1961 film of Lillian Hellman’s The Children’s Hour comes to CD.  One of three scores written directly after Spartacus, The Children’s Hour is classic North.

In 1936, Lillian Hellman’s hit play The Children’s Hour, a controversial and shocking drama about how a horrible lie and the resultant gossip (in this case, the accusation that two female teachers are having a lesbian affair) can ruin lives, was brought to the screen by Hellman and director William Wyler, starring Miriam Hopkins and Merle Oberon as the teachers and Bonita Granville as the evil and malicious child who spreads the vicious rumor and lies.   Because of the Hays’ Office censorship, the film was titled These Three, and no mention of the original title was allowed in any publicity or on the screen (Hellman is credited with the screenplay, but there is no “adapted from the play The Children’s Hour" anywhere to be found).   Obviously all traces of the lesbian issues were removed from the screenplay and it became a standard love-triangle plot.  It’s very unusual for a director to revisit a film made twenty-five years prior but Wyler did just that with The Children’s Hour, which he finally felt he could bring to the screen without having to dilute its subject matter.   The film was indeed very frank and while the “L” word is never mentioned, the subject of two female teachers being accused of having an affair together is talked about blatantly.   Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine give wonderful performances as the two teachers whose lives are ruined by a malicious lie told by an evil, manipulative young girl.  This film, along with a couple of others, caused the Production Code to be completely revamped, and just a few short years later it would, at long last, be abolished and replaced by the MPAA ratings system.

For The Children’s Hour, Wyler turned to Alex North.  Interestingly, both had just come off huge epic films – Wyler with Ben-Hur and North with Spartacus.  So for both, The Children’s Hour could not have been more different; a drama filmed in black-and-white, with nary a toga, a chariot, a slave, or a cross in sight.  And what a score North delivered, with music that was astonishing and complex, with a memorable main theme that runs throughout the score, along with the clever use of children’s nursery rhyme tunes (especially “Skip To My Lou”).  North’s music sounds like no other Hollywood composer of that era – there was just nobody like him, and this is North at the peak of his powers.

Over the years, other labels had inquired about The Children’s Hour – but no tapes existed in the MGM vaults.  Thankfully, North had kept a copy of this score in his archives, which are housed at the Margaret Herrick Library, and through their good auspices the tape was made available to us and it is that tape which was used for this CD.  We had both a copy of the chosen takes from the recording session, and also a tape North had put together for a soundtrack release that obviously never happened.  We used his sequencing and track titles and both tapes were used to create the CD master.   The album contains North’s original main and end title music, both of which, at some point, were rescored, and we’ve included the rescored versions, as well.  It’s fascinating to hear the two approaches to the main title – North’s original works beautifully and times out perfectly with Wyler’s images, while the rescored version works well, albeit in a completely different way, setting a completely different mood.  We’ve also included two other bonus tracks, a brief source music cue, and one cue with an alternate ending.  The sound is mono and very crisp.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the first week of January – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early, and depending on where you’re located, it will probably get to you in time for Christmas).

Now you've got it.  Interestingly, the Terpning family's complete list of posters by Terpning does not include The Children's Hour, but if you look at Birdman or Child is Waiting, it really can't be anyone else.

Good morning, all! I was in bed by 9:30 and the alarm woke me up at 6 this morning. I slept quite well and I'm about to begin a few jobs here before my day takes me around the neighborhood and then down to the studio. We're revording at Avatar on 53rd. Yesterday, after the show, I went backstage to see my friend David Gursky who conducted all of this week while Rob Berman was doing the Kennedy Center Awards in DC. David did a fantastic job yesterday, and he was the principal reason I saw the show yesterday.

Backstage, the orchestra room was in a flurry of activity, with all the music being loaded up to go to the studio. Red Press, onee of my favorite people, was there with his wife to insure tha everything got taken to Avatar, and Josh Clayton and Anna, our harpist, got everything packed away into a rolling trunk. Then Joshie, Anna, Red and his wife headed out for a taxi to deliver the orchestra parts to Avatar Studio. Red's first Broadway show was playing reeds for the original production of GYPSY, and I consider him the foremost Broadway contractor of the past 30 years, if not longer.  I love him dearly and his wife and I were joking that we actually saw each other in Manhattan; we usually meet when Red and I are working on a project for the Library of Congress. I've really got to take Red out for dinner and ask him about every show he ever played on.

So, that's my day. And I will have a further report tomorrow. I suspect that by the time I get in tonight I will be too tired to be really chatty.

TOD:
First horror film: THE HORROR OF DRACULA with Christopher Lee; it scared the bejeezus out of me and I had nightmares for weeks. I wore a crucifix for several weeks as well to keep vampires away,
First sci fi: FORBIDDEN PLANET; I was madly in love with Robby the Robot.

However, I'm almost positive that the first sci-fi movie was THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, followed the next year by THEM!

Since I have my car back - I can do my Monday errands on Monday.  We had a slight dusting of snow, still some on the ground, but none on the streets.

I am still happy about TAR finale last night, but I am not looking forward to the "star" version next time around which will feature a group of "reality" stars, I guess.....including the stupid MAP blonde from you tube.

Last night, DR td wrote:

. . .and I just watched it tonight!

I can understand why the show is losing viewers, I don't think that it has enough story to be a continuing series.  Having read the novel which it is inspired by, I think that the premise calls out for a miniseries, just not a season-by-season show.  Right now, at its mid-season mark, there is still enough story left to finish out a season, but, I cannot see the point in trying to be a long-running series.

That said, I find it one of the fastest paced shows on television and really, really look forward to the next installment.

Who said DEXTER is losing viewers? The last I read, it was SHowtime's highest rated series and was still pulling in the viewers for them. Where did you read otherwise?

Of course, I haven't read the books, but from what I understand, they're not slavishly following them for storylines. They're embarking on their own tangents. But you would know more about that than I would seeing as how you have read the books.

If you write your own hagiography, is it an autohagiography?
The first horror movie I ever saw was "What's the Matter With Helen?" with Shelley Winters, Debbie Reynolds and Dennie Weaver. I can still see the scene of the dead rabbits everywhere and of someone falling under a tractor. Scared the stuffing out of me.
First science fiction I don't remember, but it must have been one of the weekly Godzilla movies that were shown on TV at the time. I enjoyed those as a kid, but I have rarely liked any science fiction movie since my teens. Instead of the "Star Wars" type of movie, I prefer those alternate/futuristic universe stories like "Dark City," "Children of Men" or "Blade Runner."

TOD-- I saw lots of horror films at kiddie matinees, on TV and at the drive-in, but the first one that really scared me,  I think, was a very odd, very cheap  movie called. "Carnival of Souls."  It gave me the creeps.  I saw it some 30 years later, and it still gave me the creeps.  I didn't think it was a good movie (or even all that coherent), but it certainly set a creepy mood.

As far as monsters go, it would probably be the monsters in "The Time Machine" with Rod Taylor or "The Magic Sword" with Gary Lockwood.

TOD:

The earliest horror movie I can remember (which has elements of sci-fi) was THEM!

The earliest sci-fi (which incidentally scared me silly) was TARGET EARTH. I clearly remember the killer robot inching closer and closer to our heroes on a roof, and I wanted to hide under my seat in the theater. Looking at it now, it's laughably cheesy and not the least bit scary.

TOD: First sci-fi: THE DAY THE EARTH STODD STILL
I saw it on TV and it scared me---I really thought that could happen and cou;dn't stop thinking about it!

First horror film: I don't know if it qualifies, but TWO ON A GUILLOTINE. My dad took me to see it when I was in the 4th grade. Seeing Connie Stevens getting her head chopped off was too much for me.

I saw it years later and realized that it's really a pretty silly film, not particularly scary, but I sure thought it was at the time!

All the CLOSER promos and most of the MOACA promos are mine. I really like MOACA. Like THE CLOSER, it gets even better after the pilot and I think it's one of their best original shows; one of the few shows I would probably watch without having some involvement. (I really don't watch much TV. )I'll be interested in hearing what you think of it, Matt!

Way back in the 20th Century when I first got onto the inner web, my portal was the famous Yahoo.  I even had a nice My Yahoo front page.....but as the new century dawned I moved onto other applications.

Today I happened to return to my old MY YAHOO page.  It is a most ingenious application....you can even add your Facebook information there to get updates....and all that other stuff.

So I have returned to the Yahoo fold, and have made it my HOMEPAGE instead of GOOGLE.  If you haven't been to YAHOO lately, check it out.  You can get local weather, national news and sports headlines, tv listings, and much more ALL on your home page.  Many more apps are available.

Of course those with hand held Dick Tracy gadgets may still find it cumbersome.  But for those of us who still surf while sitting at a desk, it is nice.  You can can also add a personal calendar.

Btw...

I did watch "The 12 Men of Christmas" and found it quite cute. -Although, the final wrap-up really did happen quite quickly.  However, by that time, they had already shown all the men being photographed for their calendar poses (http://www.mylifetime.com/movies/12-men-of-christmas/christmas-calendar#id=1), so... ;)

When I clicked on the link that DR vixmom provided the other day, I was actually a little surprised.  When she mentioned that DR the vixter and her classmates would be heading to The Met to see an opera, I figured it was going to be the upcoming return of their production of Hansel & Gretel, and then I clicked on the link...  Needless to say, Strauss' Elektra is quite a different opera-going experience.

Yes, nothing screams Christmas (literally) like 'Elektra.'  I just reviewed a BD version that, while incredibly well sung, had been "reimagined" into something akin to Fosse's 'Cabaret," complete with cross dressing ensemble members.  I kid you not.

DR JRand (once again) - That's cool that they're doing lunchtime cabarets at The Beechman.  Alas, since I'm attending Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Gypsy of the Year (http://www.broadwaycares.org/Page.aspx?pid=263) competition/presentation later this afternoon... and since I have a couple of things to take care of here around the apartment before I head down to The Palace, I don't think I'll be able to swing on down to 42nd Street and 9th Ave.

Yep, very happy about last night's TAR outcome, too!  And I think the show's editors are probably to be congratulated as much as the winners for the way they were able to make the end of the race still seem exciting.

As for the next season's contestants being comprised of reality show stars, I say Ugh!

As for the Topic of the Day....

Hmm...

As for first horror movie, well... The one that sticks in my head is "Trilogy of Terror" - it was shown as part of the afternoon movie series on Channel 7(?) in New London, CT, when I was nine.  The first one I can remember seeing in a movie theater would have to be "The Amityille Horror".  Or maybe "Poltergeist".  -I'm too lazy to check the IMDB right now for the release dates.

As for my first sci-fi movie, well... I guess it was "Star Wars"... OH! Actually, it was "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". -Although, I'm sure I saw a sci-fi or two on the Tee-Vee before then.

I watched BROTHERS & SISTERS before I headed out for lunch. It brought me to tears a couple of times, but some of those plots are SO telegraphed. (Who wants to bet that Nora will lose all the money she invested? He either steals the money or the concept goes bust.)

I got so furious when Kitty got the results over the phone and refused to share them with Robert that I almost cut the TV off and vow never to watch the show again. How MANY times do the lazy writers on this show have to resort to such a RIDICULOUS plot contrivance?

When I got in from lunch, I watched G-FORCE. Better than the made-for-home video BUDDIES movies, that's for sure, but it's still for young kids and members of the ritalin generation. There were some laughs, but reliance on things like fart jokes and references to culture references like McGyver and Die Hard and Terminator kept it at arm's length for me. Famous voices in the cast like Penelope Cruz and Tracy Morgan and Steve Buscimi didn't always make for a felicitous group and the mix of live action and CG animation was handled pretty well.

I got all of the bonus features watched except all of the Cine-Explore commentary with all of the inserted video tangents. I watched about a half hour of that. None of the other bonuses were very long at all. Most were 4-5 minutes long. They were all in HD, though. That's nice to see that.

Very disappointed here...I drove eight miles to G Boys, which used to be the place for Christmas decorations in my neck of the woods. But as I walked through the aisles I found the shelves sparsely stocked with little or no variety of items.  They either decided to understock this year due to the economy or they are planning on closing up.  I didn't have the heart to ask any if the employees about what was going on.  It would be a shame to lose another ages old family run business in this area.

The first horror movie I can recall watching (or trying to watch) was FIEND WITHOUT A FACE on TV.  I remember I kept hiding my eyes under a blanket on the sofa.

First sci-fi? I think it was VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET with Jerry Lewis.

Topic of the Day:

I can't remember the first sci-fi or horror movies that I saw because my sister and I used to watch a lot of those on Saturdays on TV, when we lived in Colorado (we moved there when I was seven years old).  One of the earliest horror movies that I can remember seeing and scaring me is "Beware! The Blob."  I used to sleep with my arm under my pillow and my hand would stick out from underneath.  After I saw that movie, I believed that the Blob would come into my room and eat my hand!  Not me, just my hand.

:D

T.O.D.

THE SPACE CHILDREN - I am not sure that this was the first Sci-Fi film I saw, but it was the first one that made an impression on me.

FRANKENSTEIN or DRACULA It was probably one or the other of these Universal films.  They played all the time on television in the 50s.

Yep, very happy about last night's TAR outcome, too!  And I think the show's editors are probably to be congratulated as much as the winners for the way they were able to make the end of the race still seem exciting.

As for the next season's contestants being comprised of reality show stars, I say Ugh!

I am curious where you have seen mention of other reality show contestants being on next season. I have only heard about jeff and jordan from big brother.

Who is "that north carolina princess"?

I actually think that if there were other reality show contestants then it would have been leaked. There were people at the airports taking pictures.

This line I've quoted before is from the website description for TRILOGY OF TERROR starring Karen Black - one of those lines which, had it appeared in a feature film, would be a classic of horror quotes:

When Chad starts to cough, Julie tells him that he will first experience dizziness, then mild paralysis...followed by total cardiac arrest. "You've drugged me!" he says. Her response is to the point: "No dear, I've killed you."

Tonight I attended a choral holiday performance by the choir of Clare College, Cambridge.  About 26 singers, mixed [men & women], and all under the age of 25.  It was an outstandingly sung program, with a lot of startling new music [4 premieres].  I think a lot of blue-haired ladies got much more dissonance than they bargained for in a holiday program, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ah ha! Now your comments make much more sense! Yes, FLASHFORWARD has been hemmoraging viewers since the premiere, and it now tends to rank 3rd in the timeslot behind SURVIVOR and BONES, not what ABC was looking for. (UGLY BETTY was drawing about the same ratings last season.)

This new show that ABC will run for 13 episodes in the time slot: I predict if it does well consistently, they'll order more episodes of it and when they bring back FLASHFORWARD, the episode will be shown on Friday or Tuesday, wherever they can plug it in with the least damage.

Next I watched THE GLASS SLIPPER which I had recorded from TCM-HD one or two mornings ago. It was a very poor quality print of the film. It was open matte, so there were tons of head room that gave the movie a weird appearance. The Eastman Color was fading in some scenes, and none of it was very sharp to begin with.

Color me disappointed.

Scary movies -- well, the one I remember was when I somehow ended up in front of the TV alone as a very young kid and started watching The Time Machine.  Now, this is one of the worst movies, and boring, too.  But as a little kid, I was focused on the scene in which Wells gets into the Time Machine and is traveling through the centuries, and we see brick walls caving him in, and what I realize now must have been lava pouring down the streets, but which I interpreted as blood flowing through the streets, and he seemed trapped in and claustrophobic and suffocating . . . and, well, suffice it to say, I slept with a bright light on in my room for a full year after this.   I was completely traumatized.

As far as I know, the first sci-fi film that I saw (or the first that I remember seeing) was QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE. I watched it with my cousins Molly and Bobby in their upstairs family room. I was about 4 years old, I guess.

First horror film that I remember seeing was likely THE BIRDS, which my sister was watching on television when I happened to come down stairs. Again, I was around 4 years old.

Boy, DR Julie and I certainly have different opinions of THE TIME MACHINE. I think it's STILL a marvelous sci-fi film. It thrilled (and scared) me as a kid and I enjoy revisiting it; what's more, the Oscar-winning special effects still hold up in certain scenes, and Rod Taylor is such a pleasure to the eyes that for eye-candy alone it's worthwhile.

I'm waiting to hear Jose's report on Gypsy of the Year.

And here it is...

In short, I loved it!  I may try to sneak in tomorrow to see the skits again, but, more importantly, I want to hear what the final fundraising tallies are - especially for A Steady Rain.  -Rumor has it that they may have raised an almost record-breaking $1.2 MILLION!!

It was interesting to note that a bunch of the skits featured cast members from various shows singing alt-rock/folksy songs - very Jason Mraz-y.  However...

The Opening Number really got things off to a great start.  It was a "So You Think You Can Dance?" parody - complete with Christopher Sieber as Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Birdsong as Mary Murphy.  -Oh, and Paul Canaan (from the "Legally Blonde: The Search for the Next Elle Woods" as Cat Deeley!  And Ryan Kasprzak even made a special guest appearance.  I also really liked the skit presented by "The Men of Chicago": 9th Avenue Story.  Basically, it was a "Man meets Twink" story. ;)

The Vixter though that Elektra was ok - the music and singing were good but she had trouble with some of the staging and with some of the actors' performances

She was particulary annoyed by the fact that when Elektra was dragged off stage to be whipped the person with the whip who supposedly was to do the deed dawdeled so long at getting off stage that the beating  was over before she had exited the stage - "Way to take me out of the moment , dude"

She also thought that Elecktra's death left a lot to be desired - "She just took her time and slowly stretched out and lay down like to she was getting comfortable for a nap - nice death scene  - duh!"

The Vixter is a bit of a fanatic on Greek mythology - she has been reading about it since she was 6.  Apparently the teacher began aquainting thr class with the story line in preparation for the trip and the Vixter kept correcting her and filling in the backstory until the teacher finally conceded that Vix had much more knowledge on this particular story that she did and let Vix take over the class -  Vixter now has  a new nickname - Greekapedia

*The Opening Number also provided some of the biggest laughs of the afternoon - along with the customary not-so-nice digs at various people in and out of the industry.  One of the "best" jokes was in a sequence where "Cat Deeley" was calling out the names of various choreographers, and then the dancers would then dance in that style for a couple of counts...

"Jerome Robbins"... West Side Story
"Bob Fosse"... Sweet Charity
"Michael Bennett"... A Chorus Line
"Rob Ashford"... Thoroughly Modern Millie
"Jerry Mitchell"... Hairspray
"Tyce Diorio".... No! No! NO! NO!

-The cheering was deafening!!! :D

OH! They went to the final dress today!  Very cool!!

*And, actually, DR the vixter's "review" seems to jive with what I heard from some friends who also went this morning.  -Of course, that means that The Times will love it. ;)

Well, I think I shall wander up to bed.  I have a feeling I will be going to work in the morning for a short time.  Actually I'm hoping to be home by noon so I can roast the whole chicken I bought at the store yesterday and make a nice big meal that will give me left overs for awhile.

DR vixmom - I know that is a lot of money, and the timing of the expense is probably not the best, but...

When was the last time you had any major work done on the car?  If you break it down month-by-month, it's probably not that bad.  I still remember going into "shock" whenever I had to have to some work down on my still-missed and beloved 1993 Escort Wagon.  However, besides the routine oil changes and tires, I only "invested" about $3000 over the 16-year lifespan of the car.  Not bad at all.  -But, yes, those $700-900 repairs were always a bit ouch-y.

*And, remember, your Christmas bonus from work is bound to cover the cost of the car repairs with plenty of money left over for presents. :)

I am back from the sessions for what will be a very wonderful recording of the score. It is certainly the most music ever recrded from the score and I think pur mighty cast will be wonderful. It was an exhausting day so I will not catch up on posts till tomorrow.

Good night, all!

Glad to hear you had a great day in the recording studio! I look forward to the details.

Trying to get that basket away from Toby and Dylan was a chore.  They though FTD stood for "For Toby & Dylan."

;D

Thanks DR DAW.....love Beeker!  And I hadn't seen that before!

DR JRand - Did you catch the Muppets during Blake Lively's opening monologue (http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clips/blake-monologue/1182382/) from this past weekend's "SNL"? The Swedish Chef and Beeker make an appearance. :)

Still watching Julie and Julia.  I'm thinking Meryl Streep would now make a perfect Minnie Kritzer.
