Well, you've read the notes, the notes were festive and filled with birthday cheer, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they promised they'll be home in time to send birthday wishes.
-
And the word of the day is: BONHOMIE!
-
Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday, Bruce!
-
TOD: How I came to know you, Bruce, is somewhat shrouded in the mists of time. I know that when Bay Cities was formed and began releasing CDs I desperately wanted, I wrote the company and thanked whomever. I don't know if you got the note or not.
My first awareness of you, IIRC, came over at filmus-l during an exchange you were having with Mr. Caps. Later, during a skirmish I was having with a certain Mr. Guttke at r.m.m., you invited me here...and thatta, as they say, was thatta!

Happy Birthday to "well, me".

Last evening, while watching the "Carrie Underwood Holiday Special", I actually uttered this infamous phrase:
Where is "Bruce Kimmel when you really need him!"
der Brucer
I suspect Middle America was a bit surprised to see a Holiday Special opening number consisting of a leather clad diva backed by 6 Hunky chorus boys in clad in pseudo Village People drag. (Actually the number was elaborately choregraphed, clearly well rehearsed, and nicely executed - it was amazing to see how fast a spiffy opening could degenerate into a really bad variety show - ill conceived bits poorly written and acted accordingly. It was a blatant infomercial for Underwood's latest album and the show had no Holiday feel to it at all. And Carrie's "Oh Holy Night" lighted by heavenly spots from above did little to redeem her Dolly Parton put-on.

Glad I missed....

The Very Happiest of Birthdays for Our Very Own BK!!

Note to BK - when you ponder the "open" rate for your Eblasts - consider that those of us who have already read your annoucement here might just choose to delete the Kritzerland messsage.

Glad I missed....
Actually, if you could skip through and only watch the musical numbers it would be a fair show. Brad Paisley, David Cook and Dolly Parton each had nice offerings - but Kristen Chenowith was wasted. Keen ears would be saddened to notice that Dolly has a noticeably weakend "belt".

The evening was greatly enriched by visits with Brenda and Joel and also the Castle family.

Obama Spokesman: 'Silly' Not to Allow Vet to Fly Flag
WASHINGTON -- White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday that it is "silly" to think that a 90-year-old Medal of Honor winner is being asked to remove a flagpole from his front yard.
Retired Army Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II veteran, is fighting to keep the 21-foot pole at his suburban Richmond home. His homeowners association said the pole violates the neighborhood's aesthetic guidelines. It pushed back a deadline to remove it to Friday.
Gibbs said during a briefing that he hasn't spoken directly to President Barack Obama about the flap. But he said "the president believes -- I think all of us believe -- that the very least we can do is show our gratitude and thanks to somebody that served our country so admirably."
He went on to say that "it's silly to ... think that somebody that's done that can't have a flagpole and ... show the proper respect and appreciation that any flag deserves by flying that in their neighborhood."
I wonder if views would be any different if the flag flying was the Stars and Bars?

Tuesday morning greetings! I woke up at 4am, thinking about lots of things that needed to get done. At 5:20, I finally gave up, got up, and have washed dishes and gotten Rob's graduation announcements started. I have also decided that further Christmas preparations will just have to wait until after Saturday's commencement festivities.
Today I'm taking my mother to see the studio apartment that she may move into in the "Big House" at her retirement community. While I'm away Richard will be here supervising the crew that's going to wash our windows inside and out and install our storm windows for the winter. Considering the forecast of high winds tomorrow, it's a good thing they're coming today.

Happy, happy!
I first discovered you when vinyl was king, and I picked up a copy of "Stages" from a record shop in Cincinnati. That must have been in 1984, about six months before I moved to Middletown, Ohio, and met Dr. Elmore. I discovered you again, albeit with your producer's cap and singer's cap, when "Unsung Musicals" came out and you gave us such wonders as "New Words" and "Disneyland." I've been enjoying the albums ever since and look forward to many more.

DR JohnG - I've waited until we're here at the same time to answer your question about my Dawn Powell reading. I've just finished her second novel She Walks in Beauty, which she really considered her first. She disavowed Whither shortly after its publication. I'm trying to read her novels in order as the first stages of a project that I hope will become a Chautauqua-style re-enactment of her that I'll write and perform.

Happy Birthday, BK!
TOD: I noticed that the CDs I listened to the most had the name "Bruce Kimmel" as producer. Then one day while googling to see if Jason Graae had a new CD to buy for my daughter, I came across some new record label where BK was the producer. When we were at Jason Graae's Cinegrill show, Jason told us that Guy Haines had been in the audience, but he slipped out before we had a chance to meet him. Luckily BK was still there and we met him.
-
We had a bit of weather during the night here.

Can it be another year? ;D

TOD:
I saw Mr BK's name on several CD's I had purchased including FILM MUSIC OF RONALD STEIN, UNSUNG BROADWAY, THE ULTIMATE TITANIC ALBUM, SUPERMAN television cues......
Doing a search for something on Amazon, I came across BENJAMIN KRITZER - and the cover was most interesting, so I ordered it.
Then a friend, MR JMK, was asking me about a trivia question he was trying to figure out, and it turned out to be one from the old site....and a few months later I came here.....and here we are. I remembered MR BK from some television work, and from reading about TFNM in a Cult Film book, I wanted to see it.....anyway.
Here we are.

We had "red sky at morning" during my walk earlier, so I'm prepared for the rain in the forecast later today and tomorrow. Still, it's cold but not frigid, and that's acceptable for December.

TOD:
I noticed the name on the Bay Cities cast albums, and then started noticing it in CD reviews in SHOW MUSIC and THEATER WORLD (and later IN THEATER), many of which CDs I bought and enjoyed thoroughly.

I didn't hear any UPS delivery earlier, so it looks like today will be a day off for me. This is good because I have some Photoshop projects I want to work on and need the time to do so.

TV Tidbits:
BETTER OFF TED, the dry, droll comedy show that had a brief first season run last year on ABC, returns for its second season tonight at 9:30 on ABC.
CBS has an all-rerun slate tonight so no new NCIS episode.

I am looking forward to watching last night's CASTLE while I eat lunch. Should be a good time.
-
I must reiterate everything that MR BK said last week about the two part John Woo movie RED CLIFF and RED CLIFF II.
I am not up on my Chinese history, so it was a nice lesson as well. The performers were all outstanding - the men very handsome and the ladies beautiful. The personal stories were interesting and touching. I imagine some of the humor was missed in subtitles, although now and then it came through.
The battle scenes were wonderful and jaw dropping. I will join MR BK in recommending this movie. I got the two DVD - individual packaged not a set - on EBAY in a Region Free edition for about $16 including shipping from an American seller. It is probably my favorite movie of the this year.
-
First real awareness of BK as a standout talent was IIRC when I watched the Dinah Shore variety show in the 1970's.
I did go to the NYC opening day of FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL at the 68th Street Playhouse, and at that point I was already very aware of BK as a talent.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRUCE!

Good morning, all!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday Wishes to Our BK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A composer friend from The Drama Book Shop, Thom Heinrichs, and I in Spring 1980 went to a one-day showing of THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL at the old Thalia revival house at 95th and Broadway. We saw the 7:00 showing, and at 11 I went back to catch the final showing. The next day at the Book Shop I told everyone that it was one of the funniest films I'd ever seen and that I wanted to work with the director. I bought the album and played it to death. One day I was raving about the movie in the shop and a very sweet customer named Lila told me she had gone to college with BK and I learned what I could from her. She was a neat lady and I haven't seen her in about 30 years now.
In 1990, I was ingloriously sacked from a big project i was working on and for two years I worked very little, mostly surviving on the Book Shop income and the monthly salary from the Gay Men's Chorus as staff arranger with occasional jobs from the Cole Porte Trust and Kurt Weill Foundation and playing suicide every month: if I could take care of the bills and not go to the roof to jump, then I was hanging in there. In 1991 or thereabouts FANFARE magazine published an interview with BK about Bay Cities, and I thought, what can you lose? and called Bay Cities. By a fluke, the phone was answered by Mr Kimmel, so he couldn't not respond to a message to call an unknown schlub in Manhattan, and we talked, at the most, for 15 minutes, the gist of it being that I should send him a demo and maybe at some point something might happen. After I'd thought I would never hear from him and the suicide game continued monthly, i got a phone call one day about an abum with Liz Callaway and Frank Loesser. I said yes, met with Liz and found a new wonderful friend and Bay Cities folded. The project was off.
This was good for two reasons: BK went to Varese Sarabande and Liz lost the awful man who was going to be musical director and arranger. Her second choice at the time of our first meeting was an old friend of mine, Alex Rybeck, and that began another great collaboration that continues.
So, BK dumped on me the news that not only would we be be recording Liz but in the following week we would do a recording of Sondheim's incidental music and little known songs. I remember very little about the pre-Sondheim rehearsal/auditions/scoring now but I still remember the rehearsals with Liz and Alex to discuss thoughts and opinions on what to do with the great Frank Loesser and BK's first appearance at a rehearsal to give his input on what had been going on in these sessions. I remember digging through old NYCGMC Carnegie Hall programs for names of musicians to record and how wonderful most of them were. we lost early a kvetching violinist and, during Liz's sessions I had to replace a mediocre trombone but we got a great one in return, and that band became the core of the New York players for all future albums. I remember giving BK names and numbers of friends in Manhattan - Jason and Rebecca Luker are two of them from New Amsterdam Theatre Co, The Men's Chorus, and John McGlinn - and I can't tell you how many people I met through BK in the Vareses and Fynsworth years who became friends as well.
So, we recorded Liz and Sondheim and I was exhausted from doing two albums back to back. My being sacked in 1990 had left me vulnerable and insecure about my work because after I was sacked, the word put out was that I was delivering unsatisfactory goods. I spent the two weeks of sessions thinking, i'm being fired today. On the last day of recording the UNSUNG SONDHEIM, BK on his his way out to pack up and return to Los Angeles, stopped to remind me about my trip to LA to mix the recordings and his last words were something to the effect of "be sure to sign up for frequent flyer mileage." And I thought, I'm not being fired. I love this man.

TOD: Back in the early 80's, a friend of mine was housesitting at his father's girlfriend's house. It was much nicer than any place anyone in our group of friends lived in so we all took to hanging out there and working our way through their movie collection and popcorn. Among them were a few risque films: THE FRENCH QUARTER and TFNM, so obviously we had to watch them!
The phrase "It's just so BEEEEEEEEG" was instantly adopted in our repertoire of catch phrases. And that was the first time I was aware of bk, who was my favorite cast member. I remember being impressed that he wrote and directed it, too!
-
Awww...Elmore, that's such a sweet story!

Once again, old chum, have the happiest of birthdays. Wish I was there so I could take you to dinner at Musso and Frank's, where you could have your beloved Crab Louie slathered in Thousand Island Dressing and I, the chopped steak.
TOD: I was very aware of BK's name constantly appearing on records I was buying. We met briefly once at Mystery and Imagination Book Store in its old location where we were introduced by the owner.
Years later, I was in the same store at its new location where, as it happened, Mr. Kimmel was giving a reading of the first two Kritzer books. The reading was very funny. I went up after, had cake and diet Coke, bought his books, had him sign them, re-introduced myself, we chatted and immediately hit it off. He said I should do an interview of this very site. Gave me his email address. I wrote, he sent me a slew of questions, I answered them, I guess they're still up in the interview site, and the rest...as they say, is history. We've been through many a faboo dinner, book fair, partay, memorabilia show, and just hanging out together since.

Happy Sixty-two Years of Life to BK!!!
-
Yesterday's sessions, which were around 12 hours long, produced some wonderful performances and some excellent playing from the orchestra. I think it will be a really good cast album. It was great to see everyone and I am very happy with what I heard go to tape.
Personally, I left last night feeling frustrated and rather useless. I could have stayed home and the day would have been fine without me. I was a fifth wheel and I can only blame the limited space at the studio for the problem. It's a great studio with friendly staff and I can see why PS Classics lkes using it, but the booth is small, there's liittle room outside the booth for a large group to be comfortable and I had no place to sit, settle, unpack my scores and do what I like to do at a session. I feel I'm there to keep an eye on the music, answer questions or provide speedy solutions, and help things run smoothly for the conductor, basically the things Joshie did accomplish yesterday. I spent most of the day sitting on the arm of Josh's chair in the booth since there was not enough space to seat the guests and the crew.
I was sent into the studio at one point to make room for the producers, press, widow of Burton Lane, etc., to keep an eye on wrong notes but my presence made Rob Berman the conductor, justifiably uncomfortable with me standing next to him; and if I moved around, the violinists complained that I was distracting them peripherally. If I went into the booth, I often got singled out for talking during the order for quiet, even if the discusson prompting my censure was the finish of something about the score that Josh and i were debating or the answer to a question from Red Press - who sends his greetings, BK - and at one point, one of the recording execs rather pointedly told me publicy in a break that I was talking too much, which I sort of brushed off as "well, Josh starts it" since Josh was the person I was talking to when the comment was thrown at me, but that did rankle since I spent the day in state of uselessness and frustration.
On the plus side, it was nice to see people outside the theatre, I got to meet Burton Lane's lovely widow, I gave two of the producers and the stage manager copies of "Christmas Mornings," and the catered meals were quite wonderful, even if the crowded conditions meant dining while sitting on the floor and praying no one would knock over your drink. One of our producers, Mr Kevin Spirtas, showed up and, yes, folks, I'm going to see more of Kevin than I ever expected in his current play this weekend.
-
And now I'll be heading downstairs to start on my little photo project. Then it'll be time to start cooking lunch and having an afternoon of leisure viewing.
WBBL.

Thank you so much for sharing your story of the recording session, DR Elmore. Sorry it couldn't have been more comfortable for you, but I'm glad you were there for troubleshooting and to lend moral support to the cast. I'm sure it was appreciated.
-
And now I'm REALLY going!
;D
-
Thanks for the report, DR elmore3003. I understand why it felt frustrating for you.
-
As to the recording events, we began with the orchestra since they were reading unfamliar material and we had two extra violinists to bring up to the prepared level of the pit players and the crew could adjust sound levels and fix mikes during the readings . The Overture was recorded complete, but it's cut down in the production, so Rob had several sections to run through with the band along with the original unused Entr'Acte. Those were recorded along with the dances to "If This Isn't Love" and "When The Idle Poor Become The Idle Rich," which had additional cut material put back. The second session began with Cheyenne and Kate Baldwin doing their duets, followed by the mighty Chris Fitzgerald doing his two duet with Kate, who then was released with Cheyenne (back at 7), his "When I'm Not Near The Girl I Love" and his reprise of "Something Sort of Grandish" with the kids. I think at that point, we did "The Begat" with the gospel trio. Chuck Cooper, our lead, was flying back from Atlanta from taping the Monique Show yesterday morning, and we would overdub him at the end of the sessions.
During the late afternoon the ensemble began arriving and we spent the third session doing the numbers with the leads and the ensemble. The final session was ensemble and when I left the studio with the band, Chuck Cooper was recording his part of "The Begat."
It will be a wonderful record of this production

The really BIG news would be if you had NO weather at all.

Well... Sadly... Unfortunately...
First of all, I'm not exactly sure why you would post such a comment/response of this board.
Secondly... Steve's family is from Richmond. Steve's brother flew the "stars and bars" outside of his house. One day, someone walked up to his house, knocked on his door, then shot him point blank in the face.
And that's the end of my "response".

What flag IS he flying? I would be very much surprised to learn it was other than "Old Glory"!
Well... Since I have some ties to Richmond... And since I have sort of been following this story already....
Just to be clear, the homeowner's association has no problem with the flag. They have a problem with the flagpole. -It should also be noted that this is not the first flagpole controversy in Richmond.
For additional info, he's a LINK (http://www.nbc12.com/Global/story.asp?S=11637977) to some of the local coverage.
*And the flag he was flying was the "stars and stripes".
-
And on those not-so-cheery notes... (Sorry)
It's time for me to get the rest of my day in gear. I have a few errands to run, a possible return trip to the Gypsy of the Year this afternoon, and I think I'm going to hear the New York Philharmonic tonight.
Laters...
-
For the record, for any who may be confused, "Old Glory" is a commmonly used nickname for "The Stars and Stripes" (or, the Flag of the United States of America).
The Stars and Bars was a flag of the Confederacy.

Happy, happy, happy birthday to our Bruce!!
My parents knew BK's parents well before we came on the scene, and socialized frequently. My older sister was born three months before Bruce, and I was born a year later, followed by Rikki and Mike. I believe we have home movies of BK as a toddler at our birthday parties... Then, of course, at Hamilton High - where I met Jane (having known Keith from the same childhood birthday parties), I was in the drama group with Bruce, and even had parts in some of his earliest directorial efforts in Hollywood...
JANE!!! I am elated that you're totally of that morphine, and progressing well.
-
Wow - did I really just begin Page 4 with a Happy Birthday Hora???
-
GREAT NEWS, HAINESHIS WAY:
Vixmom just posted over at FaceBook (with dispensation from her boss to do so) that her petscan results are back...and she's 100% in remission.
-
(And Debra, I hope you don't feel I stole your thunder. I worried that your boss may not have given you dispensation to post here...and the news was TOO GREAT to wait until later).
-
Wow - did I really just begin Page 4 with a Happy Birthday Hora???
Hmmmm....does that make you a hora monger?
-
The Rant & Rave was PACKED last night, and all 8 offerings were KILLER!!! I had so much fun, and loved performing my piece. I ended the first half - blissed out, I tell yiz. A radio show host was in the house - and it looks like R&R may just have a radio presence... fingers x'd...
And I had good news about a story of mine, which was shelved about a year and a half ago when Chicken Soup for the Soul didn't publish the volume it was meant for... then, a couple of months ago, they wrote to tell me they hauled it outa storage and dusted it off for possible inclusion in another book, coming out on March 23, that I was definitely in the running... and they asked for a release and a bio. So yesterday, I got an email that I'm in the final mix of stories, with a typeset copy of the story for final proofreading/accuracy check. I made one correction (someone had erroneously renamed German Town in the east 80's 'Little Germany' ), signed off on it, and sent it off. Yikes!!! Whatta day!!
And this morning I go back to this #%&**()%^ grant application... almost there... deadline tomorrow...
-
Wow - did I really just begin Page 4 with a Happy Birthday Hora???
Hmmmm....does that make you a hora monger?
Hahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa!!!!!

Hey, I just noticed a milestone - 2800 posts - which now, of course, becomes 2801...

For MR BK:
If You Were Born Today, December 8: You are an enthusiastic and determined person who has high ideals as well as very big plans and goals. A deep thinker, your morals are unusual yet strong, and your courage is great, particularly when it comes to standing up for a cause you believe in. You have a definite religious or philosophical bent. You are exceptionally attractive no matter what you look like. You are frequently devising new plots and challenges for yourself.
When a Quarter Moon occurs in your Return chart, as it does this year, you are at some sort of a turning point in your life, in terms of personal growth. Events that occur this year act as catalysts that get you in touch with some important issues in your emotional life. There may be some kind of conflict in your life arising from a great urge to do something different. The year ahead promises to be a busy, dynamic, and significant period in your life.
Self-confidence and action are highlighted in the year ahead, with the Sun trine Mars in your Solar Return.
Something you write or say could lead to opposition from others. Your need to investigate and read between the lines is strong this year. It's best used for research and increased awareness of psychological motivations, both of others and yourself. Some difficulties and delays with communications are likely. Your thoughts are quite sober at times, and you should do your best to avoid negative thinking.
2010 will be a Number Five year for you. Ruled by Mercury. This is a year of exploration and freedom. It's a time when exploration and reaching out to others brings opportunities. It's a good time to advertise and sell. Surprises are in store, and the routine is broken. This is a year when exciting relationships can be formed, or, if you are already in a partnership, new life is breathed into the relationship. Advice - explore, look for adventure, keep your eyes open for opportunities, mingle.
-
Radio and Book vibes for the lovely and talented DR PENNY O.
-
This is most encouraging because 2009 is a 4 year for MR BK ruled by Uranus.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRUCE!!!!!

-
Congratulations are also in order for DR PennyO on wonderful new artistic possibilities! :D
ditto!
-
DR ELMORE you know if you hadn't been there, something would have happened and somebody would have hollered: "Where is Larry Moore?"
-
PennyO, what wonderful news about your story!
-
And PennyO, you must get those old home movies transferred to DVD and uploaded to Youtube so that we can see you and BK as kids!
-
I am so grateful for DR vixmom's wonderful health news!!!!!! :) :) :)
so am i, thank you for sharing the new ron.
-
thanks penny and congrats to you.
-
the new ron
Which I infinitely prefer over the old ron. ;)
-
i'm about to leave for my book discussion group holiday gathering. :D

-
the new ron
Which I infinitely prefer over the old ron. ;)
lol, i thought i had the s added in time, too late to modify now that you have commented :)

AS THE WORLD TURNS will go off the air in September 2010.
-
DR ELMORE you know if you hadn't been there, something would have happened and somebody would have hollered: "Where is Larry Moore?"
It would have been their loss, wouldn't it?
I think I'm mostly angered at myself for getting some grief because I let my frustration make me restless and less professional than I'd like to be.
-
I'm up, have printed out orders, read birthday wishes, and best of all read these wonderful posts! Love them.
-
elmore, was it Lila Davis? I think about her often and wonder how she's doing.
-
AS THE WORLD TURNS will go off the air in September 2010.
It's about time.

Start spreading the new!

I had no hair but BIG sideburns back then.

TV Tidbits:
BETTER OFF TED, the dry, droll comedy show that had a brief first season run last year on ABC, returns for its second season tonight at 9:30 on ABC.
CBS has an all-rerun slate tonight so no new NCIS episode.
But there is a 2 hour SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE starting t 8pm.
-
And THE BIGGEST LOSER finale
-
DR JENNIFER this is stupid girl I was talking about
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww
There is no reason for her to be on THE AMAZING RACE with another team of BB castoffs, unless ALL of the teams are some kind of reality "star" or public joke.
-
TOD - I was a major tv watcher growing up. I remember watching Bruce as a guest star on many of the shows I watched regularly. I didn't know his name then but knew his face.
I had several of the CDs he produced and was listening to a Lost in Boston - the one Rupert is on, when all of a sudden "I Love Fish" came on. It wasn't listed on the CD and I was really at a loss of where it came from...so I emailed Rupert Holmes who wrote back "That's Bruce Kimmel" he told me a bit about Bruce and I did a search that led me to this site.
As soon as I saw the photos I knew he was the guy I saw on TV a lot as a kid. The rest is history

GREAT NEWS, HAINESHIS WAY:
Vixmom just posted over at FaceBook (with dispensation from her boss to do so) that her petscan results are back...and she's 100% in remission.
This is fantastic news. Yeah!
-
DR Jose, your story was so sad. :(
-
YEAH VIXMOM!!!! WOO HOO!!!!
-
I am happy to say that I am home. It's not too bad out yet, lots of snow but the wind hasn't picked up too much yet but could reach 50 mph by tonight. All the schools in the area are now out - if they opened at all. The worst is supposed to hit this afternoon and tonight. My court for tomorrow has already been cancelled.
I closed the office a little after 11:00 AM. We could have stayed longer, but I prefer to know that we both made it home safely than to risk it later. There are already reports of many car accidents.
I did bring home work and have already done a few things via cell and email, but I doubt I'll do much work. It's just nice to be home
-
elmore, was it Lila Davis? I think about her often and wonder how she's doing.
BK, I really cannot remember her last name, but that sounds right. I remember that she was petite, rather pretty, and had dark hair.
Red Press asked all about how you were doing and I told him of your betrayal and treatment of a former label. He was looking at "Christmas Mornings" and I think he was happy to know you were still keeping busy.
-
We had very high winds in the middle of the night, and our power was out for a few hours. Today I am cleaning up palm tree trash from my yard, which is interesting, because I don't have any palm trees.
-
DR MattH, I meant to tell you earlier that my old friend Larry Carpenter directed yesterday's episode of ONE LIFE TO LiVE. He did a great job with the Kyle-Fish romance.
-
We got some Broadway World coverage today:

A very happy birthday Bruce!
-
We're back up in the grosses for last week. FINIAN'S RAINBOW played at 65% capacity after doing 53% the week before. This is good news.
-
Hey, D
A very happy birthday Bruce!
Hey, DR divarobbie! I thought you might be at yesterday's sessions.
-
Hey, DR divarobbie! I thought you might be at yesterday's sessions.
No, I knew Avatar is a TINY studio and there would be no room for me, as much as I wanted to be there. There are just no LARGE studios left, sadly.
-
We are expecting HIGH winds tonight, but the snow should stay north of me.
-
Hey, elmore3003, is Josh that you talk about Josh Clayton? I adore him!
-
I was going to do a medley (with a very special arrangement) of the Birthday Song and the Beatles' "Birthday" but I 'm running late so I'll keep it simple:
Happy Birthday to BK
Happy Birthday to BK
Happy Birthday Dear Grand Pooh-bah
Happy Birthday to You
and Many More!
-
Cason/LACC/The Brain From Planet X my trifecta connection/link to BK
(Cason met Bruce when he did the anniversary gala at LACC and I really got to know him during all the Brain readings and shows -- and then DR Elmo got me to come to HHW after I met him at the Brain premiere at LACC -- and the rest is my E and T gratuitous lurking and posting history)
-
This is most encouraging because 2009 is a 4 year for MR BK ruled by Uranus.
Uranus ruling BK? Why I'm I not surprised ....
-
We had very high winds in the middle of the night, and our power was out for a few hours. Today I am cleaning up palm tree trash from my yard, which is interesting, because I don't have any palm trees.
DR Laura -- We had extremely high winds up here in the High Country, too. It was snowing like crazy early yesterday but became heavy rain all afternoon. Last night the power kept going out and coming back on -- then finally went out for good. Didn't came back on til about 7 am -- man, was it cold without heat!! Now it's beautiful out -- lots of sunshine and the couple of inches of snow are melting away ...
-
My usual MO -- E and T with a brief mini-frenzy but now I gotta scram. Doing costumes for our Family Theatre's Holiday Show and it's .... well, two words: 33 kids -- (with multiple changes!!). They go around the world for holiday customs so I've been knee deep in silk flowers, ribbon, and hot glue making headresses, hats, etc. trying to come up with stuff that will make them look like they're in a different country each time they go on. Hundreds of items and the logistics back stage are gonna be interesting when we start tech tomorrow. The most challenging show I've ever costumed ... Holy Moly!!
-
Hey, elmore3003, is Josh that you talk about Josh Clayton? I adore him!
Sure is! Joshie is the son I never had and I really love him. He is such a hoot to collaborate with on an arrangement.
-
AS THE WORLD TURNS will go off the air in September 2010.
They really can't imagine that it's much of a surprise. I'm sorry for the actors this will put out of work, but they have a few months to squirrel away some nuts for winter.
-
DR MattH, I meant to tell you earlier that my old friend Larry Carpenter directed yesterday's episode of ONE LIFE TO LiVE. He did a great job with the Kyle-Fish romance.
He sure did. I think this must be a first for this kind of male-male intimacy on television, and it was very erotic and engaging.
-
! ! ! ! ! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BK ! ! ! ! !
-
I thoroughly enjoyed last night's CASTLE episode with wonderful guest stars and an involving story.
-
Page Six Dance!!!
-
I had every intention of settling in with more PERRY MASON episodes this afternoon for my day off when there came a knock at the door, and there the UPS man was standing with the BIG box set of MEL BROOKS COLLECTION: nine films and an enclosed hardbound book about his career with these nine films and lots of color stills from the movies.
-
So, I began with the first disc in the set - THE TWELVE CHAIRS. The film has NEVER looked this good. Except for a few dust specks a random small scratch or piece of debris, it's a beautiful transfer. The repurposed DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack clearly betrays that the film wasn't released this way with the music seeming to be set apart from the rest of the music, but that John Morris score is delightful.
Love Ron Moody in this movie though Dom DeLuise is as tiresome as usual with his stock overacted routine.
-
The only bonus on this disc is a trailer gallery for six of the nine movies.
Up tonight: BLAZING SADDLES (which I've already seen on Blu-ray when I first got my PS3, but I haven't watched it in a couple of years, so I'll have to watch it again and go through all the bonuses on the disc.
-
* * * * * Wonderful news about DR Vixmom! * * * * *
-
And Congrats to DR Penny-O on her story publication!
-
DR Elmore--regarding the lack of seating space, I don't understand why you didn't make the obvious choice and sit on Cheyenne's lap.
-
Sure is! Joshie is the son I never had and I really love him. He is such a hoot to collaborate with on an arrangement.
LOVE him. Ever since the concert of The Secret Garden... He is the musical director for my album!
-
I'm hopping off-line to get some writing done and then I'll head downstairs to continue the Mel Brooks parade with BLAZING SADDLES on Blu-ray (natch!)
WBBL.
-
Congrats to PennyO
-
Ron P - Thanks for posting about vixmom

DR Elmore--regarding the lack of seating space, I don't understand why you didn't make the obvious choice and sit on Cheyenne's lap.
DR Dan(the Man), that's a comment I would expect from our DR TCB! It may be the fantasy of several on HHW but it isn't mine.
-

Our friend Joshie is a multi-talented young man. His orchestration for THE TOYMAKER at NYMF this year was quite amazing.

Oy! I was on the phone for over a half hour with various and sundried people at Sony in NYC trying to find a contact who handles their Sony Music BD review screeners. I have never been transferred to so many departments and/or mailboxes (which were all full, BTW, and unable to even take a message) in my life. Finally they put me through to HR in Sony Music (as opposed to the three other HR departments I had already spoken to in other divisions) and I got a very helpful young lady. She was helpful no doubt because she started working there yesterday, LOL. But at least she took my info and promised to look into it and get back to me. I can't believe it's this labyrinthine. Universal Music has one PR contact who sends out all the screeners for Uni, Decca and DG. Is Sony that much bigger?
-
Sorry to be late to the partay--busy day, busy week.
A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MR BK!
May you have a lovely day!
-
I will have to return later to read the posts, but I will remind Vixmom that my car repair bill a few weeks ago was $4500! And I was just taking it in for a tune-up--I wasn't having any problems with it. (Yes, I SHOULD have gotten a second opinion!)
-
This is how my neighbor got home tonight. I was actually relieved to see it, the road grader would never have gotten through with her car stuck on the corner in front of my house

The DH is in the shower, giving DD Zach a much-needed bath. So I thought I'd check in on things here at HHW.
-
Back from a really nice lunch at the Hamburger Hamlet. Stopped at Gelson's and got my beloved Parisian Cake for later. Picked up a few packages, including a nice gift from our very own elmore. Am now in - quite chilly out, but clear blue skies. I also found out that Stranger/Tamiko is not going to make it tomorrow - it will be here Thursday morning first thing - so, thankfully Cason is available to come help, because I did NOT want to do all this shipping alone.
-
because I did NOT want to do all this shipping alone.
He doesn't VANT to be alone...
-
I love watching the closings posted on the TV....Ike's Bingo Parlor is closed tonight....how will I live ;)

Oh i love it, there's a place called 5678 Dance Studio....it's closed too

DR divarobbie - is there a projected completion date for your album?

Good Evening!
Greetings from the new UWS Apple Store!

And, yes, I did end up back at The Palace this afternoon for the Gypsy of the Year presentation...
-Bernadette Peters made an appearance.
-Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig made an appearance.
-And A Steady Rain raised a truly record-breaking $1.5+ MILLION for BC/EFA!!! -And they did it only 48 performances!!!
:) :) :)
-
And I was thinking/planning of going to the New York Philharmonic tonight, but then I got a call from a friend who had an extra ticket to Dreamgirls tonight, so... I'll be heading to Apollo in a couple of minutes!!
:)
-
And that really is wonderful news about DR vixmom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Oh...
When I headed to the subterranean level here at the Apple Store, I bumped into James Lapine. -I don't think he remembers who I am/was, but I'll never forget the story that he and Mr. Sondheim told about the creation of Sunday when they came to rehearsals for the production at Arena back in 1997. ;D
-
DR Cillaliz - Stay warm. Stay safe.

DR PennyO - Mazel!

That's really good news, especially when you look at some of the shows that had a drop in business - and average ticket price - last week.
:)

I'm sure. Hope you can pick up some money-saving tips from Donna Lynne~!!
I think my neighbors would get PISSED if I was belting in MY bathroom!

I have it, but haven't opened it yet.

Mine too. I love her so much, I'm using my 100th post on this here site to rave about her!

DR Cillaliz - Stay warm. Stay safe.
Thanks DR Jose. I'm home and not going anywhere. They've upped the predictions to 10.5 inches of snow and 35-50 mph winds all night. I already called Edith and told her not to bother going in tomorrow morning. Even the federal building is closed until noon and they NEVER close.
-
My mother, on the other hand, was out all afternoon playing bridge and drinking wine. Good grief, she's always paranoid about the weather, but she couldn't miss bridge. She made it home, much to my relief. So, I think everyone is accounted for

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRUCE!
TOD: I think I saw a link to HHW on allthatchat and realized that Bruce was the producer of Brent's two CDs and almost all the other ones he appears on.
-
Thanks, DR elmore for your report on the Finian's recording! I can't wait for the CD to come out!
I'm going to be in NYC this weekend to see Brent B at Birdland and am thinking of seeing Finian's again. I think it's one of my favorite shows now.
-
I've been on the phone with the Kritzerland web host trying to figure out what the HELL is going on. After getting nowhere other than "they're working on it" and no ETA or even what the problem is, I asked for a supervisor - I'm on hold now while he tries to find out what's going on. They say would could migrate to a different set of servers until the problem is fixed but that means the site could be down for 24 to 72 hours and obviously we're not doing that.
-
After I wrap this up, that's it for the day and I shall break open the cake box and eat some CAKE and figure out which motion picture I feel like watching this very evening.

Did you get your birthday package?

Thanks, George.

How can we have eleven users on and have no postings? A riddle inside a conundrum.
-
Well, no one can say we didn't get to page eight. And I spy a vixmon, and am, like everyone else, thrilled with her news.
-
In today's mail, a reason for me to say a hearty Thank You to DR George. :) :)
-
If DR vixmom is here, does that mean she didn't work a 16 hour day today??
-
My mother has fallen in love with the studio apartment they have available for her at her retirement complex. It has a veranda and a decorative (non-working) fireplace. She will probably move shortly after the first of the year.

I was just booted by a SFM error

Hope you enjoy it! ;)

Thanks to Ron for posting my news - I had to ask permission to go to non-buisness site and it was just easier to say "Facebook" than to try to explain HHW . I hoped one of you would find the news and post here

You're happy that Vixmom was booted by an SFM (or SMF) error??

TOD - I wandered in here entirely by accident and heard of Mr. Kimmel for the first time on this here site. Of course once I saw some of BK's early photos I realized I had been familar with his work since I was a kid - (I remember that bank teller in the APPLE DUMPLING GANG!)

Which came first, The Partridges or The First Nudie Musical?
I remember Bruce as Laurie's date on the former, but, I distinctly became aware of Bruce with THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL on its first run.
The first time I spoke to Bruce Kimmel, I was planning a charity revue of songs from flop musicals and his UNSUNG MUSICALS had just been released. I phoned the offices at Varese Sarabande, and a certain Esther Monk connected me to Bruce. My query then was whether or not I could use the title "Unsung Musicals" for my revue, to which BK responded in the affirmative. At the time, I knew that BK had recently seen PASSION in previews in NYC and we talked about that show also, BK's opinion was NOT positive.
I had to wait several years to meet BK in person, though. I finally caught up with him at Joe Allen's the weekend of Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner's concert at Town Hall. Bruce made that entire weekend a delight - from the dinner and dish at Joe Allen's to the backstage of Town Hall to the post-concert party at Cafe Un, Deux, Trois, Bruce was a delightful host and even then felt like an old friend.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRUCE!
And thank you for all the wonderful musical and non-musical memories!
May they continue for sixty-something more years!

Need to get ready to go to the Studio City meeting, and my feeling has always been that when there's money in a neighborhood, crime follows. Studio City has always been upper middle class ( I've been here since 1965, although I'm at the poor end) but it was always more subdued. Now it's all hip and swanky. That brings crime. The same thing happened along Hollywood Blvd., during the 5 years we lived there.
Time to move to a poorer neighborhood.

thank you, and again i'm very happy for your news.

Sam is right about the City of Studio. It's always been a fairly quiet, small neighborhood with quaint rather than large houses. Then these entitled TV and movie people took it over as theirs, buying quaint charming homes and ripping them down and putting up awful, faceless, and disgusting houses that ruined the face of this once charming nabe. It should not have been allowed, frankly, but there's no way to stop it, unfortunately. And yes, when you bring that kind of thing into a nabe then crime follows. I think that's why we've been having the nightly dance of the police helicopters. Of course, I hope they catch the people perpetrating the crimes and I hope they off them on the spot for making people's lives miserable, especially during the holiday season. It's truly disgusting. But the oafs have themselves to blame. Why couldn't they stay in Sherman Oaks or Encino, where the houses ARE big and stately and, you know, even original to the neighborhood.

That could be me in say fifty years.
Ha! It could be me fifty minutes ago.

I had an enjoyable revisit with BLAZING SADDLES. The Blu-ray looks OK, but not as good as THE TWELVE CHAIRS looked. It only has a Dolby Digital 5.1 track (no mono; no lossless).
Madeline Kahn is simply stupendous in the film, and Gene Wilder and Clevon Little make a great team.
-
I watched all of the bonus features on the BLAZING SADDLES disc. Mel talked for about 50 minutes for his commentary. A making-of feaurette had those in the cast who are still with us along with select members of the crew. There's a couple of minutes of tribute to Madeline Kahn's work in the movie excerpted from a Lifetime special on her.
The "Black Bart" TV pilot with Lou Gossett was simply awful. No wonder it didn't sell.

Then I watched tonight's episode of BETTER OFF TED. Had some funny stuff with the nerds and Ted pretending to be an Indian. Doesn't have nearly the laughs that MODERN FAMILY has, but I'm glad it's back on the schedule.

Good Evening!
I'm back from The World Famous Apollo Theater, and... Well...
I liked Dreamgirls. But I wish I had liked it more. It's a very good production, but I just felt it seemed a bit too by the numbers. The book of Dreamgirls has never been it's strongest point, and I don't think making "Listen" (from the movie of "Dreamgirls") into a "plot point" really worked. It was just a lot of (new) words. A lot.
Part of the core of Dreamgirls is the friction between "true talent" and "manufactured and manipulated fame", and I felt the overall slickness of the production muted the heart and soul of the show. Yes, the LED walls which serve as the "set" are quite impressive. In fact, I'd have to say it's one of the best uses of technology I've seen on a stage in a long time: the opening ten seconds of the show actually gave me goosebumps right off the bat. It's quite a simple "light show", but it packs a good "Wow!". However, I then found myself wondering just how and where the walls would be used next. The technology quickly became distracting especially with some of the more "choreographed" sequences - I could tell that the "click track" had kicked in. The same thing happened with the multiple quick-change costume sequences. I could sense that they were being set up; they did not come as a surprise to me.
During intermission, I found myself trying to be as enthusiastic as my friend, Jason, who offered me the ticket. And after the show, I'm guessing my very level-headed reaction to the show may have been a bit too evident too, but... Ah, well...
There were also a number of sound issues tonight too: some low-level feedback every now and then, and some very noticeable "his/her mic is not up" moments too. I also found the balance between the band and the singers to favor the band - which, in this show, is saying something. Alas, with the way the band is set up, it's all piped in. It's always a bit disheartening when you can't hear the trumpets acoustically. Anyway...
I'm glad I go the chance to see the show. Jason was given the tickets by a friend of his who wasn't able to use them tonight, and we ended up in the Orchestra, Fifth Row Center, On The Aisle. Great seats. Ideal seats. *The four seats next to us actually remained empty. I'm guessing there were premium seats that weren't sold. It is a good show. There are some great voices. There are some good moments.
And I'll stop rambling and reviewing now. But...
-
RANT AHEAD!
There was NO acknowledgment or bow for the band during the curtain call!?!?!?!?!? WTF?!?!?!? Yes, for the most part, the band is offstage, but there are a couple of times where the "core band" is revealed on stage. The audience knows there are real people "back there".
And the cast is given quite a generous curtain call! Ensemble bow followed by individual bows. Then once the Bow Music stops, the leads take another set of individual bows. Then another group bow. -That's when I thought the would acknowledge the pit.... Well... The band started the playout music, the cast started waving goodbye and walking off-stage, and the house lights came up.
That oversight(?) actually ruined the whole evening for me. I'm actually still a little pissed about it. I did happen to run into the conductor after the show, and my only question to him was, "Where was the band bow?". He didn't know where it was either.
There is a LOT of Music in Dreamgirls. I'd have to say it rivals Sweeney Todd in the brevity and scarcity of "book only, dialogue only" scenes. The music is non-stop for the first 20 minutes of the show!!! The least the director and producers could have done is to provide a simple "Vanna" to the band!
END OF RANT. -If that was a rant?
OY!

In other news...
Here are the details about the record-breaking fund-raising totals for this year's Gypsy of the Year courtesy of Playbill.com:
Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig made a unique place for themselves in the history of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS fundraising Dec. 8, when it was announced that they had raised $1,549,953 in the 21st annual Gypsy of the Year competition in six weeks of curtain appeals at their hit Broadway drama, A Steady Rain.
The figure is not only the most ever collected by a single show in the history of BC/EFA fundraisers, but totaled more than was raised in entire Broadway-wide Gypsy of the Year events in any of its first nine years. To a standing ovation, Jackman thanked "all [the people] we bullied, cajoled and slept with" to collect the money.
The Steady Rain bonanza boosted the 2009 Gypsy of the Year total to a record $4,630,695, far outdistancing the previous record of $3,927,000 set in pre-Recession 2007.

Finished with my viewing, and dear reader Sam just stopped by and brought me a nice birthday balloon and some gummy candies - very sweet.

I have no interest in any production of Dreamgirls where anyone on the creative team would think it was a good idea to add Listen to the show - it was awful in the movie and I have no doubt would be even worse in the show. And then I saw Mr. Longbottom's "staging" of Steppin' To The Bad Side and it was horrible, especially when compared to Mr. Bennett and Mr. Peters' original staging, which was one of the greatest musical numbers I've ever seen on the stage. Both can be viewed on YouTube.

This has been one of the oddest birthdays I've ever had, and yet, oddly enough, I really liked it. Very few people called (my daughter being one of the few), but I got an amazing number of wishes on Facebook from really nice people who said really nice things, and seeing what they wrote made me think that I might have done and am doing something worthwhile in life. And that automatically makes it an aces birthday.

I'm wondering if there's already a YouTube of the new "Listen" somewhere. It really is quite awful, imho. Of course, there were hoots and hollers from the audience, but I guess they were paying more attention to the vocal pyrotechnics going on, rather than the clumsy and forced lyrics. At least in the movie, "Listen" was a "pop song". In this new version of Dreamgirls, it's been re-fashioned as a duet where 1) Deena asks for forgiveness from Effie, 2) Effie tells Deena that she should have never hooked up with Curtis in the first place, 3) Effie tells Deena that she survived by listening to her inner-self, 4) Effie tells Deena that she sold out by not listening to her own inner-voice, 5) Effie tells Deena that she needs to leave Curtis ASAP, 6) Deena agrees with Effie, and 6) Effie and Deena reconcile with each other. Like I said earlier: a lot of words. A lot.
As for the staging... I've liked Shane Sparks' choreography on "So You Think You Can Dance?" and elsewhere, but I felt he relied too much on "step routines" throughout the show - at least when he had to choreograph the men's ensemble. However, I didn't find anything all that new and innovative in the staging, in general. The spirit of Michael Bennet seems to have supervised the production. Even the LED walls just seemed like an updated version of the original Periaktoi (towers).
-
OH!!!!!
There was also one truly LOL moment for me during the closing moments of the show...
As the Dreams begin to sing their penultimate number, "Hard to Say Goodbye", the walls part, and the band platform moves downstage. The core, "live" band is on the center platform, and flanking them on either side is the ensemble... Fake-playing instruments. The men are holding the horns. The women are holding violins. WHY?!?!? -Especially when the cool string "noodles" were cut. ???
*But maybe the producers thought that that moment would substitute for the band bow? :-\
-

I wish I was. When I saw the placement of the song, I could tell it had been set up to be a joint 11:00 number. However, what I was not expecting was the amount of plot that put onto the song. I knew that a new lyric had been written, but I didn't realize it was going to serve as dialogue too. It would have worked so much better if had been more confrontational - "Listen.. No... Listen to me!", or if it had just been kept as a solo number. Or if it had just been not included at all. -I mean, it can't even be used as an audition song in its current state. Just too much information.
