Laura DR - my theory on the Handel mishap: Some organs, even real pipe organs [and not those electronic "appliances"] have a transposing dial. Purists consider this "cheating." In any case, my theory is that as the organist was adjusting the registration in that final moment before the final 'Hallelujah' cadence, he/she accidentally hit the transposing control dial. Why they didn't realize what had happened and correct the error until the final seconds is anyone's guess.

My favorite song from Hollywood is "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and there are two versions.
While looking up the original sadder/depressing lyrics
I found out a couple of interesting things;
There is Garland's original version and it was revised for Frank Sinatra in 1957.
BTW BK recorded the song twice with the original lyrics and on Guy Haines' version he reprised the last verse with the alternate lyric line
Although it is credited to Hugh Martin & Ralph Blane it was actually written by just Martin
Here are the original lyrics
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last,
Next year we may all be living in the past
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, pop that champagne cork,
Next year we will all be living in New York.
No good times like the olden days, happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who were dear to us, will be near to us no more.
But at least we all will be together, if the Fates allow,
From now on we'll have to muddle through somehow.
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now
I wonder if anyone ever recorded these lyrics?
JUDY GARLAND VERSION
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
Next year all our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yuletide gay
Next year all our troubles will be miles away
Once again as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who were dear to us
Will be near to us once more
Someday soon we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now
FRANK SINATRA VERSION
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
From now on, our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yuletide gay
From now on, our troubles will be miles away
Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now

All last week the song, "It's a Jolly Holiday with Mary" was going through my head. I'm trying to figure out if that meant Mary Poppins or the Virgin Mary. I don't think of the Virgin Mary as being particularly jolly. Is anyone in the Bible jolly?
-
Happy happy birthday to Dear William F Orr

And likewise a happy birthday to BK's brother!

Happy Birthday, William F. Orr!
Happy Birthday, Brother Joel.

Today is a glorious day. I received an email from Western Union that tells me that United Nations representative John Booma will be sending me $5000 per day until a total of $1.2 million has been placed in my account.
Of course I will be the same simple person I am today - just much richer and no one will be able to talk to me because my email and telephone number and address will all be changed.
-
My guess is that unless the Human H1N1 is banned by IP number, she will be back under another alias.

We have been have computer issues at home so- I am sneaking in here from the office

Good morning, all! I slept late this morning, which was not a bad thing and around 11 pm I shall head to the NYPL for a bit. This will be followed by a trip to midtown to drop off some things for the cast of FINIAN'S RAINBOW and conductor.
Joshie's conducting the show has been moved from this afternoon to next Wednesday matinee so I won't watch the show today. I'll be there next week to cheer him on.
Now for a few chores and some work on GENTLEMEN BE SEATED.

I wonder if anyone ever recorded these lyrics?
I very much doubt it since it was never published or commercially available with these lyrics. I never knew them.
When I arranged the song in 1984 for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, I used the "muddle through" lyrics because I felt they best expressed the Chorus' predicament at the time with members and friends sick and dying - my memory of 1983 through the mid 1990's is a memorial service at least once a week and continuous phone calls about who was recently diagnosed, hospitalized or leaving town to die with family - and I was persuaded by Chorus members to change the final section to "hang a shining star" because they found the sentiment too bleak at the time.
-
And one for BK's brother Joel!
And DR ArnoldBrockman's son!!
-
Good morning!
It seemed very cold this morning, but part of my daze could have been due to a lack of sleep. I never sleep well when I've had a heavy dinner during the evening, and last night was no exception. Still, I did my walk and the rest of the my workout this morning and am glad they're finished for the day.
-
I hope William Orr has a very merry birthday.
-
I'm sure he's mentioned him before, but I honestly did not know/remember that bk even had a brother, much less than his name was Joel.
I hope he has a happy day.
-
And the word of the day is: CLINQUANT!
And The Song Of The Day Is: GOLDEN EARRINGS
-
I reviewed IRON MONKEY a few months back, but I reviewed four of those martial arts movies in a row, and honestly, I can't remember one from the other now.
-
I hope your son has a wonderful birthday, DR Arnold!
-
I'll be working on 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU on Blu-ray today. Other than 8 1/2, it's my last review disc in the pile unless something else comes today. If nothing comes, I'll take the rest of the holiday off after today, and start on 8 1/2 on Sunday.
-
A very very happy birthday to the DS of DR Arnold M Brockman!!!! :D
-
I wanted to mention something that has bothered me for a couple of days. I recently finished that wonderful book on LADY IN THE DARK. Naturally, in one of the chapters the subject of STAR! comes up.
The author of the book asserts that STAR! was the biggest financial Hollywood flop until HEAVEN'S GATE came along. I think he's wrong about that. True, STAR! cost $12 million and its rentals were $4.2 million. But weren't movies like PAINT YOUR WAGON, LOST HORIZON, SWEET CHARITY, and TORA! TORA! TORA! much more notorious money losers?
-
And yes Happy Birthday to Craig Brockman son of DR ARNOLD BROCKMAN.

I loved this movie; it's based on THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, and very funny. Not as good as CLUELESS, perhaps, but the play transfers well to a high school settng.
-
DR MATTH - I think you are correct money wise about STAR! - but maybe the author had an ax to grind or a point to make.
-
DR DAW - yes my squirrels got unshelled peanuts - the expensive kind.
-
DR MATTH - I think you are correct money wise about STAR! - but maybe the author had an ax to grind or a point to make.
Well, I enjoyed his insightful critique of the film. He makes some comparisons that I had never considered and makes believable arguments for them. It's just that factual data that bothered me. If he got that info from the imdb, well, we know how inaccurate it can be.

There is another error in the book concerning Kurt Weill's use of the rhumba rhythm but the author, bruce mcclung, got that information from Richard Traubner's operetta history. I suspect that's how he got this info wrong as well: he found it in another book. We talked about the rhumba assertion's being incorrect in Traubner, and I think he will revise the information in the preface to the new KWF edition of the score. The book on LADY IN THE DARK is based on his doctoral thesis and the new edition of the score he's preparing for the Kurt Weill Foundation. bruce is a good sport and I'm very fnd of him.
-
I just remembered another review set that's coming in, maybe today: THE ADVENTURES OF MIGHTY MOUSE. These are not the original cartoons many of us grew up with. I believe this is a new series of adventures of fairly recent vintage. I'll find out when the set arrives.

Well, please pass along whenever you can that I greatly enjoyed the book. I thought that opening chapter was among the best things I've ever read putting me RIGHT in the Alvin Theater during opening night.
Poor old STAR! has enough strikes against it without others perpetuating its place in the history of Hollywood money losers.

I'm finishing up at the computer now and ready to head downstairs to watch some leisure TV, fix some lunch, and then get started on today's work project.

We went to the grocery when it opened at 8:00AM. The lines were amazing for that time. My mom now has 4 or 5 gallons of milk for the 3 of us. I think that will be enough LOL

Marys have had a not so jolly romp through history:
England’s Queen Mary - was a bloody terror
Mary Deare was never jolly, she was always a wreck
Mary Stuart – lost her not-so jolly head
Mary Mallon – spreading Tyhoid everywhere

Eta on the storm is 3:00 PM. I don't think I've heard this much hype and serious warning about a winter storm in years. It will be interesting

And HHW Birthday Greetings to bk's brother, Joel!!!
-
Today is the day my family will have celebration number 1 of Christmas. We shall meet at sister Sue's for dinner and then cross the street to niece Katie's for the opening of presents.
Due to the fact that various and sundried will be having celebrations at in-laws homes, etc. many of our group will be having Christmas time in other places on other days.
-
In other news...
Instead of dealing with a six to seven hours bus ride down to Richmond later this afternoon, I've just decided to head down to DC tomorrow morning. Whew! Then I'll head down to Richmond on Christmas day with my brothers and the grandkids/nephew/nieces.
-
Today is also the day that I will get the results of Dog Bosco's blood work. It will be either good news (in that his condition is treatable) or bad news (in that his condition is severe).
I am hoping for good news, as I would like to have my best buddy around for a few more years :)
But regardless of how it goes, Bosco wishes one and all a great holiday season!

ASK BK
Since you have recorded a couple of Christmas Albums (Broadway Christmas & Hollywood Christmas)
What is your favorite Christmas Song from each of the collections or a favorite that wasn't on the collections?
Well, with Brent's CD it's three Christmas albums plus the compilation best of we did at you know where. My favorite Christmas song period is Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and it's on both Broadway and Hollywood CDs, and I like both versions - Liz Callaway and Guy Haines. I also really like Brent's Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire).
-
And A Big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Truant but Loveable Son CRAIG-40 Years Old Today.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR DEAR SON CRAIG!
-
I'm finding it hard to believe that dear son Craig is not on our birthday calendar or I most certainly would have included him in the notes. In any case, a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to Craig Brockman.

Oh, and I'm up. I got up at nine, but I went back to sleep for another hour, which was good.

If any banned member comes back it's easy to figure out and easy to do something about. And it was hard to tell, but I think when you do a full ban that it does do it by IP. If not, that's certainly easy to go back and fix.

Typically organ scores simply tell you which manual (great, swell, etc.) to play whatever part on. Any manual can employ either/both staves.

Nobody could do it like Ethel Smith! Even as she got older, no one had faster or more accurate fingering!

Vixmom, your card came today and I must say the Vixter is one gorgeous young lady!

Unless that was Vixdad of course. ;)

I have had a good day, given my anxiety about "rheumatoid disorders," and I've finished up my Christmas demands. I got to the theatre and left my gifts for the cast, conductor and other friends, caught the bus up to Lincoln Center NYPL for another biography search. On my way home I stopped at the market for a few staples. I am surprised that my final check for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA has not shown up by now.
-
I also stopped at the concession stand on my way out of the theatre and picked up a FINIAN'S RAINBOW mug. It's quite festive.
-
I am reading Meredith Willson's book about THE MUSIC MAN recommended here by DR MATTH a few weeks ago when it was ON SALE at Amazon.com! Very funny.
I'm starting it tonight. Looking forward to it.
-
I began my day's viewing with another episode of THE MENTALIST. This was the one with a parachute jumper who fell to his death. This was one of the easier ones to solve, but it's always a pleasure seeing Patrick work.
-
Then I watched Monday night's CASTLE rerun. This was the Halloween episode with the death of a "vampire" and his boy friend a "werewolf," one of the more poignant CASTLE episodes. Very enjoyable.
-
Then I watched today's work project - 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. It took a while to win me over, but by the time Heath Ledger did his song and dance to "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," I was hooked and ended up deeply enjoying the film. I also though David Krumholtz, an actor I'm not always so high on, stole every scene in the early going, so much so that I kept wishing he were the star at first instead of a supporting character.
-
Listened to about 45-50 minutes of the commentary done by the two writers and four of the actors 10 years after the filming. Of course, they can't help going back to talk about Heath Ledger though they also share lots of stories about their activities during the making of the movie. Not a lot about making the movie itself, however.
-
Since the gag reel was used over the closing credits of the movie, the only bonus feature apart from the commentary was a 35-minute making-of featurette. It mixed observations by the writers and the director filmed recently mixed in with on-set interviews done 10 years ago. They also show some deleted scenes during this featurette rather than having them as a separate section.
-
I had time to skim through today's ATWT and OLTL. Nothing of importance on either show. Nothing of interest in the ATWT previews either.
-
My 5 for $55 Warner Archive delivery came late this afternoon. I may put one of these on tonight or find something else to watch, perhaps one of my Blu-ray CHristmas presents. I haven't decided yet.
-
Thanks DR JANE - those boys look so much alike.......
-
So DR JMK - each keyboard is called a manual?

I have loved this book since I found it in my hometown library in 1962 or so. In 1991 or so, when I was back visiting family, I checked the library and found the book still on the shelf; it had not been checked out since 1964! So, i had a friend of mine check it out for the first time in nearly 30 years, send it to me, and declare it lost. I paid the library for the book and I'm very happy to have it.

Congrats to all. Vibes to all. Happy Birthday to all. We're a little obesessed with the upcoming storm. I baked two kinds of cookies today. Waiting for DR Samantha to stop over. she doesn't realize how ba the weather is going to get. They are now saying that with the snow on the ground already and the additional snow expected, there will be 2-3 feet on the ground and drifts could be as high as the roofs of some houses. We have been waiting for my neighbors kids to make it here from Davenport and Duluth. They both just arrived a little while ago. Susan had to drive 20 mph the last 30 miles, but they are here and safe. We are relieved.

A poster on AllThatChat who saw the new Sherlock Holmes film with Robert Downey Jr says it's not Sherlock Holmes and maybe "Indiana Holmes" would have been a better title.
-
I took some before pictures a little while ago. There is about 10 inches of snow on the ground before the storm. I"ll post photos as the snow and ice pile up

Seeing the TV spots also gave me that impression. I'm sure I'll eventually see it, but I won't go to the theater for it. Paycable would seem to be where I will catch up to it.
-
I guess I need to hop off and get some writing done. Then I can head down and have the evening to myself for fun, leisure viewing.

My mom, my Aunt Doris, cousin Debra and I drove to Greenville SC yesterday morning...left around 7:30 a.m.
Had a good day, overall. Did some shopping, had lunch with my cousin Ashley (who lives in nearby Simpsonville with hubby David and 20-month-old son William Anderson) and continued shopping.
Lots of things are hinky this year...hinkier than usual. Let us say that the events of Thanksgiving one year ago led to an ugly scene that saw one of my cousins jailed. He recently got out.
He will not be welcome at my aunt's house Christmas night for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is another cousin who wants to do him bodily harm.
It's all too, too, terribly twisted-and-turned to try to think through...but there it is.
Sigh.
We're going to church tonight for a candlelight service, after which we will drive through this and another town to view the Christmas lights.
-
I have, courtesy of my mom and aunt, discovered the sheer rapture of the GPS system.
They have a Garmin Nuvi...basic model...and it absolutely made yesterday's (and the day's before) trip simple and fun and easy-peasy. Not that we didn't know where we were going, but we found shorter, faster routes to places we had hitherto only known one way to get to.
I am getting a Magellan for Christmas as a result!
-
Seeing the TV spots also gave me that impression.
Me, too. I'll pass. :P
I will not, on the principle of not wishing to be bored to tears, see any movie in which Robert Downey Jr. appears.

~~~DON'T-BUST-A-GUT VIBES~~~
TO DR RON PULLIAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
I have no intention of busting a gut, as you so colorfully put it.
Why....I'd sooner die than "bust a gut."
Come to think of it, I "would" die if I busted a gut.
The narcissistic idiots behind the balloon hoax are going to jail? Can this good news be true?
-
I caught part of a Sonja Henie film on Fox Movie Channel yesterday...or was it the day before?
It starred, in addition to Ms. Henie, a young, dashing Don Ameche and a young, dashing Cesar Romero. It was handsomely produced, quick and witty, and featured one Miss Ethel Merman.
Damn! I wish Fox would issue more of its older movies in some way or other, even if it's along the lines of the Warner Archives issues. I would love to have those Henie films, plus the other movies that Ameche and Romero made.
-
The narcissistic idiots behind the balloon hoax are going to jail? Can this good news be true?
90 days for him, 20 days for her. It's way too good for them, but there are the kids to consider. They are, however, legally prevented from capitalizing/cashing-in on their misadventure.
-
I took some before pictures a little while ago. There is about 10 inches of snow on the ground before the storm. I"ll post photos as the snow and ice pile up
The Weather Channel says it's going to be gruesome. Don't go outside without boots and lots of layers. Stay warm. Keep safe.
-
I don't think of the Virgin Mary as being particularly jolly. Is anyone in the Bible jolly?
Not unless Old King Cole received a mention. Or...that "jolly old elf" known as Saint Nick. Doubtful, though.
-
And the word of the day is: CLINQUANT!
Matt: "This clinquant is too ripe."
Luisa: "Sorry!"
Hello everyone!
Happy Birthday to DR William F. Orr.
Happy Birthday to BK's DB Joel.
DR JRand: Some days ago, you posted a query as to whether Leroy Prinz's "Boar's Tooth Ceremonial" dance was shown in the road show version of "South Pacific."
It absolutely was...the entire Bali Hai sequence with Walston and Kerry visting the island during a festival is restored on the road show version (both DVD and Blu-ray)/
The original lyrics for Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas are certainly very moross.
I join other DRs with this being my favorite Christmas song.
-
Happy Birthday to DS Craig.
-
I want to know what DR Ron Pulliam has had to eat recently.
-
I suppose since she announced it on Facebook, it's not a secret that DS Rob's girlfriend has been appointed as adjunct professor of dance at a community college :D
Congratulations! That's very happy news.
-
I also stopped at the concession stand on my way out of the theatre and picked up a FINIAN'S RAINBOW mug. It's quite festive.
a newish member of my book group called last night to check up on me. she was very excited about the birthday present she is giving herself, which includes time in ny. she has tickets to see only one show, guess which one she picked to see ;)
she promised to bring me back the playbill
-
Back from a few errands and whatnot and I've cleaned the den and most of the dining room, so I'm in good shape. I've given my second set of notes on the revised pages, and also done some more notes on the new book. I do believe that means I'm done for the day. I'm staying put - the streets are too nutty.
-
In other news...
Instead of dealing with a six to seven hours bus ride down to Richmond later this afternoon, I've just decided to head down to DC tomorrow morning. Whew! Then I'll head down to Richmond on Christmas day with my brothers and the grandkids/nephew/nieces.
Safe travel vibes for DR Jose. It is so nice that you get to spend so much time with your family. Happy Holidays to all of you.
Today is also the day that I will get the results of Dog Bosco's blood work. It will be either good news (in that his condition is treatable) or bad news (in that his condition is severe).
I am hoping for good news, as I would like to have my best buddy around for a few more years :)
But regardless of how it goes, Bosco wishes one and all a great holiday season!
I am reading Meredith Willson's book about THE MUSIC MAN recommended here by DR MATTH a few weeks ago when it was ON SALE at Amazon.com! Very funny.
I'm starting it tonight. Looking forward to it.
I have loved this book since I found it in my hometown library in 1962 or so. In 1991 or so, when I was back visiting family, I checked the library and found the book still on the shelf; it had not been checked out since 1964! So, i had a friend of mine check it out for the first time in nearly 30 years, send it to me, and declare it lost. I paid the library for the book and I'm very happy to have it.
When I was going to Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, the public library actually had signs up saying that doing this was a misdemeanor. ::)
I don't doubt that people everywhere do this all the time, but that was the first (and so far only) time that I'd heard about any library system criminalizing the practice.
Hello, everyone.
I brought a lot of work with me to this manse and have been a good girl and am slowly getting it done. So I am only now getting to my email and HHW.
I'm expecting an online dealer, somewhere around five, which probably means he'll get here around six-thirty. I think I'll go watch a motion picture on Blu and Ray in the meantime - or, in the meantime I think I'll go watch a motion picture on blu and ray. I am happy to hear you say that, BK. I read about THE MONSTER SQUAD in Rue Morgue Magazine and promptly bought the dvd. One week later, I traded it in. . .I made it the whole way through, but, didn't think it held a candle to ABBOT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. . .or any number of horror-comedy hybrids.
Then I watched today's work project - 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. It took a while to win me over, but by the time Heath Ledger did his song and dance to "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," I was hooked and ended up deeply enjoying the film. I also though David Krumholtz, an actor I'm not always so high on, stole every scene in the early going, so much so that I kept wishing he were the star at first instead of a supporting character.
Matt H., I am glad you enjoyed 10 THINGS. We are very fond of that movie, becuase most of it was filmed here in Tacoma. Padua High School is actually Stadium High School, and it is a couple of miles from my house. I attended many summer school classes at Stadium, and I did a show in their old theater.
-
I'll bet you put on quite a show, DR TCB. ;)
-
Good Evening!
Well... After I put the last load of laundry in the dryer earlier, I headed out of the apartment... Down to 7th Ave... And over to the Ziegfeld for the 4:30 showing of "Nine".
I liked it.
Is it perfect? No. Enjoyable? Yes. Do the new songs really do anything other than add about 10 minutes that that movie did not need? Well... Yes. ;)
There are some very nice moments throughout, and I really liked how Rob Marshall more or less retained the "Overture" from the original stage version. I did sorely miss "The Bells of St. Sebastian" and "Growing Tall", but, well... I wasn't the director, nor the producer.
On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give it a very solid 7. *And I can tell one's impression of the movie is going to be highly affected by just how familiar one is with the original stage version and the original movie of "8-1/2". With the stage musical being realized on film, the specter of Fellini can't help but hover in one's mind.
-
So... Has anyone listened to the soundtrack from Nine, yet?
Ummmmm. . .yes. . .Nicole Kidman STILL CAN'T SING!
Well, some would say the same thing about Karen Akers... and Andrea Marcovicci... And... <meow>
Sadly, the way that "Unusual Way" is sliced and diced up in the movie... Well... See for yourself. Or not.
-
Isn't "Unusual Way" the only song NOT in the original key?
-
I do have to say that even Nicole Kidman admits that her singing 'talents' are quite limited, but, I don't even like her interpretation of "Unusual Way."
If the ice storm doesn't hit, I'll be seeing NINE on Christmas Day.
-
I will say that the one thing that did really bug me about "Nine" were the over-slick orchestrations. I missed Jonathan Tunick's very elegant work - especially the harpsichord! - and some of the new arrangements just really don't fit with the period setting of the movie.
*Oh, and I did get a kick out of how the ethnic origin of Guido's women were altered (from the stage version) according to the casting of the actress in each role. -Did they spend the whole budget for a dialect coach on Daniel Day-Lewis? ;) -Who actually does the Italiano thing very well.
-
now i must call the doctor's office and see if i can get a renewal on my pain meds. if not i'm in trouble.
I'll sell you some of mine.
It all depends on who's addressing me.
-
Isn't "Unusual Way" the only song NOT in the original key?
I think a couple of the other ones were altered too - like "Call from the Vatican".
*And in defense(?) of Ms. Kidman, as you stated, she has publicly admitted to her limited vocal talents. -Or however that is supposed to be grammatically phrased. She has also been very open about how they lowered the key for her in the interviews she's been doing for the movie.
-
If the ice storm doesn't hit, I'll be seeing NINE on Christmas Day.
My niece, my friend Margo and I are going to see this on Saturday. My niece has the soundtrack and I loaned her the 2-CD of the OBC. She didn't even want to listen to the OBC.
Kids. 8)
-
And now...
Well...
When I got home from the movie - after making a few stops to finish up my Christmas shopping - I went ahead and packed my bags to get ready to head down to Richmond tonight. I'm gonna hop on the "red-eye" Chinatown bus at 11:00. I think this will be much easier than waking up at 5:00am to get ready to hop on the 7:00am bus. So...
Thank You for the Travel Vibes!!
May I put in on the record again, I really like the new position at work and love being on the floor with the customers.
What I don't like is the amount of strangers who feel that they can invade my personal space and hug me once I've found what they were looking for. . .:(
Hmm, I guess I won't be shopping at your store!
I can't say any more at present but it will be a Big Event! And I will go into details later.
last night we finished watching LIFE ON MARS. a big thank you to all who recommended the show!
we have begun watching the british show DOC MARTIN. has any one watched it?
Jane, I watched DOC MARTIN just recently and really enjoyed it. It's a quirky show and won't be to everyone's taste. But I really liked it. There's something universal about Doc Martin (the character)--the "townie" who doesn't fit in. l like it on many levels.
Mercury is moving this evening and tomorrow - don't be limited by small thinking and give all suggestions consideration.
Another retrograde? Oy!
-
I completely missed DR Laura's question! I'm not notorious enough to be on Liza's guest list. You know how Liza does her guest list? She hangs up a copy of The National Enquirer and throws darts.
Richard and I went out to do the last-minute grocery shopping for Christmas - we got to Kroger just after 6pm and it was a ZOO! Everybody was in good spirits, though, and we finished our shopping and picked up a pizza for dinner. My last batch of caramel corn is in the oven.
Pop plain popcorn in microwave. Make syrup on stove top and pour over popped corn in a large roasting pan. Bake at 250o for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Break apart when cool. YUM!
-
Congrats to DR Ginny's son Rob's girlfriend!
Thank you, DR Jennifer. And DR George, too!
Then I watched today's work project - 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. It took a while to win me over, but by the time Heath Ledger did his song and dance to "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," I was hooked and ended up deeply enjoying the film. I also though David Krumholtz, an actor I'm not always so high on, stole every scene in the early going, so much so that I kept wishing he were the star at first instead of a supporting character.
Matt H., I am glad you enjoyed 10 THINGS. We are very fond of that movie, becuase most of it was filmed here in Tacoma. Padua High School is actually Stadium High School, and it is a couple of miles from my house. I attended many summer school classes at Stadium, and I did a show in their old theater.
That high school building was astonishingly beautiful. Even the actors in the commentary commented on how special the palce made them feel while filming there and all wished their high schools had been in a stately building like that.
Travel vibes for DR jose. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since my grocery store will be closed on Christmas Day (Friday, my usual shopping day), I'll be braving the store tomorrow. I kind of dread it, but I do need some items.
-
I had a very leisurely, wonderful evening of viewing tonight. Since last night's NCIS rerun was one of my favorite episodes from last season, I didn't record it but took out last season's box set and watched the Christmas-themed episode tonight.
-
I went ahead and watched two other NCIS episodes on the disc. One was the really intense one where McGee gets trapped in a women's prison when a riot breaks out.
I have a similar recipe. I forget what makes the "syrup". For some reason i think it's corn syrup and brown sugar?
It tastes really good.
Then I decided to finish up those interviews I had started watching on the BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL bonus features section. Lots of familiar stories but I enjoyed watching and listening to them again.
-
I just realized i had not been online all day. So i'm just now reading all 12 pages of todays posts!
-
Then I watched the other episode of the show on that disc, the one dealing with the 1943-60 period: the Golden Age of the American Musical.
-
My neighbors, directly across the street to the south are really annoying sort of young people. Today, they're "party" people set up their usual tent and tables and chairs. Yes, they hire people and have them bring tables and chairs, heaters and a big tent/cover thing. I have been living here for, what, six years - and they have ALWAYS had their Christmas party on the weekend before Christmas. This year it looks like they're doing it on Christmas Eve - yes, the same night as my annual, long-time, Christmas Eve Do. Which means parking is going to be horrendous. I gotta tell you.
-
DR Jennifer - the syrup for my caramel corn is 2 sticks of margarine, 2 cups of light brown sugar, 1/2 cup of light Karo syrup, and a teaspoon of salt. Bring that to a boil and boil for 5 full minutes, stirring constantly. Add 1 tsp. vanilla and a pinch of cream of tartar - stir and watch for the chemical reaction!
-
Since I had a relatively poor night of sleep last night, I'm shutting everything down and heading downstairs now.
Good night!
-
Here's before any new snow. This is left from prior storms
-
Same view tonight. We only had a few inches today. The worst is coming tomorrow and Friday
-
I'll post some better photos tomorrow. The view is out my parents front door
-
Stay safe, DR Cillaliz!
-
Well, 2 days in the kitchen have worn me out! I still have a couple of things to do tomorrow before we leave for Lima, but nothing as elaborate as what I've done in the last 36 hours.
'night!
-
Thanks Ginny. We're not planning to go anywhere. I talked to my cat sitter today and told her to go ahead and leave extra food and water out in case she can't get there. I'll stay in touch and if I can't get back as planned (very likely) she'll watch the girls til I get back
-
The forecast was just upped to 15-25 inches of snow between Thursday night and Saturday morning
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Finished two motion pictures on Blu-Ray and went to Gelson's to get rolls and was successful but realized as soon as I got home that I forgot Parmesan cheese. I'll have to get some when I'm out collecting the mail tomorrow.
-
I'm making the tuna pasta salad tonight, so that's one less thing to do tomorrow.
