Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the new car smell, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they just got a MOO car.

Topic of the Day:  my best (and actually, only) new car experience was 11 years ago, just like BK.  My previous car, a 1989 Subaru Justy had died a slow and painful (financially, to me) death.  I had to get a new car and one day, my sister and I were driving around to different car dealerships.  We went to a local Ford dealership and they were having a deal...only 0.9% interest and no down payment!  We looked at several different cars (and I got to sit in the fairly new New Volkswagen Beetle...my very first car was a 1976 SuperBeetle), but I ended up only test driving the Ford Escort.  It was quite nice.  I said that I would have to think about it and talk to my financial adviser (my mom) and she came back with me the next day.  We told them that I had a Costco card (which I did) and the deal with Costco was that there was no price haggling, you just play $100 over the invoice price.  That, plus the 0.9% interest deal AND the no down payment deal sealed it!  I filled out the forms and financed through Ford Credit and drove my new car off the lot.  They did take my Justy in trade, but they only gave me $200 for it.  But then, $200 is $200.

I still have my Escort.  I've been fairly diligent about getting it serviced on a regular basis, except that this year I bought a new computer.  I should've waited on the computer and had the car serviced, so that'll be the first thing that I do with my income tax refund next year.  I hope to have this car for several more years...hopefully. :)

Not to rain on anyone's parade but I've never had a new car experience. Living in New York City for the past 29 and a half years has meant I don't need (or want) a car and I don't think, in my entire childhood, that we ever had a "new" car.

TOD: In 1998, We went through the fleet division via the internet, got a price, walked into the dealership, and declined most of the options and the opportunity to test drive. When asked to look at different cars, we said "how about the one parked right there?" and signed papers, wrote a check, and drove home. It was quick and as painless as possible.

My DH needs a new vehicle now, but it's that "write a check" part that's stopping us.

Congrats and kitty-replenishing vibes on the new car. My best new car experience was back in the 80s when I bought an Escort painted (bless car color namers) "Midnight Canyon Red." I didn't know how to drive a standard. The man who sold it to me told me he was going to teach me how to drive it. I thought he was going to turn gray by the end of that little mishap. He told me to take it out in the country, which I did, and I remember backing down a hill because I hadn't figured out how to handle those properly. Still, that was a great car and lasted many miles.
By the way, I bought that in Dr. Elmore's hometown of Middletown, Ohio.

BK, congrats on the new car (can't remember if i said this last night).

Re: you mentioning last night that the neighbors parked on the street (in your spots).

You said you have a garage. But do you have a driveway too? Could you park your car there.  For some reason even though we have snow here. Most people use their garages to store tools and stuff. But they park their cars on their driveways.

Good morning, all! I guess the neighbor above me has guests this week; around 2 am this morning there was a repeat of theactivity the day before: loud talking - 3 voices, 2 men and a woman - and a lot of heavy walking around for a bit before things settled down. It really screws up my sleeping cycle and it took me forever to get back to sleep. I am not amused at the moment and I'm debating how to approach my neighbor.

I have a bit of work here today, as well as a trip to the NYPL. Around 4:30 my friend Val and i will meet up for a movie. I can pick up the tickets on my way to NYPL. Our choices are the new George Clooney film and the one about Young Queen Victoria. I need to call her and give her movie times so we can make a decision.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Safe travel vibes for DR Ron Pulliam! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colder here this morning, but it made for a very enjoyable walk. I should have worn a ski cap, but otherwise, the cold wasn't a problem. Beautiful day today, but tomorrow is supposed to bring rain/sheet/snow. Ugh!
TOD:
Another new car purchaser in 1998 here!  Mine was hunter green Toyota Camry that I fell in love with on first sight (it was, afterall, Valentine's Day.)  What I really loved about the new car purchase experience was the royal treatment I continued to receive from yhe dealership--a can of chocolate chip cookies and baloons were delivered to me at work, they always fit me in for the service appointments I desired and sent lots of coupons and discounts for their servicing.  If or when I do need another new vehicle, I will go back to this particular dealership.
However, my Camry continues to drive like a dream and seems to require only quarterly maintenance trips.  As much as I would have liked to have taken advantage of the incredible car deals this year, I just couldn't justify getting rid of this car yet.
Buying my current car, the 2005 Saturn, was undoubtedly my best buying experience. I loved the no-pressure approach at Saturn, and the car has been a dream. Other than the dead battery a year ago February, I have had no problems with it at all.
CARRIE certainly set audiences screaming all over the country....wow!
Best new car buying experience - my current 2004 PT Cruiser, which I purchased in January 2005.  The price was exactly right, and my old 1994 Pontiac Grand Am went to my sister.....who sold it to my nephew when she moved to Seattle......who promptly wrecked it.....but he doesn't know how it happened....
I can also tell you what my WORST new car experience was. I bought a beautiful white Plymouth, oh, I'd say maybe in 1989 or so. The dealership filled it up with gas, and my partner and I at the time headed home, stopping off at the grocery store en route. When we came out of the grocery store, we smelled the unmistakable smell of gasoline, but I assumed it was from some other car in the lot. When I cranked up the car, I noticed that my gas tank was sitting on 1/3 full. I had heard of BAD gas mileage, but this was the pits! I drove RIGHT BACK to the dealership, and lo and behold, there was no top on the gas tank! It had been left off at the factory and hadn't been discovered since they never kept more than a gallon or so of gas it in at one time. Unbelievable.
And that car ended up being a lemon with tons of problems happening with it within a year or so of purchase. I think I kept that car the least of any car I've ever owned.
The nice thing about having a business manager is that they are all good car experiences.  We say this is what we want, he does all the negotiating.  When we wanted a Corolla Sport, he went to his car broker.  The car was delivered to the house.  The toughest was our new Prius, because they were much in demand and The Lovely Wife was very particular in the colour she wanted.  We had to wait about six months.
The movie times are hellish for a person getting off work at 4:30, and the next showing of UP IN THE AIR is 7 pm, too late for us two fogeys. So, we're seeing Young Victoria at 6 pm. We'll have a little smackerel before the film and I will pick up the tickets on my way down to Lincoln Center today. I am looking forward to it, but that means, DR JRand59, I will have to see UP IN THE AIR on my own. Perhaps I will do that on New Year's Eve. Charlotte will be in Boston seeing a rock concert.
DR Ben, we need to set up a time for a visit to see your tree and decor.
I watched RIDING HIGH last night on TCM.  A Bing Crosby/Frank Capra movie I had never seen.  Pretty good movie, although the songs were sort of blah, as was the leading lady Colleen Gray...  A remake of Capra's BROADWAY BILL - and I guess Mr Capra made a deal with Harry Cohn his old boss to re-use the racing footage from the 1934 movie in the 1950 movie to keep the costs down.
Either way - it had some fine moments.
I've never really been a "car person".  As long as the vehicle gets me to where I'm going in relative comfort and with minimal expense, I'm happy.
I'm still driving my 2000 Honda Accord LX, which only has about 27,000 miles on it.  Just had the timing and other belts replaced, and the mechanic tells me that, with the way I drive, if I take care of the car, it should last me the rest of my life.
Works for me.
Ditto! I'm disappointed folks aren't sttriving to see something of real quality. RAGTIME is one of the greatest musicals of the last 15 years, and FINIAN'S RAINBOW's raves should have insured it the same kind of sellout status that HAIR and WEST SIDE STORY enjoyed when they opened last year. Very disappointing that the public isn't buying in droves.
In 2003 I bought my first ever brand new car, a  Honda Element.  They were just hitting the market.  It's a great car and over the past 7 years of operation, it has way over 100,000 miles on it.  I have one more year of payments on it.  I'm considering a hybrid in the next few years, but in the meantime, the Element is still going strong.  That's the thing about Honda's, if you keep up on the maintenance, they will run forever.
As some of you may remember, we bought a new Chevy Cobalt in February.  It was an easy-peasy deal, no real haggling aside from the trade in value of my old Subaru, which they upped by over a thousand once I started to stand up to leave.  ;)
In other exciting news, I believe my "nuggets of wisdom" (a euphemism, to be sure) are out of me, but I am still very tender.  In fact it occurred to me that off and and on for the past several years I would occasionally get a bit tender in my left kidney area, something I always ascribed to too much caffeine.  It was more of a tingling-numb sensation than real pain, but now I'm wondering if perhaps I've been dealing with smaller "nuggets" for years without ever realizing it.
Hello, gang...
Best new car experience was November, 2003 - I bought my current automobile, a Honda Civic Hybrid -- they were all but giving them away, in those days. I got a super deal, paid cash, and a year later, having put over 30,000 miles on it, I was offered what I had paid for it. The summer of $4 a gallon gas brought some interesting offers, too -- I have consistently gotten 50+ mpg, and now have over 150,000 miles on it - and nary a problem. Not ever.
Yesterday i took my disabled cousin Tina (Morey Orloff's daughter) to Reno for her birthday - a friend from Winnemucca was in Reno with her daughters and new granddaughter. Grueling doesn't cover it - I picked her up from her assisted living facility at 6:45 am, shlepped her (and her dog - she won't leave the building without the dog...) to LAX, parked, got her and said animal (a really sweet terrier - last year I outfiitted her with a 'Service Dog' vest, which allows us to take her everywhere, courtest Americans With Disabilities Act of 1991) through the tightened security. We sat waiting for our plane, while large bomb-sniffing canines and their handlers circled round and round the terminal. Long long long day... meet and greet, sit and visit, go to lunch -- with the dog, sing Happy Birthday to YOU -- deal with Tina's several melt-downs, shlep through Babies R Us and buy gifts for the new baby (I insisted the dog stay in the car for this - another melt-down...), back to the airport, security, no bomb sniffers in Reno airport, cuz after all - RENO?? Plane ride back to LAX, wait on the tarmac for a parking place, deplane, shlep through LAX to the car, drop Tina in her facility at 10:30 pm, and stay at Rikki's, cuz it was only 20 minutes further. How time flies...
MattH - While I was writing the notes, I thought to myself, myself you should go to the imdb and look up Carrie because maybe Sissy was nominated.  And then, being senile, I forgot to do it, so thanks for setting the record straight and it's good to know she got up, and frankly I would have given her the Oscar over Dunaway, and I certainly would have given Piper Laurie the Oscar over Beatrice Straight's one scene performance.  Miss Laurie was, in fact, absolutely brilliant as Mrs. White.
I found my garage door opener so I'm going to go back to the car dealer and have him show me how to pair it with the car so I can just open the garage door without the remote.  I also forgot to get copies of the car reports, which I'd like for my records.
Jose I haven’t tried peanuts from the Virginia Diner.  I can’t remember if we tried the peanut soup.  I think we did but haven’t ordered it since.  I like the peanut butter straw candies.  If I could get a small sized bag I would order it.  Once I made the mistake of getting the tin, which was way too much for me to eat by myself.
Michael, I am very much of the same persuasion.  My car has never been an extension of my personality or my penis.  Eventually, I'd like to get another Prius or hybrid...but it will take a few years...or an unexpected windfall...
TOD:
I've never really been a "car person".  As long as the vehicle gets me to where I'm going in relative comfort and with minimal expense, I'm happy.
I'm still driving my 2000 Honda Accord LX, which only has about 27,000 miles on it.  Just had the timing and other belts replaced, and the mechanic tells me that, with the way I drive, if I take care of the car, it should last me the rest of my life.
Works for me.
Miss Julie, are we neighbors? We are just a walk up the street from Eisenberg's. I've been in Chelsea for 27 years now. I'm on the west side between 5th and 6th Avenues. I moved here before it was cool and trendy and it was still affordable. Some people used to say I lived in the Village but technically it's above 14th Street and west of 5th so it's Chelsea.
The dealer guy programmed the garage door remote so I can now open the garage door from a button in the car, so that's good.  The only thing that's going to take me some time now is that when you pair the iPhone with the car, there's no way to get the address book into the car system - it has to do with the way the iPhone software is set up - but I read up on it online and there are workarounds but they are complex, and since I really don't need all that many phone numbers in the car, I'll just do it by voice and it goes pretty fast.  I already did about five yesterday and it only took a couple of minutes.
Then I watched A STUDY IN TERROR. I hadn't seen it in decades, so it was great fun to revisit it. Love John Neville and Donald Houston as Holmes and Watson, and Robert Morley plays Mycroft. This was obviously made cheaply, but it held my interest completely and wasn't as grisly as MURDER BY DECREE, both of them pitting Holmes against Jack the Ripper.
Columbia sent an open matte transfer to TCM for broadcast. A pity.
I watched RIDING HIGH last night on TCM.  A Bing Crosby/Frank Capra movie I had never seen.  Pretty good movie, although the songs were sort of blah, as was the leading lady Colleen Gray...  A remake of Capra's BROADWAY BILL - and I guess Mr Capra made a deal with Harry Cohn his old boss to re-use the racing footage from the 1934 movie in the 1950 movie to keep the costs down.
Either way - it had some fine moments.
I watched the 8:00 TCM film, BROADWAY BILL.  It was an okay kind of movie but I kept wishing that Clark Gable had done it instead of Warner Baxter.  I then watched the beginning of RIDING HIGH, but I felt like I already went through enough horse drama for one evening.
In other exciting news, I believe my "nuggets of wisdom" (a euphemism, to be sure) are out of me, but I am still very tender.  In fact it occurred to me that off and and on for the past several years I would occasionally get a bit tender in my left kidney area, something I always ascribed to too much caffeine.  It was more of a tingling-numb sensation than real pain, but now I'm wondering if perhaps I've been dealing with smaller "nuggets" for years without ever realizing it.
Be ready for everyone you know to tell you to start drinking cranberry juice to prevent kidney stones.  But I recall reading recently that it really does not do any good.
It certainly didn't do me any good. I had my second one about 18 months after the first when cranberry juice was almost the ONLY thing I did drink between the first and second. Also completely changed my diet (since my stone was calcium-based), and that did no good either.
The UPS delivery was mid-afternoon, and it contained the remaining discs in Criterion's January release list:
CHE on DVD and Blu-ray (four hour film plus bonuses) which comes out on the 19th of January.
PARIS TEXAS on Blu-ray which comes out on the 22nd of January.
ROSSELLINI'S WAR FILMS (his first three neorealist movies beginning with ROME: OPEN CITY) on DVD coming out January 29th.
So, since all of these releases come out during the second half of January, I went ahead and took my day off. Still waiting on the arrival of those Fox releases for the week.
I will tell another of my car-buying stories. Many years ago, a friend of mine and I both needed new cars. Said friend was a very clever fellow and knew much more about cars than I did. We did some car shopping together and, as we began to narrow down our choices, we found that we both were leaning toward a VW Scirocco. Said friend did some research and soon figured out what the mark-ups were on the cars. He then allowed what he felt was a fair profit for the dealer, and soon knew how much he wanted to pay. We went to our favorite salesperson together. The salesperson about choaked when he saw the price said friend proposed. "No way!" We had to explain that we wanted TWO cars, in different colors so we could tell them apart. "TWO cars?" Yes. One for each of us. We made the deal and got the price. The dealer made it clear that we had to buy two or it was no deal. But that was fine; we really did need two cars.
Granted, it's not a strategy one can use often, but it sure worked for us!
Just put the garage in the car - yesterday the cardboard I used for going in worked perfectly - today I heard a little scraping, so I'm going to use two more large pieces and just basically completely cover the incline and see if that works.  Then if it does, the handyman, in essence, can make a large cardboard "mat" that I just pull in and out.
Even though you may not be hearing any more scraping sounds when you drive your car into your garage, that still means that whatever is scraping against the pavement is still being push/pressed "into" your car.  -Which may not be a good thing either in the long run.  I'd have someone check to see what exactly is making contact with the ground and proceed from there.
In other exciting news, I believe my "nuggets of wisdom" (a euphemism, to be sure) are out of me, but I am still very tender.  In fact it occurred to me that off and and on for the past several years I would occasionally get a bit tender in my left kidney area, something I always ascribed to too much caffeine.  It was more of a tingling-numb sensation than real pain, but now I'm wondering if perhaps I've been dealing with smaller "nuggets" for years without ever realizing it.
Be ready for everyone you know to tell you to start drinking cranberry juice to prevent kidney stones.  But I recall reading recently that it really does not do any good.
Actually it does work, and very well.
I loved "The Young Victoria," and I want to read a biography to become more familiar with the royal secession, why her mother and Sir John Conroy kept her away from court beyond the obvious excuse of making her totally relient on themselves, and the politics during her early reign. Emily Blunt is quite wonderful; I have no idea how old she is but she plays the 17 year-old queen-in-turmoil beautifully. The cast is really quite good - Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson and Mark Strong are three of my favorites - and the screenplay intelligent and very romantic. The love story of Victoria and Albert is beautifully done, and Rupert Friend, whom I'd never seen before, convinced me he was German. Great scenery and costumes. The use of music is quite witty, like the use of Schubert after Albert tells Victoria he likes Schubert's music, and the use of the waltz after Victoria tells the visiting Albert that she lkes to waltz. It was quite a wonderful film and i want to see it again.
DR MattH - I thought "Che" ran closer to five hours in total?  I know when it was originally presented here in NYC, they presented it with an intermission and a program book.  -The film was later released as two separate movies.  -Did they include the program book with the screener?
Yes, each part is more than two hours in length so I guess it IS closer to five hours. It's a thick box set, but I haven't cracked the cellophane on it so I don't know what Criterion has included in it. The two parts are housed in their own separate DVD cases.
As I said earlier, I'm really not ready to dive into these because I'm SUPPOSED to have Fox releases that came out today, but they haven't arrived yet.
Next I watched CHANGELING. It's a very involving film even if it IS too long. Lots of fun seeing the wonderful Jeffrey Donovan playing a disreputable  character. Jolie was very good, and I liked seeing Frank Wood doing an understated performance that was really sweet and endearing. Amy Ryan also had a couple of great scenes. A couple of the actors were familiar faces from guest starring roles on TV, but their names weren't familiar.
Good Evening!
Well... I tried to see Ragtime earlier tonight.  When I got to the box office, I found out that this evening's performance was Sold Out.  Then I went ahead and put my name in the hat - well, bucket - for the ticket lottery.  I did not win.  So... I'm going to try the lottery again tomorrow afternoon for the matinee.  And if I win, then I'll see it.  If not, then I'll be on the 5:00 bus back down to Virginia...
I really do hope I get in tomorrow afternoon.
*It will be interesting to see what their gross is for this, their closing week.  They were sold out tonight, and, apparently, they had a pretty good up-tick in sales over the past 24 hours.  Also, from what I could tell, they also pulled the discount codes for the rest of the week - or that allotment of tickets has already been sold (out).
Buy your tickets ASAP, DR vixmom.  Ragtime is also on a special holiday week schedule this week.  They added a show last night, Monday, and will be dark New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.  Then it's just two shows on Saturday, and their closing matinee on Sunday.  *And check BroadwayBox.com for the discount code, and, hopefully, it will still be good.
It's been done before.  I was thinking that they would at least stay open until January 10 - especially in light of all the other shows closing this Sunday, planned and "unplanned".  However, I do know that almost every show on Broadway will be experiencing quite the dip in sales and attendance next week.  *Both Lion King and Billy Elliot were offering special staff rates a few weeks back for the second and third weeks of January; and Wicked is even have a "papering" day or two in January and February.
