Good morning, all! I just put the laundry into the washers. I have a bit of work here today along with a matinee of FINIAN'S RAINBOW; today Joshie makes his Broadway conducting debut and I will be there to cheer him. It will be fun to see the show again and to wish everyone a very happy New Year.

In about another 30 minutes I will mop the bathroom and tidy the apartment. The neighbor above me kept his partying with guests no later than some time around 12:30 am last night, but I don't want to disturb the neighbor below me by doing any noisy housework before 9 am.

I did find a biography about Victoria and Albert on Amazon.com and ordered it; I want to see the film again. I may see UP IN THE AIR on New Year's Day, and I want to see the new Disney film this week as well.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday Wishes to Our DR Dakotacelt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So far, no UPS deliveries this morning, so it appears I may be having another day off. If that's so, I'll watch on of my CHristmas Blu-ray gifts this afternoon and maybe some Warner Archive discs tonight. Certainly there's nothing but reruns on TV, so nothing there of interest.

I really liked the film, too.

Loved "the Bear" and his baseball bat.

Well, I have a different reaction to the two KILL BILL films. I admire them both, but they're SO different from each other, and I really preferred the less frenetic pace and depth of feel of the second one. When I want to watch KILL BILL, I always go for part II first.

I'm not a Tarantino groupie. I haven't seen everything he's done (have never watched RESERVOIR DOGS, for instance), and I was repelled by PULP FICTION when I first saw it. (I suspect it wouldn't be so shocking to me now having seen much of his oeuvre.)

But INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS impressed me from the get-go, and for me it's his best movie by far.

I checked the timing for CHE, DR Jose. Each film runs 129 minutes making a total of 4 hours, 18 minutes, so I guess it ISN'T close to five hours after all.

I have no idea when these Fox discs will arrive that I'm expecting, but provided that I get them done by the weekend, I'll be spending next week with these Criterion releases. I'm really looking forward to seeing PARIS TEXAS again after all these years.

As for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE II, unquestionably the worst of the three movies. I still think the first one is the best one.

I recorded last night's NCIS rerun, so that's likely what I'll watch while I eat lunch. They're always fun to revisit. I just hope it's an episode from this season since I'm making my way back through last season's episodes now from the DVD box set.

The only Tarantino movie that I didn't like was his GRINDHOUSE contribution.  Absolutely boring!

If UP IN THE AIR does not win the Best Picture Oscar, I would like to see it go to INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.

The UPS truck pulled up right alongside my house, and I was sure that was signalling the arrival of the Fox Blu-rays and GLEE, but, nope. He walked right past my front door.

So, looks like a day off for me! Means I'll be able to enjoy the (hopefully) hot reconcilliation scene between Kyle and Oliver today on ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

Again, I haven't cracked open the box yet, but it appears from the quick glance I gave it that in addition to the two movies, there's another disc of bonus material. So, this is going to take me at least two days of work to do everything. One day to watch both parts (afternoon and evening installments, I suspect). And then a separate day on the bonus features, similar to the way I approached 8 1/2.

I had a great flight back (and SUPER service in 1st Class).

Slept...watched the movie "All About Steve" (don't waste your money on DVD...watch on HBO or other premium channel...or wait for network broadcasts).

Got in early, got home reasonably soon after.  Unpacked.  Caught up on e-stuff.  Drove my car to market for some groceries.  Returned and ate a couple of sandwiches.  Watched a little TV and was ready for bed by 8:30 p.m.

Slept well...got up at 5:30 a.m. and have been doing e-stuff ever since.

Need coffee.  Need food.  Need a NAP!

It is a good, basic list, however, I will say I guess it's more slanted toward "usage" rather than "misspelling". However, they are quite common, sometimes too common. ;)

*There is usually a bit of "forgiveness" when it comes to misspelling "difficult words".  Not so much with "lose" v. "loose", and "its" v. "it's".

DR Elmore - give Josh our best on this special day!

I will; we were just PM-ing on Facebook. He's getting excited and there will be several of his good friends there to cheer for him. I just wrapped his debut gift and I need to find a nice card.

He's a little nervous and very excited. The orchestra, which has a lot of Encores! players, loves him, and Suzanne, the concert master, and Billy, the drummer, will help him along although I don't think he'll need much help. Suzanne played for a recording session he did last year and she says he's a really good conductor.

I am so looking forward to this.

Question for BK:  with there being ten slots for Best Picture in this year's Oscar race, which schlock release do you think might be able to find its way into being nominated?

I haven't seen enough movies this year to know, but ten slots is just ridiculous and just about everything that was an Oscar bait film can get up.

CDs arrived at nine and I've got all the domestic copies packaged and am going to do some of the overseas now.  These are more complicated than usual because of the multiples, which sometimes includes one copy of one and two copies of another and then sometimes an older CD - I have to be very careful.  I have not heard a peep from the helper about stopping in Century City for the tapes - I've left her another message and another e-mail, but I have to tell her she's got to get back to me in a much more timely manner than this.

In other news - it's pouring rain.  The new motor car is nice and dry in the garage environment, and I think I'll do the shipping of the packages in the old motor car or in the helper's car.

DR JOSESPIANO mentioned Tabitha's Salon Takeover - I was watching it last night, too - but had to turn it off.  Tabitha was visiting a salon in Chicago's Boys' Town....and the guys working there were mostly unskilled and I wouldn't let any of them cut my hair - and I don't even have much.

Yes, MR BK - I remember your musings on The Brothers Smothers....this new book is most interesting.  And as the years have gone by.....and even at the time - I had the boys mixed up and thought that it was Dick who was causing all the trouble....turned out to be the older brother Tom - who played the younger brother in the boys' act....  Tom's dealings with CBS were most interesting, and the network really did try to work with them, until Tom decided he was bigger than CBS....  He wasn't.

I have been beseiged with much anecdotal musings about kidney stones over the past few days.  I feel like I'm in a very exclusive club.  Not.  ;)  I did pick up some Cranberry juice mixes (I can't stand cranberries, so I need to have the flavor masked with something else).  I'm currently having some cranberry-raspberry concoction that isn't half bad.  Unfortunately, it isn't half good either.

I am now more convinced than ever that I've been dealing with apparently very small stones for years, as my kidneys since yesterday have had the same dull aching, slightly numb feeling I get once or twice a year.  I am assuming this is residual pain from the stones.  Who knows when I will be able to see the urologist--every time I call, they place me on hold, and it has been a nightmare to try to get the ER records to them.

Alas... No Ragtime for me.  The matinee was sold out, and I did not win the ticket lottery.  Ah, well.

However, while I was waiting in front of the Neil Simon for my name (not) to be drawn, I did run into two of my dear friends from DC who are in the cast of Ragtime.  So, even though I did not get to see them in the show, I'm very glad I had a chance to briefly chat with them, give them a good hug, and wish them well.

I - and my doctor - came to same conclusion last year (or was that already two years ago?).  In any case...

Yes, it can take a while for some of the residual pain to recede.  It can also mean that there are still some smaller stones aggravating things.  However, it does sound like the "biggie" has passed.  -Thankfully, I never had a "biggie".

As for cranberry juice, yes, it can help.  However, depending on exactly what is causing the kidney stones - like if they're due to some sort of low-level infection - cranberry juice can have little to no effect.  In some cases, it can actually make the situation worse. -Which is why a urinalysis is important.

I have completed my sparkling new arrangement of Blame it on the Bossa Nova for my upcoming Pops session.  I must say Ms. Eydie Gorme is rather shrill on her higher notes in her hit version and I'm frankly surprised her producer let that version hit the market, though of course it was one of her biggest hits, so what do I know?  I'm sure JR prefers Annette's rendition.

Do Broadway conductors wear black tie?

It depends on the show, and/or the time of day (matinee v. evening).  Some shows just require black clothes, others do require black tie/tuxedo.  However, some "black tie" shows do allow the conductor to wear a nice black suit or dressy black shirt for matinees.  In most cases, it's conductor's choice, taste.

However, if the production does require the musicians to wear "black tie", then, in most cases, the musicians are able to place their tuxes and dresses in with the wardrobe department weekly dry-cleaning.

Disaster at the Vienna Staatsoper
By Larry L. Lash
MusicalAmerica.com
December 21, 2009

VIENNA -- There are disasters, and then there are disasters. The Titanic was a mere drop in the bucket compared to Vera Nemirova’s new production of “Macbeth,” which premiered at Wiener Staatsoper on Dec. 7, just in time for Pearl Harbor Day. The booing, yelling and unmitigated outrage from the audience that began five minutes into the performance, rising in a deafening crescendo when the provacateuse and her design team took their bow, was unprecedented in my eight years in Vienna.

Did no one in the company’s artistic administration take a peek in the rehearsal hall?

Where was in-name-only Music Director Seiji Ozawa to ask, “Who is this unknown conductor, Guillermo Garcia Calvo (called upon to replace Daniele Gatti who withdrew for health reasons, as did the conductor of the last Staatsoper premiere, Kirill Petrenko), who doesn’t know the score or how to communicate with the pit or the stage, and certainly not how to coordinate them? Who are these singers who are totally unequipped to perform Verdi’s music?”

Where were the company dramaturges Andreas Láng and Oliver Láng to say, “Whoa! This has nothing to do with the intentions of Verdi or Shakespeare or librettists Francesco Maria Piave and Andrea Maffei. This is not a ‘Monty Python’ sketch.”

Most notably, where was lame duck Intendant Ioan Holender to say, “How dare you put this pile of excrement on the stage of one of the world’s greatest opera houses, further tarnishing its reputation as well as what’s left of mine?”

Nemirova, a pupil of and assistant to Regietheater gods Ruth Berghaus and Peter Konwitschny, has pulled stunts like this before, most notably with the operetta “Gräfin Mariza” at Volksoper Wien in 2002 which provoked such a scandal it made national front-page news. At her Staatsoper debut, Tchaikovsky’s “Pique Dame” in September 2007, audiences expecting the worst were startled by her well-thought-through, coherent, compelling, memorable production. She had, it seemed, grown up.

No such luck. Nemirova set “Macbeth” in a burnt-out forest (blackened tree trunks courtesy of Johannes Leiacker) on which was set a small, flimsy proscenium like you might see at a summer camp. A few set pieces – Duncan’s bier and coffin, Mr. and Mrs. Macbeth’s bathroom – rose and fell on a central elevator.

The witches seemed to be a cult of rich dames, all dolled up in black evening gowns, gathered in the forest to watch a piece of performance art featuring a canvas stretched on the ground onto which nude women slathered in paint rolled around. (Cue the first boos.)

Things really got ugly when fat King Duncan (Peter Leutgöb) and his kilt-clad retinue entered in a sort of three-steps-forward-two-steps-backward prance, aping the Pythons’ immortal “Department of Silly Walks.” The king then took a bubble bath, blowing foam into the air, followed by a nap on the Macbeths’ bed.

Screwing his courage to the sticking place, Simon Keenlyside, who at 50 still has his Billy Budd body, stripped off his shirt and tie for Macbeth’s blood-soaked murder of Duncan, and was then made to take a shower onstage joined by his wife, both of them clothed.

Banqo’s murderers wore trench coats, white gloves and red clown noses and carried red helium-filled balloons. Banquo’s ghost appeared at the banquet with a balloon. Included for the first time at Staatsoper was the rarely-performed ballet music for the witches’ frolic in the third act. During this farrago, the ladies’ club donned white terrycloth bathrobes and wrapped their heads in bath towels. Booing occasionally drowned out or postponed the music.

The bearing of children’s corpses by the chorus men during Macduff’s lament to his country made a striking image, but how to get them offstage? For the duration of a small eternity, they rose in silence and slowly backed upstage, garnering outright guffaws from the audience. They reappeared at the opera’s end bearing small pine trees, as Birnam Wood to Dunsinane Hill did come.

The first post-performance boos were for Stefan Kocán, a Slovak basso with a tendency to sing flat, utterly lacking the depth and style required for Banquo. Considerably more vehemence greeted debutant Erika Sunnegardh, who sounded more like a provincial soubrette than a Lady Macbeth, her voice tiny, screechy, unable to meet Verdi’s demands for fioratura, and totally blowing the climactic high D-flat at the end of her Sleepwalking Scene, so poorly sung it drew both laughter and booing.

Garcia Calvo, too, received his share of contempt in exchange for his consistent incompetence in the pit. New York native Dimitri Pittas, another debutant, was given a hearty welcome, very possibly because he wasn’t awful. He cut a handsome, sympathetic figure as Macduff and sang his big aria quite well, even if his sizeable tenor comes across steely, lacking Italianate warmth and beauty.

The sole triumph of the evening was Keenlyside’s brave performance. Save for a few dramatic moments where a sympathetic conductor might have worked with him rather than make him force, his was a masterful, elegantly-sung Macbeth, his big, burnished gold baritone flooding the house with true Verdian style. That he made it through the production without any sacrifice of dignity (when a pram containing an Uzi pushed onstage by Lady Macbeth kept rolling, Keenlyside kicked it far upstage, earning applause) was a further testament to the artistry that makes him one of the most intelligent and fascinating singers of our time.

Adding insult to injury, Nemirova took repeated bows as if she enjoyed being the center of the hatred of 2,000 people, perhaps with the foresight that she will not likely be on a stage in Vienna again anytime soon. This was no Scottish tragedy but merely a puerile farce.

Masochists and fans of Keenlyside may wish to attend performances this week (Dec. 21 and 26) or five more in May 2010.

Sorry--I thought I had told it before.  I opened for them at a charity fundraiser in Seattle.  I was arranger and Music Director for a sort of neomodern "Andrews Sisters" group (not siblings, but three women who did my close harmony arrangements).  The Brothers soundchecked on a folksong, can't remember which, but Dick just lit into Tom for not knowing his harmonies, and they both got rather nasty with each other with me, my band and vocalists just standing there twiddling our thumbs.  I found Dick a little nicer than Tom, but they were both kind of dismissive, even when I told them I knew Mason Williams.

Apparently, there was a service recall on our dishwasher.  They tend to catch fire sometimes.  Bosch knew about this in January.  They just mailed a letter about it to us a few weeks ago.      ::)

DR Jose I just clicked on your list of words that people spell incorrectly. For some reason i thought it would be difficult words, and not just the basics.  But still interesting.

Funny, i expected little misspelled words such as "the".

I guess it just depends what you were expecting.  IMO what they listed would be for someone in grade 7.

He wasn't.

Tommy played the younger brother in the act? I didn't remember that.

Do they say "Urology Department...please hold" ?

I spent the majority of the afternoon watching THE BOURNE SUPREMACY on HD-DVD. The Bourne films are being individually released on Blu-ray soon (box set already out but too expensive for me to buy), and apart from an upgrade in the soundtrack from Dolby DIgital Plus to Dolby TrueHD on the Blu-rays, there wouldn't be any difference in these discs, so I won't upgrade; I'll continue to enjoy what I already have (and paid almost nothing for: I got one of the BOURNE films on HD-DVD free and the other two were $4 close-outs).

SUPREMACY had been my least favorite of the three films, but looking at it again today, it's really a fine action film and no better or worse than the other two. They're all about equal in quality: thrills galore, fast paced action, and great cat-and-mouse plotting.

Yes DR MATTH - Here's Lucy is from MPI and The Lucy Show is from Paramount/CBS.

I'm guessing THE LUCY SHOW didn't sell well enough for Paramount to bother any further with it. MPI probably manufactured fewer of the HERE'S LUCY sets and they sold well enough to continue with the series.

That's just a guess, but Paramount has stopped production of LOTS of shows after just one or two boxes if they didn't sell well.

It was a disaster when it premiered, too.   ;D

Verdi's MACBETH was a big hit for him in 1847, so I'm not sure what means. His later revisions to the work in the 1860's, prompted by Leon Carvalho's wish to stage the opera in Paris, led Verdi to reexamine with embarrassment some of his early thoughts as a composer. His major disasters in first performances were LA TRAVIATA and SIMON BOCCANEGRA.

I do not understand Eurotrash productions, such as the Viennese one reviewed here, and I cannot comprehend why such idiots continue to be hired to direct and are allowed to enforce such idiocy onto a work.

Joshie thanks you all for your good wishes and I believe he made a most auspicious conducting debut. His opening number "This Time of the Year" was a bit fast and Rob and I decided it was adrenaline. "How Are Things In Glocca Morra" was quite lovely and he seemed to settle down after that. Rob had a few notes but I think he was very pleased with Josh's performance.

Jack Viertel, who's one of the show's producers as well as the current director of Encores! and Josh's boss there, stood on the stairs to the mezzanine with Rob and me. A group of Josh's friends had the front rwo center, right behind Josh, and they cheered him on as well. The matinee was packed and latecomers were still arriving at 45 minutes after the show had begun. During the Overture an old man sitting in the second or third row center of the orchestra stood up to remove his coat and he was suddlenly in Josh's spotlight. Several audience members thinking he was somebody started to applaud. I turned to Rob and said, it's the ghost of Burton Lane risen from the dead.

The packed house loved the show and gave it a standing ovation today; this is not a common occurrence at the St James.

Tnhere was one funny moment today: in one of the bits of Og's magic, the conductor has to toss a rooster to Og. Rob and David Gursky have no problem with it. Josh's toss barely made it and Chris barely caught it. Rob and I thought it was quite funny.

DT TCB, I saw Cheyenne today and got your signed photo.

He wasn't.

Tommy played the younger brother in the act? I didn't remember that.

i always thought he was the younger brother.  i don't recall mention of which one was the oldest.  i tried to find info on that and couldn't.  i went to IMBD and read
tom's father survived the Bataan Death March, and died on a Japanese POW ship. He was buried at sea.  however, Dick's father was a POW in WW II and died during the Bataan Death march.

Wikipedia sets it straight, their father died while being transported from a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Fukuoka, Japan, to a POW camp in Mukden, Manchukuo.

Greetings from the NJ Turnpike! (?)

We just pulled out of the Walt Whitman rest area, which means we should be in DC by 9:00 as scheduled, traffic permitting. It's been a relatively uneventful trip so far, although the woman sitting in front of me keeps "coughing" into a bag every couple of minutes. Time to break out the Airborne!

Well, i'm catching up on today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE and when Staci said, "my baby's father is right over there" and pointed to the bar where Rex, the one she's fooling about being the father, and Fish, who is the father, were sitting, I thought I would fall out of bed I was laughing so hard.

Some of the acting on this soap is so much better than any other soap I've watched. So why won't Tad tell Daniella he's her father? I'd slap the shit out of that whiny little bitch if she pulled a gun on me.

With Absinthe, you pour the Absinthe over the sugar cube, which is placed on a silver spoon.

As most of you know, I like to play my cards close to the vest in terms of upcoming releases.  But, and this is not for publication ANYWHERE - here's a what if for you.  Most of you are aware that Ryko put out Promises, Promises on CD, which was then reissued by Varese five years ago (they just cloned the Ryko issue).  The What if is this: What if I could go in and remix the album and for the first time fix Jerry Orbach's and Edward Winter's pitchy vocals?  I would also include the original album mix - which, I think you'll find interesting, has NEVER been on CD.  I have found out that what Ryko put out was re-mixed and while they had the album as reference, it was remixed and therefore, no matter how close they got it, it is not the same.  I could never figure out why the Ryko was so disappointing to my ears, and now I know why - all new mix, all new EQ.  But the original album masters are in fine shape.  I would like to know your opinions on this.

Thank you Larry... Also thank you for the movie recommendation.. DH and I may see Young Victoria this weekend.

All the best to Josh in his debut tonight

DR Jose I just clicked on your list of words that people spell incorrectly. For some reason i thought it would be difficult words, and not just the basics.  But still interesting.

Funny, i expected little misspelled words such as "the".

The and my other favorite word taht or that...

We had good news today.  the carpet was found (it was in a truck that was stuck somewhere by the snow storm) and the workmen finished putting in the tack strip and the pad. So, they will definitely get the carpet in this week.  It's been very touch and go.  The guys were very nice today and volunteered to work New Years day and all weekend to finish it for me. Looks like they won't have to

I agree... OLTL has had its moments and right now it seems to be on the right track again. They had some really good storylines around 2003 - 2004 also

My first question for ASK BK day.....do you like The Smothers Brothers, did you watch their show?

How many of us remember The Smothers Brothers' sit-com wherein one of them was an angel?

I certainly remember the show - Friday nights at 9:30. I wouldn't have missed it for the world, and I was DEVASTATED when it got canceled. And I believe the ratings were OK. If they had used the term back then, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS SHOW would have been "on the bubble."

I had a pleasant evening of viewing. I began with THE VERDICT from Warner Archive. This is one of the better looking of the releases I have from them. Sure, there's dirt and some debris, but the grayscale is great and the picture is quite sharp. Audio track is full of flutter, but I'm just glad to have it at all.

When it was finished, I put in THE MAKING OF GONE WITH THE WIND. This two hour documentary is pretty definitive. I just wish they had shown us ALL of the screen tests in this release instead of the usual excerpts. I'd like to see every scrap of film on Vivien Leigh and Paulette Goddard.

I also think Selznick was hard on Jeffrey Lynn who gave a good reading of Ashley (Douglass Montgomery had some good moments in his Ashley scene, too), and he certainly would have been closer to the right age than Leslie Howard. Of course, he wasn't (and never would be) a star.

I was also pretty disappointed with the last PP release (both with the sound and the unattractive cover.)

Count me in.

I was hoping to see it when I came in.  And I doubt the producers are up to the shenanigans of the Ragtime producers (you know who they are) - their one-week "extension" I believe was totally planned.  And maybe it will be two weeks and then four.  In the end, no matter how many weeks they play this game, they will lose their investors' entire investment.

But they will also keep a company of actors, musicians, technicians and house staff employed for one more, two more, ## more weeks. Producers invest in a show knowing the risk. Actors audition for a show hoping that it will run long enough for them to qualify for insurance.

Ah, well... Not the ideal situation for anyone involved. :-\

There's nothing terrible about that.  Sometimes a quiet New Year's Eve is a good thing, and just what one needs to ring out the old and bring in the new.  Just play it by ear.  -Especially considering your "continuing" weather.

I've got all the tapes here.  From what I can tell from the digital copy they made of the multi-tracks (that's how they did this remix) the vocals seem to be clean, on separate tracks.  Therefore I can digitally pitch them where they need to be.  It's actually not THAT many notes and I wouldn't do everything but it would be great to fix the really egregious notes.

Ahhhh....I just finished burning a DVD after frantically editing up until the last minute. I'll still be tweaking in NY, in preparation of a meeting with the producer, director, composer and writer. My assistant editor worked on it today and I haven't watched it through but that's what I hope to do in the airport/plane.

I hope the weather plays nice and I can have better travels than last time!

I'll be staying down in the village on 10th if anyone would like to meet up. Greg and I just want to have a little break away from things. I hope this is a good idea! At least my housesitter is happy we're going away; she likes staying here, needs the money and loves the kitties!
