Hahaha......DR MATTH mentioned IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER which I also watched yesterday on TCM....I think it's part of an MGM musical box set that I own....

Anyway.....later on in the day (since it was Cyd Charisse's birthday) we had TWO WEEKS IN ANOTHER TOWN....and I noticed for the first time, that as Leslie Uggams (hukka the bejeepers) is making her film debut as a chanteuse, she is wearing Delores Gray's orange/red gown from her "Thanks but No Thanks" number from FAIR WEATHER.....the same dress....altered no doubt in some areas....and the fur piece around the hips may be have been removed, Leslie was sitting down, so by the time I really noticed it, they were shooting her in a medium shot....

It's a great Kipling story as well....I don't think it's an entire novel....perhaps a LONG short story.  ;D

Good morning, all! I slept late and now I'm listening to pop songs of the 1940s; I'm on a panel for an audience talk-back after YANK! tonight at the York, and I need to brush up on my WW 2 songs. When I was growing up in the 1950s, all my mother and dad sang were esoteric 30s and 40s songs, especially the nonsensical ones like "Three Little Fishes" and "Mairzy Doats." I hope it goes well tonight.

I have some work today on BABES IN TOYLAND, reconciling all comments on "Evaline McCook," and I have a bit of THE WIZARD OF OZ to proof. I'm waiting to hear from Kevin Spirtas about handing over this bass part and I need a trip to NYPL as well.

NYTW Plans to Produce Off-Broadway Musical Revival Concert Series

James C. Nicola, artistic director of the New York Theater Workshop, has announced plans to present a series of concerts of previously produced Off-Broadway musicals.

Similar to the City Center Encores! series — which offers great American musicals in concert form — the plan is to produce three shows per season, starting next fall, in low-tech (no set) concert versions.

"We could go for decades and never run out of interesting things, particularly if you're not too terribly rigid about defining Off-Broadway," Nicola told The New York Times.

Al Carmines and Maria Irene Fornes' Promenade (1969) as well as Doug Dyer, Gretchen Cryer and Peter Link's Iphigenia in Concert (1971) have been mentioned as titles to launch the series.

Works by Nancy Ford and the team of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt are also being considered. The Times reports Doug Wright, Michael Greif and James Lapine have expressed interest in participating in the new series.

"I'm also hoping it would be a breeding ground for revised versions of things that maybe in the moment didn't find their final form," added Nicola.

I got the funniest phone call last night from my 4 1/2 year old niece. She has learned how to dial the phone on her own. So she calls me up and whispers in the phone (she only knows how to do it on speakerphone) that i should talk very quietly.

It is my sister's birthday tomorrow (her mother) and she wanted to know if i had any ideas (her term).

I told her to go in the kitchen so my sister couldn't hear her. I then told her i was going to make some cupcakes. So she says, "um, great idea" and then she was done! :)

I just read this:

Why weren't Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur included in the "In Memoriam" package on Sunday's Oscars telecast?

Academy spokesperson Penny Melidonian pointed out that both actresses were better known for television. "We cannot include everyone," she said.

Another day of too many things to do and not enough time to enjoy what gets done. Anyway, I practically grew up in the art house cinema, the Vogue, that was about a mile from my house in Louisville. I can remember seeing Bergman festivals and Fellini festivals plus an assortment of Kurosawa, Resnais, Goddard and Truffaut, all a pleasant alternative to the noise of "Star Wars" and other mainstream movies of the time that I didn't care for then and still don't really like now.

So, here's a partial list:

Chishu Ryu, "Tokyo Story"
Mastroianni, "La Dolce Vita," "8 1/2"
Liv Ullmann, "The Emigrants/The New Land," "Personna"
Gunnar Bjornstrand, "Smiles of a Summer Night," "The Magician"
Max von Sydow, "The Emigrants/The New Land," "The Seventh Seal"
Toshiro Mifune, "High and Low," "Yojimbo"
Deneuve in anything, most recently in "A Christmas Tale"
Anna Karina, Sami Frey, Claude Brasseur in "Band of Outsiders"

The list could go on to include Sophia Loren, Jeanne Moreau, Alain Delon, Erland Josephson and Isabelle Hupert in just about anything.  I'm sure I'm forgetting any number of others.

I didn't watch the Oscars, but I bet Michael Jackson was included and he made fewer films than Farrah or Bea Arthur.

DR Jennifer - You mean you didn't print out your own Oscar ballot? ;)

Seriously... Even though there were 10 films nominated this year, there were really only 3 true contenders for the top honor of the evening. People had their favorites, and if it turned out that their favorite was not the one that Tom Hanks read aloud at the end, well... That's really all that matters.

*And even though I only caught the last 45 minutes of the broadcast, I could still name at least seven of the ten nominated films right off the top of my head.  It's all part of the "prep" before Oscar night.

**And I'm sure that if they had read the names of all ten Best Picture nominees, by the time the winner was read, I - (and probably you - ?) - would not be able to rattle off all ten without having to consult some sort of written list.  The "joys" of short-term memory.

DR Jennifer - The other links aren't that "spoilerish" either.  There's simply no way the producers and writers would leak any real information about the final episodes.  Additionally, most of those links link to previous articles about "Lost" on that site, TVGuide.com and other TV sites.  So, if you've been keeping up with Things "Lost" on the web, there's really no new information.

The fact of the matter is, however, that you saw the show and the ten nominees, and you know the winner. That's ALL that's important. If you want to know what the other nine nominees were, there are PLENTY of places you can go to for that information after the fact.

I cannot wait for that WHITE COLLAR finale (which we get on Fridays).

On tv tonight for me: AMERICAN IDOL, LOST, THE GOOD WIFE and PARENTHOOD.

I am not completely sold on the latter. But I love Lauren Graham and she is in it a lot (or at least she was in the pilot a lot). It's a family drama with a lot of well known cast members.  My favorites being Lauren Graham and Peter Krause.

I did something very painful this morning.  I really don't know how i did this. But when i went to get something out of the cupboard i smashed the door right into my nose.  My nose was immediately in terrible pain and my head hurt.  I knew i didn't break it but i almost felt light headed. It really hurt.

I put an ice pack on it. And took two motrin.  I now have a big scrape on my nose and it still feels very tender. Ouch! :(

I saw this interview online that Simon Cowell did with Jay Leno (i guess he was last night).  He was talking about his fiancee. But he was actually asked about AMERICAN IDOL. And i'm not sure if he said this person was his favorite or just if he really liked her. But he mentioned crystal bowersox. I guess that will help her last for quite a while.

Thanks for the SOUTHALND reminder DR MATTH.

MR BK - if you cut off the less than ten dealers.....you also cut off the less than ten customers who use them....and who may find their way to Kritzerland.com sooner or later....or even HHW.

Those dealers might be someone's only source - for one reason or another.

I've already transferred them over to DVD-R, of course, but not in HD, so before Time-Warner takes them off their On Demand section, I watched them again in HD. Only got through Mao Asada's skate, but I'll like watch Joannie's and Marai's programs tonight at some point.

While I ate lunch, I watched last night's CASTLE. Once we got all of the various testimony, it was easy to figure out the murderer, but that didn't happen until about 10 minutes before the end of the episode. They kept holding back info and making these "surprise" discoveries. Still, fun episode as usual.

Then I watched my work project for the day DILLINGER IS DEAD. Yes, it was a strange film, basically the mundane evening and morning of a discontented man: he cooks his own dinner after he is left cold leftovers by his wife, he polunders in the pantry and finds an old revolver which may have been the property of John Dillinger (hence the title of the film), a gun he proceeds to work on all night off and on taking it apart, oiling it and getting it to work. He shows old home movies and tries to jump into them on the wall. He sneaks upstairs and dallies with the live-in maid. He takes a snake toy and squirms it around his sleeping wife (who's dead to the world after taking two sleeping pills). And on and on all night long.

Won't spoil the ending for anyone who might want to see it, but it does, of course, come as a surprise after all of the nothing things that happen during the evening.

I watched all of the bonus features, too. One was an interview with the film's star Michel Piccoli who offers his interpretation of the film. Another is by a scolar of the director who had a completely different interpretation of the events of the movie. And there was a roundtable discussion at Cannes of the director a few months after he died. Bertolucci was one of the participants. And the trailer was included.

It's such a great thriller that if I have time tonight, I'm going to take the DVD off the shelf and start it where I left off on the DVR. Well, new Lipid test results are in and thanks in large part to Jane's incessant nagging, there has been a ginormous improvement:

Total Cholesterol down 29% to 161
Bad Cholesterol down 39% to 84
Good Cholesterol up 19% to 37

Triglycerides are down 31% to 210 (still a little high but an expected side-effect of my other meds.

I just wish I knew how much is attributable to the Zocor, and how much diet. I insisted on trying the Zocor, for which there is an el-cheapo generic rather than the budget-busting Lipitor. Cheap may not be best but it seems good enough!

PS to Jane - I took Keith's recommendation on Mayo and trashed the low-fat for the lite - much, much better; I can live with it.

I'm with you.  I'm extremely prone to nightmares & I'm sure doing jury duty could trigger some whoppers.  I also can't sit still for long periods. They don't let you snack either, even if your blood sugar is low.   I don't think they permit you to get up & stretch.  If I don't walk around I can get leg cramps.  I can see the reaction now when I hopped up, jumped around & yelled OUCH, OUCH, OUCH! ;D

Ginny, that not being able to move around is why I thought your doctor would give you a medical excuse.  I have a medical excuse, not for any of the above reasons.

It's okay. But my head still hurts. I'm not sure if i hit my head too. But right when it happened i felt extreme pain in my nose and my head.

Some how the cupboard door scraped my nose and there is a big scrape mark. But it can easily be covered up if i go out.  My head has a constant light pain. That's what i'm more concerned about since i'm not sure exactly what to do about it.

With a knock that hard to your nose going up into your head you should take it easy for a few days, or more.  Try not to bang your nose again & I suggest you don't do any activities where your head is bouncing around.  If you ride your bike, try to avoid bumps.  You should be fine.

So...let me get this straight....the new paperback version will be called

Precious a novel based on the movie Precious based on the novel Push by Sapphire.

It will have to be a trade size paperback, for sure.

MR BK attending another reading of another new musical?  I hope this one truly is what it claims to be...NEW and MUSICAL.

Can't tell you who sang it, but DR Elmore and I saw a bizarre "dance of the seven veils" number to it in an amateur talent show here about 32 years ago.

It could be worse.  One of my co-workers was called for Federal Grand Jury Duty.  Once a month for an entire year, he has to report for a day of Grand Jury investigations.

Ginny - maybe you'll find jury duty interesting?
I doubt they'll even pick you, once you explain to them that you're sure the person is guilty or the cops never would have arrested him.   ;D

No, that's not the ticket. If you say "I could never convict another human being because it's not my place to judge another's actions" that will get you off quicker.    ;)

Thanks for all the jury duty vibes.  While I'm usually pretty open to new experiences, this is one I dread.  Maybe I watch too much Law & Order.

LOL, here they have stretch breaks quite often,  jurors can have bottled water and if it's a problem judges will make whatever accomodations that need to be made.  Jurors are treated like royalty.  I haven't seen many cases that would cause nightmares...put you to sleep, yes...nightmares...not likely

Ginny, they will ask if you have any medical conditions...tell them. If you can only sit for a certain period of time, just say so.  You may be excused if it's a problem for the way they do things in that court.

If you don't feel you can listen fairly to the topic of the law suit, say so.  No one will be mean about it, they just want to know if you'll be a fair juror for that particular type of case.  No one in the world can be fair about everything.  We all have issues that we just can't get around. If you really think it will give you nightmares, tell them you don't think you can do it.  They will appreciate your candor.

And remember, the parties to the law suit will be so much more nervous than you are, the lawyers will likely be more nervous than you are and the judge will be watching everyone in the court room so he or she won't likely be focused on you either.   It will be ok.

Honestly, I know very few people who have actually been jurors who later regret it.  Many say it's one of the most interesting things they've ever done.....maybe they need a life, or maybe it really is interesting :)   Hope you enjoy it

When I went back down, I watched the new release of the 1933 ALICE IN WONDERLAND. It was just as I remembered it; kind of plodding and rather cumbersome with those huge masks and pantomime costumes they're all wearing. There is some imagination at work, and they'[ve made an honest effort to capture some of the craziness of the books.

Still, a few people are very recognizable (Edna Mae Oliver, May Robson, Edward Everett Horton) and even when the face masks or heavy make-up hides their appearance, you can recognize voices like Cary Grant, Charlie Ruggles, Sterling Holloway, Gary Cooper, W.C. Fields, and many others.

When that concluded, I did as I said I would do and pulled out THE RIVER WILD and watched from the time of the husband's escape from the crooks up to the end.

This was a very early DVD release, but it's one of the best video and audio transfers going, and I preferred it to the reformatted HBO-HD telecast earlier today.

However, this one will be HIGH on the list of Blu-ray purchases if and when Universal decides to release it.

I was on a panel of three with Peter Mintun and David Kenney, who has a radio show "Everything Old Is New Again" on WBAI and WBAI online. He loves my work and raved about BK's albums when we were talking before the show. I thought our moderator talked way too much and didn't follow through with all of us after asking a question. After the show I suppose we talked to a group of around 25-30 people, and I had a good time. I descrbed YANK! as a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical play influenced by Noel Coward's BITTERSWEET and written by Frank Loesser and filtered through a post-Sondheim sensibility. I don't hear any Kern or Rodgers in the score, but I do hear Loesser, as well as Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer and Jule Styne.

I have been shlepping boxes to the new house for days and am very, very sore.  This morning there was snow at the new place, which is at least a couple hundred feet higher than our current home.  Also as I was leaving a rather large coyote ran behind my car and then just stood in my front yard staring at me, as if to say, "Who are you?"  ;)

In the worrying about stupid things department, I had been a little bummed out to discover that the huge Panasonic flatscreen that is mounted on the beautiful river rock fireplace in the family room only had one HDMI input, so I had momentarily decided we'd just have DirecTV there and SD-DVD with components.  Then suddenly it dawned on me that there were probably HDMI switchers just as there are component switchers, and I found many cheap ones on Amazon and have ordered one, so we'll have Blu-ray and DirecTV on that TV.  We have so many friggin' tv's now with this new house, it's ridiculous.  Methinks we'll be having a garage sale.

I did manage to get everything from my "music closet" over to the new house, and that was a huge shlep.  That includes not just my piano-vocal scores, but tons of orchestral stuff (some in "big" conductor's scores) that I've amassed through the years.  I have too damn much junk.

We have coyotes in our current neighborhood, too, but they are rather shy and will run away as soon as you make eye contact with them.  The one this morning at the new place was rather brazen.  I rolled down the car window and made a "shoo" sound and it just looked at me, totally nonplussed.  I guess that means there aren't very many cats or small dogs in this neighborhood.  ;)

My first stop was The High Line, but since I hadn't had lunch yet, I decided to stop into Myers of Keswick (http://myersofkeswick.com/) to pick up a pork pie and ginger beer to eat "up there".

As I turned down lower 9th Avenue, I thought I recognized someone sitting at one of the sidewalk café tables.  Lo and behold, I did recognize him...

-Hello, Mr. Panaro!
"Hello, Jojo!"

:)

I think that was the first time I had seen Hugh since the closing performance of Lestat. (Or maybe the second time - ??) We didn't chat long - he was having lunch with his partner and some friends -  but we did exchange a hug, a kiss and some well-wishes.  It was really great seeing him again.

And then after picking up a sausage roll and a ginger beer, I headed over and up to The High Line (http://thehighline.org/). Again, it was a gorgeous afternoon, and the views of, on and from The High Line were just stunning and smile-inducing.  And the little picnic tables set up in the middle of The High Line - right above Chelsea Market - were the perfect setting to enjoy my English provisions. ;)

And then...

After wandering around the West Village and Washington Square Park for a bit - oh, and getting my hair cut too! - I met up with my friend, Eric, for dinner.  After wandering around a bit and pondering a couple of options, we decided to head up to Carmine's on the UWS. -Since it was Tuesday, the daily special was their amazing Rack of Lamb. Well, a Double Rack of Lamb with Roasted Vegetables. :)

As we were dining, a very familiar looking man walked in with a couple of friends who were also familiar-looking to me.  Hmmmm... After a while, I still couldn't think of his name, but I could think of the character's he's played: Charley Kringas, Ben, Ed Kleban... Lonny Price! And he was there celebrating his birthday with some of his close friends.  So...

On the way out, I stopped by his table... "I would hate myself if I didn't take this chance to wish Charley Kringas a Happy Birthday. So, Happy Birthday, Mr. Price."  He thanked me, asked me my name and shook my hand.

Needless to say, I was one very happy Musical Theatre Geek.  :)

Yes and no - all the dinners he prepares have my dietary needs in mind and he shops with me in mind as well.

We both do our own lunches.

My "problems" also come into play when eating out - where I used to pick lunch spots for good french fries, I now aim for spots with good salad choices.

My favorite lunch spot, our beloved Pickled Pig Pub lets me substitute sliced tomatoes for fries for a slight additional charge.

Thanks...but it's going to be at least $1,100.  I pretty much assumed around $1,000, but if it's going to be more than $2,000 (they still have to get and interpret the "code" from the computer in my car to find out why the "Service Engine Soon" light came on), it'll really hurt. :-\

Well, I actually stopped into my old standby, Chelsea Barbers, to get my haircut.  Alas, since the last time I had been there, their price for a haircut had gone up another $10.  Their last price increases had been in $5 increments.  This $10 one sort of caught me off guard. Ah, well. :-\

Think positive thoughts - the last time my Service light came on it was a clogged pollution control valve that cost less than $50 to fix.

On the other hand - have you checked with your credit union on rates for new car loans?

Well...I'm also hoping that that won't be necessary for quite some time.

Back after a very long evening.  The reading itself was two hours but then everyone was asked for their input, and then I was asked to stay after that to really have a detailed conversation.  Then when I got home I had to finish proofing so I'd be ready to talk in the morning.

Well, I hate to do it (no, really...I do!), but I must go to bed.  I'm cold, I'm tired and I have to walk to work in the morning...and it's supposed to be cold tomorrow, as well.

Good night, all!
