Well, you've read the notes, the notes whizzed by with a bang, and now it is time for you to post until the whiz bang cows come home. They're currently seeing a production of The Whiz.

TOD: When I was in Savannah to celebrate Johnny Mercer's birthday last November, I finally got to go to the ice cream shop Leopold's, owned by film producer I first met on a film back in 1978. (Eeek!) It's a family business, and Johnny used to go there when he was growing up and whenever he returned to Savannah. He is the one currently producing Captain Marvel (he just did The Wolfman) and I met up with him in LA when Greg and I were out there in Feb. I hope to be working on a project with him @ June.

His wife asked me what my favorite flavors were and I told her "dark chocolate and orange". Lo and behold, they had just created this flavor. It was sooooooo gooooood!

Favorite ice cream sandwich: No contest---the one we had on my last trip. They came from a place called MILK, and Peter and I had it at Umami Burger. We split one but I would have rather had one all on my own!

Today I was at Whole Foods and tried several gelato flavors that their gelato kid cooked up. One was a green apple soda one. I was hoping it would be like the yummiest gelato I'd ever had, a champagne sorbet at Giolitti's in Rome. Not quite, but pretty tasty.

I also tried a hanañero chocolate that was so hot it made me start coughing. It had a real kick that I wasn't expecting. He gave me a coconut sample to cleanse my palate. I was hoping it would be like a cayenne pepper dark chocolate one that our post house chef made once, but no...it was too hot for me!

How's ROOM SERVICE?  Haven't watched that one yet

"Room Service" was fun, if a bit stage bound. There's a young Lucille Ball to add to mayhem and an even younger Ann Miller as the love interest. Not top drawer, but a charming way to spend some time.

I do not like ROOM SERVICE. It was a Broadway play and then bought for films with the Marxes shoved into it, and for me they just don't fit at all.

AT THE CIRCUS is lots of fun. I also like GO WEST and THE BIG STORE, their other MGM features after AT THE CIRCUS though it's clear they're getting older and some of the shenanigans are a little tired.

Ice cream -- one of my favorite foods. Can't remember the first time I had it; I was probably a babe in arms still. (Mom started me on beef when I was six months old, or so I've been told, so ice cream was most likely not that far behind.)

When I was around 10 or 12, one of the special treats I can remember is getting a Matterhorn at Baskin Robbins. It was seven scoops of ice cream with whipped cream and nuts on top. Heaven. In the mix were always flavors with nuts in them or something crunchy for added texture: Jamoca Almond Fudge, Pistachio Almond Fudge, Pecan Praline. And something with a touch of alcohol, such as Dacquiri Ice. Of course everything melted together into a pool at the bottom of the dish, but that goo was part of the fun.

A few years back, I bought a double ice cream maker, so you can make two flavors at once (or one large batch of the same flavor). I've been able to experiment with my own ideas. Last year, I made a candied bacon-ginger ice cream and a mint-cocoa nibs ice cream (above), using mint from the back yard, among others.

Favorite store brands in recent years have included Horizon's organic chocolate chocolate-peanut butter cup and Haagen-Dazs' ginger five, which I can't find too easily. I'm not a big fan of American gelati, because the texture is too often greasy and slick.

There's an ice cream parlor in San Antonio called Brindles that makes an open faced ice cream sandwich that's quite wonderful. It's called Muddy Feet, and they spread cookie dough on the bottom of the dish, heat it in the microwave until it's warm and almost done, so you get a good doughy flavor. Then it's topped warm with ice cream that melts into it.

Of course I am not eating ice cream these days....however.....

One of the first ice cream bars I ate was a Popsickle....not really ice cream.

THEN one day when the truck came down the street, the little girl in front of me asked for a DREAMSICKLE.....so I asked for one, too.

It is still my favorite ice cream bar - called many different things....it is sherbert surrounding vanilla ice cream.

It true about it not being written for them, yet every time I've seen "Room Service" revived (about three times now), it's staged as if the main charaters were the Marx Brothers.

TOD:

I have no idea what my first ice cream was or what flavor, but it was most likely one of the local brands from back then--either Bryers or Abbotts.  My first favorite flavor as a youngen was banana, which could only be found at the Cow Tail Bar in Voorhees, NJ. Banana ice cream was also promised to me when I had my tonsils removed, but that promise was broken.

My first ice cream bar was probably an Abbotts ice cream sandwich.

Nowadays, if I buy store-bought ice cream, I'll go for Bryers (my favorite being the Triple Chocolate or Vanilla Fudge.)  Bryers seems to be the one ice cream that uses the least amount of preservatives and artificial ingredients.  I also like a couple of Ben & Jerry flavors, like Cherry Garcia or Chubby Hubby.  And Hagen Daz has just started selling something called Hagen Daz Five, which contains only five ingredients--the chocolate is delish!

Good morning, all! I stayed up too late last night reading M.F.K. Fisher's delightful Consider the Oyster. Early this morning I was having very peculiar dreams about alien takeover and violent chickens so that, when the alarm went off, it was so dark outside from the rain, that I slept in. My noisy neighbor was not home last night - I suspect he's in Canada with family for Passover - and his rather noisy afternoon yesterday with lots of banging around was probably his packing up to go. That means I've got a couple of quiet nights to relish this week.

A happy turn of events yesterday was a phone call from my friend at the Library of Congress, the one I had inadvertently upset during all of the LIFE BEGINS brouhaha a month ago. It was a very pleasant surprise and, now that the 840 madness is past, all is well.

Today is a WIZARD OF OZ day; I'd like to get through all of the remaining Act One scores today, so we'll see how that goes.

My father loved Rocky Road ice cream.

We had a deep freezer chest in our home.  My Dad would buy himself a gallon of RR, sneak it into the house, and hide it at the bottom of the freezer.

Didn't work.  My brother and I always knew where it was.

I've seen it done that way, too, and for me it just doesn't work. It's not funny. For me, the movie is not funny either. In fact, it's the first Marx Brothers film in their string starting with THE COCOANUTS that didn't make me laugh once. I prefer everything else they eve did (including the weak A NIGHT AT CASABLANCA and the weaker LOVE HAPPY) to it.

I spent this morning catching up on more world championship skating on YouTube taken from foreign broadcasts and one from someone's camcorder.

I began with Jeremy Abbott's short program. Very nice quality, lyrical skating and he landed all his jumps, a great improvement from his disastrous Olympic short program where he downgraded two of his three jumping passes to lesser moves. I thought he was a bit underscored.

Ice cream?  I have no idea what my firsts were.  The ice cream brands and palces of my childhood would be Carnation, Thrifty's (loved their Cherry vanilla), Skagg's Drugstore, and Baskin Robbins.  The drugstore soda fountains around me usually served Lily brand ice cream.

For birthday parties, we always seemed to have the rectangular carton of Neopolitan that was sliced.

But then I spent time watching bronze medal winner Laura Lepisto from Finland in both her short and long programs. If there is ANY doubt that judges are still holding up favored skaters who skate mediocrely even with this new judging system, Laura Lepisto is the poster child for this movement.

In her short program, she botched a double axel, a major move in any senior ladies competition, and her triple-triple combination was made up of the two easiest triples: salchow/toe loop. Yet, she scored third highest in the competition, three places higher than Rachael Flatt who landed her double axel and had a much harder triple-triple combination: flip/toe loop.

In the long program, Lepisto landed that same easy triple-triple combination and then skated to the other end of the rink and landed a triple lutz. And that was effectively the end of her long program because she doubled every other jump she had in her program. This long program which included only three triple jumps (the equivalent of what won the 1983 world championship when Roslyn Sumners won the title) won the bronze medal!

Now, Lepisto is a slim, lovely, lyrical skater. But to have no more difficulty in her program, and with no difficult transitions leading into DOUBLE jumps is an insult to current skating standards, and a slap in the face to skaters who completed seven or eight triples cleanly in their programs.

I looked at Rachael Flatt's long program (which was judged only the 9th best skate of the night!). Her triple-triple combination had a rocky landing on the triple flip so she did a double toe loop instead. Later on in the slow section of her program, she tried to fit in that triple toe lop that she didn't do in the combination, and she popped it landing only a single (poor decision). However, later in the program, she added a double toe loop to her triple salchow in the bonus area to make up some points she had lost earlier.

Still, this finished 9th in placement.

I am SO disenchanted with the current scoring favoring certain skaters no matter how poorly they skate (Yu-Na was also the beneficiary of favored scores when she fell on a jump and popped her double axel in the long program and she still WON the long program phase of the competition and won the silver medal overall.)

And, DR Jennifer, I haven't watched her programs yet, but from everything I've read, your Canadian top skater did clean programs in the long and short and didn't finsh on the podium either. I look forward to catching up with her programs either later today or tomorrow.

There were two "baby talk" anecdotes my mother used to repeat ad nauseum, one involving me, the other my eldest sister.  Evidently when I was quite young, still a toddler, and barely able to walk, while I was in my high chair I kept screaming "Reen! Reen!"  Of course no one had the slightest idea what I was talking about (strangely, that part hasn't changed despite my somewhat increased verbal acuity).  So anyway after about 15 minutes of this, my mother put me down on the floor and told me to show her "reen."  I crawled over to the refrigerator which was the old fashioned kind with the freezer on the bottom, opened up the freezer and pointed to the vanilla ice cream and pointed to it and screamed:  "Reen!"  Thus began my lifelong love affair with ice cream.  SLC had two great local parlors when I was growing up, Snelgrove's and VaLora's, both of which had delish chocolate and burnt almond fudge.

My sister's anecdote is funnier, IMHO.  She evidently went ballistic one day when she was 2 or so telling my mother she wanted to see "the hangers."  So my mother took her back to the closet and showed them to her, which only sent my sister over the edge into near hysteria.  Those weren't the hangers she wanted to see.  My mother was at a complete loss and my sister was screaming bloody murder for most of the rest of the day.  Several weeks later they went to SLC's Hogle Zoo and as my sister approached the monkeys, she pointed and exclaimed with glee, "Hangers!"

My father was a pharmacist, and when he was first starting out he owned his own drugstore in a small town in Ohio. It had a soda fountain, and he also served the ice cream. One time he made ice cream cones for my brother and me, and my brother decided it was a fine idea to turn his ice cream cone upside down and smear it all over the counter. (He was probably about 4.) Since I was about 2 and copied everything he did, I did the same. There were other customers at the counter, and I remember my father looking very embarrassed that we were his kids and quickly cleaning up after us. I don't know if we got punished later, but it is the last time I remember having ice cream there!

His store only lasted a few years. He was too generous and always helped out people who didn't have the cash to pay for their drugs but promised to pay it later, but never did, or else did some sort of trade. (It was a farm community.) You can only stay in business a short time at that rate.

While it would have been thrilling for the Canadian Cynthia Phaneuf to win a mdeal i'm sure she was more than thrilled with 5th place (and 4th in the long program). She was actually only 1 point from winning a bronze medal. With joannie Rochette dropping out of the worlds i don't think anyone expected much of cynthia. She was hoping for a top 10 finish. But i thought her long program was incredible. It was completely clean and very unexpected.  in retrospect after i was upset that she didn't get on thne podium. But at the time i watched it was just so thrilled for her.  She finished 12th at the Olumpics so this was pretty amazing.

But i think i sort of disagree with you about the scoring.  I was also disappointed that yu-na kim won the long program with her fall and missed jump. But if her program is that much harder and has a higher score potential if she's clean then that is a fact.

I saw rachel flatt's long program and didn't think it was that good. It was fine.  She just seems very young and unplished to me right now.  I didn't really think that most of the girls did that well. I would much rather see it play out like it did at the olympics where a lot of the programs were near perfection.

TOD -

Oh, my, where do I start?  I guess my ice cream addiction began when my mother worked the window at Larry's, the ice cream shop across the street from our home in Portland, Oregon.  Larry used a secret recipe that, apparently, went to the grave with him.  He made only vanilla and chocolate, except for during the holidays, when he made peppermint.  The story goes that Mom used to walk over there with me in my stroller and one day Larry told her that they'd be closed for a while, because he wanted to take a vacation and couldn't find anyone to work the store.  She said, "I'll do it!" and the rest is history.  We moved to Detroit in 1953, when I was 2 and my sister was 12.  She was pouting one day about leaving Portland and said, "And I never did have a Larry's malt!"  That's still our family expression for any kind of major disappointment.

I really find that this one of the worst batches of contestants they've ever had. There really is nobody competent left!  But that said there are some funny ones. It is funny watching the dating couple every time they have trouble. I have never seen a team who is strong and competitive yet when something goes wrong they turn on each other and are really poor sports!  I think the cowboys are sweet and funny and athletic. But i'm still unsure how bright they are. I really dislike the lesbians. They are unathletic and quite mean and snarky. And i cannot believe how many teams made stupid mistakes last night. So many teams didn't even check to see if all those coconuts/rocks? made it on their cart. That was crazy!  And god bless those cowboys. At least they were good swimmers. I was really hoping that we could get rid of the lesbians last night. I wanted them to finish last and for it to be an elimination. But i guess i'm habc def ghi klm nop qrs tuv wxyz blah blah and then we went and a  jkl kj and then one two three the and we wentappy that they did not finish last. However, there were some new flavor combos in my grocery aisle Saturday....and the one I've tried is Amaretto-Almond.  The Almond is actually a brittle with almond chips in it.   Tasty....but the brittle isn't something I usually eat (rough on the crowns, as it were).

Re: taking it out in trade, sometimes I wonder if I'm too much like my Dad.

Scenario #1: A friend of mine needed some cash when she was between film jobs. She does fun animal portraits so I commissioned her to do my 4 cats. She usually takes 1/2 the amount as deposit and the other half when you're happy with what she created.

So I gave her half to get her through Christmas.

Later she was still broke and asked me for the other half and promised me she would be working on it soon.

She's had many weeks where she wasn't working, and I commissioned it a year and a half ago! It sort of annoys me that I made the effort to help her and she didn't reciprocate. She is one of my best friends, and I've asked her about it once but don't want to continue and strain our friendship.

Scenario #2:  Our researcher on the Mercer film had a truck that died and couldn't get to work. So I loaned him my old car, and let him drive it for a few weeks to see if he'd like to buy it. After a month, we made a deal and he said he'd pay $2,000. After a few months, he paid me the first 1,000 and since he was now out of work, I said he could do some painting or carpentry or whatever he liked, at a very generous rate.

Several days he said he would be coming over but never showed. He finally did show up one day but I had already gone to work so Greg had to take the day to show him what to do. Together, they started to prep an outdoor building for painting.

He said he'd come back that weekend to paint, so we ran around getting all the paint and materials. But he never showed up. Didn't even call. I emailed him late in the afternoon to see if something had happened.

Well...he slept until after 11...and then had to go to Comcast...and then...and then...

So he hasn't been back, but occasionally I'll get a call from him saying he left his machete here and wants to pick it up. Then he never shows up!

Guess I'd better not make him mad when he DOES show up!

This is on top of Greg turning down several days of work to help this guy on a film he wants to make, and then the guy cancelled every time.

I think I am going to hire a professional painter.

Scenario #3: My assistant editor, whom I hired for Mercer when he was between seasons and hungry for work, was let go after working for public television for 8 years, writing and producing his series. I gave him some of the editing to do, changed his title to associate editor and got him a very good pay raise.

After Mercer was done, there wasn't much work and I had too much going on with The Closer, so I paid him to edit several sequences for the baseball film. It was worth it to me to pay him out of my own pocket so I could keep going on The Closer, but since my rate on the doc is so low, I was hoping the producer would come through, since the original budget called for an assistant. The producer came through and I had him write a check directly to my teammate, who would reimburse me once the check cleared.

He got the check immediately, but kept saying he would bring it over, then was too busy with all the other work that Greg had lined up for him to drop it by. Over a month later: "What's your address? I need to mail you a check and an invitation to my wedding".

I don't mind with him because at least I benefitted form it---he did a great job, and I will probably have him help on the online.

But I just have to ask myself: Is it me??? Am I genetically pre-disposed to being a door mat?

I think the ship has sailed on that, Amy.  She has neither fulfilled her obligation to you as a friend, nor has she fulfilled her "business" obligation in repaying the loan in any way.

This is a no-win scenario.

TOD"

I have no recollection of my first taste of ice cream. As a kid I never did care for strawberry ice cream, and vanilla was too dull. When we would go to an ice cream shop I would always go for the Chocolate Chip Mint.

For store bought ice creams I just love the many flavors of Ben and Jerry's, espcially Cherry Garcia.

Ice Cream seems to do bad things for my blood sugar so I don't have it much any more.

When I mentioned it to her I told her we're going to try to have a housewarming/birthday party for our little French boy/anniversary/my brother's birthday get-together in May and would love to have that hanging in the kitchen to balance out the one she did for us years ago of our ancient cat. I've left that open wall for it so it's looked off balance for a long time. I thought if I gave her a date...well, we'll see. And I'll post a picture of it if I get it!

Edi, that is wonderful to have tried to assist these people. You are not a doormat, you are just a person who cares. You may not be paid back by them, but you will be paid back (depending on your belief system) in karma, perhaps, or the afterlife, or just in knowing you did a nice thing.

Don't stop doing nice things, but looks like you may need to consider the outcome if the person does not remember what you did for them, so you don't get in a jam yourself.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Well, well, well...  Where to start?  ;)

"What was the very first flavor ice cream you ever had and do you remember the brand."

I'm guessing it was probably either Vanilla or Neapolitan (which, of course, is three flavors in one), and most likely Safeway's "Snow Star" brand.  I can still picture those signature blue cartons in the freezer.  My mom was also very fond of Spumoni too.  -On the other hand, my mom's least favorite flavor of ice cream is "chocolate".

"What was the very first type of ice cream bar you ever had and where was it from?"

My first ice cream bar memory is the classic Ice Cream Sandwich - vanilla ice cream sandwich'd between two chocolate cookies/wafers.  However, I still remember the first time I tried a Good Humor "Toasted Almond" bar from the neighborhood ice cream truck - I had just finish swim practice - that made me a fan for life.  -And I like the other "eclair" and "shortcake" ice cream bars.
Title: Re: THE WHIZ BANG WEEK

My first conscious memory of ice cream is vanilla, which they gave me when I had my tonsils out.  I probably had some before then, but that's my first actual memory.

Favorite all-time ice cream - the frozen vanilla custard stand at the old Ocean Park pier - if that counts as ice cream.

What is your favorite ice cream bar, favorite ice cream flavor, and of all the pre-packaged ice creams, which are your favorites?

-Tie between the aforementioned Good Humor "Toasted Almond", and a Dove "Dark Chocolate with Vanilla Ice Cream Bar".

-Chocolate anything. I like "texture": nuts, chips, chunks, swirls, etc.

-Ben & Jerry's "Phish Food", "New York Super Fudge Chunk", "everything but the..."

I've edited "Down on the Brandywine" and half of "Carrie Berry," from the 1902 WIZARD OF OZ and I'm taking a break to do some mending: I have a hole  in a pocket of the pants I'm wearing and it needs to be repaired. Then I will watch Kyle and Fish on ONE LIFE TO LIVE, perhaps take a walk in the rain and go back to the edits.

As Shirley Temple sings:
I love to walk in the rain
Look for me when it's stormy down some leafy lane and I'll be there
I love to walk in the rain
The lightning may be fright'ning but I love the rain so I don't care
I feel wonderful
When the skies above are thunder-full
I don't complain
And though it's fun in the sun
It takes all kinds of weather
When all's said and done, I love to walk in the rain!

And which ice cream parlors do you love?

I tend to like the most "local" one in the city that I happen to be in.

NYC - GROM (gelato), Cones (gelato), Ronnybrook Farms, Emack & Bolio's, Shake Shack
Philly - Bassett's, Capogiro (gelato)
Rock Island, IL (Quad Cities) - Whitey's, Lagomarcino's Confectionary
DC - Gifford's, Thomas Sweet, Frozen Dairy Bar
Chicago - Scooter's Frozen Custard
Fredericksburg, VA - Carl's Ice Cream (just Chocolate and Vanilla!)
Richmond, VA - Bev's Homemade

etc., etc., etc.

This reminds me that this morning whilst driving to work, I was behind a car that looked like it had red Hebrew letters on a white background, albeit the Hebrew looked like it was upside down.  I tailgated the car for a moment and suddenly realized it was actually white English letters saying "Alta" (the ski resort in Utah) against a red background.  Oy.

More TOD

DR Edi's story of her father's pharmacy reminded me of the drugstore near our house in Detroit.  It had a soda fountain that featured Stroh's (like the beer) ice cream and when a kid had a prescription filled, Pharmacist Hoffman gave you an Rx for an ice cream cone.  My dad and I often walked there on summer evenings and I always got a chocolate cone.

We also had the Good Humor truck in our neighborhood and my mom can still mimic our "Wai-i-i-i-it a second!" shout-out to the driver.  I remember the two-tone popsicles - raspberry/lime, raspberry/orange.

One time a guy who looked very poor came into my dad's store. He could not talk very distinctly, but my dad thought he was asking for "old clothes", so he went in the back of the store and gathered up a few of his clothes and brought them back to the guy. The guy got a little irate, and then motioned that he wanted to write something.

He wrote down "whole cloves". Apparently he'd just been to the dentist (if you chew on whole cloves it helps numb the pain). Typical Dad story, willing to give some stranger the shirt off his back, and he didn't even want it. LOL!

I've been tweaking the new Blu-ray back-up player, and I think I've finally got it the way I want it. It's taken me days to get things right, and I read up on all this stuff. I can't imagine how novices manage to set up new equipment.

I don't have an early memory of my "first" ice cream experience (and I didn't get my tonsils out until I was an adult), but growing up, my parents usually got the cheap store brand ice cream.  But as kids, ice cream was ice cream and it was all good. :D

I remember that I really liked the orange sherbert/vanilla ice cream combo and whenever the ice cream truck came around, I love the ChocoTaco.  Quite a few years ago, Dreyers or Breyers used to have a neapolitan chocolate...five different flavors of chocolate ice cream (dark to white) and it was delicious!  I haven't seen it in stores in years.

Now, the most frequent ice cream that I get is Dairy Queen's Blizzard (which isn't really ice cream, I know...but I like it) or Schwan's various flavors.  They come to our work every two weeks.

I've also made the mistake of loaning "friends" money when things were tight. Time passes; things get "untight" and they still don't pay you back. I'll NEVER do that again.

When I got in from a long lunch, I put in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (the 1950 film) and watched it this afternoon. I just wanted something light and REASONABLY entertaining. The film isn't all it could have been, but it's colorful and the songs are great.

We have a brand of ice cream in this area called Blue Bunny. Yep, a stupid name for an ice cream brand, but their chocolate is the very best packaged chocolate ice cream I have ever eaten. Nothing else in our local grocery stores even remotely matches the flavor and creaminess of Blue Bunny's chocolate.

I just finished watching CYnthia Phaneuf's free program. Very cleanly and tightly skated and CLEARLY superior to Laura Lepesto's. In fact, the only weaknesses I could discern in CYnthia's program was a lack of real transitions into and out of jumps. Her set-ups for the difficult triples were too long with no steps or moves prior to them, a must to add those extra points that put one on the podium. Her spiral was a trifle unsteady, too, but just a trifle. Overall, I liked it best of the ladies free programs which I've watched. I'll get to Yu-Na's, Ando's, and Asada's tomorrow morning most likely.

Back from the grocery store, where I did not buy ice cream, but I will continue "my life in ice cream..."

When I came to SW Ohio in the early 1970's I discovered Graeter's, which is still in business, and Elite's, which (sadly) is not.  Elite's was a Middletown family ice cream and candy business that had their plant and several retail locations around town.  Their dark chocolate raisin clusters were outstanding and their ice cream was the best - especially chocolate peanut butter.  They ceased operations at the end of 1988 and I'll never forget the bewildered look on DR Elmore's face when he arrived at our house after discovering their absence.  He'd promised to bring us dessert and had driven around town to all the likely spots, only to find them all closed.  I've never found another chocolatier who makes dark chocolate raisin clusters.

Found treasures department:  I'm pulling stuff out of storage closets to move to the new house and just discovered something I had totally forgotten I had.  I can't recall the specifics right now, but I have the most amazing posed photograph of my Uncle Pat (the one who made international headlines circa 1962 after being accused of being a Soviet Spy--about 10 seconds after my father, his brother, was promoted to Major General in the U.S. Army!).  He's seated, with white gloves on and clutching a briefcase.  It's a really arresting looking thing, and for some reason I remember Pat telling me it was taken by a son (nephew? cousin?) of Richard Avedon.  The photo is signed, but unfortunately got smudged somewhere along the line, so I can't read it clearly.  It really looks like an "Avedon," though, gorgeously rich black and white hues.  And it's BIG--probably 2 feet by 3 feet.  I'm going to have to do some research--I just Wikipedia'd (oy, a new verb), and Avedon's only son is a scholar of Tibet.

Today's word of the day reminds me of watching the late Anthony Minghella's Oscar acceptance speech, where he said:

"Thanks to all my family who put up with me being away for so long. My wife, who's taught me the meaning of the word "uxoriousness." "

And I assume we were not the only household to shout back at the screen something to the effect of maybe she could teach us the meaning of that word - had not a clue what it meant.  Of course, we did look it up and now know.

And of course Sondheim used it in "One Wonderful Day" in "Saturday Night." Well, he used "uxorious." So we have our fill of ways to use it.

It boggles my mind anyone can remember their first ice cream.  In reality is that your first recollection of having ice cream, or your parents where very contentious about what you ate as a baby? ;)

I made all my own baby food & the boys ate mostly healthy foods, yet ice cream was Bryan's 1st food.  A bit of Keith's vanilla soft ice cream.  The kid was teething, we were at the mall & Keith gave him a small taste to ease the pain of teething & to shut the kid up.  It worked ;D  We were very surprised the next time Keith got an ice cream cone & Bryan remembered & wanted some.  I guess ice cream was also Bryan's 2nd taste of food.

I thought that was a CREAMSICLE?

Because he's been rumored to be gay for years and constantly denied it? Suddenly he outs himself; it's either for publicity or something else is brewing. It was rather obvious he was gay when he lived in this building while he was doing LES MIZ many years ago. There were several rumors floating around about an epic musical's casting back in the 90s, so that was another clue.

I agree. It sounds like you are very generous. It is too bad that these people have let you down. Hopefully they will eventually come through. But i agree with DR MBarnum. Just make sure your generosity is not going to hurt you.

Yes. I have a friend who was born Jewish and though he's now studying for his doctorate in divinity from a Methodist university, he and his wife would have a Seder every year at their home. Not this year, however. We will have a mini-version at church on Thursday, but it's not the same (though the wine they pour is as sweet and sticky -- and not to my taste-- as it is as the Seder's I've had at temples in the past.)

Our DS Rob arrived from Michigan in time to have dinner with us and my cousin and his family have arrived at the retirement community from Georgia.  They are staying in a guest house there until they return to Japan on Friday.

How nice there is a guest house at the retirement community.  Have a nice visit with your family.

There are several, DR Jane.  My cousin and his family are in a nice 2 bedroom patio home and tomorrow my sister and her husband will stay for 2 nights in a studio before they move into our house when Richard and I leave for Easter weekend in Lima.

I forgot you would need to be there for Good Friday.  Will you stay in a hotel or is there a guest house for you?

We actually have to be there for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and decided it was silly to drive back and then go again for Sunday, so we're staying in a hotel.  Rob and Mary Linda will join us on Friday and on Saturday we'll visit with our niece, who's a Methodist minister, and her family.

When I went down, I decided I was in the mood for a classic, and then I spied on the shelf a film noir I have had in a box set for years, but being familiar with the movie, I hadn't watched it on DVD since I bought this set.

I'm talking, of course, of THE ASPHALT JUNGLE. Not the greatest transfer in the world. This was the best version of the film they could find? Of course, if I had had time, I could have listened to the (most likely) illuminating commentary by everyone's favorite film professor Dr. Drew Casper, and that might have explained why this kind of dirty and definitely scratched element was used for the transfer.

Anyway, the film is SO good. Sterling Hayden was never a great actor, but this is probably his best performance. Louis Calhern was nominated as Best Actor for THE MAGNIFICENT YANKEE in 1950, but he could have been up for this, too. The film was NOT nominated for Best Picture (MGM had FATHER OF THE BRIDE and KING SOLOMON'S MINES as their Best Picture nominees) though John Huston's direction and script were both nominated.

Next, I had time to watch an episode of THE CLOSER. This was the one where a man seeks sanctuary in a Catholic church and Brenda does everything she can to snuff the man out since he's the chief suspect in the deaths of two Mexican policemen.

This was also the episode that did away with Brenda's Priority Homicide Division and replaced it with Major Crimes Division.

A very enjoyable episode.

I just finished watching Jeremy Abbott's long program at the worlds. He had two falls: one on his opening quad (full rotation but couldn't land it) and a stupid botched DOUBLE axel (he did two perfect and gorgeous TRIPLE axels in combination). The rest of the program was as expert as his national championship program was and clearly the most difficult free program of ANY of the men. So I was OK with his finshing fifth overall this year.

Consistency and a handle on his nerves is obviously going to be what he needs to work on in the future if he continues to skate competitively.

The Big Scoop on Blue Bunny® Since 1913, the colossally creative artisans at Wells' Dairy, Inc.—the largest family-owned and managed dairy processor in the United States—have been hard at work putting all things chunky, chewy, rich and gooey into their ice cream.

The Blue Bunny® brand was born in 1935 after the Wells brothers held a "Name That Ice Cream" contest in the Sioux City Journal . A Sioux City man won the $25 cash prize after submitting the winning entry along with his rendition of the original Blue Bunny® character.

Today, ice cream aficionados throughout all 50 states and Mexico can choose from nearly 500 tantalizingly tasty Blue Bunny® ice cream flavors, frozen dairy desserts and delectable novelties.

Blue Bunny® Ice Cream - A Brief History of Ice Cream

The origins of ice cream reach back to the first centuries B.C. Yet, the ice cream recipe did not reach the New World until the 1700s.

Americans’ love affair with ice cream is centuries-old. The origins of the frosty treat reach back to the first centuries B.C., when, as the story goes, ancient Persians and Chinese stored ice to serve it with honey, rosewater or nuts. Furthermore, during Roman times, emperors sent their runners for mountain snow, which was then flavored with fruits and juices and enjoyed.

Legends about ice cream’s history abound: In the 13th century, Marco Polo brought the first ice cream recipe to Europe after his trip to the Far East, and the Italian royalties fell in love with the dessert. Italian Princess Catherine de Medici brought the treat to France when she married King Henry II. In England, Charles I paid his cook a handsome sum to keep the recipe a state secret.

Most of these tales cannot be supported. Yet, it is true that over time the ice cream recipe evolved and spread throughout the continent. In the 17th century, the dessert became publicly available in Europe, and it is believed that in the 18th century the recipe crossed the Atlantic with European settlers.

Official records in the New World indicate that presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson developed a sweet tooth for ice cream. By 1813, ice cream became a state dish and was served at the second inaugural ball for President James Madison. As restaurants became more popular in the 19th century, ice cream became a favorite indulgence. Ice cream parlors and soda fountains spread as well.

By the mid 20th century, America had tried ice cream cones, bars and sandwiches. As time went on and technology advanced, ice cream manufacturers offered more yummy novelties.

Ice cream became a symbol during World War II, when each branch of the military tried to outdo the others in serving ice cream to its troops. By 1943, the U.S. military was the world’s largest ice cream manufacturer, and later the Navy built its first floating ice cream parlor for sailors in the Western Pacific. When the war ended, dairy product rationing was lifted and America celebrated its victory with ice cream.

Today, ice cream continues to be an all-American treat. In fact, the Ice Cream Capital of the World® is in Le Mars, Iowa, where more ice cream is made by Wells’ Dairy than in any other city in the world. Vanilla and chocolate continue to be favorite flavors, and there is no sign that Americans’ love affair with the frosty treat will end any time soon

It's a celebration of freedom. And it can be a very good meal, if you have the right people cook it.

My friend Bonnie makes her gefilte fish with salmon and plenty of dill. The haroset is sweet and tangy. The matzo ball soup reminds me of a soup my mother used to make with cream of wheat.

I usually make a flourless chocolate cake, though I remember one year when I arrived with cake in hand, I handed it to Bonnie to go get more items from the car. It slipped right out of her hands onto the floor. The cats dove for the chocolate. It was a hilarious sight, even if it meant we were left a quickly made strawberry napoleon using matzo crackers toasted with butter and cinnamon plus plenty of whipped cream.

Blue Bunny is good, but Blue Bell Ice Cream, made in Brenham, Texas, is even better. The factory dates back to 1907 and the ice cream is heavenly. I have a pint of mint chocolate chip from them in the refrigerator now. Just the thing to end off the evening.

I adore Barbara Cook's "Vanilla Ice Cream."  I also liked Judy Kuhn's.

Of course, it was just called "Ice Cream" when Barbara sang it. At least, that's what the cast album and Playbill called it.

Hmmmm... But in the score - the original and the revival versions - it's titled "Vanilla Ice Cream".  Hmmm... As well as the "single" sheet music.

But on the OCR and the Revival CR, it's listed as "Ice Cream".  Hmmm...  *As well as on "Barbara Cook Sings Mostly Sondheim". Hmmm...

My first conscious memory of ice cream is vanilla, which they gave me when I had my tonsils out.  I probably had some before then, but that's my first actual memory.

Favorite all-time ice cream - the frozen vanilla custard stand at the old Ocean Park pier - if that counts as ice cream.

And now...

I need to do a bit more investigating and preparing for my for my friend's birthday dinner. 50th Birthday Dinner.  I actually went ahead and polled some "foodies" on Twitter - Frank Bruni, Robert Sietsema, Ruth Reichl, etc. - and, lo and behold, a bunch of them responded with their favorite birthday restaurants, so... I have a feeling we may be doing a "crawl" - in the rain, alas - and sampling various dishes from various restaurants tonight.

Laters...
That sounds like fun. Report the goods afterwards.

Or... We could end up in the fantastic East Side apartment of a childhood friend of his whom he happened to run into this afternoon who went ahead and hosted an impromptu dinner/birthday party for him.  Mesclun salad, roast leg of lamb, couscous, a pear and pistachio tart, two bottles of Bordeaux and a Guatemalan brandy.  Parfait!

So, why is it news?

Because he's been rumored to be gay for years and constantly denied it? Suddenly he outs himself; it's either for publicity or something else is brewing. It was rather obvious he was gay when he lived in this building while he was doing LES MIZ many years ago. There were several rumors floating around about an epic musical's casting back in the 90s, so that was another clue.

Ricky Martin was in Les Miserables during the second half of 1996. He started during the summer, and I think he was with the show for about six months.  My friend, Tamra, played Cosette opposite his Marius.

The Reuters story says he's writing his memoir, so it is about publicity.

Well, I guess it could be for publicity, but maybe he really just finally wanted to come out.  I know that he's been spending most of his time home in Puerto Rico - my ex-sister-in-law happens to live near his "compound".  Besides starting to write his memoirs, the timing of his announcement probably coincides with coming out to his family and preparing them for the inevitable rush of "spotlight" that will undoubtedly follow his "official" outing.  -And I'm pretty sure his family's Catholicism came into play too.

Hmmmm, tzimmes (or, if you prefer, tsimmis)... YUM!  I thought it was more traditionally served at Rosh Hashanah?  In any case... I remember coming across a recipe in "Gourmet" when I was in college, and I would prepare it quite regularly.  Hmmm...
