Hey, Barnum,

I gave you a bit of incorrect information yesterday. The starting time for the Bollywood music program is 12 noon on Friday, not 11am. If you're not going to listen live it doesn't make any difference but if you want to listen live it's at noon.

Good morning, all! Last night was the first night in several that I had no allergy problems so I took no medication to help me sleep. I spent most of yesterday working about the apartment in a drowsy haze. Outside of the idiot above me carrying on several times between 12:30 and 2:30 am - no sex last night, just occasional clog dances and a few loud thumps as something heavy landed on the floor - I slept quite well.

Today, I have some WIZARD OF OZ edits and little else since I'm taking a couple of days off from the two Victor Herbert scores. Now that I'm off ONE LIFE TO LIVE, I may spend some of the afternoon on the last disc of Season Two of BONES.

TOD:

I think it would be easier for me to pick out the Pixar films I like the least, namely MONSTERS, INC and CARS--I don't respond to these two as much on an emotional level as I do all the others.

Favorite song would still be Randy Newman's "You Got a Friend in Me".

I am already liking TOY STORY 3, based on what I see in the trailer...

TOD: "Ratatouille" was my favorite of the Pixar movies. Also enjoyed the two "Toy Story" movies, so I'll be seeing the third. And I thought "Up" had some great moments. I don't remember many of the songs from the films, other than Randy Newman's fine work on the "Toy Story" movies. Of course, there were the Jerry Herman bits in "Wall-E," and it's always pleasant to hear his music.

Off to visit my folks next week. I'd better make sure I can bring my own, if theirs is on the fritz. One more thing to add to the packing list. I know they have no cable and no Internet access. They don't really even understand what the Internet is.

Sad to say, my DVR/cable box had bit the dust. I worked with the service rep on the phone this morning for fifteen or twenty minutes, and it was just no go. I wonder what the odds are that my cable box would go out of commission the very DAY a new channel configuration would go into effect?

At any rate, after talking with the rep, I got cleaned up and drove to one of the cable company offices to switch out my old box for a new one. I could have scheduled for a technician to come do it, but I didn't even ask how many days that would be. I knew I had to have working cable for LOST, GLEE, IDOL (with Adam Lambert) tonight.

But I lost the two hour BROTHERS & SISTERS which I'll have to find on the net, I suppose (ABC doesn't have On Demand on my cable system).

And I lost last year's Tony Awards which were still on the DVR because I hadn't taken the time to put it on a DVD-R and edited the commercials. Maybe one of you nice folks out there who records and keeps the Tonys can offer a replacement?

I lost GRAN TORINO, too, but it'll be on again. No big deal there.

I really am excited about the return of GLEE tonight. I understand from reading some reviews that some of the outrageously awful plotlines from the first 2/3 of the season are now resolved and the show is heading off in more sensible directions. I can't wait to see that!

I will watch GLEE tonight even though it'll be 11 p.,m. before it's concluded. I can't wait for tomorrow to watch it.

As for the Topic of the Day...

"Finding Nemo"
"Toy Story"
"Wall-E"
"Up"

And even though it's not the greatest movie, I did have a wonderful time watching "Monsters, Inc.". I was doing a show at the time, and practically the whole cast and crew rushed out after the show to catch the last showing on the first day it was in the theatres. Fun, Fun, Fun!

Ithink all of the Pixar films are unique and fun; I've had to review many of them, so I've seen them all, some quite a few times. MONSTERS, INC. is my least favorite, but it's still so MUCH better than most of the animated features out there that it seems unfair to classify it any other way except as a good movie and not a great one.

I don't Pixar has really had a failure yet.

With my DVR shot last night, I had to rely on the DVD recorder with a hard disc drive and connection to analog cable to record last night's CASTLE and DAMAGES. I should be able to pick up DAMAGES on HD On Demand, so I can likely delete that analog version without watching it, but I didn't want to take any chances on missing it. The show is nearing the end of its season, and has been sensational.

DR Ginny, how do you and Richard feel about a trek to Canton, OH?

The Canton Comic Opera Company, the only company in the world dedicated solely to the preservation and performance of American operettas, has just completed a restoration of the original 1903 musical extravaganza THE WIZARD OF OZ by Paul Tietjens and L. Frank Baum.  The work will be performed on July 10, 2010 at the historic Canton Palace Theatre in Canton, Ohio.  The fully staged production will feature a cast of 40 and the original orchestrations performed by a 30 piece orchestra.  This will mark the first production of the original 1903 THE WIZARD OF OZ with orchestra in over 80 years.  In addition, a special concert of cut and interpolated songs from THE WIZARD OF OZ 1902-1909 will be presented on July 9 featuring a lecture by Larry Moore on the history of THE WIZARD OF OZ and our restoration.

The Canton Comic Opera Company's 2010 summer season also includes a concert production with full orchestra of Victor Herbert's 1909 operetta THE ROSE OF ALGERIA on August 14 & 15.

when Dame May Whitty came to MGM to work on MRS MINIVER there was some confusion among the crew about how to address her.....everyone was kind of on his own....

One of the many assistant directors finally took the bull by the horns, so to speak, and said to her:  "Okay, Dame, we'd like ya to stand over on this side."

Does the book mention that it's not the current Majestic Theatre but one at Columbus Circle, built in 1902 and torn down, I believe, in the 1960s? The dates are good; the show left the Majestic in September 1903 and BABES IN TOYLAND moved in the first of October.

Defend away, and I'm sure he's a very nice chap in real life.  That, however, doesn't mean he has a clew about Blu-Ray, transfers, or images, and if he's one of the people who jumped on the problematic Lord Of The Rings transfer bandwagon (I'm fairly certain every one of these people check out the Internet daily to see what the buzz is) then I cannot take him seriously.

"When She Loved Me" is my favorite song from a Pixar flick.

And though not original, I like Robbie Williams' "Beyond the Sea" over the closing credits of FINDING NEMO.

Another Joanne Woodward opus.

Topic of the Day:  Of the Pixar movies, I think the only ones that I haven't seen are "Ratatouille," "Cars" and "Up" (although I did buy "Up," I just haven't watched it yet...rehearsals, you know).  I've loved them all. :D

Favorite Pixar songs are "You Got a Friend in Me" and "When She Loved Me."

For more information and tickets visit http://www.cantoncomicoperaco.com

Congrats, Larry!  I wish I could go!

I watched (and deleted) "Brothers & Sisters."  I also have the 2009 Tony Awards.  But I recorded them to DVD on the XP speed, so there are three discs. :)

I think I might still have last year's Tonys either on my dvr or Tivo, DR Matt.  If you are in no hurry for a copy, I'll make us both a copy sometime this week. (though I might have to use two discs to copy it to...)

I'm in no hurry at all, DR Dan. I would love any kind of copy, but since I was obviously in no big hurry to transfer my own DVR copy to DVD-R, you can do it when you find you have the time and inclination. I would be very grateful.

What a day I've had! Gad, what a day!

Well, let's see. When I went downstairs, the DVR/cable box was finished setting itself up. I turned it on, and a momentary picture with sound and then the picture flashed off. I kept the sound but no picture. It kept doing this over and over. Each time I'd turn it off and cut it on, I'd get a  momentary picture then it would go to black but with sound. I checked all of my connections. I swapped out the HDMI cables in case there was a handshake issue with them. Same problem.

Naturally, I called customer service again. They sent out a rep. We finally figured out that my HDMI switcher was interferring with the picture. If I took the HDMI straight into the TV, everything was fine. So now I know I can't use the switcher with the cable box. I'll have to go directly into the receiver with it. Irritating but at least it's functional now and I'll swap things around better tonight after I get my work project finished.

Then I watched THE FUGITIVE KIND. I agree, not Williams at his best. The story is deficient though I can see why the language meant so much to him in portraying both the beauty and ugliness of the South of his youth.

Anna Magnini is so uncomfortable speaking English that though there is power in her performance, it might have been even more powerful with a different actress. I imagine Maureen Stapleton must have been chewing nails seeing Magnini doing the part she played on the stage while she played a much smaller role.

I thought Brando was good and hit just the right pitch to his performance (I was expecting something a lot more florid), Woodward over the top but believably Southern.

The one-act plays I didn't get to, but they'll be what I watch when I go back downstairs.

DR Elmore - in the "weird coincidences" department, I've just started reading the latest installment in Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy mystery series, The Last Illusion.  It's July, 1903, and Molly's Patchin Place neighbors take her to the Majestic to see The Wizard of Oz.  I just read this while having my first cup of coffee this morning...

I'm slowly catching up with the series.  When I'm done dreading "Dreamers of the Day" I'll begin "Danny Boy".

DR Jane - I've thought of trying to put together a "Molly Murphy Walking Tour" of NYC.

That sounds like fun :)

I find understanding in the strangest places:

Fletcher came over to me, put his paw on my knee and started his "my food bowl is empty" bark (this followed by a circular dance when I got up to check). Unfortunately, we are out of food, and won't have more until I pick up Woody at the store at 6PM. I picked up the empty 30 lb bag and had Fletcher watch as I shoke it over his bowl and gave him "sorry hand motions". He gave me a frustrated look, and then went and flopped down for a nap.

The Rondo Hatton Horror Awards (http://www.rondoaward.com/) have been announced.

DR Jrand might be interested to see that Sammy Terry is honored this past year as a midwest legend.  Terry brightened up my living room many a fine Saturday night/Sunday morning hosting a horror film.  I ate many White Castle burgers, fries, and onion chips watching his ghoulish antics.

Also, there is HHW interest in that one of the nominees for "Best Soundtrack or CD" was Kritzerland's "Empire of the Ants".

I read the review and frankly, once again, I have no idea what he's going on about - I have a great TV, a good Blu Ray player and I simply do not understand anything he's saying - I haven't seen it all yet, but he complains about the TITLES and I certainly have watched those and they certainly look just fine.  They always do this "casual viewer" malarky - what is HE but a casual viewer.  What did he do for a living (or what DOES he do) prior to "reviewing" DVDs and now Blu Rays.  What makes him an expert?  How does he know what DNR is (other than having read about it) or edge enhancement or any of these other terms they so love to bandy about.  I'll tell you - he read about it on the Internet, maybe from Robert Harris, maybe from others.  When these people all use the exact same phrases in every review (and I mean ALL these people), then I'm sorry, it's just like a bunch of people going onto the imdb, reading misinformation, and then all using that same misinformation in their writings.

No, I suspect I am more the "casual viewer" in mind - I usually get caught up in a film's theatricality and wouldn't notice many of the "minor flaws" unless they were an obvious distraction. I think the reviewer is considerate to note that flaws he may find distrating would probably not diminish my viewing pleasure at all.

I usually am always reading a book. But i have not read anything in around 3 weeks (since i banged my head). AT first my head was sort of hurting and i did not feel like reading. And then i couldn't find anything i wanted to read.

Thankfully i just got 2 books from the library from series i've read. I find those are the easiest ones to get into.

On the subject of Joanne Woodword:

I didn't quite understand all the praise about her until I saw her on stage in a production of "Ghosts" and I now try to see everything she does. I won't say that all of her performances are gems, but I found her beyond belief in "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge," especially in the concluding scene where she's trapped in a car and somehow in a few glances sums up her whole character. It's one of the best performances I've ever seen.

I swear, the reasoning for the Promises' additions makes me want to vomit on the ground.  I'm so sick of these amateurs - Fran's character needed work on her arc?  Do you suppose Neil Simon, Billy Wilder, or Bacharach and David even USED the word arc back when they wrote the show?  No one used that stupid word, but thanks to the "gurus" who blather on about writing and screenplays and now books, that's all we hear - arc, journey - what a load of hooey.  There was nothing wrong with the character in 1968 and there's nothing wrong with her now, and the inclusion of those two songs is beyond stupid and hardly gives Fran more of an arc - it gives her more to sing, certainly, but those songs don't do anything for her character.  This show was a hit, ran 1200 performances, and unfortunately the revival is being done by a creative team who thinks they know better.  They don't.

Yes, I'm coming to see the Friday night performance on May 7th.  I leave Saturday.  If Mother's Day is that Sunday, that's the 9th not the 10th.  Still Friday is way before Sunday, so hopefully you can come up, at least to have some dinner or something.

I know it is the 9th-don't know why I typed it.

Bruce the theater is a seven hours away from us, without stops. I wish it were closer.

Watching Lord Of The Rings part one and it's a gorgeous transfer and is making me even more annoyed at the armchair experts.  You know how you can tell just how unknowledgeable they are?  They all say that certain sequences in the film look great, but that others look less so - well, what do they think, someone sat in the transfer room and applied some sort of something to certain scenes but not others?  I suspect if they went back and saw these in theaters they'd see just what's on this Blu and Ray.  If there were DNR and edge enhancement it would be apparent and visible in every single shot, but to read these wags, many scenes play perfectly.  And I'm saying, they all play the way they should play.  Waxy faces?  Are they joking?  On the older actors you can see every nook and cranny, on the younger ones you see smooth complexions with makeup on.  There is a lot of CGI in this film and that will sometimes render scenes a little softer than usual - it happens in every film that's loaded with CGI and live action combined.  And some shots are filmed with various filters and those look as they should.

Arc is a dreadfully overabused term. In the case of "Promises, Promises," it seems to want to make the show into a show that it isn't/wasn't/doesn't need to be. The story is about the man, whose name I forget, not about Fran. It's like wanting to beef up Anna Karenina's husband's character because he doesn't get enough stage time/page time.
Title: Re: THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A DAME MAY WHITTY
Post by: John G. on April 13, 2010, 06:39:08 PM
Of course, the producers of this revival may want to make "Promises" about Fran because Sean Hayes isn't strong enough, but that's not the fault of the authors.

So, every year there is the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). http://ragbrai.com/ (http://ragbrai.com/)

It's starting in Sioux City this year. There are thousands of people who ride across the state on bicycles.  It lasts a week. Anyway, the hotel rooms in town were gone the day the announcement was made that it starts here, so residents are asked to host riders.

My brother has friends from Illinois who do the trip every year.  They have a bus, and tents etc.  So he asked if I'd mind them camping in my yard.  After I said yes, I found out there are 25 people in their group!!!  Then a couple friends asked if they could camp here too. I figure what's the difference between 25 and 30, so.... on July 24, there will probably be close to 30 people camping in my yard, grilling out back and having a few beers.

It should be a blast.  Plus it will be a huge incentive for me to get the rec room in the basement totally finished.  It won't take much, but if the weather turns bad, I'll need a place for 30 people to go.

There will also be a big free concert and party downtown.  There are vendors of all sorts and they will all want to dip their tires in the Missouri river as is the tradition (at the end of the ride they dip a tire in the Mississippi).  So while some of the group will likely hang out here, the others may be out riding around on their bikes, going to the concert etc.  So I won't really even be entertaining

Yes. But with the layout of the house, I can shut a couple doors and separate the area where the cats will be from the doors to come in and out for the bathroom. And I'll shut the door to the bedroom where the cats have food, litter and their toys.   It will be fine

I went down and watched the three Tennessee Williams one acts which are also a bonus feature on THE FUGITIVE KIND DVD. Ben Gazarra and Lee Grant are in the first "Mooney's Kid Don't Cry." The second is "The Last of My Solid Gold Watches" with Gene Sacks in a supporting role. The third and most famous is "This Property Is Condemned" with Zina Bethune.

Then I started fiddling with my cable box/DVR. I didn't need to fiddle for very long. For some reason, I guess it just needed a period of adjustment (a Tennessee Williams reference) because it's now working flawlessly. But, oh boy, those new channel locations are going to be a ROYAL PAIN to put into my head. I had all my favorite places memorized, and none of them are in the same locations any more.
