Title: THE OPENING SENTENCE
Post by: bk on April 25, 2010, 11:58:52 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had an opening and a sentence, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently working on their twenty-third opening sentence.

Good morning, all!

DR vixmom, Im Westen nicht Neues is the original German title for ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. I did speak too soon, though; the neighbor had a rather noisy exit around 1 am this morning. I don't think he came back last night.

So, I am off for some lab tests, followed by some OZ edits and more writing about Victor Herbert. I have little else planned today.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to DR Jennifer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TOD:

Having written the Basil Rathbone book, I am (of course) partial to those films.

I also enjoy the Hammer Films version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES with Peter Cushing and MURDER BY DECREE with Christopher Plummer.

But, my all time favorite Holmes movie is WITHOUT A CLUE, the spoof with Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley.  It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

TOD:

Another vote for Hound of the Baskervilles - the story and the movie.....all versions, the Rathbone, the Hammer, AND the one written by DR CP - all have interesting things to recommend them.

I also like THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and Jeremy Britt in the television version.

Good morning!

Nice weather, so I had a nice walk. It was great to be out in the fresh air this morning, and my back gave me no problems at all on the walk. (I could tell I was lugging around a few extra pounds gained by not exercising last week.)
Title: Re: THE OPENING SENTENCE
Post by: Matt H. on April 26, 2010, 06:45:57 AM
There is still some tenderness present in my lower back, so I did a very easy workout this morning. At least it was SOMETHING to get back into the swing of exercising. But when I get downhearted about something (like my back issues), I do tend to eat, and that was the problem last week. Hopefully, with my back feeling so much better, I won't need to feed my face so much this week.

A free day again today. Doesn't look like there will be any UPS deliveries (I'm certainly not expecting anything.) The FedEx truck just drove by without stopping so that means no CBS/Paramount TV box sets today either.

As for tonight's TV, CASTLE is a rerun, but at least CHUCK is back with a new episode and '24' continues on with its last season. DAMAGES is now gone, but NURSE JACKIE has begun well, and I'm enjoying it. Paul Schulze makes any show better with his presence.

As for what I'll watch today, I have last night's BROTHERS & SISTERS (which I heard was a very good episode) and the second of last week's 30 ROCK episodes. The first one was frankly terrible, so I'm hoping the second will be stronger.

The next Joan Crawford movie from the Archive collection is ABOVE SUSPICION which I've never seen. That may be either this afternoon or tonight. I want to continue watching season four of BONES, too, which I have greatly enjoyed revisiting.

TOD

Sherlock Holmes has been very good to me in my career and I am also something of an expert, having pored over the entire Canon many times.

Favourite stories:

Hound of the Baskervilles
Sign of Four
Valley of Fear
The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton
The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax
The Problem of Thor Bridge
The Adventure of the Creeping Man
The Man with the Twisted Lip
The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge

Favourite Films:

my own HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES ('83) - Ian Richardson as Holmes
THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES ('39) - Basil Rathbone as Holmes
STUDY IN TERROR - John Neville as Holmes
MURDER BY DECREE - Christopher Plummer as Holmes
THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES - Robert Stephens as Holmes

TV

Jeremy Brett is hands down the best Holmes on Television (bearing in mind, I've never seen Douglas Wilmer's performance) and his portrayal is for, my money, the best Holmes EVER...because he is not at all afraid to make Holmes at times, thoroughly dislikeable, as he could often be.

STAGE

CRUCIFER OF BLOOD by Paul Giovanni
THE EBONY APE by Charles Edward Pogue

I have a sort of funny JMK=Jennifer story, from the "old days" at the label which must not be named.  They had occasional chat-fests, like we used to, moderated by Mr. David Levy.  I used to sign on as JMK, and David invariably referred to me as Jennifer, though I repeatedly told him I wasn't.  So I guess Jennifer could be my nickname.

Currently at the Montreal Airport (Pierre Elliot Trudeau) enjoying the free wi-fi. I got here two hours a head of time. Checked in, went through security, and then customs all within 15 minutes I was shocked.

I was also amazed at the technology there is now at this airport. I checked a bag. Brought over to the conveyer belt for the luggage. The scanned my ticket and then the bag and the conveyer belt start to move!. Then went I went through customs they showed a photo of my bag and was asked if that was mine. A wow factor but also scary.

Murder By Decree (I think Christopher Plummer and James Mason was one of the best Holmes and Watson)

The 7% Solution (Nicol Williamson. Love the story an original)

The Hounds of the Baskerville (Peter Cushing as Holmes and Christopher Lee as Baskerville)

I remember seeing The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and sort of enjoying it but I think it was the badly edited version.

And the Basil Rathbone's Holmes that wasn't updated to the 40's when the movies were filmed. Don't remember the name of the film a the moment

TOD - You're asking the wrong member of our household about SH; Richard and Rob are the real fans.  I've watched some with him, but never read any of them on my own.  I was pleased when Rob said he wanted my dad's 2 volume complete Sherlock Holmes for his shelves.

There is a series of novels by Laurie R. King (http://www.laurierking.com) in which the sleuth, Mary Russell, is an associate of Holmes.  Maybe I'll add those to my want-to-read list.

DR Laura - RE: Your theatre seats - I suggest that you go ahead and relinquish your seats. Just have the two couples move in one seat closer to the center so that they're sitting next to each other.  Then you and DR Laura and/or your DH can sit on each side of the two couples - the two couples between you - and then you can lean over and talk to each other. And make sure to talk about how generous it was of you to offer up your seats for them.  Oh, and pass programs, notes and refreshments too.

I found rob and amber to be smarter. I find the cowboys to be good physically and occasionally mentally. But i would not consider them overly bright. Although they did surprise me on one task last night.

Btw, i did not have any cake yet. But my mom made a chocolate cheesecake that is creamy. Hopefully it will be good.

Apparently (i just found this out) i am having a bunch of people come over after dinner to watch hockey and eat the cake.

I wish someone would have told me, since i'm not really a hockey fan and would rather watch DANCING WITH THE STARS.  But it's a big game (the canadiens maybe final playoff game).

::)

I did have time this morning to watch last night's BROTHERS & SISTERS before we headed out to lunch. I wasn't all that high on the show. The secrecy thing is SO stupid about this show. Sarah gets a pregnancy scare and is determined to keep it a secret from the potential father? I don't get it. I don't care what his immigration problems are, he deserved to be kept in the loop, especially if she loves him as she says she does.

Now we see Justin considering returning to active service as a medic, and what do you want to bet he keeps THAT from Rebecca until the last possible minute?

Marion Ross did a fantastic job acting dementia with her character last night. Brilliant performance.

My favorite SHerlock Holmes story of all-time is "The Speckled Band." It was also well done for TV in the Jeremy Brett version.

Favorite Holmes movie is and likely always will be THE HOUSE OF FEAR even if the story has been updated to the 1940s. It's a brilliant mystery in the vein of TEN LITTLE INDIANS, and I love Rathbone's performance in this.

As for other Holmes films, I do like Peter Cushing's HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and both A STUDY IN TERROR and MURDER BY DECREE with Holmes against Jack the Ripper.

I love the production of THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, but it is too smug for its own good. Something about the tone Wilder has injected into it that doesn't quite sit right with me.

DR Michael Shayne,

Basil Rathbone did two Holmes period films, both released in 1939: HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. I prefer the latter to the former, but they're both superb productions.

When I got in from lunch, I immediately began a BONES marathon with two episodes. The first was that one we were discussing last night with the murder on the aircraft. Excellent mystery, but I remember when it was first aired, I guessed the wrong murderer thinking it was, ..., well, whom they suspected right before the UV light identified the real killer.

Title: Re: THE OPENING SENTENCE

The second one with the bones found in the tree was a good mystery, too. The victim (whom we see only in photos) was a real hunk, and I wish he had gotten to be on camera in flashbacks or in some way other than as a corpse. He was FINE.

I remember guessing the mother when the show first aired, obviously wrong but not a poor guess at all.

I have one more BONES episode on this second disc in the Blu-ray set, and I'll likely watch it when I go back down. I also have last night's THE TUDORS and I want to watch 30 ROCK also before I settle in with CHUCK tonight around 8:30.

Back from some lunch, some Fed Ex (in the who knew department - Kinko's is no longer Kinko's - it's Fed Ex Office - and the flagship Studio City store is being cut in half - guess the glory days are gone and for obvious reasons - highest prices in town being first, and lousy service being second), picking up packages (my forty free paperback books have arrived, which means the hardcovers should be only a few days away), doing other errands and whatnot, and trying to straighten out a few things re my books on Kindle.  The Kritzer books should finally show up this week.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night, and went to sleep.

Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.  "Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars."

"What does that tell you?" Holmes asked.

Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.
Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo.  Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant.  Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.  What does it tell you?"

Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. "Watson, you idiot. Somebody has stolen our tent!"

I think that the only Sherlock Holmes movies that I've seen were "The 7% Solution," "Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother" and the new Robert/Jude movie.

I liked "Smarter Brother".  We considered naming Sherlock Microft (the older smarter brother) but too few people know who Mycroft is.

I guess my favorite Sherlock Holmes story is "Silver Blaze" which is Sherlock's official name, or would be if we had taken the time to register him.  "Silver Blaze" is known for the quote "curious incident of the dog in the night-time"

Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): "Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
Holmes: "To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
Gregory: "The dog did nothing in the night-time."
Holmes: "That was the curious incident."

I ate some cheesecake earlier, because i don't really like eating dessert late, especially when i'm already full.

I'm the same way.  I have even ordered dessert before dinner at restaurants.  Not too often, mostly I take the leftovers home to eat the next day.

Joshie is rubbing all over the keyboard. I guess he trusts me enough to sit in my lap again.

When I went down, I watched the last BONES episode on disc two. It was the fun episode with Booth and Brennan joining the circus. Really enjoyable.

Oh, lord, I don't even know what this is about, but if that sour Joe Caps is involved, it can't be good.

Next, I watched THE TUDORS from Sunday night. Good gracious, did Lady Rocheford also have a love affair going with Thomas Culpeper? That's the first I ever heard of that!

Then I watched the second of last week's 30 ROCK episodes. Marginally funnier than the first episode, but the show has been left so far in the dust this season by THE OFFICE, GLEE, and particularly MODERN FAMILY that it's not even funny.

Nice to have CHUCK back tonight, and some of it was indeed lots of fun. So glad all the drama with Chuck and Sarah is over even if the writers are now going to have to leave their comfort zone to come up with a new plot. They've been milking that one for almost three years.

And I concluded my evening with tonight's '24.' What a predicament to have Jack Bauer now being hunted by his friends AND his enemies. I have to say they've done well to makes the last half of this season really first rate and now different from previous seasons. He's never been hunted by everyone that I can remember.

I did get another review copy today - the five film OSHIMA'S OUTLAW SIXTIES from Criterion. Again, it doesn't come out until May 18th, but since there are five films in there, I guess I'll work on the Blu-ray of WALKABOUT tomorrow, and then I can take my time with this latest big box set from Criterion.

Well, there is no one here to play with, so I guess I'll just head downstairs and go to bed.

Good night!

Good Evening!

A couple of hours ago, I headed down to New World Stages for a special performance of Seth Rudetsky's (http://sethrudetsky.com/) "Deconstructing Broadway: The Good, The Bad & The Headachey".  In a word, it was "A-MAH-ZING!".

It was a benefit performance for Only Make Believe (http://www.onlymakebelieve.org/index.php), an organization which brings the Joy of Theatre to children with chronic diseases and disabilities.  A very worthwhile cause. *I actually won the tickets via Twitter for tonight's event.

What was really cool - or "kewl" as they like to say nowadays - was that that Betty Buckley was his special guest tonight.  She's currently in White's Lies which is also at New World Stages, but since her show was at 8:00, and the benefit started at 7:00, she was able to stop by beforehand to help Seth "deconstruct" as well as sing "He Plays the Violin".

*An added bonus: Before they headed out for their show, I ended up sitting next to Ms. Buckley's co-stars, Peter Scolari and Tuc Watkins. And Tuc Watkins' biceps.

For lunch i went to costco and had their hamburger for the first time. I have to say it was not for me. IT was really thick. It tasted okay i just didn't really like it.

Interesting...the Costcos here in Washington that I've been to don't have hamburgers.

Do they have that Chicken-Cheese-Pizza-Stromboli Thingy? -I believe that's what it's called. ;)

The cake with dinner was a delicious brownie with vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate and caramel sauce. Very good!

So... Was it a cake? or was it brownie?

;)

How big is the band?

Well...it's only three pieces:  piano, electric bass and drums.  We were supposed to have also had an upright bass and a sax but the sax player was a high school student who backed out because she had to concentrate on her finals and I think that the upright bass player just quit. :P
