Title: EXPECTATIONS
Post by: bk on November 28, 2010, 11:19:21 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had expectations that naturally were not met, and now it is time for you to post until the expectant cows come home.

Hello, everyone.

I woke up with a sore throat again and spent the day watching old Sherlock Holmes movies. I don't have the sinus thingy that DR Jose and so many others have--just some other sort of virus. Hopefully, it'll be short-lived.

Good morning, all! Thank you, DR Ben, for the vibes! I have been outof bed since 6:30, and I am all packed and ready to go. My flight isn't till 4pm, so I'll leave here around 1pm. JoAnn told me this morning that Tom is back, so that's a good reason to get the hell out of Dodge.

I slept poorly last night, partly because of the anxiety about the flight and partly because Randy and I have not spoken since he returned on Saturday night. We've been angry at each other before, and I hope we'll get through this one. Luckily he's married to JoAnn and I adore her, so I really want to do nothing to affect my relationship with my sister-in-law and my nephew Matt. This round of fighting is much less worse than the one we had in 1974 - I still cringe over some of my behavior to him then - but I doubt either of us has matured since 1974!

So, this morning, I need a trip to the Post Office to send back a carton of things I don't need to carry with me, and I will go to the cemetary to see Mom, Dad, and my Uncle Bob who died this year. My cousin Tom is also buried in the same area. I'll also stop by the graves of Sam Lato, who died at the age of 19 in a car wreck in 1965, and Mike Taulbee, who died at the age of 21 in 1979.

I'll stop back before I leave today.

Keep those travel vibes coming!

Regarding Leslie Nielsen, here is a short excerpt from my book:

Another time that I was with a publicity client in the green room at the Robert Q. Lewis
radio show, I chatted with Leslie Nielsen, who was also guesting that day. This was
long before he reinvented himself as a comic actor by appearing in Airplane.

Nielsen was under contract then to Universal, doing episodic television
and “B” movies…and he was very unhappy about it. “I sold out my
career for money,”
he said. “I have nobody to blame but myself."

Maybe Nielsen wasn’t doing the kind of roles he wanted, but at least
he was working steadily, which is more than you can say for most actors.

You see and hear some very interesting things in green rooms.

====

Things (and careers) certainly change, don't they?

Yes DR JMK - I am using EBATES and getting money back on my EBAY wins.

As DR JMK said.....just log in through the EBATES site, which is easy to do.

I asked about how you got money for me joining the thing, but I didn't see your response, so I joined without using you as a reference......

My Frances Farmer book has shipped and should be delivered tomorrow, I shall look for your name to be mentioned......and probably taken in vain.

I always enjoyed Mr Leslie Nielsen's performances, so I shall mention one that is probably not his best remembered:

Mr Richard Manley and the Carroll Baker version of HARLOW.

TOD: Of course, I remember Leslie Neilsen fondly from his AIRPLANE and POLICE SQUAD/NAKED GUN comedies.  But I think I first became aware of him as Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War guerrilla fighter, known as THE SWAMP FOX, that was anthologized on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, back in the early sixties.  I also love him as the charming bad guy in THE SHEEPMAN, that starred Glenn Ford.

TOD:

What I enjoy most about Mr. Leslie Nielsen is how he took advantage of his AIRPLANE transformation and forged a whole new career for himself.  He thrived in this later years, which is quite an accomplishment in show biz.

Favorite performances:
AIRPLANE
POLICE SQUAD (TV Series)
THE NAKED GUN movies
FORBIDDEN PLANET

I guess my question would be WHY produce such a thing?  Money, I guess.....tourist trade.....I've never met a SPIDERMAN fanatic who had more than $20 in the bank.

I've been quite the skeptic about this one since I first heard about it and followed the horror stories that have been leaking out about its problems and runaway budget and the director to whom money was no object.  But over the past few weeks, as I seen the clips and read the articles that gave some idea about what Julie Taymor was trying to create, I have to admit that I am more than intrigued and I'm hoping that this wont turn into a total disaster.  While I still worry that if this show turns into a runaway success that it will come to define theatre to its audiences (and to producers and theatre owners who will smell cash in huge circus spectaculars), I do admire its scope and vision.

Thanksgiving was very nice for me at my sister's home--lots of family and food and fun!  But the rest of the weekend was busy.  I decided on the last minute Thursday night to have Stanley Steemer come on Friday afternoon to do my carpets (I was amazed I was able to get an appointment!)  That delayed my plans to put up my Christmas tree bay a day so that the carpet would dry enough to put down the Christmasvillagetown platform, which I did on Saturday.  I then dug out my artificial tree (which I realized was 45 years old this year) and put that up.  Yesterday, I ran out to a couple of stores to look for red and green led lights for the tree.  I finally found green lights but I thought they were too expensive (8.99 for a set of 50!)  So I came home and put on the old set of lights.  I've yet to start decorating the tree--it just feels too soon to get into the Christmas spirit for me.

I also love him in the Universal-International film HOT SUMMER NIGHT (1957). I had not seen this film until I got ready to interview his leading lady, Colleen Miller. Quite a nice, suspense thriller.

Very surpised this is only now getting noticed.

R.I.P Christopher Shea (child actor; voice of Linus in A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS)

Christopher Dylan Shea

passed away on August 19th of natural causes near his home in Honeydew, California. Born on February 5, 1958 in Los Angeles, Christopher had made Humboldt County his home for over twenty years. As a young boy, Christopher acted in such iconic television shows as The Odd Couple, Bonanza, and Green Acres, as well as numerous appearances in the Sunday evening classic series The Wonderful World of Disney. His most recognized role was that of voicing the character of Linus Van Pelt in the original Charles Schulz's Peanuts television specials, A Charlie Brown Christmas and It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown among others. Christopher was a colorful person with a playful spirit and a big heart. His smile was contagious and his family enjoyed his wonderfully sincere hugs. Christopher influenced many who crossed his path in a positive and creative way: he frequently lent a hand to others when they were in need. He had a generous nature and took genuine pleasure in other people's good fortune. He loved communing with nature, listening to music, and he had a lifelong passion for literature. Christopher was a loving father, a devoted son, and a caring brother and uncle. He is deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Christopher is survived by his wife Sara Straton, and his beloved daughters, Nicea Straton-Shea and Teal Straton-Shea. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2010. Care is under the direction of Pierce Mortuary, Eureka, California. I've had my 28.5-minute walk around the basement, watched CITY ISLAND, and sustained a pretty deep paper cut while filing some paperwork.  Not a biggie under normal circumstances, but when you're on 3 or 4 meds that have blood thinning effects it's quite an event.  I've wrapped a band-aid pretty tight around my finger to act as a tourniquet.  And my live-in EMT is in Michigan!

Very surpised this is only now getting noticed.

R.I.P Christopher Shea (child actor; voice of Linus in A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS)

Christopher Dylan Shea

passed away on August 19th of natural causes near his home in Honeydew, California. Born on February 5, 1958 in Los Angeles,

Such a nice obit.  He was too young.

I returned to the hiking trails this morning.  It felt good to go uphill, down of course was difficult.  It was really nice to walk on the soft trails instead of the hard asphalt, plus there were patches of snow for Sherlock.  I slowed us both down at the mildly icy patches.

DR John G., the Annie Lennox Christmas CD is lovely to listen to, but I don't understand why they decided to tinker with her voice.  Not exactly auto-tuned but it's definitely being piped through some kind of wire.  As they say in Twitter Land, #UnnecessarilyOverProduced...
Thanks. I won't be rushing out to grab a copy.

Finished the book of "The Painted Veil" this afternoon. Now I'm watching the movie again, which I hadn't seen for a few years. Interesting differences that make each a unique way of telling the same tale. I prefer the original Maugham, but I don't think I would like a movie to follow his story too closely. It's perhaps too internal. And I like the odd pairing that Naomi Watts and Ed Norton make.

I picked up my new progressive lenses today & dropped off my old distance glasses to be sent out for new lenses.  I still need to get used to these, however, WOW the world is suddenly much brighter.  The last two times my subscription changed it was so minor I didn't spend the money for new lenses.  Of course the doctor was comparing the last change to the previous one, not to the correction in my lenses at the time.  It appears my astigmatism has gotten worse too.

As anyone read any of these books?  Ginny I know you read Gilded Cage.

Meeting and adoption to take place tomorrow.  She is one year old.  House trained.  Siberian Husky + German Shepherd mix.

To quote the website:
Quote
Molly was adopted and returned and we have learned that she has to be in a home where she is not alone as she gets anxious so a stay at home person would be good. Molly is very friendly and loves everyone. She has a lot of energy and needs exercise and a fenced in yard would be wonderful for her. While Molly likes people and children she wants to be the only pets so no other dogs or cats please. Molly is house trained.

Yes, DR Jane, I read In a Gilded Cage in March 2009 (according to the list I keep), but I don't remember much about the plot.

Maybe that was the one you were disappointed in.  I still need to read it to follow the story line.  I'm sure it is an easy quick read to place in-between a couple of other books.

Are you reading THE LACUNA?

Yes, to both.  I wanted the Gilded Cage book to be better than it was.  And, yes, I'm reading THE LACUNA, slowly but surely.

Jose do you have any natural black licorice?  I find letting it slowly dissolve helps.  Don't eat anymore tonight before going to bed.  Oh, some say drinking water helps, unfortunately not for me.

No, she's gonna hold down the fort at home, sitting and waiting on pins and needles.
We're expecting heavy rains tomorrow. . . .but, the worst should happen before I get home.
I do have a cousin riding along with me, to control Molly on the long, ride home.

Had a wonderful rehearsal - little Lucy Taylor really socks home here song, I must say.  Then I went and had a sandwich and fries and now I'm going to sit on my couch like so much fish.

DR Jane - I'm only about 30 pages into THE LACUNA.  I'm reading a hardcover and tend not to carry it around much.  I've only been reading it before I go to sleep at night.  It has begun to grab me, so I think it will begin to hold my interest better as it goes along.

DR Jane - No licorice in the house, however, I did have some Tums - which really didn't have any effect. However, I haven't had anything to eat since 7:00, so, hopefully, that will help me sleep last night. -And, of course, I'm now realizing that the coughing fits of the past two nights have been caused by the acid reflux and not post-nasal drip.

She sounds great.

Yes, DR Jane, I read In a Gilded Cage in March 2009 (according to the list I keep), but I don't remember much about the plot.

You remind me of my mom, except instead of a list she writes the date in the front of the book so if she picks it up again, she knows she read it.   Of course this doesn't apply of she's in the bookstore and buys a book she's already read

No TSA stories, Elmore?

TSA? Which means?

Did you get felt up at the airport?

If I recall correctly, I reported that US Air is not yet using the new security scans when I arrived in Ohio last Sunday. I therefore have no stories to relate. If it means a good grope, I'm all for it.

Gee, I guess I am offending everyone tonight!

Man, I feel left out, you haven't offended ME yet!
