We are about to go to Western Beef for groceries.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Betty Garrett.

She was one of the nicest ladies in show business, and a great talent.

She was very helpful to me when I wrote my Al Jolson play back in the 1980s.

Sunday.  Today is our monthly board meeting for the theater and I am going to take everyone a copy of the 50th Anniversary DVD - and a player to preview it on......we shall see what is said.....mostly I am sure complaints about one thing or the other....but that is typical from the people WHO don't do ANYTHING themselves, but freely criticize the work of those who do something......and work in the box office ONCE for every show......unless they call and try to get someone else to work the ONE NIGHT they said they would.....

Everyone is busy - everyone has things to do - if you just want your name on the board list and you don't want to work with us doing EVERYTHING - get the hell out.

Good morning, all! I've got the laundry in the dryers and the kitchen and bathroom are mopped - I sound like DR MattH! -  when I bring the laundry home, I will vacuum and consider my housework finished for the day. I may run down to Kinko's at 72nd with a few photocopied scores I need to have bound, but I first have some writing on Victor Herbert - VicHerbert was John McGlinn's aol address - and I have to pack up the CDs of  One Touch of Venus to be mailed tomorrow.

DR FJL, I'm glad you enjoed the concert; I think all three ladies are wonderful.

Mikey, I hope Mickey Mouse nuggets are not the same as Mickey Mouse droppings.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes to DR Jose and all DRs in need today! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We were up at 8, and with three short yard walks in, no results.
Breakfast has been eaten:  Vanilla Chobani Yogurt.  Pedigree and meds for Molly.
Miss Molly slept well in her "home," with no whimpering or crying.
She's back in her crate, snoring already.
The floors are mopped and I have to make the bed. I just rewrite some notes on the opening number of "The Lady Of The Slipper." After I make the bed, I'll fetch my laundry.
After I put the laundry into the washers at 8am, I went around the corner to Cafe 82 and had two eggs, sausage and home fries for breakfast. It was quite yummilicious.
DR ELMORE what exactly constitutes the BEST of PDQ BACH?  How could one choose.
DR ELMORE what exactly constitutes the BEST of PDQ BACH?  How could one choose.
DR JRand60, I have no idea! PDQ Bach's compositions make me laugh, but I put FIGARO and OEDIPUS TEX at the top of my list. Sometimes the titles grab me, like the Liebeslieder Polkas, which is a joke on Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes. He's a funny guy.
Peter Schickele shows the same quirky humor in his own compositions but they are definitely not PDQ Bach jokes. He's a skilled composer amd his arrangements and orchestrations from the late 1960s and early 1970s are fantastic: Buffy St Marie's "Circle Game," along with several other songs on that recording, Joan Baez' Christmas album NOEL, and others.
Greetings from Southwest flight 2992!  My first experience with WiFi on a plane--they have an introductory price of $5--pretty good!
I had a great time at the Musicares show.  I have to say I was a little surprised to see so many men in suits--the event was supposed to be back-tie and I went to the trouble of renting a tux and worried about it being all wrinkled from the flight, etc!  ( I worry about stupid things, I know).
Anyway, the tribute to Barbra was quite spectacular, despite one of the Musicares reps referring to her as Barbra "Strizeland," if you can believe that!  She's quite sensitive about the pronunciation of her name, so I can only imagine her reaction!
The performers included Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Barry Manilow, Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison (a duet), Lea Michele, Diana Krall, Lee Ann Rimes and CeCe Wynans, Herbie Hancock accompanying a young singer with a name beginning with "Y" (can't remember!).    They were mostly good/great.
So Ms. Streisand accepted her award and then sang a 7 1/2 minute medley of her hits as well as a song from her last album and two songs from her upcoming Marilyn and Alan Bergman album:  Windmills of Your Mind and The Promise/ How Could I Ever Say Goodbye.  She sounded mostly great, but she does have that raspy quality on the high notes.
I found out at about 11am that nobody else wanted to go except me and my niece. So we went together.
I had forgotten that they had made a new parking lot. Much bigger. So we got a spot. We got there at 11:55am and it started at noon. Usually the good parking spots would be gone. But there were plenty in the new lot.
We like to get there early so we don't have to wait in line.
First we went on a caleche ride.
Then we had taffy on the snow.
Then I wanted to go the big bouncy things. But my niece wanted to go sledding.
So we tredged through the snow and went. And went. And went again.  My niece kept wanting to go even though i could tell that she was getting tired.
Luckily they had people supervising. Because some people are just so stupid. They just walk on the course! Without looking!
Just as we were leaving 2 young girls and their mom stepped right in front of someone coming down fast. And the guy was yelling at them to move. Does the mother move? No. The guy who was supervising the hill had to dive feet first and stop the sledder from hitting the girl. If I had been him i would have given the mother a talking to. I don't even think she thanked him.
When we were about to go down for our last run, some other stupid people went on our course and just stood there. I asked the guy supervising at the top if he could motion to the guy at the bottom. Not sure why that guy did not notice these people.  But I always wait till the course is completely clear before i go. Cause our sled is really fast.
Der Brucer I was thinking of sending you an email if you didn't post soon.  How is your household doing?
Don't worry, DR Laura has been nagging checking up on me.
Woody and the canine tribe are doing fine and I'm having a dickens of a time trying to work out my peripheral neuropathy problems.
I've been to a neurologist and had MRIs, X-Rays, Sonograms, gallons of blood tests, weeks of physical therapy (three times a weeks). Next on the agenda is a trip to an endocrinologist to investigate potentail thyroid problems (marginal blood work and two tiny nodules showed up on a sonogram).
Seems like an awful lot of trouble for a medical condition whose most delibilating effects are my inability to stand and chat at a cocktail party or to do ironing standing up. Fortunately Medicare coupled with my Medigap insurance makes all these endeaors cost free to me (Sorry, fellow taxpayers).
We have tried using Anhodyne therapy - after two treatments I noticed a measurabale improvement in my ability to "sense' my feet. (This came as  some surprise because the treatments are not generally considered effective by the medical community.)
Rehoboth is so small and insignificant that Mother Nature virtually passed us by with all the recent snow storms.
Your physical symptoms may well have interfered with your sense of taste and helped ruin your breakfast.
Note: with real maple syrup now costing upwards of $100/gallon few restaurants any longer offer the real thing - and the substitutes are definitely inferior.
Unfortunately, no. Thankfully, I did not have to judge. There were 29 entries, varying from burnt to pasta sauce, according to one of the judges. I was fairly lucky in the two or three I tasted. No odd ingredients like corn or mushrooms. No beans (this is Texas, where beans are heresy, though many with beans were served up). No mystery meats (just beef and pork, from what I could tell).
Sunday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I returned from Lima to a Facebook message from my cousin that my aunt has been taken back to the hospital and admitted for testing.  Now, if they'd done that 48 hours ago, when she was already in the building, it would have saved a lot of people a lot of stress.  I've told my cousin that I'll wait until tomorrow to go out there, unless there's an immediate need.
So Ms. Streisand accepted her award and then sang a 7 1/2 minute medley of her hits as well as a song from her last album and two songs from her upcoming Marilyn and Alan Bergman album:  Windmills of Your Mind and The Promise/ How Could I Ever Say Goodbye.  She sounded mostly great, but she does have that raspy quality on the high notes.
...Sickness. Not fun.
Today has consisted of freezing all night, waking up to a shower of hell-ness, passing out for another few hours, waking up to Mom with nice soup (Gotta love a Mom with soup), watching "La Cage Au Falles" in french, and playing make-over before coming on here.
The best part of the day was the soup and the fact that my eyebrows match my hair for the first time in seven years or so. *Laughs*
How's everyone else doing so far then? And feel better vibes to all who need them.
First of all, I should say that I am not a huge fan of Sir Andrew,  I think that VELVITA is one of the worst Broadway shows that I ever sat through.  Actually, I have only listened to the show's music a couple of times, but I  have heard several songs on the radio and and on You Tube.  Basically, I don't think the score is very strong.  TILL I HEAR YOU SING is a nice number, but I can't say that I really "like" very much else in the score.  And the storyline is pretty poor.  I mean, hasn't poor Coney Island already suffered enough?
You should probably ask someone more "in the know;" for example, Jose.
I have the London cast recording and have only listened to it once.  I thought that it was okay, but not great.  I like the title song a little better than "Till I Hear You Sing," but I like the tune to the title song much better when it was used in ALW's show The Beautiful Game and it was called "Our Kind of Love."
Just my 2¢.
I tried to give the Girls Scouts a donation instead of buying the cookies, and they were not allowed to accept it. The Girl Scout Council and the bakery don't get a cut of the cash.
I've lived in multiple places and have never been refused a donation.  They keep it for their local group.
Hi, DR The Vixter - hope you feel better soon!
Me too!! I need to know how I did on my last math test SO badly. >_< Oh, by the way, my Mom asked last night, I think, but just wondering, has anyone listened to "Love Never Dies"? I'd like your opinions on it, siince you guys are really the people to come to about theater productions and such. :)
I believe that the presentation tends to drain the grasp of the thesbian.
TRANSLATION:  The show sucks!  (Personal opinion only)
*Laughs* Awsome way of putting it. But I'd like to know why you feel that way, if you don't mind? :)
First of al, I should say that I am not a huge fan of Sir Andrew,  I think that VELVITA is one of the worst Broadway shows that I ever sat through.  Actually, I have only listened to ithe show's music a  couple of times, but I  have heard several songs on the radio and and on You Tube.  Basically, I don't think the score is very strong.  TILL I HEAR YOU SING is a nice number, but I can't say that I really "like" very much else in the score.  And the storyline is pretty poor.  I mean, hasn't poor Coney Island already suffered enough?
You should probably ask someone more "in the know;" for example, Jose.
No, I appreciate your review just as much as Joses. :) I'm just trying to see what people who are over the age of seventeen think of it. >_<" High school can be limiting.
When I was your age, I thoght that JESUS CHRIST SUERSTAR was pure genius.
And now? I suposse you don't like it as much.
No, I probably don't like is as much now, as I did then; because I am able to see its flaws more easily now.  Still, I think that any medium that can bring more people to the teachings of Christ is a postive thing.
Very true. I gotta try to find some more christian musicals to use for church related things. There's only so far you can go with Godspell.
Hmm, I actually haven't heard either song yet. My friends show me all the dark ones. Of the ones they've shown me though, "Beauty Underneath" seems to be the best one. Or "Devil Take The Hindmost". Where did you get the recording, my friend would love to get that for her birthday.
Some Girl Scouts in Minnesota are on strike.  They heard their camp might be sold so they said if you sell our camp you can sell your own cookies!
And unlike, DR TCB, I like Evita. -In fact, I'd have to say it's my favorite ALW score.  And there are also parts of Aspects of Love which I find fascinating for reasons known and unknown.
I don't know who half the people are and the ones that are attempting to sing or make some type of music are horrible.  I never saw "Lady" Gaga before and I hope I never do again.  Were those really her shoulders?  She looks like a Madonna wantabe.
Vixter, do they have to be specifically Christian, or can they just be inspirational-type shows?  One show that I absolutely love is The Spitfire Grill.  It's based on a movie, which in turn is based on a book.  I haven't seen or read either, but from what I understand, the movie doesn't have a happy ending.  The musical does.  I highly recommend looking into that one.
I like when I see multiple children selling their wares in front of markets & businesses.  I think that is much easier than going door to door.
DR Cillaliz - I had to re-read that a few times. I kept thinking/reading it as "ugly candies". ::)
No, I had the "Ugly Candies".  LOL!   I'm sure everyone here knows "Worlds Finest".  I confess I just bought some a little while back from someone at work.  The size of the bar you get for your dollar sure has changed.  They downsized it quite a bit.
I tell the neighborhood kids that I will buy from the first person who comes to my door selling whatever it is...and I do.  I also tell them if they aren't first that I'll buy from them the next fundraiser if the get to me first.  Although where I live now, I'd probably buy from more than one.  I don't get many selling door to door.  I used to live between two elementary schools and would get 10-12 selling the same thing
Went to Marie Callender's for dinner - just what the doctor ordered.  Plus a friend brought Mucinex over and that really has helped in the last two hours.
Fortunately I don't have neighbors coming to the door selling anymore.  It can be tiresome after awhile.  I had basically stopped buying from them as well.  The stuff is usually pretty bad.
One of the schools finally did a fundraiser without selling anything, just asked for donations instead.  It was very successful as the parents were very happy not to have to help their children sell anything.
For the most part, my parents were the same way.  We had no choice for Seniors night.  You either sold X number of candy bars or you didn't go.  The funny thing about it was i really didn't want to.   I knew I'd made a mistake when I got on the bus,  couldn't wait until it was over and come home.
I was always teased so badly and that night was more of a hell night then a fun night.  I think I cried most of the way home.  But that was nothing new.  If I had a dime for every time I cried on the bus ride home from school, I wouldn't have to work now.
I can't get over how expensive some of the stuff the kids sell now days is.
I got stopped by a little boy at one of the stores, asking me to buy some pop corn.  I had like three dollars cash on me and was about to say ok when he told me it was $20.00 for a box!!!!
I told him I was sorry but that was way out of my price range.  Then you feel bad because you turned them down.
I didn't like that they took the kids out of class, sent them to an assembly, were given the pep talk by the salesman, got all hyped up by the possible prizes, and then sent out to sell the overpriced junk that no one really wants, and yet only a few kids sold enough to get paid with said prizes. Most of the kids sold stuff and all the money goes to the company.
DR the vixter - As for Love Never Dies, well... I have listened to it once, and, frankly, once was enough for me.  It's not bad, it's just a bit bland to me.  -Although I think the orchestrations make the music seem better than it actually is - at least in my opinion.
I believe DR Matthew needs to chime in here.
Ok. He knows alot about the show then?
Well, DR Matthew is the resident HHW ALW Expert/Fanboy. ;)
He didn't like PHANTOM in Vegas.
Well, different places switch up things, like how The Lion King in Vegas had (I think it was less) songs then the one on Broadway. Maybe the Vegas version wasn't as well pulled off?
*Laughs* Awsome way of putting it. But I'd like to know why you feel that way, if you don't mind? :)
First of al, I should say that I am not a huge fan of Sir Andrew,  I think that VELVITA is one of the worst Broadway shows that I ever sat through.  Actually, I have only listened to ithe show's music a  couple of times, but I  have heard several songs on the radio and and on You Tube.  Basically, I don't think the score is very strong.  TILL I HEAR YOU SING is a nice number, but I can't say that I really "like" very much else in the score.  And the storyline is pretty poor.  I mean, hasn't poor Coney Island already suffered enough?
You should probably ask someone more "in the know;" for example, Jose.
No, I probably don't like is as much now, as I did then; because I am able to see its flaws more easily now.  Still, I think that any medium that can bring more people to the teachings of Christ is a postive thing.
Very true. I gotta try to find some more christian musicals to use for church related things. There's only so far you can go with Godspell.
Vixter, do they have to be specifically Christian, or can they just be inspirational-type shows?  One show that I absolutely love is The Spitfire Grill.  It's based on a movie, which in turn is based on a book.  I haven't seen or read either, but from what I understand, the movie doesn't have a happy ending.  The musical does.  I highly recommend looking into that one.
Hmm, sounds good to me. It's just, if we ever want to do a musical for the church, you can't have anything "bad" in it. The options are limited unfortunately, and the only ones "known" are Godspell and Jesus Christ Super Star. ... Pippin doesn't count because that's the "wrong" side of christianity portrayed. XD
Jose mentioned "Joseph and the Amazing ...." which would certainly work. You might look into "The Gospel at Colonus," especially if you have a multi-ethnic cast. Schmidt and Jones have a wonderful show called "Philemon" about a runaway slave and the writing of 1 Corintheans 13, the chapter about love. "The Human Comedy" from the composer of "Hair" is another with a Christian message without being overtly Christian. It's got a lot of music, if that's a matter of concern. If not, there's always "Les Miz."
Hello... I'm ba-ack...
DR the vixter - I believe Alan Menken's "King David" is also available for licensing as a "concert oratorio".
Hi Jose.
Jose mentioned "Joseph and the Amazing ...." which would certainly work. You might look into "The Gospel at Colonus," especially if you have a multi-ethnic cast. Schmidt and Jones have a wonderful show called "Philemon" about a runaway slave and the writing of 1 Corintheans 13, the chapter about love. "The Human Comedy" from the composer of "Hair" is another with a Christian message without being overtly Christian. It's got a lot of music, if that's a matter of concern. If not, there's always "Les Miz."
....And The Human Comedy can be quite moving and tear-inducing. At least it was when I did it.
Long past sunset,
Long after the day is through.
Long past sunset,
I'll be with you
Long past daylight
When the world is fast asleep,
Long past sunset,
When shadows are deep.
I'll be so near to you
In your esteeming.
I will appear to you
When you are dreaming.
Long past sunset
When the day has done
All that it can do,
Long past sunset
I'll be with you.
I guess I'm not on the opening night list anymore at the Pasadena Playhouse - too bad, although every single show I've seen there basically was a turkey.  I hear the new one is no different.
The Girl Scouts here were not able to take donations - they had to sell the cookies and if the cookies for soldiers thing works the same way there as it did here - the troop does not get the benefit of those sales - all profts went directly to the council
