Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fatherly, and now it is time for you to post until the fatherly cows come home.

Good morning, all! I was having EILEEN copyist nightmares so I had to get out of bed.

I have another quiet day, although I do have to draft an email about the slowdown in EILEEN copying in the past week, and get a fire going under some folks. I need a trip to the local hardware store to pick up a few housekeeping necessties, and that's essentially my day. I have some personal work to accomplish and I've got a lot of DVDs to catch up with.

Last night I watched Peter Ustinov and others in [Thirteen at Dinner[/i] and portions of two hrror movies, Michael Reeves' The She Beast, which was an ordeal, and a relatively new vampire film that was so bad it was like watching softcore porn. I enjoyed the Agatha Christie movie quite a lot, and that ended my curent set of Netflix items.

DR Ginny, I am happy the service went well, I applaud DRs TCB and cillaliz for moving the number of posts forward. I was amazed to find so many posts this morning.

Speaking of Father's Day, I am a bit melancholic, missing my dad. Still, I wish all the fathers of my acquaintance a great day.

Gee, BK,

My son tells me he has sent me copies of both UNKNOWN and THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU (via Amazon) for Father's Day.

After reading your comments....

My hope is that this will be one of those many times where our opinions differ.

Well, I'll let you know what I think.

Post by: JMK on June 19, 2011, 06:49:34 AM
I summed up THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU with a resounding "meh" for y'all many days ago when I reviewed it.  I think I may have liked it even less than BK, but I gave it 3 stars for Chick Flick lovers, which is what I felt it basically is.

Jose, you actually DON'T have to reset a Droid phone.  We've already done one workaround, which did in fact work, I was just wondering if there's something simpler.
Title: Re: FATHER'S DAY

For some reason, reading summaries of UNKNOWN brought back memories of THE PRIZE.
Title: Re: FATHER'S DAY
Post by: JMK on June 19, 2011, 06:51:24 AM
Though I don't have to go to my church gig today, I am trying to catch up on reviews after several stressful days dealing with the soon to be ex-tenants.  I believe I will crank out reviews for the Michael Tilson Thomas Keeping Score series, this one about Mahler, which was absolutely superb, RideBack an anime series that's kind of interesting, and perhaps Max Manus, a Finnish film about a real-life WWII resistance leader.

Geek Alert Department.  OK, this is for those of you who haven't yet realized how obsessive compulsive I am about completely picayune things.  (There are a few of you who haven't realized that, yet).

BTW, Jane, this post will be long, so just skip it now.  :)

My mother got an album many many years ago from the Columbia Record Club when I was a kid, entitled Soundstage Spectacular.  It was by "Terry Baxter," whom I have since found out didn't actually exist, but was a Columbia Record Club pseudonym for specialty products that were evidently conducted by a variety of different arrangers (though a couple of Terry Baxter albums have Terry Baxter arrangements, something I've not yet been able to clarify).

One of the reasons I've loved Soundstage Spectacular since I was a kid was for its absolutely elegant orchestrations by Johnny Gregory, and if you haven't heard his work, I highly, highly recommend checking some of it out.

Anyhoo, I have been scouring eBay for a decent copy of said album and over the course of the past couple of years have gotten 3, 2 of which were badly damaged.  I finally got a near mint copy and was pulling the first two to put in the donation pile when I noticed something really peculiar.  Two of the three copies list 25 Songs from 25 Films as the subtitle, but one lists 24 Songs from 24 Films as the subtitle, and is missing the delightful "An Angel is Love" from BARBARELLA.  (A fantastic Gregory arrangement).  I think this is most peculiar and can't for the life of me figure out why they would have to pull one song, especially on what was probably a one shot limited release deal made to Columbia Record Club members.  Also, that version has a red label different from the typical Columbia Musical Treasuries Gold Label.

And thus ends my OCD Father's Day screed.

DR JMK - maybe the "rights" expired - that song was only licensed for the first pressing - and those albums were featured for years in the ads where you got 12 albums free for joining, and CH wanted to keep it in the mix......

I don't have it ... although I remember it for some reason.

Well, if you got them together, then they should have met. If you simply carried discussions back and forth, you're taking too much credit. The soap she was on was the ridiculously horrifying PASSIONS, written by a now-dead insanely mad queen who collected Barbie dolls, as I recall. All I remember of the soap, besides the atrocious acting, was that Charity's bedroom closet was the doorway to hell.

You really need a Nook or a Kindle. You could read anything and it wouldn't be too heavy.  Many libraries have downloadable books

After I bruised my tendon I tried picking up Keith's Nook & it was too difficult.  A lighter weight book was easier.  I still haven't downloaded a book from the library which I should do in the near future so Craig doesn't have to keep making trips to the library for me.

Good Afternoon!

Well...

When I got to my storage facility, I headed up to my storage unit... Started to dial in my combination for my padlock... And then I tried another combination... And another combination... And.... Well...

Long story short, the very kind man at the front desk called someone from maintenance to cut off my lock, and I purchased a new lock - a keyed one. I then spent a little under an hour sorting through some clothes and packing up my one big suitcase to bring back to DC. I also made notes of some things I can go ahead and trash and/or donate the next time I get to my storage unit. -Which may be tomorrow morning. We shall see...

Then since I happened to get back to the apartment around 1:45, I decided to go ahead and catch the 2:00 screening of "Company with the New York Philharmonic" - since it was playing less than a block away at the East 86th Street Cinemas...
Title: Re: FATHER'S DAY
Post by: JoseSPiano on June 19, 2011, 03:13:34 PM
I thought "Company with The New York Philharmonic" was very well done. Acting-wise, it was cast very well. And singing-wise, well... I could tell they had done some "sweetening" here and there to fix some "problems" for one person in particular, but, otherwise, it was nice to hear the score again backed up by a full(!) orchestra. There was also a nice not-so-obvious use of the "Ensemble" - a.k.a. The Couch Movers - to help fill out the sound.

I was really touched by the scene between Kathy (Chryssie Whitehead) and Bobby. First of all, it was nice to see Chyrssie act - she was the "Christine" in the revival of A Chorus Line - and I thought they both brought out the sweetness and heartbreak in the scene. -And since I'm about to leave New York City for a bit, well...

Of course, since it was one of those "Directed for the Stage and Screen" deals, I would have preferred a bit less editing. -During the opening "Company", each couple is brought up in a shot during their solo lines. But it was nice to see the close-ups from time to time. The sound design was also a little strange - the "sense" of the hall was different between the dialogue sections and the songs. The fade-outs of the applause after a song into a dialogue section were a bit too obvious to my ears - it was like you could hear the guy at the soundboard changing which mics were on. -But that really is a very minor quibble in the larger scheme of things.
Title: Re: FATHER'S DAY
Post by: JoseSPiano on June 19, 2011, 03:17:14 PM
One thing that was sort of a major quibble during the screening was that the picture was just way too dark. After reading those articles that Roger Ebert had posted a few weeks ago, I figured that they were using the same lenses they use for the 3-D presentations. Well...

In the middle of "You Could Drive A Person Crazy", the picture went black but the audio continued. A few seconds went by, and the picture didn't come back up. A couple of people then ran out to the lobby... Then the sound stopped, and the manager came in, "Sorry, folks. The bulb in the projector blew. We're going to have to change it."

Thankfully, it didn't take too long for them to change the bulb. And, yes, the picture was much(!) brighter after they did so. -I could even hear other people in the theatre making comments about how much better it looked.

Nobody else has mentioned it, so I guess I'm the only who hasn't liked Neil Patrick Harris doing a solo on the line "give another number to me" in "Side by Side." I think it's recognition too early and, well, sort of torpedoes the song. But I'm going to see it Tuesday night, if I can.

If you have a hair dryer try using a low head to dry out your ears.  Of course the best time to do that is after you are in the water or after a shower.

I feel much better than I did last week. Last weekend I was quite upset to find out I'd gained 10 lbs while sick.  No exercise and all that hot chocolate and candy and throat drops did it.

So i decided I had to get rid of those lbs immediately. So for the last week i've been exercising a minimum of 1 hour a day. And eating a lot of vegetables and some fruit and no ice cream or chocolate or processed food. And i'm tring to do 1 slice of black bread a day, no rice, little potatoes and little noodles.

I really do feel much better this week. I figure i could maybe lose the 10lbs i gained in 2 weeks. Not sure,  but we'll see.

I hate weighing myself. But I would like to ideally lose another 15lbs. I hate that my body seems to like being the 15 lbs heavier. I don't like it. I think i am going to start weighing myself every 2 weeks and making sure i don't gain weight (after i lose the 15lbs). Sometimes i don't even realize it.

Answers from Nick Department:  We went waaaaay long on the actual IV segment, so I had to limit myself to two questions.

The Bell that Couldn't Ring IS on a CD release--the 1994 extended CD.  R&H would not license the song after that for whatever reason.

State Fair--it "sounds" easy to contact Dot, but in reality it's difficult.  No one knew who owned it, and if it was Universal they wouldn't have cooperated anyway.

I'm confused, since I have the 2-CD 35th anniversary recording which has the reprise of "Sixteen Going On Seventeen," the correct title of "A Bell Is No Bell." According to Amazon.com, both the 40th and 45th anniversary discs list it. I see that it wasn't on the 30th anniversary reissue of the original recording, but I don't plan on buying another copy of the soundtrack, especially to get a track of the dreadful Lea Michelle singing "My Favorite Things."

Summer drives me nuts a little....well more than a little.....my family seems to think I can drop everything every weekend and run up to see them.  It's 2 hours one way just to get there.  Actually, it's more like they expect me to go Father's Day, Fourth of July, the week after 4th of July and a weekend in August - when family is in from out of town and a couple other weekends.   Now, if one of them would ever come and help me just once, perhaps I could swing it, but when I ask for help, they say yes and don't show, so I quit asking.

Today I had to remind my dad that I was with him for 4 days just a week ago and talked to him every day for the last week.   I'm so tired of having to put my projects aside to go sit at the lake for their vacations.....sorry for the rant, but I'm tired of it.

Kim was a friend who passed away recently. The kittens' names are some of her kitties over the years.

Ok, one more thing about the rant.  This year I turn 50. Now, never mind the fact that I didn't hear from most of them last year at all. Now they think I should drive up there to be with them for my birthday.  Not going to do it.   I'm going to have my first party at my house.  That's part of the reason I'm working so hard to get the yard and house in shape outside.  We can always be inside if it rains, but I'd love to have an outside party and have all my Sioux City friends over.  I'll invite the family, but they haven't come to anything else I've had here, so I'd be surprised if they came.

Ok, now end of rant.  It was really really hard to plant the trees today. Much harder than the last three I planted.  It was hot and I drank literally a gallon of water while I did it. I'm feeling a lot better but am still a bit cranky.  Can you tell :)

I'm just gonna say if there were mid-show standing ovations then it was all friends of cast and obsessive Sondheim fanatics - no normal, well-behaved theatergoer stands in the middle of a show and I don't care WHAT show it is.  I remember the first time it happened - Hello, Dolly - not the original run, mind you, where the number got sustained rapturous applause and ovation and led to the built-in encore - no, there was no standing there - no, it was the later tours, when Miss Channing's husband would stand up every single performance after that number, after which everyone took his lead.  It's absolutely ridiculous and insulting, in my opinion (IMO, in Internet lingo), and it's suddenly all about the audience and certainly not about the actual show they're seeing - and thus ends my rant.  Nothing personal directed at FJL, who obviously loved the show enough to see it multiple times and I'm sure will be seeing it multiple times again should it in fact actually open in NY.

DR JohnG - I had to go back and listen to the OCR - a couple of of their versions - as well as review the clip posted by the NY Phil on YouTube... It really doesn't bother me. And it sort of does work if you take into regard his previous "lost-ness" after his "tap solo", and then what comes after the "Side By Side By Side".

One way to see it as not sinking the number is that Bobby is just going along with his friends. They've been singing "What would do without you?" over and over, and now he's just going along with that sentiment. -And the sense of time in Company is anything but linear, so...

Finally, Mr. Sondheim did approve the change, so... ;)

And speaking of the Broadway transfer of the Kennedy Center production of Follies, it is scheduled to start previews July 31 at The Marquis. -The cast - including DR elmore's Dear Friend Ron Raines - started leaking(?) the news earlier today.

*And the auditions I'm playing tomorrow are for the replacements of three ensemble members of Oklahoma! that we will be losing as a result of the transfer of Follies. We will miss them, but we're all very happy that they'll be getting a Broadway Production Contract.

And now...

I had sort of planned to make one more trip to my storage unit in the morning, but I think I'm just gonna let myself sleep in a bit, and if I happen to get up in time - and feel like it - then I'll do just that. Otherwise, I'll just take my time in the morning, maybe hit the new stretch of The Highline, and then head to the audition in the afternoon. And then dinner, and then the Gala Opening of Shakespeare in the Park. And with that full day ahead of me...

Goodnight.

Belated birthday wishes to the DM of DR George.

Thanks, Jane!  We got her the complete series to "Monk"...all eight seasons.  She loves that show and was very happy to get the DVDs!  For Father's Day, we took our dad to see Pearl Django at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle a couple of weeks ago.

So, what did everyone have for their Father's Day dinner, or brunch?

Costco pizzas...half combination pizza (mom's choice) and half cheese (for my dad and sister) and a pepperoni (for me).  My sister made a lemon/ginger cake.  It was all delish! :D

I've accepted people's need to stand up after every show, no matter what show or how good or bad it is - they stood at Baby, It's You - I will never accept people standing DURING a show - then we're at a sporting event or a concert, not a show where we're supposed to be involved and invested.  I love energy as much as the next fellow, and I've been to many what I would call electric performances between cast, play, and audience - and not one of them caused people to actually disrupt the experience by standing up.  Sustained big ovations - sure, and then the show went on.  I'm not the only one who feels like this - but I also know others, especially those involved in the theater or friendly with the cast or obsessed with the writers, feel otherwise.  But, for me anyway, it's off-putting, and of course I would not join those standing mid-performance.  If they want to, yes, that's their business - I don't have to like it and I don't and I would glare at them and there would be little bits of spittle at the corners of my mouth and I would do my impression of she of the Evil Eye - otherwise, I'm jiggy with all of it :)

My niece is vegan.  My sister is vegetarian...she still eats cheese and eggs.  I actually get a dozen eggs every couple of weeks for my sister from a coworker who raises chickens.

For Father's Day, I made a CD compilation for my dad (Pearl Django) and created a booklet, but the Word file for the booklet was on my memory stick at my work.  The building's closed on Sundays, but I have a keycard and the code to turn off the alarm.  I got to work, turned off the alarm, finished up the booklet on my computer, printed it, cut it down, left, turned on the alarm and got to Costco without incident...EXCEPT THAT I LEFT MY WALLET AT WORK!  My wallet has my Costco card, my debit card, cash that I was actually going to buy the pizzas with AND the keycard to get back into work.  Crap.  I called my sister and told her that I couldn't buy the pizzas. :( She called her boyfriend who was actually at Costco at that time, so he was able to get food for the gang.  I'll pay him back tomorrow.

I'm doing my laundry.  I'm also watching the two-hour pilot to the new (mini?-)series "Falling Skies" with Noah Wyle.  The problem is that there are times when they are speaking quite quietly because aliens have landed on Earth and have taken over and they (the humans) don't want to get caught.  I can understand mumbling for that reason, but my washing machine is a bit too loud, so I have to turn up the TV to hear what they say and it's all a bit too loud.  And I can't use the closed captioning, because it's never worked on my TV. :P

Hi everyone -

Today's adventure's with DD Ben were great.  We tried going DOWN stairs, but I think we're too young for that.  We hung out with niece Jenna and my sister and her husband.  I coached Jenna for her Honk Jr. audition next week, (she's auditioning for me!) she's very talented, and I hope she does well.  Oh, we also went to the dog park, which was fun.

Now, we're hanging out at home. Tomorrow, DD Ben Goes to Camp....

A few weeks ago, someone asked Dear Abby about this very issue.  She said that if you don't feel that the show (or moment) deserves a standing-o, then you shouldn't stand.  Quite a few years ago (when the previous Dear Abby was writing the column...actually, the mother of the current Dear Abby), she said that in the situation, you should stand but don't clap.

So, do what you want.
