These films come to mind:

The Matrix (but unfortunately what made it special has now been repeated in contless other movies)
Inception
The Sixth Sense (Saw it several times to catch everything I missed the first time and then the director tries to repeat his formula and I haven't like a movie of his since: Unbreakable, Signs and I guessed the "Twist" of The Village without seeing the film and I was right. I have seen it on TV since)

"Amarcord"
too many others to mention

JRand, "Within the Quota" was Cole Porter's jazz ballet. R.R. Bennett recorded the piano arrangements of the score and it supposedly sounds much different from the full orchestrations, which Charles Koehlin may not have augmented. I have the full orchestral recording and would just like a comparison. Many sites claim to have the Bennett version for free online, but i couldn't get any to work.

Good morning, all! I have to make a trip to the bank this morning to deposit the check to pay the EILEEN copyists, who are doing beautiful work. The turnaround tine for it was great. I need to deposit it and let my colleague Curtis know the deposit has been made. In other news about Curtis in London, I'm happy to report that the production of RICHARD III starring Dame Kevin Spacey is sold out for its London run, so I'm very happy that it's going well.

Today, after the bank, more proofreading work.

I'm sorry to hear about the death last night at HOW TO SUCCEED; I'm wondering if they had to break down the door to the restroom to find the stagehand. One of the theatre posts said that the announcement of cancellation wasn't made until around 9 pm. One of my least favorite posters on the cast recording list, who is - to be kind - an asshole, posted a long reason why he disliked Radcliffe (hates the Harry Potter franchise) and why he didn't deserve  a Tony nomination. Radcliffe's stock keeps going up in my book.

I hope the vixter has a great time at the Prom and that DSRvixmom survives the week.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Continued Vibes for all those in need! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Formula"?  What formula links "The Sixth Sense" to "Unbreakable" and "Signs"?  Each is an utterly different-from-the-others film story.   Is this "formula" your word for "genre" in this instance?  They are of a particular genre.  Much as Hitchcock specialized in a genre, Shyamalan specializes in a genre.
Whew!  I went down there and I apparently succeeded in getting out the worst of it last night.  It doesn't smell nearly as bad as it did and the dehumidifier has really dried it out.  It doesnt' look like any more has come in, so taking a night off was a great idea.
Good news.  I'm relieved you stuck to your plan & took the night off.  I remember basements that needed dehumidifiers-what a pain.
It looks like we will be taking our tenants to court, unfortunately.  They have played this about as stupidly as possible, all the more incomprehensible as they are both PhDs and Betsy and I have bent over backward to help/accommodate them every step of the way.
Sorry JMK though I'm not sure why being a PhD should make a difference.  Being smart doesn't guarantee morals or common sense.
I've worked long enough today. I called my pharmacy and ordered more meds, I spoke to Ron Raines, who's singing with the Boston Pops tonight, and told him all about the "How To Succeed" death last night. It was a funny conversation because he thought i was talking about "House of Blue Leaves." We finally got all of it straightened out, and his only comment was "so, any more gossip on FOLLIES?"
Good Evening!
I think I'm finally getting back into this whole "rehearsal from 10:00am-6:30pm" routine. Alas, I wish that didn't involved the whole "getting out of bed by 7:30am" routine. ;)
Last night our neighbor, and acquaintance of DR Charles Pogue, mentioned her friend's daughter is in a show that just opened on Broadway.  She didn't know the show & I didn't get the name.
Hey, it's a post.
Well... The one show that "just opened" is Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark... -Was that it? ;)
It looks like we will be taking our tenants to court, unfortunately.  They have played this about as stupidly as possible, all the more incomprehensible as they are both PhDs and Betsy and I have bent over backward to help/accommodate them every step of the way.
When have Phd's ever had common sense? ;)
I am so proud!   I am so excited!   I feel like a proud papa!   What a wonderful day!
I was reading all of the posts from yesterday that I didn't have a chance to read before now.  And as usual,certain posts beg for my smart-ass, quick responses, that, of course, I can't post because they belong to history.
For example, Jane posted that she and Keith were heading to the neighbors' house for wine and snacks.  Oh, how I wanted to respond.  And yet, suddenly my delightful dear friend MBarnum jumped in with an excellent and humorous post.
I need to deposit it and let my colleague Curtis know the deposit has been made. I had to look that up.  I really shouldn't make fun of PhD's as my daughter in-law will be one in a few years.  They will then be Dr. & Dr. instead of Mrs, or would have been Mrs if she had changed her name.  In all fairness she does have common sense, can't drive a car very well so she has a nice scooter instead.  In fact knowing where she parked her scooter on the street helped me figure out where I was (while out walking) when I was visiting them.
Thank you, Elmore for your help today. I don't know yet know how it will help, but it made me listen to the "Within the Quota" differently on my ride home tonight.
DR John G, you have to take "Within the Quota," along with "The snake in the Grass," as two of Porter's attempts to push his talents as a "serious" composer. not as the writer of  popular songs like"Let's do It" or "You've Got That Thing." Both he and Rodgers aspired to Gershwin's success on the concert stage, but they're really miniaturists. It's as masters of the popular song form and its extensions where they excelled.  I think as melodists Porter and Gershwin stand behind Rodgers, and I think they all stand behind Kern.
Sousa's band had a big success in European tours with ragtime and African-American rhythms at the turn of the century, although Paris always liked exotic musicians - Louis Moreau Gottschalk was very popular in Paris with his Cuban-influenced creole romanticism of the 1850s. If you don't know "Bamboula" or "The Banjo" and other piano pieces by Gottschalk, you're in for a treat. Imagine Chopin as a cakewalk.
A lot of black American performers ended up in Paris in the 1920s - Bricktop, josephine Baker, for example - and you had black jazz bands influencing Stravinsky (two "ragtime" pieces which show he still didn't understand it), Krenek (Johnny spielt auf), Kurt Weill (Threepenny Opera), Debussy (Golliwog's Cakewalk), Ravel (Piano concerto in G), Milhaud (Le creation du monde and Le boeuf sur le toit). The black bands in Europe did two things: improvised as jazz musicians and played popular songs with a "jazz" infusion. I think all the classically trained European composers would have been horrified to lose control of what they wrote with improvisation but I think they loved the new chords and the blue notes. Then, there were all the orchestra colors - harmon, hat, and cup mutes, trombone glissandi, brass growls, and other "rude" sounds - that the bands revelled in and these were things the composers could steal and take to "serious" music.
It seems awfully late to just be having graduation and prom.  Have they still been in school all June?
that is usual here -  we do not start school here until after Labor Day.  Tomorrow is the last day of school for the elementary grades... the high school ended regular classes after the first week of June but they have been holding exams
It's the same laundromat with the sign "Drop your pants here and you will get prompt attention"
There's a local car shop that has the slogan, "Take your leaks here."
DD Ben and I just walked to the dog park.  It's over the lagoon from the apartment.  DD Ben was awesome!!
Yeah! Did DD Ben make any friends at the dog park? Did you? ;)
Ha!  Well, Ben loves the other dogs.  In fact, so much that yesterday, I had to remove him from the dog park because he found a female he was interested in and he's not neutered yet!!  So, we left.  He loves to play with the other dogs, it's good social time for him.
Have I met anyone?  No... dog parks are very clique-ish I'm finding out.  I'm not really good and jumping in and making friends.  Maybe if I keep going.  It's fun watching Ben and the others play, though.
Well, I must be going to bed.  I didn't get much sleep last night (actually, this morning) and I want some tonight.
Good night, all.
