I love black-and-white movies, especially film noir.

It wasn't very good, but "The Good German" or whatever that George Clooney movie from a few years ago was is another recent example. It looked good. It just didn't have a story to tell.

The aforementioned dog is my brother's dachshund, Shoogy. I used to think Shoogy's name was spelled something like "Sugy" or "Shuggy" - as a variation of "Sugar". Nope. Just "Shoogy".

*To those DRs sharing photos from/via Facebook:

Make sure you're using the "Public Link" that is provided at the bottom of the page. If you use the URL that pops up in the address bar or one that comes up from right-clicking on the photos, you could end up sharing more than just your photos with people who are not on Facebook - people you don't know.

And if you want to "shorten" the links in order to avoid some unintended Cinemascope, just:

*In the directions below I added an "*" before the commands in order to disable them. Leave them out when you type up your post.

1) Copy the URL
2) In the HHW Reply Box type: [*url=
3) Then Paste the URL right after that equal sign (=).
4) Then close off that "Tab" with :]
5) Then type: [*b]
6) Then type your "title", or "Click Here", etc.
7) Then type [*/b][*/url]

In the end, it should look something like this:

*Again, take out the *'s

[*url=THISISYOURURL][*b]THIS IS YOUR TITLE[*/b][*/url]

Or - this may be clearer - here's what it looks like using () instead of []:

(url=THISISYOURURL)(b)THIS IS YOUR TITLE(/b)(/url)

-And you can also do it via the full Post/Preview box, and clicking on the buttons.

*And you can also use the above method to link to other sites, other pages, reviews, YouTube videos, etc. Not just Facebook photo albums.

Good morning, all! I have a date with my dentist at 10:45, and I'm debating which trip to make in conjunction with it: Toyland or the pharmacy? I have to make both stops today, Toyland to look for a book that may still be sitting on one of the shelves and the pharmacy for prescription refills. I can do one on te way to the clinic and one after, but I haven't decided the order yet.

After that, more work here - that's my day and my weekend!

Thanks, DR FJL, for the concerns! I take an aspirin with my meds every day. I was having a morning where everything I tried to grasp either spilled (cereal and milk) or dropped (pans, cups). Oy!

I am heading off to the pharmacy now. My mind is made up.

The only thing I know about lawn care is how to turn on my automatic sprinkling system (My wife knows how to program it; I don't.) and how to write a check to our gardener, which my wife also does.

I love black-and-white movies, though I think that some movies that were made in black-and-white  back in the 30s and 40s should have been made in color (e.g. YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, THE SEA HAWK).

I think the problem with black-and-white movies made during the past 40 years is that many of them were actually shot on color stock, therefore they look "soft".  The blacks are not not as rich as they were in earlier movies.

Oddly, since the 1969 they built huge dikes that typically hold water but this is an unprecedented event. They only area of Minot has issues with the Souris (Or Mouse River - some US maps list that) is around the 83 viaduct.

The flood waters have already devastated the town of Burlington which is just west of Minot.

There are some who are suspecting that either Canadian officials or the US Army Corps of Engineers screwed up big time. The numbers are not making sense. IMHO, I thought the original numbers were a little low because of the amount of rain that southeastern SK got. I think there will be an investigation after all is said and done. There are actually two Criterion editions, anamorphic and non-anamorphic.  I own the first (non-anamorphic) release.

Umm...I didn't know that.  How can I tell the difference??

I found the other (2006) version and was able to cancel the 1999 version.

Do you know if there are other differences?  Different bonus material, perhaps?

According to Amazon, Aspect Ratio of the original 1999 release is 1.85:1 and on the 2006 release, it's 1.78:1.  Is that really a big difference?

I'm walking my dog yesterday morning.  This woman from YNN stops me and asks if I want to be interviewed by the local news.

The subject: How to care for your lawn during the Texas drought.

http://austin.ynn.com/content/279059/tips-to-help-keep-your-yard-alive-during-drought

The only thing I know about lawn care is how to turn on my automatic sprinkling system (My wife knows how to program it; I don't.) and how to write a check to our gardener, which my wife also does.

  ;D

Very nice. Was that all taped in your yard?

I love black-and-white movies, though I think that some movies that were made in black-and-white  back in the 30s and 40s should have been made in color (e.g. YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, THE SEA HAWK).

I think the problem with black-and-white movies made during the past 40 years is that many of them were actually shot on color stock, therefore they look "soft".  The blacks are not not as rich as they were in earlier movies.

I remember reading a few years ago (I think) about some film maker who wanted to make a black and white film, but he wanted to use actual b&w film stock and not remove the color from a film filmed in color.  All I remember is that he was (at the time) having a very hard time trying to find b&w film stock.  I don't remember if he was able to find any or if he actually made the film...or who he even was.  I always wondered if it really made a difference, but I guess it does.

George, the difference between the two editions is that the first is not anamorphically enhanced.  Therefore the 1.85:1 image plays out in a "window box", i.e., there are black bars on all four sides.  The anamorphically enhanced version will take up the full screen size on your 16x9 television, hence it's listed as 1.78:1, though the film's OAR is 1.85:1, so you'll be missing just a tiny smidge of image (nothing to get concerned about--typically even 1.85:1 Blu-rays are overscanned to play at 1.78:1).

Thanks for the info.  I didn't think that the difference between 1.78 and 1.85 would matter that much, but having it anamorphically enhanced is worth it.

Probably the last television series broadcast in b/w and never filmed for another season in color - was Combat which was canceled at the end of the ABC 66-67 season when all other b/w shows (The Patty Duke Show, The Addams Family, Honey West, Amos Burke-Secret Agent) had been canceled the season before.

Widescreen TVs are 1.78.  If a transfer is done at 1.85 you will see ever so slight black bars at the top and bottom of the image, usually covered by the TVs overscan.  If you were seeing a transfer truly done at 1.78 of a 1.85 film, you would see additional information at the top and bottom of the image - this is precisely what we're going through now, since today I made the decision to do 1.78 for Nudie Musical instead of 1.85 (the way it was shown in theaters).  I find the slight breathing room, especially at the top of the frame is a little nicer on TV.  Also, when a shot comes up with TOO much headroom we just slightly reframe it up.  The reason I decided to do this is because when dealing with a negative rather than a print for transferring, you're seeing additional side information on both sides of the image - this side slight extra but pleasing side info goes away on the print because of the soundtrack area - negatives are silent and the full image is exposed.  Grain lovers should be happy with this transfer - some scenes exhibit more grain than others, mostly due to the way the scene is lit.  I could clean up some of it, but then it wouldn't really look like what we shot and I don't really want to do DNR or edge enhancement or anything like that.

We ran reel one of what we'd done the other day and it looked great.  Then we mushed on to reel two and that took most of the day, but we had enough time left to do half of reel three, so we're now halfway done.  We spent quite a bit of time on The Lights and the Smiles and I have to say that number now looks better than it ever has on any print.  When we did the timed answer print, the technology simply wasn't there to correct milky optical shots or shots where lighting was a problem.  We went shot by shot and boy does it look great.

BK, what you said is almost exactly what I said, though one thing you said confuses me, perhaps I simply am misunderstanding.  I routinely take 1:1 screencaps in discs encoded at 1.85:1 which are overscanned to 1.78:1 when seen on a 16x9 HDTV.  There is not more image, there is slightly less in the 1.78:1 "as seen on tv" version.  While you're correct to say a disc mastered at 1.78:1 from a 1.85:1 source would have slightly more image, overscanned 1.85:1 transfers are missing just a sliver of their image, which is demonstrable just by looking at 1.85:1 screencaps vs. the 1.78:1 overscans.

I'm getting a headache just reading this.  My only point was that you will see slightly more image in a 1.78 transfer of a 1.85 movie.  Overscan is overscan.  So, all I know is that the Nudie transfer contains slightly more information on all four sides - the extra side info is one of the reasons for finally deciding on 1.78 as that ratio balances out the film better, what with that slight extra side info.  One thing I'm loving about doing this transfer is how accurate the color is.  Nudie never really had colors that pop, but since even the best print has faded at least thirty to forty percent, we haven't seen correct color since the film's initial release. Compared to what we're doing here, the DVD is all brown - we thought it was pretty good back in 2002, but it's not a patch on the ASS of what we're able to achieve now.  In the scene where I do my crazy dance you can actually see that my sweater is GREEN.  Fleshtones are accurate and the sequences against blue and yellow are really nice with a whole variety of colorful costumes.

Only do what is comfortable - and if that's zero there is no problem.  But here's what's amusing to me always: I know several extremely wealthy people - one of them, a well-known TV person (not actor) routinely throws money at certain theater companies and in return he gets to be a director there.  This fellow has millions upon millions of dollars.  I've never asked him for spit.  But he got this e-mail and so did the man who ran National Lampoon for many years, also a multi-millionaire - do you think either one of them pledged one dollar.  No.  Which I find reprehensible, actually, since a) they can, and b) I've done many favors for the latter, and have always been very supportive of the former.

DR vixmom - It almost worked. At least the link still works. To see the proper formatting for the link, just click on "quote" to see all the "stuff".

*You just needed to:

1) Put a "]" after "theater"
2) Then add: [*b]Graduation[*/b]
3) Then: [*url]

-Again, don't include the *'s.

Wow!  A moment of silence outside.  We are in day one of the Taste of Tacoma, and with the live music, the traffic, and the hoards walking by it has been very noisy.  Suddenly, for about a minute, there was complete silence.  Either that or I just went deaf.

What planet have I landed on?

Good morning, all! I have a date with my dentist at 10:45, and I'm debating which trip to make in conjunction with it: Toyland or the pharmacy? I have to make both stops today, Toyland to look for a book that may still be sitting on one of the shelves and the pharmacy for prescription refills. I can do one on te way to the clinic and one after, but I haven't decided the order yet.

Your unending madcap adventures, dazzle the mind!
People of your advanced years can't afford to be too sarcastic, dear. You need more humble pie in your diet.

Perhaps I am just jealous that you are still able to walk around.  Something that is getting harder and harder for me to do.

My cousin from Japan said tonight's was the best meal he's had since arriving in the US a week ago.  He and I both ordered the beef tips in mushroom sauce, Richard had a NY strip steak, and the others had mussels.  The Meadows was having their challenges tonight - menu shortage and nonfunctioning credit card machine - but the food was great, as always.

And I'm off to bed.  We are attending 2 weddings in Cincinnati tomorrow - Rob is a groomsman in the first one and Mary Linda's the maid of honor.  The bride is the girl who introduced Rob and Mary Linda and who will be their maid matron of honor in September.  In the second wedding, the groom is a friend of Rob's who was also a student of Richard's and a member of the Scout troop.  Richard and I will attend the first ceremony, but will have to miss that reception in order to get to the second ceremony in time.  Rob and Mary Linda will catch up with us at the second reception.  I think it sounds like a fun day, but Richard just rolls his eyes...

Going to see Silence the Musical, with Mr. Barrett, at 10:30 pm tomorrow (I know: late!  I hope I can take a nap on the bus).   And I was thinking of seeing Celebrity Autobiography beforehand.  Any New Yorkers like to join me for either or both shows?

DR KevinH, I would love to join you for SILENCE, but my schedule is crazy this weekend.
I expect a full report, KevinH

Probably the last television series broadcast in b/w and never filmed for another season in color - was Combat which was canceled at the end of the ABC 66-67 season when all other b/w shows (The Patty Duke Show, The Addams Family, Honey West, Amos Burke-Secret Agent) had been canceled the season before.

Combat. Robert Altman worked on that. (I have these strange obsessions. Sorry.)

I asked if it was the watering expert who was watering, and he said no.

I know ;D

It will be interesting what DR Druxy has to say when he returns. :)

I don't know the woman who was watering those plants at HER house.

I think that she was interviewed first, then the reporter's boss said she needed a 2nd interview, so (I assume) she drove around until she found me.

Any excuse to get on camera, right?

Back from a fun staging rehearsal - just simple crosses, a couple of steps, some hand moves, and some button poses.  She picks up very quickly.  Then we all went to Dino's Pizza where I did manage to eat four slices - as always, best pizza in LA and they thought so, too.  The youngster was especially rambunctious at dinner and I was there with her every step of the way.

Four slices of pepperoni is 1400 calories.  All I'd eaten today was a plain bagel, and I jogged a little less than three miles, so I think I'm more than fine.

Well, I'm leaving.  My friend Margo and I are going to see Summer in the Sixties: a harlequin original musical celebration (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/seasonpages/11/summersixties.html) (you can check out a 2-minute video clip).  It should be lot of fun!  We're going out to dinner first, and then to the theater!

Until later. :D

Tonight, I saw "Summer in the Sixties" and it was a great rock concert of songs from the 1960s.  The performers were all good and a GREAT time was had by all!
