Well, you've read the notes, the notes were French, you know, and now it is time for you to post until the French cows come home.

And here is the new Kritzerland release.  You know how it works - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  This is a wonderful score from one of the greatest film composers who ever lived:

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack:

DRANGO
Music Composed and Conducted by Elmer Bernstein

Drango, a low-budget film from 1957, starred Jeff Chandler, a very underrated actor, and had a terrific supporting cast, including Julie London, Donald Crisp, Ronald Howard, and Joanne Dru, along with John Lupton, Milburn Stone, Parley Baer, and Morris Ankrum.  The film takes place in the months following the Civil War and the script presents the story of bitterness, resentment, and redemption, honestly and simply and without any attempts to sugar coat anything from anyone’s point of view.

Directed by Hall Bartlett, who made several films that have become historic for various reasons – Unchained (the story of Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch – and which gave the world “Unchained Melody”), Zero Hour (which was the inspiration and basis for the classic film comedy Airplane), The Caretakers (which features one of the great Elmer Bernstein scores), and the film of the best-selling book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
One thing Bartlett had as a director was extremely good taste in the composers he chose for his projects – Alex North for Unchained, George Duning for All The Young Men, Neil Diamond and Lee Holdridge for Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and, of course, the great Elmer Bernstein for The Caretakers and Drango.

By the time of Drango, Bernstein had already written two masterpieces of film scoring – The Man With The Golden Arm and The Ten Commandments.  1957 was a busy and incredible year for Bernstein – in addition to Drango, he also scored Men In War, Fear Strikes Out, Sweet Smell Of Success, and The Tin Star.   Drango is a very strong Bernstein score – somber, melancholy, exciting, and, as always, filled with wonderful and unique Bernstein themes.

Drango was issued on a Liberty Records LP.  This is its first official CD release.  There was a specious overseas limited edition release thanks to the European fifty year copyright law, but that CD was mastered from a not very pristine copy of the LP, with ticks and pops and, for some reason, much of the sound coming mostly from the left speaker (how this can happen with a mono LP is anyone’s guess).  This CD was mastered from the original first generation album master housed in the Capitol vaults.   The difference in sound is, of course, major, and it is a thrill to hear this prime Elmer Bernstein score in gorgeous and full-bodied mono sound.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the last week of second week of August – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

We're on Long Island for the weekend and the Internet connection is very sporadic.

Since we stopped paying for AOL Phil and Rose don't have Internet service. It's quite expensive (even with a bundle) to add it to their cable service so they haven't done it yet. They may in the future but right now we're just piggybacking off a signal floating around in the neighborhood. It was almost non-existent yesterday. It's better today but not by much.

Coffee and oatmeal with raisins, walnuts and cinnamon.

Good Morning all

TOD
Here in Quebec they do not speak French, but more of a dialetic called Quebecois and in Montreal it has even evolved into Franglais. That is were they mixed French and English together. English: "Have a good weekend" French: Bon fin de semiane. Franglais: Bon weekend.

I used to speak whatever you want to call it, but since being away for almost 20 years and no real chance to speak it anymor I have lost most of it

The Brain from Planet X / Le cortex de la planète X

presented in an English version and an all-new, locally-produced French adaptation

This smart and fast-paced musical is an affectionate spoof of 1950’s sci-fi movies. In this show, a mutant brain from another planet comes to Earth with the intention of dominating our world. How will it accomplish this sinister task? By destroying the traditional family unit as we know it, that’s how! But what happens when the aliens arrive on Earth and discover their respective libidos for the first time? The show includes toe-tapping music and some of the most delightful, original characters you’ve ever seen in a musical.

playing August 11, 12, 18 and 19
at Pierre-Dupuy Auditorium, 2000 Parthenais

TOD: I used to speak Spanish fluently but that was back in high school. I also studied French and German (which help in the latter from Mom). Picked up a few words of Portuguese in Brazil and Portugal. Now, words just come back whenever a glass of wine or two kickstarts the brain, ou le cortex.

Bonjour tout le monde!  (I think that's right).

I remember some high school French.  As a matter of fact, here is the dialogue from my first class:

Child 1:  Papa, mangeons dans un restaurant ce soir.

Child 2:  Oui, Papa, dinons en ville!

I think that's from about 1971.

Good morning, all! I slept late and I'm pondering the weekend events and possibilities.

DR Jose, my first reaction was that I had got myself signed up to something, whch isn't likely, or that I might have ordered something I'd forgotten about. This is the third month I've been losing money to these two companies, so I think it's something that occurred following the arrival of my new debit card. The card is now closed down, so the charges cannot continue. Of course it screws up several subscriptions and Amazon.com, but it will all work out. It may also be the fallout of some crook on Amazon Marketplace or elsewhere; who knows?  Maybe I'm sending someone's kid to college!

Tonight, DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY, which i look forward to seeing. Today, proofreading the Act Two Finale of EILEEN continues.

I blame Google. -It's amazing what "non-related" sites come up when you're searching for something. And since we all link to others articles, sites and images, that could also end up triggering some visitors to surf where they've never surfed before.

Larry, if your debit card is Visa or MC, you're automatically protected from theft/fraud.  They'll refund the charges if you go after them insisting you didn't make them.  It will help if you have supporting documentation from the vendors.

I know all of that. What I simply want to learn is who these companies are, who authorized the charges - and I'm aware thse might be something I've done - and stop them. Unless, of course, i'm the guilty party. Then I will determine if they continue or not. I'm more frustrated over the loss of $60 ysterday, when I really cannot affords it, and concerned abut possible fraud. Much as I don't like it, I can live with the truth!

I just called the two 800 numbers for these charges and called several times until I had the names correct. They are Shoppingessentialsplus and PrivacymattersIdentity, which both have complaints against them on line for their "deductions" from bank accounts.

Clearly, Privacymaatersidentity had some "30 day trial" I clearly got entangled in during an Intelius friend search:

I have no memory of a "free trial" with anyone since I don't trust anyone. I do suspect Classmates to be behind all of this, and I can find no way to cancel my membership on the site.

Found it under "Help" and I've sent my request for a cancellation of membership.

Since April. The problem is that I order so much online that they got jumbled in with the other charges and I let them slide. In May the damned PrivacyMatterIdentity charged me twice as two different accounts and I believe it's all connected with my new debit card, which arrived in February or March. That debit card is now dead and my bank and the lovely young lady to whom I just spoke have filed dispute on all charges fro the past three months with these two companies.

My son won't open a statement. He had an old account he never used, but he just never closed it. He started getting notices, but wouldn't open it. He finally discovered that some company went through the entire balance of $800 in fees until his account was $80 overdrawn.

Scroll down to June 15.

Oh, that article.   ;D  That's really driving that many people to the site?  Seems odd.

It Is to Laugh, Today's Edition, Department:  Reading the liner notes of this 1960 Instrumentals compilation, they quote a Gramophone review of the Bobby Darin instrumental (yep, instrumental) "Beachcomber," as proving that Mr. Darin is not one of the "three chord" wonders.  "Beachcomber" is a modified blues consisting of, yep, three chords.  :)

Back from various and sundried and she of the Evil Eye has left.  I think I'll eat a couple of tuna sandwiches - already did the four-mile jog, and doing just the sandwiches will enable me to eat a little something later.  But here's an amusing stat: At the Daily Grill last night, I had a "starter salad" - their chopped salad, which was dressed VERY lightly with bleu cheese dressing.  And the oak plank salmon.  I found the calorie count for both items at that restaurant.  Guess which had more?  Yep, the salad.  Unbelievable.  Still my whole meal came to exactly 1500 calories and I'd burned 400 calories so it was fine, but I think I'm done with salads for awhile - they are amongst the most fattening of all foods, so, so much for health.

Avocados are not fattening. They have fat in them, but they actually help one lose weight. So, do olive oil and almonds.

That was according to my doctor and more than a half-dozen reports I've read recently. After taking me off potatoes, corn, white flour and rice, he said to up the avocados, eggs, oil and nuts, all of which would help with weight loss. I haven't lost pounds so far, but I have lost about two inches off my waist, which is more important, since that's where all the bad carbs and sugar go.

There weren't any avocados in the salad, Blanche.  About an ounce of blue cheese crumbles and what couldn't have been more than two tablespoons of bleu cheese dressing and it wasn't exactly a large salad so how that gets to eight hundred calories I know not - I only know I am done with salads for quite a while.

I use credit cards a lot, but keep all the receipts and review my bills carefully. I haven't found many problems, but there were two notable ones: a $160 charge on my Nordstrom bill for size 2 pants (I used to be thin, but was NEVER a size 2!), and the $100 charge to an Internet porn site. Both were taken care of quickly and efficiently, but it is a very unseemly feeling! Not to mention the inconvenience of having to cancel the card and wait for a new one.

Vibes to Elmore for a quick and painless resolution!

I have no memory of a "free trial" with anyone since I don't trust anyone. I do suspect Classmates to be behind all of this, and I can find no way to cancel my membership on the site.

Found it under "Help" and I've sent my request for a cancellation of membership.

Sometimes you get a box that is confusing and essentially no means yes and yes means no.  Not a great way to explain it, but I've learned to read the boxes that pop up very closely.  Perhaps it was one of those tricky ones that appeared on Classmates

I can't imagine doing that.  I only have a debit card (I got rid of my credit card and all my debt except for my mortgage several years ago).  I have to check my balance every few days (a week at the most) and actually balance my checkbook to the penny every couple of weeks.  If there's any discrepancy, I have to go through everything until I find out what I did wrong...the discrepancies are usually because I made a mistake.

Topic of the Day:  none. :-X

Like to speak?  German.  My mom is German, but she never taught us to speak it.  I think she actively worked to lose her accent...there's just a tiny bit left.

Otherwise, I only took one quarter of Spanish at the two-year college that I went to.  I know a few words and can count to ten in German and Spanish.  That's it.

When I went to Western Washington University, I took a class on how to pronounce Italian, German and French so that when we sang, we would sound like we knew what we were doing, but it was only about the pronunciations, not the actual meanings of the words.

Bleu cheese is the culprit if you know for a fact your salad was 800 calories.  A typical salad with lemon dressing or some nonfat dressing is going to be closer to 100 or 200 calories at most.

Does he usually poke it with a knife or fork first?  I would think anything could explode if there wasn't a way for the steam to escape through the rind

bk - According to The Daily Grill Nutritional Information (http://dailygrill.com/menus/nutritional-10-2009.pdf) you consulted, the Grill Chop Salad has:

786 Calories

Of those 786 calories, 663(!) of them come from FAT. -That's 74 grams of TOTAL FAT - with 23 grams of Saturated Fat (a.k.a. the Bad Fat).

-Bleu Cheese Dressing averages about 80 calories per tablespoon.

-One ounce of Bleu Cheese comes in around 100.

Something tells me that the salad probably had more than just 2 tablespoons of bleu cheese dressing and definitely more than 1 ounce of bleu cheese. *A slice of American Cheese contains 100 calories.

FYI: The average 3 ounce slice of bacon contains 50 calories.

Additionally, the Grill Chop Salad has 1556 milligrams of sodium. That's 150% of the RDA.

Next time, just stick to the Mixed Green Salad: 101 Calories (without any dressing), and 1 gram of fat.

*Get the dressing on the side, and just dip your fork in the dressing cup before you take a forkful of salad. You'll be surprised at how much dressing you really use/need that way.

I don't like lemon dressing - I don't even know what that means - how yucky can you get?  And every low-fat dressing I've ever tasted has been horrid.

A "lemon dressing" can be something as simple as just a squeeze of lemon juice over your salad greens. Just the lemon juice. If you need some oil, then a very judicious drizzle of olive oil is a good addition.

I've found that if the vegetables are very fresh, sometimes I don't need any dressing. It's nice to enjoy the taste of the vegetables.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I took French in college. I can no longer converse en français, but I can still read most basic texts.

I also took one semester of German while I was in college. Unfortunately, I took it at the same that I was taking my third semester of French. That was when I discovered what "Romance Language" meant. OY!

And, like DR George, as part of vocal studies in college, I took "Lyric Diction". The class covered English(!), Italian, French, German and a touch of Spanish and Catalan. I keep meaning to reacquaint myself with the IPA (http://www.omniglot.com/writing/ipa.htm) one day.

And now...

I'm trying to decide if I want to drive in for tomorrow's rehearsal or just park at the Metro station and take the train in.

This morning, I ended being about 20 minutes late due to an accident on I-66. Thankfully, I had just passed an exit ramp when the traffic came to a standstill, and when the police started signaling drivers to go ahead and turn around(!) and go back to the exit ramp, I didn't have far to go.

Tomorrow night, there is work scheduled on the outbound side of I-66, and it might be easier and less stressful just to take the train in. -And since parking is free tomorrow, well... I shall see how I feel about it in the morning.

I have returned from DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY, which has a wonderful cast, a beautiful set and costumes, and a lovely, if self-indulgent, score by Maury Yeston. I think cutting 2-3 numbers would improve the show enormously and pick up the pace of Act Two. Put them on the cast recording as Appendices, but prune. That's my advice.

I like the cast a lot. Rebecca Luker has a wonderful scene with Death in Act Two and a song about her dead son Roberto that had me weeping, and my friend Simon is excellent as the old doctor. I didn't get to see Don Stephenson after the show, but it was nice to see Jill Paice, who's the beautiful reason for a holiday by Death. She looks fantastic in those 20's gowns and sounds like an angel. I also saw Glory Crampton, who's standing by for Rebecca Luker, and she looked fantastic.

The whole cast sings very well, and the score is very well performed.  The very bizarre Max von Essen, whom i once considered a friend and since 2001 simply consider weird, was good in a role that I thought suited him very aptly, and I was knocked over by how wonderful Julian Ovenden is in the title role; he's a handsome man with a good physique that will have our DR MBarnum stalking geriatric centers for him in around 40 years.

I loved the opening number; were they driving back from an engagement party when you saw it?

I think the cast is hoping the reviews are good and they go from a limited run to an open one. I would like to see it again. It's quite stylish. I got to meet Doug Hughes, to whom I gushed about how much I loved Barney and Helen, and Kevin Stites, who did a great job with the band. I met Max in 1998, and we were friendly; then he came to London to record a number in John McGlinn's  LEAVE iT TO JANE in 2001 and behaved like a total asshole. I had called his hotel room and left him a message, to which he didn't respond. the next day he came to Abbey Road Studio and sat across from me and didn't speak all morning, and then after he recorded, before he headed back to Heathrow, he started talking to me, saying things like "don't I know you? weren't we friends?"

My DH was away for several weeks in a place where he had a television to watch. He was telling me about this trial. I guess he was kinda bored.

Jane, I had an eggplant explode in the oven once. The memory is vague, but I think I didn't pierce it adequately beforehand.

I do not like bleu cheese. Or even blue cheese. (Very hard to type "bleu".)

I haven't watched a lot, but have heard bits and pieces.  I do think it's a winable defense case.  The defense may have lost it with their tactics, though.  I really want to hear how they sum it up. I'm recording it from HLN so I can listen to it when I get home.  I doubt they will get through all the arguments in the 2 hours I can listen while driving to the lake

TOD:

I studied Spanish, German, and Japanese in middle school/high school.

I remember very little about Spanish, can read German and understand a bit of it, and never made much headway with Japanese.

Hindi I am picking up on. Don't speak it too well, but when I watch a Hindi film that has no subtitles, I can sometimes figure out what they are saying.

As for favorite languages to hear: Japanese and Hindi both sound beautiful to me, when spoken.

Big Lots put out a big dump of $5 dvds. I found Universal's Mae West collection in it...5 of her movies...NIGHT AFTER NIGHT, I'M NO ANGEL, GOING TO TOWN, GO WEST YOUNG MAN, and MY LITTLE CHICKADEE...all 5 for just $5!

The Marlon Brando and Marlene Deitrich sets were there also, but I did not buy them.

I just returned a short while ago from my 75 year old Indian lady friend's house.

She made a very nice Indian dinner and even had on a lovely sari!

She has a lot of Indian statuary in her house...various Hindu gods and whatnot...and she told me that when some Jehovah's Witnesses came to her home recently they told her she would be going to hell (they thought she was Hindu....actually she is not, she is an athiest). She told them that was Ok by her, it would be more fun there anyhow.

Back from a local production of Avenue Q.  It was quite good, although the singing could have been better.  It was in a small theatre, using the NY puppets and what looked like part of the original set (design).  The band was ok. A friend of mine played Brian and he was great.  The gal that played Kate Monster failed to wow me with "It's a Fine, Fine Line" - so there were no tears.

Half way through Act One I realized that the ex and I saw Avenue Q in NYC exactly 5 years ago today... our first Broadway show together.  Stuff like that tugs at my heart, but the lackluster "It's a Fine Fine Line" kinda killed the emotion.

And now, I'm off.  I have to take a shower and get dressed to go to the movies to see "Larry Crowne" with my friend Margo and her friend Marsha.  After that, we're all going to The Olive Garden for dinner.

Well, we all liked "Larry Crowne."  It was funny and touching but not sappy.  After the movie, dinner was quite delightful.  I had the Tour of Italy (http://www.olivegarden.com/menu/dinner/Tour-of-Italy/408311-1448/), which included fettuccine alfredo, chicken parmigiana and lasagna.  I took home the lasagna and left room in my tummy for their delicious lemon cream cake (http://www.olivegarden.com/menu/dessert/Lemon-Cream-Cake/396750-1448/). :D

I seriously almost bought either a Triple Chocolate Strata torta (http://www.olivegarden.com/menu/dessert/Triple-Chocolate-Strata/396752-1448/) or a Black Tie Mousse Cake (http://www.olivegarden.com/menu/dessert/Black-Tie-Mousse-Cake/396751-1448/) to take home with me, but I didn't.
