Title: THE FOURTH OF JULY, FIREWORKS, AND WIENERS
Post by: bk on July 04, 2011, 12:06:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had some fireworks, were posted on the fourth of July, and were written by a wiener, and now it is time for you to post until the fourth of July cows come home.

montreal has a fireworks festival for at least the past 20 years.

but the most spectacular one was in monaco 1980. ! believe it was done for a tv variety series hosted by one of john wayne's son whose name escapes me at the moment

Hope all is well with everyone.

Back when I was a kid in Soap Lake, WA (where we had a summer home), they had the most fantastic fireworks displays over the lake.  Really amazing.

Hopefully i will get to go swimming this week (actual swimming not just playing with my nieces or exercising). Have not done that in the outdoor pool yet. Hopefully i can get them to put a lane up for me.

Good morning, all! I stayed up late watching the second season of THE DUCHESS OF DUKE STREET and I slept in this morning. I feel pretty good, and I plan to enjoy the holiday by doing as little as possible.

I have nothing else to report

TOD:   The fireworks in DC.   I actually went to the Mall a few times in my first few years in DC.   I don't think I could face the crowds anymore.

I used to live on the 14th floor of an apartment building in Alexandria.  It had a pretty good view of the fireworks in DC in the distance.

TOD - in 1963, my parents and I were on a camping vacation on Mt. Desert Island, Maine, and we went into Bar Harbor for the 4th of July fireworks.  They went off over the harbor and all the yachts and fishing boats blew their horns in appreciation.

And, the year Middfest celebrated Mexico the closing festivities featured a display of Mexican fireworks.  They'd had an awful time getting them through customs in Cincinnati, but they were spectacular and very different from what we're used to here in the US.

My favorite fireworks display were some I didn't even watch. Instead, I watched the refugee children as they experienced fireworks. At first, they hid under the table, until we explained they were not bombs. Then the looks of wonder on their faces as they watched the beautiful colors of the fireworks for the first time.

TOD: When I was a kid, my family went to Germany to visit Mom's side of the family. While we were there, we were in Heidelberg on the Fourth. There was a tremendous fireworks display, largely for the American troops and their families, and it was set off against the backdrop of the castle ruins. It was spectacular. Haven't seen the likes of it since.

I actually brought some work home "from the office" to take care of today. I'll probably get to that later this afternoon. I just need to futz with the layout of my keyboard book. Thankfully(?), since we start our actual tech rehearsals tomorrow with a "10 out of 12", I'll have plenty of down time to continue futzing with it during rehearsal. -And the orchestra is not back with the cast until Wednesday night, so I'll have more time during Wednesday's day rehearsal too, if needed.

bk - The next time you hit Taco Bell, order the "Fresco Style" tacos - the menu board may even list them under "The Drive-Thru Diet Menu". They're just "dressed" with salsa and lettuce - no cheese, thus less fat. -And that salsa is pretty tasty. *And they both have just 150 calories. -At least according to their website.

On July 4, 1976, Middletown not only celebrated the Bicentennial, but opened the new city building.  There was a huge parade down Central Avenue, in which our community theater group had a wonderful float - American Theater: 200 Years of American Life.  This is the (almost) entire cast:

FJL, I didn't name Kritzerland after Leslie - I was having trouble giving my new creation, Benjamin, a last name - I happened to be on one of those boards and there was a thread "What is Leslie Kritzer up to."  The minute I saw Kritzer I knew it was perfect for Benjamin.  I called her, made a lunch date (I happened to be going to NY that week), and told her I was using her last name.  She was delighted.

A few months ago a fellow did a benefit for Michelle Nicastro back in whatever town her college was in.  He'd written me several times and I'd sent him a personal remembrance for the program, along with some photos.  Apparently it went very well.  I got an e-mail from him this morning asking for my help and support (not financial) for an LA version of it to be held at the Catalina Jazz club - that venue seemed mighty strange to me because I think it only seats around 100 or 150 people, tops.  He asked for me to either get the word out or give him my contact list.

Now, as some may or may not know, I tried to do a tribute evening for Michelle right after she passed.  I went to a VERY wealthy TV producer (and now theater director) and asked if he'd help fund it.  This man gives money to everything (he has pots of it), but apparently only if it somehow benefits him, so he said no (he hasn't even had the good taste to donate twenty bucks to the Kickstarter thing and believe me when you have twenty MILLION it would be a nice show of friendship to part with twenty bucks).  So, that didn't happen.  The very last performance Michelle ever gave was in the Menken/Schwartz benefit I did.

Then I get another e-mail from someone named Shelly Goldstein, a cabaret performer, who informs everyone on her blast list that she'd producing this evening, and that it's being directed by a fellow who's been in the cabaret world for quite some time.  The minute I saw his name I wanted to throw up on the ground.  This guy eventually wormed his way into a record label we don't mention around here, completely run it into the ground, and then was let go by the owners.  He IMd me years later asking if I could forgive him and I responded saying I'd put the whole thing away and that he didn't need my forgiveness.  There are many performers and people in the business who really don't like this fellow.  He came to one of our Gardenia shows, saw what we were doing, and - wait for it - he now his HIS own night at another club.  He heard about what we were doing with the thirteen-year-old and - wait for it - he's now offering a class to young teens about cabaret performing.

I wrote back the guy from earlier and told him I could not in good conscience support the event, given that this guy is directing, and I told him that I didn't think Michelle would be too happy about it either, since she was very aware of what that whole situation was about and how it affected me.  I also asked him why he wouldn't have come to me first, since this is what I do, since I had a VERY close relationship with Michelle dating back to 1990 - we'll see if he answers.

DR Elmore designed and oversaw the making of all the costumes.  My dress was gorgeous, complete with corset and bustle:

I had forgotten how fantastic you looked in that sucker!
...

I could use a corset like that to wear under my dress for Rob & Mary Linda's wedding.  No bustle, though...

She went to Northwestern in Chicago.

Haven't seen the likes of it sense.

I'm surprised to hear this, but it was a nice gesture. I really liked Heidelberg.

There are far worse musicals, many of which have run longer, too. O! Calcutta! comes to mind. Starlight Express.

In my collection, I can see titles like "Ankles Aweigh" and "The Athenian Touch," which were certainly less well written. Even "The Worst" is worse.

Rehearsal went well - she just marked it but had all the ography we did last time down pat.  Then her father made us some barbecue wieners and there was cole slaw and potato salad and baked beans.  I had two dogs (total calories 320), two helpings of potato salad (made with low-fat mayo) and cole slaw (no calories - made with just slaw and a little orange juice).  So, all in I've probably had less than eight hundred calories and I burned four hundred so that means I can now go eat a piece of chocolate peanut butter cake.

We had a delightful time at the cookout.  Mike and Katie provided, in addition to the venue, make-your-own-shish kabobs for the main course.  The rest of us brought side dishes and desserts.  Nice mix of people we knew and people we just met tonight.

Where is everybody indeed.  Most unseemly.  You'd think it was the fourth of July or something.

Everyone is gone and I am exhausted.  I feel like I've eaten five pounds of food which is, I think, the result of the dieting and a shrunken tummy.

I was head of makeup dept - my then boyfriend played Caesar Rodney

Were you really in school in 1776?. If you were, you look fantastic!!!

thank you thank you --- I guess I'm  not too bad for 254....

I am sitting in my recliner with the cats.  Fireworks will soon start about 3 blocks from here, but I don' t think I'll deal with the bugs to watch them.  it was a nice show last night over the lake.  That's good enough for me this year.   I'll stay home and make sure the cats don't freak out when the big booms start

Good Evening!

Well... I've spent most of today watching TV - mainly "How the States Got Their Shapes" (http://www.history.com/shows/how-the-states-got-their-shapes) on The History Channel, various shows on The Cooking Channel, and then A Capitol Fourth on PBS.

Meanwhile.... My scores have sat on the kitchen table...

Well...

Tomorrow's rehearsal is a "10 out of 12": 11:00am to 11:00pm - with a dinner(/nap) break from 4:00pm-6:00pm. Wednesday too. The rest of the week follows a similar schedule with rehearsals in the afternoon followed by run and/or previews in the evening. In other words, it's gonna be a long week. So...

Goodnight.

Thanks!  We actually had a great time last night sailing on my brother's boat.  It was just the three of us and my sister's husband.  It was a beautiful night and we had a very peaceful sail.  One of the nicest times we've had together in a long time

Vixmom, the fireworks are allowed to be sold by state law, but most of the cities have banned them. As has my county in unincorporated areas, the US Forest land, etc.

Impromptu grilling get-together tonight. We did steaks, mushrooms and my entire eggplant harvest (2) on the grill, plus more dishes than necessary, including potatoes, green beans, a cucumber salad, a mixed green salad, a tomato-cucumber salad, corn on the cob, and who knows what all else. Caramel brownies, ice cream and blueberries for dessert.

All for just seven people and thrown together last night.

I shall enjoy the leftovers for lunch the next few days.

Still, I missed the fireworks.

Hearing lots of fireworks.  Boo jumped on my lap when the big ones were going off at the Country Club.  Now that those are over, the cats seem fine. I could open the windows, but I think it will be quieter with the ac on and the windows closed.  I got very little sleep last night as the neighbors on both sides of my parent's place were partying very late and the hide a bed was very uncomforatble.

I had 4th of July dinner with a bunch of people I didn't know on the roof garden, atop the 8th floor of my apartment building. The food was tasty, but I didn't know hardly anyone.

I suspect a few residents invited several family members and friends for the free eats.

JRand, have you seen this film? I think you would enjoy it...mainly a samurai story, until the monster strikes at the end.

I need to get the sequels now!

Party at my sister's was fun.  DD Ben was such a good boy.  The food was amazing, the company was fun and we all had a great time.  I even got some work done later in the evening.

I returned to Foster City to see the city in full 4th of July mode.  It's one of the cities in the bay area that does a fireworks show each year.  So, I gave DD Ben his dinner and headed downstairs and watched the show from the comfort of the grass near the pool  It's a little less than a mile away from the actual show, so it was a good view.  Saw some people that I actually know that live in my complex, so that was fun.  Next year, I'm going to provide a coffee stand and a soundtrack to the show that we can listen to.   :)

When I post the new notes, I'm then going to put seven Nudie Musical cover options up for comment.  What appeals, what doesn't.  Some have quotes, some don't.  The color is slightly different between versions of the same cover and things can be moved around (in terms of quotes and cast names) - I actually like them all, but am leaning towards one in particular, albeit with quotes in different colors.
