Well, you've read the notes, the notes, like the gun, were quick, and now it is time for you to post until the quick cows come home.

Good Morning!

Greetings from NYC!

We had a good show last night, albeit with a shockingly small audience. But since some schools in the area start back up tomorrow, and since some schools starts back up next week, I'm guessing most families were either on their way back or heading to vacation.

But it was a good show, and a friend I hadn't seen in a few years was there tonight, and we had a great time catching up.

My 11:45pm bus which usually doesn't end up leaving until 12:30am, actually left at 11:46pm. And since there was no traffic on the way up, we pulled up to Penn Station at 3:30am, and I was back home on the UES at 3:45am.

And now it's time for me to grab a few more hours of sleep. -I zonked out on the bus somewhere between DC and Baltimore and didn't wake up until we were at the end of the Turnpike. Anyhoo...

Goodnight.

Good morning, all! Today we need the vibes because this day's two recording sessions will determine how we stand for the next two days: wew have too much music to record in too little time and today will determine our statuis for finishing up this week. I've been kicking and screaming for too long, but our financial man - to whom I would never offer financial, legal, or business advice since I know next to nothing - has no problems in making decisions about recording budgets and schedules without input from people who've worked in the territory for years. Both the record producer and I are concerned, but Judy says if all runs smoothly today, we're fine. Keep them vibes coming!

We don't begin until 3, so around 2pm I will walk down to the National Concert Hall and set up shop. Our sessions are 3-6, 7-10. Tomorrow, it's 4-7 and 8-11. Rehearsal went well yesterday, and the orchestra is really solid. I think our only tricky spots are the dialogue sections, since we've had too few rehearsalks and I've never had the cast together at the same time. Oy!

Last night, Judy and I had a yummilicious dinner at Hugo's, a wonderful restaurant around the corner from the hotel on Bidgood Street; we both had salmon on garlic potatoes with salad greens, a starter of crab ravioli and a glass of chardonnay. We quaked with fear and how great the cast is.

Okay, I'm signing off. I wish everyone a good day of happiness, success, and health!

TOD: I love the way Vincente Minnelli uses color, especially in "The Band Wagon" and "The Pirate." There are some greens and purples that just leap out of the screen in ways I don't recall seeing in other movies, then or now.

Fellini played around with color beautifully in "Juliet of the Spirit," though I think he was more interested in the color looking good than in the movie.

TOD:

Perhaps I'm off-base on this, but I think that if you are aware of the color when you are watching a movie, then there is something wrong with the movie.

Same thing with actors.  If, while I'm watching a film, I think to myself, "What a great performance," then it's not.

Sorry for being E&T again--Mom had a slight set back (her gall bladder drain fell out) that blossomed into a week long nightmare of a hospital stay.  Without going into details, I can tell y'all that Mom is now back at the rehab center back on the road to getting back on her feet.

Thanks to DR FJL, I can't get The Trolley Song out of me head...

I could add MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS to the list of fave color movies, but I guess I could add just about all of the MGM color musicals--they certainly knew how to do color!

If at times I don't think that the "On The Town" song in ON THE TOWN doesn't quite cut it, I still find myself pulled into the number by those incredibly colorful costumes worn by Vera, Ann and Betty.

I've been up since nine.  Called paypal to do what needed to be done and I have to say once again that they have been great about this.  The money will be back in my account in two days - they sent me something to answer via e-mail which I already did.  I did end up calling Walmart last night and the Aurora police department.  They don't care.  They could catch these people and they don't care.  It's that simple.  If they started caring and arrests were made, maybe that would curb some of this, but apparently they don't want to.  There's a lawsuit waiting to happen.  The Aurora police said I had to file identity theft in my own city - I said that made no sense since the crime happened in their city and that there was video and all they had to do was go look.  The guy said that was the way the law was and there was nothing to be done about it.  So, these mo-fos get away with it because - NO ONE CARES.

JMK - This is what the person who uploaded the "close-up video" wrote.

"  Uploaded by MicheleBell1 on Dec 20, 2009
Performed by Judy Garland and Chorus in the film 'Meet Me in St. Louis', 1944. A High Quality, Full Screen Close Up.This video was a pleasure to make. ...'The Trolley Song' is such a well known song of Judy's - from MMISL & concert tours - that I didn't expect to find anything new or fresh about it. But I did! As a close up, I can see the intricacies of Judy's face, her eyes ... & of all the close up videos I've done, this was the most surprising gift. I hadn't seen the movement & facial expressions of Judy as clearly. She's glowing ... Some interesting facts:
Ralph Blaine wrote the lyrics. He was told to write a song about trolleys for the movie, and was having a hard time coming up with inspiration. He finally came up with some lyrics when he went to the library and found a children's book with a picture of a St. Louis trolley car with the caption: "Clang, clang, clang went the jolly little trolley."  "

So, last Thursday when we did our drive-around in Cincinnati looking at apartment complexes, Rob misplaced his keys.  He was pretty sure he had them when we left and was afraid he'd set them on the top of the car before we pulled away.  We'd looked in the street up to about half a mile away to no avail and we'd searched the car as thoroughly as we could.  Richard took it to our service place today and they removed the back seat and  - VOILA! - there were Rob's keys!  We are all greatly relieved.

Oh my goodness, TCB!  I came on here because news had reached my ears that you were in the midst of some challenging times.  I had no idea how challenging they had become!  I know we have been remiss in getting together, but I am now off work for three weeks and would love the chance to do anything I can to help.  Toby and I are at your disposal, please call if you need to!

Much love and good vibes!

In yesterday's sermon, Fr. Richard made reference to Charleton Heston as Moses in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and today we received that movie from Netflix.  He said he'd ordered it to verify that his reference was correct.  We're about an hour into it and I find the acting pretty bad.

Then I picked up an important envelope, did banking, but one package that was supposed to be delivered today hasn't (it's guaranteed so no cost to me if they're late) - it still could arrive, I suppose - thank you Ontrac, a company that I would never use to ship anything.

T.O.D.

Although I appreciate the effect that Josh Logan was striving to achieve, the color in SOUTH PACIFIC is just plain annoying to me.  Had he resisted the urge to go all out with each color, and had he gone with more subtlety, he might have achieved an incredible effect.

and there's this interesting side-by-side of the real film vs. the Judy davis recreation in the TV bio

Have we heard from Jane today?

Hi.  We had a nice time in Portland.  Saturday was the hottest day & after the drive Keith didn't want to go anywhere.  Bryan met us at the hotel along the river where we sat in rocking chairs on the porch outside the bar for drinks & appetizers.  It was so cool & relaxing, with a nice breeze, we stayed for dinner.  After dinner we went for a walk along the river before Bryan left to meet friends.

Hey Jane, how was Portland?

Nice thanks.  We got to spend all Sunday with Bryan walking around & then meeting friends, little Eli & her parents, for dinner.

I learned something I wish I had known years ago.  Eli was complaining her stomach hurt & her mother asked if she wanted Dr. Lassner (Bryan) to check her out.  She climbed into his lap & he told her to use one finger & point to where it hurt.  Eli pointed to her arm so he kissed it & made it better. :)  Apparently children say their stomach no matter where the pain is & often point to their head.

... an absolutely challenging ambitus.

This being one of the things I don't understand.

And don't try to explain it. You would waste too much time and it won't work anyway.

T.O.D.

Although I appreciate the effect that Josh Logan was striving to achieve, the color in SOUTH PACIFIC is just plain annoying to me.  Had he resisted the urge to go all out with each color, and had he gone with more subtlety, he might have achieved an incredible effect.

Josh Logan may have been a great stage director, but film was not his medium.

He had some terrific material to work with, but none of his movies were enhanced by his direction.

DR Pogue, just curious:  are you British?  I notice you always spell words the British way, e.g., colour.

Or the Canadian way. That is how we spell colour. Although if I'm typing that here i would usually type color.

I think i'm enjoying So you think you can dance Canada more than the US version this year. It helps that Mary Murphy has been a judge every week (except for US finale week).

It's Restaurant Week here this week and it's already wearing me out after two days.

Because no one ever reads my posts and therefore would not have seen my comment a few months ago about this, without cheating, name the one song that Lieber-Stoller wrote with Mann-Weil, and tell us why they collaborated.
I read your posts. But not necessarily in order. So, I'm reading this one first before anything else.

Awaiting the arrival of Vicki, Joan, and John.
I love Vicki Lewis. That woman can really make laugh. I remember one "News Radio" episode when she tried to coin the phrase "Bitch cakes." And her singing voice, which I know thanks to you, BK, is spectacular.

JULIET OF THE SPIRITS was Fellini's first color film and he is on record as stating he was pretty much playing with his new toy.  :)
That is what it feels like.

Isn't Canada part of the United Kingdom, or was there a secession I didn't hear about.  :)

I am tired. I was supposed to do some work tonight, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.  This is not such a good thing as we are way behind at the office and the brief is due tomorrow.  I'll get it done, I always do, but not tonight.

Ambitus is the technical term (technical term) for a song's range.  Listen to the bridge of SO MANY STARS for some insanely huge leaps from note to note. Lani Hall is channeling Garland in her iconic rendition, but I can't wait to hear all of Babs' version.

And...

I need to get to bed. Today really was quite wonderful, but I walked around a lot, more than I have in DC. I also have to head back down to DC a little earlier than planned due to a change in the rehearsal schedule tomorrow.  So...

Goodnight.

We had a rather incredible dinner here in the little town of Lincoln City.  We went to a Thai restaurant and had a kind of surly older waiter who was obviously one of the owners, but then his wife, the cook, came out and just had the most amazing conversation with us and her husband became rather friendly.  But the amazing part is it turns out they're the parents of Ben Kaplan  (http://www.cityofcollegedreams.org/content/about-ben-kaplan), and they gave us all sorts of info on getting scholarships for the kids.  We got a special deal on one of Ben's books and his CD-ROM set.  The weird thing is Betsy had read an article about Ben and was interested in his info, but hadn't been able to remember his name.

It's shocking the hoops one has to jump through with SAG on these web series.  Endless paperwork, contracts, forms - no one makes ANY money - the budget is 0.  But one must do all this work and I think it's why more people don't use SAG talent on these - it's a big pain in the butt cheeks, plus they are VERY slow.  I got them everything they asked for over a week ahead of our NY shoot.  They didn't get back to me with further needs until one business day before the shoot.  I sent an e-mail in response asking for clarification on one point.  That e-mail went unanswered despite them knowing we were shooting.  I sent two follow-up e-mails, both went unanswered.  I called.  Call not returned.  I finally e-mailed the original gal to whom I'd sent that original batch of paperwork and told her I was getting fed up and that actors were waiting for their paperwork.  After that e-mail, the guy called back in about ten seconds.  He was more than a little uppity, I have to say.  But I got the rest of the paperwork he wanted done and I'm still confused on two forms - so, I'll attempt to speak to him in the morning so he can walk me through those, and then I'm driving all this crap to their office and dropping it off.  Thankfully, the contracts all got e-mailed to NY so people are signing those now.
