Well, you've read the notes, the notes called me madam, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently doing a production of Call Me MOOdam.

Good morning, all! I slept this morning until 6:30, so I'm about back to my usual sleeping patttern. The rain, whch is a real downpour, was a nice sound to fall asleep to and I slept quite nicely. I had some dream involving printed music, maybe an orchestra, and it seemed to take place sometime in the past, say over 100 years ago.

I'm thinking of scrambling some eggs for breakfast and then I will tidy up the two weeks' worth of magazines I read yesterday. My writing table needs organization, and then I'll do some work.

Yesterday afternoon, my beloved goddaughter Charlotte and her boyfriend Ken came by to visit. He's a very nice young man - he calls himself a farmboy - from Lansing, Michigan, and I liked him very much. He's the first of her young callers I feel actually likes her; the others were all rather shitty young abusers-in-training. Her father thinks they were "dark" souls attracted by Charlotte's intelligence, general good nature and generosity, but I just saw them as gnomes she had been attracted to because they, like her, were interested in fantasy books and conventions. I thought the last one was a psycho and I worried, when she wised up and told him it was over, that he was going to become a horrible stalker and cause some major damage. Ken, who's a tall, handsome young blond, seems to be on the good side; he's going to graduate school for a Ph.D, in mythology and folklore; he wants to be a college professor and occasionally work on theatre. I wish them both well.

I guess that's all my news for the moment.

Thanks to all for the vibes for my sister.....and of course I send vibes to DR DRUXY for kitty Annie.

News at my house is that parakeet Abby was found deceased this morning on the bottom of her cage.....no apparent cause of demise.....  She tried to get under the paper towels on the bottom of her cage and hide herself in her last minutes, I surmise.  She was covered as usual....and was fine all day yesterday.

And now she is a little brass box out in the Pet Semetary with many other animals.

FEMA:  Well, let's check the map.  Here is the danger spot.

Obama to FEMA: It's awfully close.....well, I think we should make the announcement.

FEMA:  Yes sir.  Attention!  Attention.  Learn this!  Sunday's performance of THE GERSHWINS' PORGY AND BESS has been canceled.  Saturday's performance of DONKEY PROMENADE will continue as scheduled.

Watching the local news reports... It seems that most of the storm damage hit 10 miles east of here. Lots of trees down, low level flooding and power outages. There are also some frightening pics of some streets in DC covered in downed trees and sparking power lines.

I stayed up late reading thinking that I could sleep in today....the weather radio went off before 8:00 with a thunderstorm warning, so I got up, made some pancakes and waited out the brief storm that of course lost it's severe status as soon as I was totally awake....so...thinking about going back to bed....I'll read a little and take a nap.

Things are calm and quiet in our neck of the woods.

There is flooding in other parts of the city and some residual damage, trees down, etc. but generally it just rained. There is flooding out on Long Island but not in Anthony's parents area.

We will stay in today though we may decided to go to the diner for dinner later if the weather is decent.

The eye - or rather what was left of it - is already in New England. I believe it made a fast by NYC around 10:00am.

Reading the reportage of the "hurricane" in NYC is amusing.  They have nothing to really report so they've resorted to a lot of "if this happened, this could happen," and "streets were flooded with water reaching the tires of cars" accompanied by a photograph of a car with water barely touching the bottom of the tires.  Then they kind of sheepishly admit that the thing is probably done.

I shall offer a somewhat perverse observation:

In balance, the "major weather event'" actually saved lives;the lives lost to "weather" were a lot fewer than the lives saved by the reduction in transportation accidents.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone here or elsewhere who doesn't understand that the storm caused deaths and havoc - not in NEW YORK, however.  What some of us are commenting on is the hysteria of the press in continuing to try and make a mountain out of what was most assuredly a small hill in NEW YORK.  It's the same old, same old with these people.  We all understand that elsewhere the storm caused death and problems.  The deaths I've read about, at least, all could have been avoided if people had not gotten into their cars or been walking on the streets during the biggest part of the problem.  Trees falling on cars - it's not too smart to be in a car during a hurricane that has had a LOT of publicity (no surprises).  A man walking in a hurricane killed by a falling tree - why would anyone be walking in a hurricane?  It's all regrettable, but one feels that some of the death could have been avoided.

We are back from Lima, where many people were back in church after summer vacations.  We did a couple of errands, made a hospital visit to a 95-year-old parishioner, and had lunch before heading home.  I am relieved to see so many east coasters here and on Facebook and wondering if anyone has heard from DR Vixmom?

DR JRand - I'm so sorry to hear about the death of your sweet parakeet Abby.  Going through that with our Horus (the Egyptian Falcon God) made me never want another pet.

Thanks DR's elmore, TCB & Jennifer.  Some high school students stopped by & removed most of the water, which is quickly filling back up.  Unfortunately they can't return & have moved on to help the next person.  Her well tank has also been knocked over & it appears 3 trees, including a very large one, are leaning on her house.

I find it interesting at times on FB when comments are made that indicate only a portion of the post was read.  A friend suggested she get a generator, yet she has said she can't afford one and the roads are impassable even if she could.

My friend, Bill, who now lives in Dallas, Georgia sent me some photos along with my birthday card.  This is from the 1973 (?) production of HELLO, DOLLY!  Believe it or not, I am the string bean on the left, Bill is the one with the hat in front of his face, and the lovely lady on the right was one of my two great loves of my life.

When I downloaded my ebook from the library I had 3 options for the number of days I wanted to keep the book.  Since there doesn't seem to be a renewal option I chose the most days offered.  Had I known the first night I would read all but 20 pages I would have gone with a two day check out.  Now I want to "return" the book for the next person on the queue to read it.  It seems there isn't a "return" option.  No wonder it takes so long for the ebooks to become available.

The librarian said the state set it up this way.  She will call tomorrow & find out if there is a way to remove the book early.

I'm curious how this works in other states.

I went to see Oklahoma today with friends.  I had planned on sending a message to DR Jose this morning, but as I just mentioned, I didn't have internet.   The show was terrific!   The actor playing Will Parker was especially good--what a dancer!

The new Arena Stage is great--I'm sure there's not a bad seat in the house.  And the orchestra is above the stage.  My friends and I made it over to the orchestra area after the show and we had a brief chat with DR Jose.  It was great seeing him again!

bk - So... What if Irene had "fulfilled" the models and predictions and clobbered New York City? -It's weather. It will do what it does, and just have to be thankful that this time, it did not do what it was supposed(?) to do.

*There are some parts of Lower Manhattan that are still under water. Flooded streets, flooded basements. And the reports from Long Island are not exactly "light". Thankfully, the death toll is on the very low sides of things.

For NYC, most of the forecasted damage from the floods was structural. There was never a forecast for "mass destruction and numerous deaths". The evacuations were part of a larger plan to not only sure the safety of everyone, but to make the initial stages of clean up easier to manage. The public transit system was shut down so that the efforts to get it back up and running after the storm would not be hampered by train cars and busses stranded on the roads and tracks.

I'm guessing, unfortunately, that DR vixmom is dealing with another flooded basement. Hopefully, the whole vix family is all right. However, I'm sure they are greatly inconvenienced right now in terms on money, quality of life and mental and physical stress.

Yes, the newscasters are still trying to make something out of Irene. In a way they are still building things up. In other ways, they are not.

Between shows today, a friend of Molly Smith, the Artistic Director of Arena Stage, cooked dinner for the company. It was quite a spread: Grilled Chicken Breasts with a light sauce/gravy, Succotash (made with fresh corn and lima beans), Marinated Artichoke Salad, Quinoa, and a Tomato and Watermelon Salad.  Not only was it delicious, but it was also very healthy! -Oh, and there were brownies and Rice Krispy Treats for dessert. :)

And...

In the audience at tonight's show were my sister-in-law; my niece, Alyssa; my nephew, John Michael... And Claudia, John's girlfriend(!?!?).

I actually think it's the first show of mine that John and Alyssa have seen. They had a great time. They visited the "schoolhouse" during intermission, and the trombone player talked with John since John has been playing trombone for about two years now. After the show, I took them around the walk-around, and one of the stagehands even gave Alyssa a ride in the surrey!

The librarian said the state set it up this way.  She will call tomorrow & find out if there is a way to remove the book early.

I'm curious how this works in other states.

That's the way our library system works, too.  Once a talking or e-book checked out, it's checked out for the full three weeks and it can't be checked in.  The only thing that can happen (from what I understand) is that if you've put in a request for the title and you get notified that it's now available, but you don't actually check it out, you can choose to not take it and it'll go to the next person.
