Well, you've read the notes, the notes remembered, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they remember everything because they have an excellent MOOmory.

I finished Gates yesterday afternoon and then went out for drinks with two colleagues after work. We had a great time talking and laughing and reminiscing. I'll still be there in 5 years so maybe I'll do it again in 2016.

And now on to the day, which has sprinkles (of the rain variety, not the candy variety) and grey clouds.

I must go over to the NYU Dental Clinic during my lunch hour and make a payment on my crown and then it's back to work and then the laundry after work. Usually it's a Friday chore but we are busy on Friday.

Later gaters.

I got up and went into the garden to feed the fish and found a massive spider web at my own eye height across the path. Now I believe in live and let live so I don’t like to interfere with spiders and their webs but as I couldn’t get to the pond without disturbing it, I brushed the cobweb aside and went on to feed the fish. Back indoors I felt bits of spider web around my hands and arms which was difficult to get rid of and then, looking in a mirror, I saw a massive fat spider sitting on the side of my neck. Ugh! It must have taken a flying leap on me when I brushed away the web. I quickly knocked it off me……. but it was a nasty moment. I nearly became something like one of those ALIEN victims –  me ending up being wrapped in a great big cocoon!

Favorite Charlton Heston films? Certainly THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, TOUCH OF EVIL, BEN-HUR, EL CID, THE WAR LORD, OMEGA MAN, PLANET OF THE APES, WILL PENNY. I'll also add THE WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE which is a good Hitchcockian mystery and which is largely forgotten today. I saw it when first released in 1959 but haven't seen it in many years. maybe I should get the DVD to see how well it holds up. I met Charlton Heston once when he was in London. He was very courteous - a true gentleman.

Good morning, all! I had another round of Drama Book Shop dreams, in which I was alphabetizing books and got into a fight with a clerk I disliked over how it should be accomplished. I remember little more than that this morning.

This morning I have to return a set of orchestra parts for ROBERTA to Tams-Witmark and then I will stop at the NYPL. That's my day.

DR JANE the card is finished so no further charges can be made on it, even by me.  And I went through the list and they have removed all of the unauthorized charges - if there are others on my bill, I just have to circle them on my statement when I make my next payment.

Of course, I cannot access my card now since the account has been compromised, and won't be able to until I get my new card.....so I can't order my Ma & Pa Kettle DVD set until then.

DR JRand61, you have my sympathy. Do you know in what locations these unauthorized transactions occurred? When I got my new debit card in March, having to replace the info with various vendors became a real nuisance, then, in July, I discovered fraudulent charges from two vendors deducted every month and had to have that card canceled. That cancellation screwed up my payments, and now things seem to be fine. Of course, I also now check my bank balances every day!

That's more or less what I said in my book about him.

Heston was in many classic films...but they were successful because of the films...not because of his presence in them.

There were many other actors who could have played those roles (e.g. Burt Lancaster was the first choice to play Ben-Hur), and the box-office would have been exactly the same.

Films that depended on CH's presence flopped (e.g. WILL PENNY, perhaps his finest performance).

As for the Topic of the Day...

The only two Charlton Heston films that come to mind right now are the ones that I would at least once a year while I was grade school:

"The Ten Commandments"
"A Man for All Seasons" (the 1988 TV version)

*I went to a private/Catholic/parochial school: St. Thomas More Elementary. ;)

In other news...

DR JRand - The other day you asked when I would be on the podium for Oklahoma!, well... Alas, due to various factors, it just didn't work out for this run. The major factor was all the various cast injuries, understudies and replacements. Too many "new" people at various times throughout the run. The other factor was that my designated sub was only available at certain times during the run. Thankfully, he was available to cover me when I flew out for my brother's wedding, as well as when I went to SETC. The one "clear" week that would have worked for everyone was the week that he got married(!), so... And then he went on a two-week honeymoon to Hawaii. -And by the time he got back that was when our new Vivien/Laurie understudy was going into the show.

Am I disappointed? Well, I guess I am. A little. However, as I found out when I audited the conducting chair, with the way the Union's CBA is set up with Arena, I would have actually made less(!) money whenever I would have conducted than when I played. So... Like I said, a little. ;)

I'm just thankful that I had 14-weeks of work. -Which is 14 more weeks than some of my fellow musician-friends have had this year.

Thank You, DR Laura. I'm doing fine. I just keep getting those very annoying "twinges" every now and then. I had kidney stones a few years ago, and had forgotten just how long the symptoms can last, the "process" can take. Thankfully, it doesn't appear that I need any invasive medical procedures. I just need to make sure I'm staying hydrated. *And I'm thankful that my uncle/godfather is a gastroenterologist and still fits me in for quick check-ups when I'm in town.

Christopher Priest is one of my favorite authors and I've just bought his latest book THE ISLANDERS. His writing is very clever and invariably explores themes of alternate realities in which things are never quite what the reader thinks they are. His book THE PRESTIGE was made into a successful film but I disliked the film which was terribly disappointing compared to the book.

The DVD of the movie does have English subtitles, although I don't recall if the songs are subtitled or not. Sometimes DVD companies subtitle the songs and sometimes not...I don't know why.

A good guess is that Helen is singing about love to Manoj Kumar. Actually, about love and how one's love can fade or go away...since her character is murdered shortly after this song.

Jose, I would normally say in 1977 when Nudie was released there and we took their censor board to court, but I think I've been there since and I just can't remember when or why, unless it was when I was a spokesperson for that software company in 1988.  But I think I may have even been there after that.

Well... If you need any restaurant recommendations... ;)

Helen is the singer flirting with the male singer. The male singer is engaged to the annoyed woman (who is annoyed because she brought her father to the club and is watching her boyfriend flirting with Helen). Helen gets murdered after this song.

Is that right, MBarnum?

Don't pass any stones during the show!!!  VIBES!!!!!

Thankfully(?), I'm just passing some very small ones.  At least I hope I am. Most of my discomfort is from the resultant back pain. Thankfully, I discovered Salonpas a few weeks ago. Ahh..

<<<<<DOCTOR RANT>>>>>

I am so upset after today's doctor's appointment that I think I my head may explode at any minute.  This surgeon that has basically kept me waiting for almost ten weeks total; tells me today that my back was already fused (Duh!) and he didn't think another surgery would help me.  He is going to refer me to a doctor that can try giving me an injection.  Other than that, he had no answers, None!   His office will call me in about a week and tell me where the referral has been sent.  The P. A. (physician assistant) handed me a sticky note and said that I might want to research this subject online.  The note said, "Adjacent Segment Disease."  When I looked it up it seems that she was trying to hint that my problem might be in my head.  Apparently, doctors disagree on whether or not this disease exists.  One source said that many patients are told that the disks surrounding where they had the fusion surgery may end up failing as well; and that sometimes patients expect it to happen so it does.  I went and saw my own doctor today and when I told him about this "disease," he said, "What the fuck is that supposed to mean?  I have never heard of it before."  And every time I mentioned to the surgeon that the MRI showed severe spinal stenosis, the P.A. kept correcting me and saying Adjacent Segment Disease.  So I am apparently effin crazy as well as crippled.

Well, I must leave.  I'm going to the WCPA to be a wine server for an event:  26 Feet of Art (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/upcoming-events/2011/9/29/26-feet-of-art-gallery-reception.html):

Quote
The Washington Center kicks off it's CenterFest Celebration 2011 with an art reception and wine tasting as we bring back the popular online auction for 26 Feet of Art! Showcasing 26 artists who have each contributed one 12"x12" artwork that will be on display in The Center Galleries; the finest wines will be available from local vintners with accompanying hors d'oeuvres. The online auction will run through ArtsWalk and will close October 9, 2011.

This event is free!

I don't have to be there until 7:30, but I need to get there earlier, so that I can find a parking spot.

Until later!

DR Cillaliz - Not to stir up too much "stuff" here, but other Presidents have deported people and broken up families in the process. -I'm also guessing that there happen to be more illegal immigrants in the U.S. right now than there were 10, 15, 20 years ago. Has anyone come up with a percentage rather than a number. *And doesn't the fault/responsibility lie with Congress too?

Do you happen to know if other countries deal with such an influx of undocumented citizens? Canada? Australia?
