I'm not really into musicals but two film musicals which I did enjoy, and which I believe were big flops, were PAINT YOUR WAGON and MAN OF LA MANCHA.

DR Michael Barnum

Regarding your actress from the 50's

Is she a member of SAG or any other union? They might have some kind of program.
There's The Motion Picture Home (I believe that's the name)
There also must be some kind of governmental at the state or federal level.

Also she might want to consider making her situation know I am sure there that someone kind soul might be able to help her out. I've seen this happen in the past. She might be able to get some work and get some needed insurance and other benefits.

TOD: I could write endlessly on flop musicals I enjoy. Stage shows that come to mind:
Make a Wish (entire score)
The Nervous Set (The Ballad of the Sad Young Men, Fun Life)
Breakfast at Tiffany's (Good Girls Go to Heaven)
Prettybelle (almost entire score)
The Human Comedy
Dance a Little Closer (Dance a Little Closer, Never Want to See You Again, Anyone Who Loves, There's Always One You Can't Forget)
Many of the songs that came from Unsung Musicals, especially the pieces from Welcome to the Club

On film:
At Long Last Love and all that Cole Porter

FJL, the pills are a double dose of what I was on before the insulin. Apparently, the oral insulin doesn't really work, so it's not being prescribed too much. (Or perhaps there are not enough pharmaceutical reps pushing the oral insulin, but that's another matter.)

(These are post The Sound of Music when they died at the box they were widely reported. If there we pre TSOM I am not aware of them)

In No Particular Order

STAR!
Paint Your Wagon
Xanadu
Little SHop Of Horrors
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
bedknobs & Broomsticks
Hello, Dolly!
Sweet Charity
Darling Lili

and perhaps my top guilty pleasure: Can't Stop The Music

I also would like to see if ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER also restored to its original length, but I won't hold my breath as I believe La Streisand owns the rights to the footage

Good morning, all! I was ready to head to the McGlinnventory, but our paralegal Geri sent me an email at 6:50am saying their power was out and she needed to stay in Connecticut this morning. So, I will work on my projects for the Encores! Gala today, maybe do some work on THE RED MILL as well.

Yesterday I had a great lunch with my beloved Rob Berman, and much was discussed and much was laughed at. I gave him my impressions of the original Broadway MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (saw 4th preview and final performance), and we talked about what Encores! is doing with the material. Before lunch, I had a nice meeting with Joshie at the Encores! office to look over his reduction of Saint-Saens' Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix for the Encores! Gala in a couple of weeks. After that we had a meeting with Rob and Ben Whitely, who will direct the chorus for the gala.  I've got a little bit of work to help him with on the gala: harp parts for a couple of items and a chunk of the Finale. He's promised to get me the choral arrangement in the next couple of days. Today I'll write harp parts.

DR MBarnum, I'm sorry to hear about your destitute friend, but I'm more sorry to hear about Laurie. She's a good lady.

I just got one of my holy grail albums on CD and I've put it on my office computer. I will take it home at lunchtime and add it to the shelf.

I could listen to Bye, Bye Blackbird over and over again. It's the complete recording. The LP and the cassette both had things cut off due to time constraints. It was 1973 after all. I am torn about the musical version of LOST HORIZON.  I enjoy the original film and book.   I just don't like the songs.....and it could be the terrible choreography - the mediocre singer - OR the pedestrian direction......put them together and I find it hard to sit through.

It's fine until the first song.....and then.....

Maybe I will wait and buy a used copy sometime.

Favorite flop musicals?

Difficult question.

I really like LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and SWEET CHARITY.

I enjoy the Gene Kelly number in the otherwise forgettable XANADU.

I think that Sophia Loren was quite good in the problematic MAN OF LA MANCHA.  Unfortunately, Peter O'Toole couldn't sing.

Howard Keel, who did the play many times, said that, in the movie, Cervates should have been played by Christopher Lee.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Merrily We Roll Along
The Human Comedy
- "Long Past Sunset" always makes me cry.
Lestat - I'm actually surprised that Sir Elton John did not release an official pop version of "Sail Me Away". I'm sure it would have a life as an "American Idol" or "The X-Factor" anthem.

As for the other actress, she actually is still going on auditions, but has not gotten anything recently. Jeudi evening greetings!  We are back from a lovely day of sightseeing on the Ile de la Cite and the river edge of the Latin Quarter.  Before we left home, I downloaded 4 Rick Steves podcasts, including his Historic Paris Walk, and put them on both of my iPods.  Today, we did the historic walk and toured Notre Dame and Sainte Chapelle and some of the Latin Quarter.  We had a delightful dejeuner directly across from Notre Dame.  Je suis fatigue!

Betsy has kindly (?) given me the cold which Zach kindly (?) gave her.  Oy.

If it's not worth doing to excess, it's not worth doing. ;)

or...

I love my friends, and they love me.
We're just as close as we can be.
And just because we really care,
Whatever we get...we share!

I got it from Agnes, she got it from Jim.
We all agreed it must have been Louise who gave it to him.
She got it from Harry, who got it from Marie.
And everybody knows that Marie got it from me!

Giles got it from Daphne, she got it from Joan,
Who picked it up in County Cork a'kissin the Blarney Stone.
Pierre got it from Shiela, who must've brough it there.
He got it from Francois and Jacques, aha!...Lucky Pierre.

Max got it from Edith, who gets it every spring.
She got it from her daddy who just gives her everything.
She then got it from Daniel, whose spaniel has it now.
Our dentist even got it and we're still wondering how.

Ah, but I got it from Agnes...or maybe it was Sue
Or Millie or Jilly or Billy or Willie, it doesn't matter who.
It might have been at the club or at the pub or in the loo,
And if you will be my friend, then I might
---mind you, I said might!
---give it to you!

thanks for the heads up on that. Love Sarah Vaughn. Love that song. I will never forget reading William Kennedy's "Ironweed" and getting to the end, where the song plays a prominent part of the conclusion. As it would happen, I was listening to a Bobby Short album and he started to sing the song at the same time. I was in tears by the time I finished.

Richard and I ventured out for a bit in search of some dinner and headed in the direction of the hotel where Francois works.  On the way we found a lovely charcuterie and decided to return there after seeking out Francois.  He was, indeed, working tonight and we had a lovely visit.  We returned to la charcuterie and bought grapes, a chicken & veggie salad, and a small container of chocolate sorbet.  We came back and watched BONES reruns, dubbed in French, while we ate.

Can't be...I'm not in Oregon, yet.  Tomorrow morning, my sister, my niece and I are going to visit our cousin in Coquille, Oregon for the weekend. :D

I hope that I'll be able to check in here every once in a while.  I might, with my Kindle, if I can find an unprotected Wi-Fi connection and the time to navigate through HHW on the Kindle...it's VERY slow going.

I watched a bit of LOST HORIZON last night.  I'm stunned with all the extras that are on this MOD dvd.
I saw LOST HORIZON on its first theatrical run, so, I am looking forward to watching the uncut version - though I did sneak a peak at the "Living Together, Growing Together" fertility dance last night.  It is a jaw-dropping, but colorful, experience.

FLOP MUSICAL FILMS I LOVE:
HALF A SIXPENCE
DARLING LILI
XANADU
MOVIE, MOVIE
THE LITTLE PRICE
AT LONG LAST LOVE
and, dare I say it:
CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC.

I don't remember. Was it "Movie" or was it "Movie" that was the musical?

I am torn about the musical version of LOST HORIZON.  I enjoy the original film and book.   I just don't like the songs.....and it could be the terrible choreography - the mediocre singer - OR the pedestrian direction......put them together and I find it hard to sit through.

It's fine until the first song.....and then.....

But the first song comes over the opening credits?

And speaking of The Grass Harp and the song "Floozies"...

Trivia Time!

Russ Thacker played "Collin Talbo" in The Grass Harp, and sang "Floozies". The Grass Harp closed after seven performances. Russ Thacker also starred in five other Broadway musicals:

Two of them ran less than five performances: Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, Dear Oscar
Two of them closed on opening night: Home Sweet Homer, Heathen!
And one closed before it opened: Me Jack, You Jill

Waited about an hour on a sidewalk on Sunset Blvd for the man to come and change my tire, which he did. And he was a nice man  ;)

Once that was done I finished my journey to Amoeba Music where I found a goldmine of Bollywood soundtracks, obscure Big Band, and a couple of Arabic pop cds. A pretty good haul, and most of it was from the $1.99 and $2.99 mark down sections, and for every 4 mark down CDs you get one free! I like free!

After my trek to Amoeba I headed back to the valley via Laurel Canyon which was VERY slow going. I think it took about 30 minutes to get over the hill, normally about a 5 minuted or so drive.

Hit Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee and bought some nice photos for upcoming and potential interviews. By this time it was about 5:30 and I begun to find myself a bit on the hungry side. I was going to run back to my hotel and then call DR Jeanne, as we hadn't had a chance to meet while I was here, to see if she was free for dinner but I got so hungry I pulled over on Lankersham in North Hollywood and went into the closest restaurant, which was a Greek place and ate by myself. In fact I was the only person in the place. The food was quite good...although not in the hefty portions I am used to, which is probably for the better...haven't gotten much excercise this week, you know.

Title: Re: THE SHOOTIST

The day is finally done!  The second shoot went very well, save for having to endure some very atypical noise on my patio.  It's normally completely quiet out there, but not today.  Today, the neighbor, who is NEVER home, was having a bee problem (several dead ones ended up in my yard - thank you) and the bee killers were VERY loud.  We had to ask her to ask them to please talk more quietly - they complied.   Then instead of the one plane going over every three hours or so, we must have had twenty in a one-hour period.  Add to that some sirens and it became comical after a while.  But the footage is funny and good.  I then had to leave and I had a twenty minute window to shove a bacon cheeseburger down my gaping hungry maw - I went to a jernt a block from the rehearsal studio - it was deelish.  Then we had our rehearsal and I had to go pick up sheet music from the Xerox place then go directly down to LACC (mucho traffic, natch), and I auditioned three boys and one girl.  Two of the boys I cast, knowing I can work with their raw talent - and since the girls were already cast (this gal couldn't attend due to bronchitis) I cast this girl to cover and she'll get to do two matinees.  That seemed fair.  So, the third boy we can bring in and I'll get someone really strong.

Then I finally came home.

THE DOVEKEEPERS is Alice Hoffman's new novel, which I just downloaded today for my e-reader, and is about four women during the Roman siege of Masada.  It looks quite promising.

I shall have to get these   you always know about the best books!!

And those are six more musicals that I ever appeared on Broadway with :-)

Sitting on Sunset Blvd with a flat tire. Not quite how I wanted to spend my day, but the people watching is fantastic

Isn't sitting on Sunset Blvd a little dangerous? Wouldn't it be safer to sit down on the sidewalk?  :-)
