Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of four tracks, and now it is time for you to post until the first four cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SCROBICULATE!
-
Why is George just sitting there like so much fish?
-
DR Ginny: Love your Christmas tree. It looks fabulous.
-
It's morning and it's bright and sunny after yesterday's torrential deluge.
-
TOD:
I've always wondered what happened to the film Outback which I saw when it was released in 1971 and which I've never seen since. Made in Australia it was a fascinating, allegorical film about a city dweller who finds himself stuck in a small uncivilised town.
EDIT - After writing that I have found out that the Australian title was Wake in Fright and the film was considered lost for many years until 2009 and that it is now available on DVD and Blu-ray in Australia.
-
good morning to all.
-
TOD
I would like to see the 1945 film Why Girls Leave Home because it has the only Academy Award nominated song, The Cat and THe Canary, I have never heard.
I would also like to see two other obscure films that had songs, which I have heard, nominated for Academy Awards: The Little Ark and Half A House.
The latter DR DRUXY conducted the Oscar campain for the song "A World There Never Was" by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster
-
Good morning, all.
-
The book was sent to the publisher last night. Now, I can't wait for their editing questions.
-
TOD: Sun Valley Serenade is a favorite of mine at Christmas that has never been released on DVD. I have seen it, though, so I don't think that quite counts.
I think I would like to see a DVD release of the telecast of some of those made-for-TV musicals that BK included on his "Prime Time" album, like Cole Porter's "Aladdin" and Hugh Martin's "Hans Brinker."
-
Laura, my condolences on Aunt Pearl.
-
So, KevinH, would I, as a copy editor, have enjoyed "Close Up Space"? We don't get many plays.
-
Ginny, that was one beautiful tree. How tall is it?
-
The book was sent to the publisher last night. Now, I can't wait for their editing questions.
Congrats, John G!!!
-
And the word of the day is: SCROBICULATE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: INTO THE GROOVE
-
Good morning. Thank you all for your condolences.
-
I was just catching up. We're so sorry to hear your sad news, Laura.
-
Condolences to the friends and family of Aunt Pearl.
-
I loved all of the pictures yesterday.....
DR GINNY'S tree and the picture from World of Wisdom. thanks for posting, I lost that in one of my computer crashes before I was smart enough to buy an external hard drive.
And of course DR CILLA LIZ'S spiffy newspaper photo!!!
-
Thanks to DR KEVIN H for the continuing Broadway reports.....and travel vibes for him today.
-
TOD:
to begin with
The High Powered Rifle - the only Allison Hayes film I have never seen
The Party Crashers - with Ms. Frances Farmer's last appearance, available home-grown, but very DARK.
-
I say - let's do a Kickstarter and have a CD with an orchestra!!!
-
It's raining and I had a weird dream and am up - for the time being. Perhaps I'll go back to bed soon, since again I didn't get to sleep until two and four hours is not enough.
-
Re: the new Guy Haines album-- I guess it depends what those other 10 songs are and what would be the best arrangements of them. Some songs are just fine with a small group; some are better witht the whole orchestra.
-
Well, either way it won't be a huge orchestra, but one can get very nice sound out of a ten-piece group if the orchestrator knows what he's doing.
-
Monday morning greetings! It's just past 9am and the morning has already been frustrating. I'm trying to help my Mom straighten out the mess she's made with her checking account and I don't have all the details. She's not going to like what I have to tell her and I have a feeling the day is going to get worse before it gets better.
-
Thank you, DRs Doug R, John G, and JRand, for the nice comments about our Christmas tree. It's 7 feet tall (artificial) and even Richard has to stand on a stool to put the crown on top. That crown was made about 40 years ago by my grandmother.
-
Good morning, all! I've been awake for nearly two hours. Discounting the time to bathe and dress, most of my time was spent answering an email from The Man From Philadelphia. I had bizarre dreams about FOLLIES - I rememebr Rebecca Luker was in the dream with me and we were backstae - and a nighmare that left me unsettled around 12:50 AM.
Today, I have the Lincoln Center NYPL and Richard Rodgers' personal scrapboks, which I've never looked at before. I've got to look at 1925 and 1926 for info on DEAREST ENEMY, but I'd like to look at the one for this epic flop CHEE-CHEE as well. I have more work (and more and more to follow that) on ROBERTA here, and work on prep for the May release of the Herbert songs and lieder.
DR Ginny, you'll have to photograph the tree again so we can see the tree's crown. It looks quite lovely.
DR Laura, I send my condolences to you and the family of Aunt Pearl.
DR John G, good news on the book.
More coffee!
-
Thank you, all.
-
DR JRand61, when does Mercury go out of retrograde? It can't be soon enough.
-
I think Guy Haines should sing "Laura."
-

-
Per DR Elmore's request:
-
My Birding Buddy and I decided to postpone our trip to the sewage ponds because of rain. This is the closest we will get to snow, so I think we will make a little Christmas around here.
-
Ginny inspired me.
-
We had live trees when I was a kid. We got a fake one when they came out. It was HORRIBLE looking.
One year when my in-laws came out for Christmas, we got a real tree. It was so pretty on the lot. We cut the required inch off the bottom and put it in water right away. It dried out completely before Christmas. We're lucky we didn't burn the house down. I was so sick with a sore throat for a couple of weeks. I had two courses of antibiotics and a negative strep test. My throat hurt so bad I cried. Oddly, it cleared up the day I hauled the dead tree out to the alley. So no more real trees for me.
When Sandra was about seven we had a little potted Christmas tree that we planted in the front yard. It is about 35 feet tall now.
-
Thank you, all.
Condolences, Laura.
-
TOD:
Aside from some of this year's releases that haven't come to DVD yet, I don't think that there is any movie that I want to see that I haven't seen.
I watched THE CONSTANT NYMPH last night, which (I believe) was a "Holy Grail" for some people.
It was okay, but nothing that I could get excited about.
Frankly, I think that many of these "lost" films (e.g. Lon Chaney's LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT) are better off "lost".
If they were ever found, I think that people would be very disappointed.
-
Thanks, Elmore and FJL.
-
Well, the reviews for ON A CLEAR DAY appear to be mostly negative. I wonder how long it will limp through the holidays.
-
Congratulations on your book, John G. I hope the editors are kind.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I have jet lag. Whoa! ::)
-
However, speaking of (quasi) Frances Farmer films, I've never been able to find FIVE WERE CHOSEN, the Budd Schulberg Mexican film she was hired to do but never finished. (It was Ricardo Montalban's debut). I'd love to see if she's in any master shots.
-
I believe I was the first person to procure and identify Frances in a very brief montage sequence from NO ESCAPE (AKA I ESCAPED FROM THE GESTAPO) the Monogram film she worked on for one day before the law caught up with her. The King Brothers didn't want to waste those few frames of film. ;)
-
Condolences for DR Laura.
-
So, KevinH, would I, as a copy editor, have enjoyed "Close Up Space"? We don't get many plays.
First, DR JohnG, congrats on the book!
To answer your question, I think you'd like the beginning of the play, as I did, where David Hyde Pierce's character edits (using an overhead projector) letters and emails from the principal of the school his daughter is attending.
I thought it was going to be a wacky but warm show about the relationship of a father and daughter (as a matter of fact, I saw a commercial on TV this morning that kind of suggested that). It's not.
-
Well, I'm here (at JFK) quite early for my 12:40 pm flight. I thought it was better to be safe than sorry, to coin a phrase. I had heard there was going to be a traffic tie-up by the livery cab drivers who are protesting in front of the Governor's East Side office. Since my airport bus was leaving from Grand Central Station o, on the East side, I was a little concerned.
-
Oh, I meant to mention the audience members at Chinglish. First of all, it's amazing how many different accents and languages you hear (I guess especially at this time of year since people come here to shop for Christmast). So I sat down. The man to my left was hogging the entire armrest (even on my side). Then a group of four people came in to my right. Well, I had to have a little room for my arms. Luckily the man on my left reached down to get something on the floor, so I put my arm against the armrest (not on top). He still put his arm over quite a bit, but it was okay. For a minute I thought it might turn it to the episode of King of Queens when Arthur is having an armrest fight with Carrie's boss.
I couldn't quite determine the language the people on my right were speaking: Portuguese?, Romanian?). Anyway, at intermission, I stood up and said "excuse me." The people seemed quite puzzled as to why I needed to get out, but the man next to me explained (in English, for some reason): "wants pee-pee."

I was happy to see USA TODAY gave it 3 out out of 4 stars, but the NY Times is definitely negative on the whole. I agree that it doesn't make sense in some places, but I overlooked that and enjoyed the great songs.

DR ELMORE the Mercury retrograde ends TOMORROW!
-
Yes I did read you PC post DR JMK - but since I am not a millionaire and don't have NettFlicks - it was not available to me.
I thought I saw Frances and pointed her out to you in NO ESCAPE......but that was MANY full moons ago......you may indeed be correct.

Wouldn't I have to go through security again? They only had one lane open yet there were about 10 workers. One of them did open up a separate lane for the guys delivering sodas and juice drinks to the shops inside the security area.
Thanks to all for the travel vibes!
-
There weren't many OTHER master shots in THAT film......for her to sneak into.....but that outfit Mary Brian wore looked awfully familiar. I still think it's the one Frances was wearing when she was hauled into Santa Monica court the next day.
-
There goes my latest "quote" screw-up.
-
Or rather.....one like it. She seems to be wearing a similar one in the one still you have posted from the movie. And didn't you reveal that on that particular day she also had a fight with the director because she refused to be tied up?

Wow, I had no idea Debbie Allen choreographed for Liza!

I actually must say I like Liza's singing on the PSB collaborations more than I do most of her other stuff from that era.
-
Thanks to all. It doesn't feel like I've finished anything. I've just moved on to the neglected school work. have written 2,500 words this morning.
-
DR Laura, sorry to hear about Aunt Pearl. 106 is quite an achievement.
-
Congrats on the book, DR John G!

I went to see HUGO today. What a wonderful film - brilliantly designed and directed and a 'must see' for anyone who loves the history of film. And what a sad reflection on currrent tastes that the film has failed to attract large audiences. I've read comments from many people who say it's slow and boring - such remarks simply demonstrate yet again that modern audiences cannot appreciate films with dialogue but just want constant action and fast cutting.

He enjoyed it very much, but he did say it could lose 15-20 minutes.

I'm looking forward to the chance to go see a movie next week. If I survive until then. And "Hugo" is at the top of the list right now.

I went back to sleep around eight and just got up, so I think I got around seven hours of sleep somehow.

It's raining pretty hard, so I guess no jog again.

We have a balmy 43 degrees here....which feels like summer time compared to last weekend.

My cousin has a lead on a place for Zumba in the Neighborhood!!! Hopefully it will work out and we will be up and running again in a week or so.

Why is George just sitting there like so much fish?
Sorry...I wasn't paying attention. I was watching episodes of "Torchwood: Miracle Day." They're quite engrossing.
I got the PAL, region 2 DVD from England but these DVDs have real wonky menus. :P

Back from NYPL. Those Richard Rodgers scrapbooks are works of art. I looked at the three Helen Ford shows in volumes 2 (DEAREST ENEMY), 3 (PEGGY-ANN), and 4 (CHEE-CHEE). I also looked at souvenir programs for GARRICK GAIETIES, PRESENT ARMS, and SPRING IS HERE. I want to proceed now through the other 55 volumes.

I love scrapbooks.

Sounds like fun. Even if "Chee-Chee" has that horrible storyline.
-
As your typical castration musicals go, that is.
-
TOD: A few more which I've thought of:
The Big Fisherman (1959) I've never seen this 70mm Biblical epic which I don't think had a very wide release.
The Deep Blue Sea (1955) with Vivien Leigh and Kenneth More. I saw this once on TV about 20 years ago. It seems to have disappeared since.
23 Paces to Baker Street (1956). Excellent mystery-thriller set in foggy London. Only seems to be available on DVD in Spain. A good Fox film for the Twilight Time Blu-ray treatment.
Lady L (1965) Starry cast headed by Sophia Loren. An enjoyable film which I saw when first released but another one which has disappeared.

CHEE-CHEE only has a horrible storyline if you find a musical about avoiding castration horrible. The Philadelphia critics, warning their readers that the musical was adult and highly sophisticated, were much kinder to the show than some of the NY critics, who were scandalized - scandalized, I tell you! - and became vocally abusive over it. The score is glorious and I think the book - which is very similar to CANDIDE, with the son being beaten, forced into slavery, etc while his wife has sex with everyone in charge to protect them both - quite interesting. Of course, after reading the source novel, The Son of the Grand Eunuch, I was amazed that in 1928 anyone thought there was a musical in it!
Rodgers' score is quite wonderful. John McGlinn was going to present the three Helen Ford musicals at Carnegie Recital Hall in the mid-1980s, but it's my memory that Dorothy Rodgers hated CHEE-CHEE so much that she refused to let it be performed.
-
Sounds like my kind of show!

Good Evening!
Well... I managed to make my way around the city without stumbling too much. I will admit that it took me a couple of minutes to get re-acclimated to the NYC busses and subways, but I was back in the swing of things in no time. However, I did somehow manage to cut my lip while holding a piece of paper in my mouth. ::)

Thank you, DR George! I spent several hours with Mom that included swearing (me), crying (her), and a trip to our local Social Security office. We solved one major problem, though, and I think she'll sleep better tonight. I hope I've convinced her to call me right away when a problem comes up rather than letting it fester for a week - that helps no one.
One word of advice - don't lose your checkbook...

And since I'm supposed to go to a comedy show later tonight with my friend, Brendan, I believe I'm going to close my eyes for a few minutes for a cat nap.

My mom had her purse stolen...just before she and my dad went to Germany for a month-long visit...and checks had been written by the thief! She had to cancel the account AND get a new credit card (that also was taken, but fortunately, not used).

After years of looking, on a lark (and with a slightly different search term), I found a(n) hilarious old Scholastic poster I had probably when I was 10 or 11 that was like a Mad Magazine letter to Santa. It had the rather provocative item of "Knitted Pot Holders (if you know what I mean)", which I couldn't believe had gotten past the Scholastic censors. If there were Scholastic censors.
-
From Cilla:
Did you download it to your computer?
After nothing else worked I attempted to. I forgot to check this morning if it is on my Nook yet. This is taking an exceptionally long time. Keith said the charge hasn't gone through yet.
With the Nook Color you aren't suppose to download to your computer.
I don't have Nook Color. I just shop from my nook and download it into my nook.

Condolences to DR Laura
-
That sounds about the same. I thought with the regular Nook you download to your computer first.
-
DR's Cill & Laura I think you need this for your cats.

You can, but you don't have to.
-
Thanks for explaining that.

Druxy's former client Gigi Perreau has a nice color pic in the 1961-62 Fall Preview issue of TV Guide.

Synanon arrived at my house today.
My copy arrived here at work today, too! :D I bought some CDs from www.soundofmusic-shop.de that also arrived today: the international cast recording of Evita (http://www.soundofmusic-shop.de/s04.php?shopid=s04&sp=en&cur=eur&ag=1&pp=aa&bnr=12713) with Florence Lacey (I saw her in the national tour in Seattle!), and the German cast recordings of both Cabaret (http://www.soundofmusic-shop.de/s04.php?shopid=s04&sp=en&cur=eur&ag=1&pp=aa&bnr=10200) and Into the Woods (http://www.soundofmusic-shop.de/s04.php?shopid=s04&sp=en&cur=eur&ag=1&pp=aa&bnr=15929). ;D

I forgot to mention the goggles worked great! I swam for about an hour staying in the lap lanes the entire time. It is still difficult for me to turn my head to breathe, as much now due to my left shoulder as my right one. I stop about half way, where the water is shallow enough to stand, catch some air & continue on.
I need ear plugs that make me deaf, combine that with goggles vs glasses & I have to keep asking people to tell me the time. Since I can't always hear their response I need them to indicate using their fingers. It is rather embarrassing. Don't suggest I take out the ear plug. I did that today & once wet it doesn't fit back in as well. I never used to be bothered by water in my ears. ::)

Back from NYC--and after a 3 hour "nap" it's time to say goodnight!
-
Welcome home DR Kevin & goodnight.
-
Ate a turkey sandwich and onion rings for lunch, did my banking, picked up a couple of packages, and then had the first of our four work sessions. The singer did this first show for me in its entirety. She's very talented, but I thought the show was not well-ordered or thought out, with many confusing things. So, I took notes and then went over them with her and she agreed with all of them and is willing to do the work necessary to restructure and fix, so that will happen over a week in January and then she'll try out the new version at the Gardenia. Tomorrow they'll do show two for me and it will be the same kind of situation.
-
I'll go finish watching a motion picture now.
-
Last night we showed the Vixter "'Rear Window" we almost lost her in the slow start but soon it had her on the edge of her seat

Could you imagine that movie being made today?

Yes...it was called Disturbia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486822/).

And on that note (D#), I'm going home.
Until later.

I've fnally finished "Hot spot" the first of the ROBERTA reconstructions, watched THE CLOSER, and read the booklet for the new Paragon Ragtime Orchestra recording of TREEMONISHA. Much as I admire a lot of their leader Rick Benjamn's work, I sure find a lot of his theories on theatre orchestration from the late 1880s through the 1920s a lot of cockamamie. He constantly confuses the tiny palm court orchestrations for 10-12 players the real mccoy, and he misses the authentic theatre orchestrations sitting in archive at the NYPL, the Museumof the city of New York, the Amherst Library and other places.
He should read Russell Bennett's "Instrumentally Speaking" and learn a few things.

well I must get me to bed
good night one and all

Is there a way to read it in English? My German is a little rusty.

This was our tenth anniversary of knowing each other. It was right around this time that she first IMd me, thanks to dear reader Jane. Tomorrow's notes will be dedicated to her.
-
Horrible news. I had many, many wonderful phone conversations and emails with her over the years. I hope her husband and kids are OK.
-
I'm so sorry bk about Susan. :'(
-
My life is just too surreal.
-
To more time to spend on my life tomorrow.
Good night everyone.
Hugs.
Mega vibes.

Rest In Peace, Susan Gordon.

Just been sitting here thinking about Susan. I've written the notes already - in fact, I wrote them right after I heard. I so wish we'd been able to dine my last trip to NY. She called me a couple of months ago and asked me to send her the latest Hofstetter book, but I was so busy I don't think I did, although I may be wrong about that, as I just looked at the e-mail and think I forwarded it to the helper. I hope so, anyway.
-
Of course, the character of Susan Pomeroy was named after Susan and she was what I had in my head for Susan physically - well, the child version.
