Title: THE WRITING MACHINE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written, and now it is time for you to post until the writing cows come home.

Now, I'm beginning to think some dear readers aren't reading all the posts or the notes, because only about six people have sent their addresses to receive a special haineshisway.com gift.  Now, if that's all that want said gift, fine.  But I won't have any bellyaching when people read about what it is and then suddenly decide to send their addresses.  Send them NOW or forever hold either your peace or your piece.

THE MAN IN THE EIFFEL TOWER:

I recall that my mother took me to see that when I was 8.

The one moment that sticks with me after all these years is....

SPOILER ALERT:

Somebody gets guillotined at the end.

 :o

Unlike movies  today, that bloody moment happened off-screen...but it still left an impression.

 ::)

I was given a copy of the DVD a couple of years ago, but I've never gotten around to watching it.

THE MAN ON THE EIFFEL TOWER

I really like the film. The fact that it's so clumsily made with such odd performances seems to add to its charm. I have the Odeon Entertainment version and the color is pretty good. The final chase up the Eiffel tower is remarkable for its daring - although goodness knows where the villian thought he was going! I love the score by Michel Michelet

I've been busy repairing and putting the garden (yard) fence panel back in place. It doesn't look perfect but at least the place is secure again - at least until the next storm.

Good morning, all! The weather has finally dropped asnd it's beginning to look like Christmas. Much as I am enjoying the cold weather, I wish to go out into it not in the least. That said, I must needs make a trek to Toyland this morning and check on the office. That's my only errand of the day.

When I return, I will continue playing with unlauts and other diacritical marks, and ponder my notes on 102 songs written by Victor Herbert between 1888 and 1924. Life is too tnrilling.

Nice postcard from DR JANE.  Thanks for posting DR GEORGE.

Class was great last night, and we are having another class this morning.....

There was much talk to the newspaper last Sunday, that the candidates are so close, that Indiana's primary in May might actually mean something this year.....but I doubt it.

My question for ASK BK Day:

Is there one classic actor or actress that makes you avoid movies.....even if you like the others in the film.....your antipathy toward said actor/actress keeps you away from any film featuring him/her?

The notes made me think of this question......because while there are a few for me.....past and present......Mr Burgess Meredith is on my list!

Really?  I thought it was a wonderful production.

Well... Late Strauss can be a bit of a long haul for me - especially Capriccio. So... And, alas, to my ears, Ms. Fleming's performances of late have beenconcerned with more of the "beauty of the voce" rather than any true dramatic involvement. And I'm amazed that she no longer sings Mozart, and keeps trying to pass herself off as a coloratura specialist - at least at The Met. Her "Bel Canto" album still gives me some good hearty laughs from time to time. (Here comes a run... lets slow the tempo down a couple of ticks...) *There are some great clips of her on YouTube from earlier in her career, when her technique was more, well, "precise", singing some of the more fiery selections from Bellini and Rossini operas. It's a total night-and-day to how she's been singing the same repertoire the past few seasons. Yes, singers get older, voices changes, and technical adjustments need to be made. However, I think her whole "hype" machine has turned into one of those "she can do no wrong" singers in some people's eyes and ears.

Just my two cents.

As for this production of Capriccio, I think it was beautifully designed, played and sung. However, Ms. Fleming's portrayal was filled with too many moments of looking inward and into the distance which weren't necessarily reflected in her singing.

Why?
I think the thing I have always hated about the movie versions I have seen is that they're much too different from the original book. Read Dennis' book and Mame is young and vital and sexual in the beginning. Roz Russell and Lucille Ball are both ancient, asexual creatures, more like drag queens than real women. Lansbury on Broadway (the first time) was much better; Lansbury the second time was not.

The Swinton from independent movies like "I Am Love" is very different from the Swinton of "Michael Clayton."

Didn't get to do the jog, although I still could, as it's gorgeous out.  But I think I'll just wait until tomorrow.  I finessed yesterday's twenty pages - made a few additions and smoothed out a lot of stuff.  Then I went on and wrote three new pages.  Then I had to pick up a Blu and Ray, then I had a bad pastrami sandwich at a hole in the wall deli (Marv's) that I hadn't been to in almost thirty-two years, then I picked up no packages, then came back home and began writing again.  I've done ten pages so far and will do at least five to ten more before the end of the evening.  But I'm taking a little break right now.

Because I had not been out of the house since we got home from Lima on Sunday, I went out today to do some errands.  Went to 2 branches of the library system from which I retired, the blood lab to make sure my order was there for a fasting test (it is), and to the grocery store.  Kroger was a zoo, which makes me wonder if we have a snowstorm on the way...
For your sake, I hope not. My one winter in Middletown was soooo cold. Brutal.

Yes, mentioned twice in posts and once in the notes.  And yes, you must send the addresses to the kritzerland e-mail address - a couple of folks have sent them here but that does me no good.  Please send again to the kritzerland at gmail dot com address.

What's weird is that i remember reading that line about you eating Matzo Brei. But not the rest.  I guess i don't finish reading all sentences?

I survived, not one, but two MRI's today.  The secret is to keep your eyes closed from the moment they start to slide you into the tube until after they pull you out.  I kept my eyes closed and visualized myself on a beautiful sandy beach in Grand Cayman.  Piece of cake!

I am playing my first Words With Friends game on the Book of Face with my niece and I do have to say that I am whooping her butt (though I think a lot of has to do with having some incredible luck with the letters I've been doled.)

Not sure how I feel about WWF.  It's a complete rip-off of Scrabble.  I know there was some controversy about the whole thing a few years ago when it first began.  But I'm kind of shocked that the owners of Scrabble didn't sue the pants off WWF's parent company.

I'm also if this version of the game has been reconfigured to be easier--there seems to be more vowels and the placement of the triple word spaces seem to be easier to access, but perhaps I'm misremembering the actual Scrabble board.

But in any case, I'm currently more than 100 points ahead of my niece.

...And...

Sometimes all you need to do is leave the computer and the modem OFF for more than three minutes in order to fully reset the connection.

::)

Noted.

It really was quite a frustrating - and in the end "funny" - situation. We didn't really change anything major in her computer's configuration except for to add a wireless connection for her modem. We weren't even setting up a WiFi network. It was truly a "plug and play" situation. Thankfully, my brother suggested just to shut everything down for a bit, and then boot everything back up to see if that would fix things... And it did! Apparently, her modem was still "remembering" the previous set up, so it would end up "conflicting" with itself.

My brother even mentioned that he's heard of service calls from his office that go on for hours(!) with people on both ends running diagnostic after diagnostic, and trying fix after fix... When all that was needed was to shut everything down for about 10 minutes.

And since my mother's brother and his wife and one of their daughters will be arriving in Richmond tomorrow night...

And since I have to make sure this bedroom is ready for them to sleep in tomorrow night...

Well...
