Well, you've read the notes, the notes were never draggin', and now it is time for you to post until the draggin' cows come home.

Good morning, all! I awoke early with a long repeating dream about the score for ROBERTA and the stage band charts. I've checked my email and I will shortly go back to bed, where I hope to stay most of the day, reading and watching tv.

I have to make an emergency run to Staples after noon and enlarge on a photocopier an 8x11 score for DEAREST ENEMY to 11x17.  And that's my day.

BK, I would swear that somewhere on this computer I have a message from Martin Brass. I'm still looking for it.

BK, I found Martin on LinkedIn.com! He's written this:

Big House (1992-1997) was recording studio from the days or old. Situated in New York's Times Square, the studio boasted a custom Neve 8078 recording console (Konk Studios has the sister console), Studer multitracks, Ampex tape machines, a collection of vintage microphones, API pre-amps, and outboard. The studio also had a fantastic collection of rare and vintage guitars, amps and other instruments (including Greg Alman's C-3).

My wife and I saw THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO last Monday on Sandy's birthday.

It was a good film,  We enjoyed it, but also agree that it was an unnecessary remake.  Except for the fact that you had to read subtitles, the Swedish version was better.

The thing that bothered us most was that the last 15 minutes (after the killer is dispatched) is very anti-climatic.  It works fine in a book, but not in a well-structured movie.

On the Swedish verison's dvd there was the option not to read subtitles (or at least there was on my version which was french/Swedish). It was dubbed in French, which is what i chose. Because trying to read French subtitles while listening to Swedish was not good for me.

Odd dreams, as if I were still back in law school, only with the lower energy of a 50-something rather than the higher energy of a teen or 20-something.  I wonder if remembering my law school drama group escapades last night caused these dreams.

Jrand, please don't interpret, or at least don't interpret unless you can give a substantial discount on the Dream-o-matic reading.

Oh my, I am so close to 18,000 - does 18,000 (1000 times "chai" or "life" in Jewish numerology) count as a milestone these days?

Anything ending with lots of zeros counts as millstones, FJL.

Most theorists do make it up. Sometimes it's based on fact, but as I dig deeper into this horrible degree program, the more I'm convinced that they love the people who make it up.

Clum, who wrote "Something for the Boys," has a factual error on almost every single page, but it's what the doctorate ordered.

Just picked up a huge amount of grass-fed beef that is now happily stored in my freezers. I went in with friends on a cow. Have to decide what to make first: sirloin, T-bones, ox-tails. I left the brisket and was glad I did. Between the two freezers, I had just enough room for what I picked up. I even got some soup bones in the mix.

When I was growing up, we would go in with another family on a cow that the other family raised. That family was more into the ground beef than my mom was, so we always ended up with plenty of steak. It got to the point that I once complained to another someone at church that I was tired of steak.

Ah, those were the days.

I am curious in the US version did they show anything about Erika and Mikael's relationship? I remember they left that out of the Swedish version and that really bothered me. Because in the books something that happens with them at the end of the first book is what starts everything that happens in the 2nd book. So to me that was a big thing to be left out.

It's in the US version and is part of what DR DRUXY described as anti-climactic.  It's part if the reason I liked this version.  I think in some ways it's closer to the book

I think I also liked seeing the extended ending in the Hollywood movie if only because it drove home to me further why the book in Sweden is called something that translates into "Men Who Hate Women" and it sets up why she won't speak to him in the second part of the tale.

I'm back from "Lyrics and Lyricists." It was really wonderful.  Howard McGillin, Laura Osnes, Christine Andreas and BK's good friend Jason Graae performed the songs of Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn.  Some of the songs are: Ain't We Got Fun, How Ya Gonna Keep Em Down on the Farm, Pretty Baby, My Buddy, It Had to Be You, Toot, Toot Tootsie, Carolina in the Morning, My Blue Heaven, Dream a Little Dream of Me, San Francisco, Makin' Whoopee, Love Me or Leave Me, I'll See You in My Dreams.

Christine was just great singing "It Had to Be You" and "Love me or Leave Me." Loved Howard's "My Buddy."  Laura did a nice job on "Dream a Little Dream."  And what can I say about Jason?  He's got a great voice, of course ("Yes, Sir, That's My Baby; How Ya Gonna Keep Em...) but he's so funny and creative while he's performing!

After the show I spoke briefly with Christine and Howard (both very gracious).  And I introduced myself to Jason , who told me I looked familiar.  I told him I was an HHW member and how much I enjoyed his "outside the box" video.  He gave the credit to Bruce and said it was a lot of fun.

We took a couple of photos (which I'd like to post , but which I may need help with tomorrow).

I asked Jason if he had a message for BK--here it is:

"he owes me money" and  "he left his underwear at my house"

Sounds like fun.

I read the notes re: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and was wondering for those who have read the books what is left out?

And what things are different than what was left out of the Swedish version?

(Probably don't read this if you are unfamiliar with the books/movies - don't want to spoil anything for anyone).

.
.
.

Novels are novels and movies are movies.

Structurally, they are two entirely different animals.

When a movie tries to mirror a novel, it runs into problems, as this one did during the last fifteen minutes.

I won't go into specifics, because I don't want to be a Spoiler.

I also enjoyed THE HELP, but that is another movie that followed the novel too closely.

And before today's closing matinee, I managed to make it back over to Stella's for brunch. When I walked in, the place was packed. I was hoping to grab a place at the bar, but there were no free seats. However, I spied an empty place at the communal table, and went ahead and sat down for a nice brunch.

Today's selections: a frappé (Greek iced coffee), Tsoureki Vyssinos (French Toast made with Greek Easter Bread, topped with sour cherries, almonds, pistachios and whipped Greek Yogurt), and a side of Loukaniko (housemade sausage with fennel and orange zest).

Opa!

On the way out of Stella's, I saw Stella's daughter, Katrina, and Katrina's husband, Johnny. -They basically run an "empire" of restaurants here in Richmond. I also talked briefly with Katrina and Johnny's son, Dean. I remember when Dean was born - 22 years ago! He's actually up in NYC right now in his last year at Parsons. -In fact, he designed all of the graphics and website for the new restaurant: Stella's Richmond (http://stellasrichmond.com/).

does anyone else here have a favorite chili recipe they would care to share?

1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, chopped (optional)
1 tsp. salt
1-2 tsp. chili powder
1 bay leaf, broken in half
1 tsp. Worchestershire sauce
2 8-oz cans tomato sauce
2 16-oz cans Brooks chili beans (mild or hot, your choice)

Brown meat & drain.  Combine all other ingredients & simmer 2-3 hours.  Remove bay leaf before serving.

DR Vixmom - this is my go-to recipe.  I cook it in my crockpot on low for 4-6 hours.  The recipe doubles well and a double recipe just fills my crockpot.

Most of the chili's I've made have been "dump" affairs.

I usually...

Dump some meat into a Dutch oven (or heavy-bottomed pot) - ground beef, ground turkey, ground chicken, cubed beef, cubed chicken, etc. Add a tablespoon or so of oil to help with the browning.

Then dump in some onions and garlic that you have chopped up.

Then add some cumin, chili powder, oregano, salt and pepper. -And cayenne, red chili flakes, chopped fresh jalapenos, etc., if so desired.

Stir and cook that all up until the onions soften.

Then add a big can of diced tomatoes. -Yes, tomatoes. Add some water if it looks like it needs it.

Then add a can or two of beans: kidney, black beans, pinto beans, etc. -Yes, beans.

Then let it simmer until it starts to thicken up a bit.

*And, a secret I learned from a chili cook-off champ: always add a little bit more cumin and chili powder towards the end. The "fresh" spices add another layer of flavor.

**Also remember that chili always tastes better the next day. Make a batch, eat some of it if you wish, then refrigerate the rest. Reheat it gently when it comes to serve it.

Gourmet magazine had a great recipe for a White Bean Chili which I also "use" from time to time. It works best with ground pork or chicken. Basically, chop some onions, brown them. Then add the ground meat. Season with a generous amount of cumin. Then add a can of diced green chiles, and a can of white beans. Let that simmer for at least 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Vixmom, Betsy is making a delicious chili this week, but I'm afraid JohnG would probably disapprove, as it won't have meat and will have beans.  I never knew that Texas chili didn't have beans until I watched that episode of Top Chef:  Texas.
I still haven't seen that episode, even though I was there.

And yes, you are correct, no beans, no corn, no tofu, no faux-fu (for the tofu intolerant), no potatoes and for some, no tomatoes, either.

bk may have answered this before, but just in case...

DR TCB - I believe the reason bk moved the Kritzerland evenings to Sunday nights was to make it a bit more "family friendly", at the very least, more "worker" friendly. His time slot at The Gardenia was always at 9:00pm on Wednesday evenings. At Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's, he's able to have an earlier time slot, 7:00pm. Since the shows usually just run an hour, everyone is able to head home shortly after 8:00pm instead of 10:00pm.

I had a very, very unpleasant incident on Thursday, followed by some unexpected and very bad news on Friday. I am still reeling from it. Some of this is fall-out from a very poor economy. I am trying to cope.

I read the notes re: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and was wondering for those who have read the books what is left out?

And what things are different than what was left out of the Swedish version?

(Probably don't read this if you are unfamiliar with the books/movies - don't want to spoil anything for anyone).

.
.

But, the thing of it is, this same bit of business IS in the extended Swedish version - it wasn't in the theatrical release, though, but it's definitely in the extended version.  And frankly I thought the whole relationship was much more prevalent in the Swedish version.

Back from a really wonderful first show at Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's.  It really could not have gone better.  The patter got lots of laughs and I had a running gag throughout where I kept misstating the name of the club and our show.  It worked every time.  The singers were great, and it was so wonderful to have Michelle Nicastro's daughter, Callie (Cady, the younger daughter, wasn't up to coming), her husband, and her sister.  We had about forty-five people - at the Gardenia that would pretty much fill the room - at this new space not quite, although they're really good about setting up the room so it looks full no matter how many people they have.
