Title: THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD

Well, you've read the notes, the notes, like the pen, were mightier than the fersluganah sword, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - the cows are also mightier than the sword.

It'll take awhile to get through all of the CD's to figure out which ones I like best.  I've gottne used to listening to them on compilations with my favorite songs from various CD's.

Subject to change without notice:
The Sondheim CD (wasn't that the first Fynsworth CD?) has to be on the list
Broadway Christmas
You're Never Fully Dressed
Unsung Musicals (parts of all of them)
Lost in Boston (parts of all of them)

TOD

Since my desert island has several grouped together:

Island 1:
Liz Callaway (Frank Loesser)
Collete Collage
Jason Graae (Live at the Cinegrill)
No Way To Treat a Lady
Skinner & Ripley (Duets)

Callaway: Love the choices of material, the orchestrations and arrangements especially My Heart Is So Full Of You & Joey Joey
Collete Collage: I enjoy listening to the show and its bears multiple listenings. Great singers Judy Kaye, Jason Graae Judy Blazer etc
Jason Graae: Love listening to him and enjoy this live recording.
No Way To Treat a Lady: Another show I have listen to multiple times. It's fun to listen to and like to imagine Rod Steiger, George Segal, Eileen Heckart and Lee Remick singing the score.
Skinner & Ripley: Together or apart these ladies are great. I love the material chosen for this album.

2nd Island
Unsung Irving Berlin
Lucky Stiff
A Broadway Love Story (Christianne Noll)
Michelle Nicastro (On My Own)
Laurie Beechman (Songs of Hope...)

Berlin: It's enjoyable to listen to songs by Berlin that are not well known and there are 2 cds worth of them.
Broadway love: A concept album that works. The songs are well chosen and flow perfectly to tell a story and works if it's a man or a gay version
Nicastro: Hard to choose here as there were four to choose from. But this one is more "adult" than the "kiddie" cds
Beechman: This one resonates more for me than the Lloyd Webber album. Beechman knew she was ill and would like to think that this was her "f**k you" to her illness and it wasn't going to beat her.

3rd Island
The Gay 90's
Petula Clark
Drat! The Cat
Linda Purl (Alone Together)
Mary Cleere Haran (This Funny World)

Gay 90's: A fun collection of songs. I still chuckle at the funny ones and get chills at the more dramatic ones like My Superman
Petula Clark: I always enjoyed listening to her, but really had no albums by her except for this one. I have the release with the bonus Sunset Blvd tracks that BK did not produce. I enjoyed the Broadway songs that she sung.
Drat! Another fun show to listen to. They really need to revive this somewhere. Susan Egan & Jason Graae are great and so are the contributions from Judy Kaye, Elaine Stritch and Jonathan Freeman.
Linda Purl: Who new she could sing? This jazz influenced cd is one of the best and I have listened to it many times when I need to mellow out
Mary Cleere Haran: Another great singer who left us too soon. I had the pleasure of seeing her a couple of times live. Love her song styling.

4th Island
Debbie Gravitte (The Alan Menken Album aka Part Of Your World: Debbie Gravitte Sings Alan Menken)
Brent Barrett (Kander & Ebb)
Helen Reddy
Copenhagen
Beyond Therapy

Gravitte: Of her two recordings I liked the material better on this one, but both are well sung and enjoyable to listen to
Barrett: My actual preference is for the Alan Jay Lerner cd (Especially for She Wasn't You & the duet with Lauren Bacall) but BK did not have the chance to complete it. But I love Barrett's voice so Kander and Ebb it is.
Reddy: Another singer I enjoyed over the years but the only recording I had of her's was from Pete's Dragon.
Copehagen & Beyond Therapy: Two plays recorded for CD. A lost art really. Very few plays (if any) are recorded these days. These two vastly different in tone and style make great listening. Interesting to listen to what made one play succeed and the other one didn't.

JR, here's a dream that might stump the Dream-o-Matic 3000, or even the Dream-o-Matic 4000:

I had a very convoluted, disturbing dream this morning where my Mom was still alive and we were getting together with her to tell her my sisters and I had all been receiving ghostly visitations from our deceased Dad.  That was a very difficult thing and my Mom just kept insisting she thought my Dad was still alive.  This took place at my parents' home in SLC, which was completely empty of furniture.  Then I had to get somewhere (Portland, I'm assuming), except I was walking, and I also needed to make arrangements with a housesitter (somehow this morphed to me getting from one place in Portland to another place in Portland), who had neither a phone nor email.  I tried to drop by her office to give her quick instructions on how to get to a car dealership down the street where she was going to need to help set something up for some kind of street fair, but I didn't have time to completely make her understand.  Then, I headed off, walking, to do a whole slew of errands, but was unsure which order to get them done in, on top of which, I missed catching a bus that drove by.

Then the alarm went off.  :)

Great list, Michael S

I have a soft spot for quite a few others, including "You'll Never Know," just because it's Cole Porter, and very well sung Cole Porter at that. And I love Rebecca Luker's Cole Porter album, Judy Kuhn's Jule Styne album, Judy Kaye, Sally Mayes ... the list goes on.

Hoping the Madonna-Elton John "feud" over the Golden Globes Best Song award is just a phony publicity stunt, since it just seems so silly, but the public battle is featured in our thumbs-down spot in this year's Golden Globes "Hollywood Gown" rundown,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9tZwsJKa6M

("Hollywood Gown" - the song parodies the legendary Manfred Mann recording of Harriet Schock's "Hollywood Town")

- also featuring a glimpse (in a good way, of course) of one of the most exciting people I had the privilege of meeting in 2011 (and helping a little on her and dear friend Harriet Schock's  new show's reading at the Actors Studio in June) the amazing Diane Ladd, who is as effervescent and delightful in person as she always seems when she's herself on camera

I felt so bad last night. I went to pick up my nieces from school/daycare. I gave them dinner. They had their own dinner. But they liked what i'd brought for myself more (spaghetti). So i let them have that for their dinner (since i had extra).

It was leftovers. And it had meat sauce. But often my meat sauce gets too meaty if i leave it in the fridge. So i added so more sauce (from a can). Anyhow i just grabbed a can and didn't look at the details.

My 6 year old niece eats a plate of spaghetti then says on her 2nd plate "this seems a little spicy" (i hadn't eaten yet). And i look at the can and it says "spicy red peppers".

No wonder the 2 year old wouldn't eat the sauce. :)

It wasn't that spicy. But still it was too spicy for kids. Luckily there was not that much of the extra sauce in it. But boy did i feel bad!

DR JMK - Dream-O-Matic 6000 tells us that you feel as if you were the communication link between your parents and your sisters.  We also find that you are still seeking your own space in your own home.  You also have a feeling that no matter how much you think about your decisions before you make them - in the end, the other direction would have been better.

That you are crazy is unarguable, but that is not necessarily reflected in your dreams.  Those who are clinically diagnosed as "insane" or "troubled" usually have the most logical and calmest of dreams.

Good morning, all! I've spent two hours this morning downloading a lot of sound files and organizing my iTunes. I slept rather well, although the DEAREST ENEMY situation remains a mess. I've alerted the Man from Philadelphia that there could be anunexpected glitch. In cas the work needs to be reassigned, I've got one of my team alerted and ready to go on it.

Today, I am home while my super redoes the grouting around my bath before the tiles fall off. While he grouts, I will continue to proofread DEAREST ENEMY.

We had a very nice dinner with Amy last night. We went to the official Chelsea/Village branch of the HHW Meeting Place, The Good Stuff Diner. I had White Bean Soup with Escarole and a Chicken Salad Sandwich on Rye Toast. Amy had Crab Cakes and a Chocolate Egg Cream and Anthony had a California Wrap. We sat and talked for two hours then she went on to begin her marathon of editing the latest documentary in which she's involved.

Amy sends her love to all who remember her and apologizes for her lack of posting. Things are crazy in her life right now (I know that's not a good excuse for some) but she does think of us and remember us and will get here when she can.

Oh, gosh. Barrymore's, one of my favorite restaurants in New York. Now it's just a parking lot. It's hard to believe the owner makes more money with an empty lot than a thriving restaurant. But, that's why I'm not a businessman.

TPunk (Antonia), Jason and Rodzinski (Tom) are there also with me and Ginny and Richard and and Jose and Larry (well hidden in the back next to Jason).

So is Rodgers and Hammerstein. So is ALW. I don't think that means every Chicago theater needs to stage "Seesaw," but what shows/writers would you like to see staged more often?

The only Kander and Ebb we get here in San Antonio is the umpteenth staging of "Chicago," which, admittedly sold out every performance over Christmas at a theater that often has trouble filling half of its seats.

We got "Once on This Island," but not "Lucky Stiff," "The Glorious Ones," "Dessa Rose" or "A Man of No Importance" from Flaherty and Ahrens.

We get "Dolly" and "Mame" every third year, but not "The Grand Tour" or "Mack and Mabel."

Bruce:  The discography sounds like a "must" to me, but I would be remiss if I didn't suggest to you that you also include recording sessions for albums that did not get finished by you.  Indicate what the concept was and how far you got in each album.  Folks should know what to credit and what to discredit on those albums that were released without your supervision.

So...

Where do we stand on a possible HHW meet-up this Saturday?

Just in case, probably best to message me here with a Yay or Nay, and restaurant suggestions. I was thinking Landarc in the Time-Warner Center at Columbus Circle.

Great picture DR BEN!!!

DR ELMORE that's an interesting link.....but his choices leave something to be ....  well....desired.

I only agree with him in his decision that Sondheim is vastly overdone!

Ditto!

There was a time when Sondheim's shows were considered the alternative/indie rock of B'way.  Nowadays, he is St. Stephen and not two seasons can go by without a revival.

I'm up.  I was just staying in bed because I thought it was early, but it wasn't.  Muse Margaret called - it was indeed the number of pages that took so long to read.  She gave them a thumb's up but asked me to look at several things, which I will - simple stuff, detail stuff.  But she also asked me to look at the whole Carol Channing section and that's why I need muse Margaret - she understands it all but feels I'm on slightly dangerous territory because Carol is so beloved and such a legend.  So, I'll go through that section and maybe tone it down a bit - it's not terrible or anything, but she feels I come off a little angrier than I probably meant to - it was annoying, but I was never angry, so I probably just wrote it poorly - I'll make whatever adjustments and then read it to her.  And I say a Jerry Herman quote (and it's real and he said it) but she doesn't feel I should include it because Jerry is alive and Carol would probably be upset if she knew he'd said it.  I agree.

"Most" people are not exposed to good theater, much less exceptional theater.  Whether you think the current "Follies" is exceptional, good or an abomination means nothing to folks who've never seen it or heard it.

They are swept away.  Their souls are enriched.  It's an emotional powerhouse to be subjected to talent at levels so high in a live experience.

When Barbara Cook did her one-woman "Simply Sondheim" at San Francisco's Curran Theater, I had tears welling up during nearly every song...so perfect was the performance, the experience and my joy.

The vast majority of theatergoers are not jaded by constant exposure to phenomenal talent. It's unique as an experience to them.  A large number of them have probably marvelled at the "talents" on each season of "American Idol."  They may even have been moved to take in a performance because they watch "Glee" on a weekly basis.  Imagine if they could have such an experience as "Follies" every week.

I really don't like the inclusion of the dialogue on the newest OCR. It all seems to interrupt the flow of the songs. And on a cast album, I want to hear the songs.

Young Frankenstein better be good tonight.  I've been breathing in diesel exhaust from the trucks unloading all day.   It only happens when they park 2 semis in the alley and the weather is just right....or just wrong.  I had a headache and left the office.  When I came back I figured it out  (i'm right on the fire escape and the trucks park right below me).  It's only happened twice, but man does it make me feel sick.   I opened the windows even though it's freezing out. That helped.

Very clever (or should that by cleaver).

I finessed, then wrote a few new pages, then rewrote the Channing section (not really rewriting, just some deletions and rephrasing a couple of sentences - that's all it really took), then I ate, then picked up one tiny package, then came home, wrote ten more pages, read the rewrites to muse Margaret who loved them and said it made everything better, then wrote another page or two.  I'm just taking a little break, then I'll continue writing until six.

Sounds like the edible equivalent of "Follies." Ghosts of meals past wafting through the parking lot.

I've been having a fun correspondence with Teller's partner (not Penn - his life partner).  He wrote me on Facebook to tell me that Teller had given him the CD and Blu of Nudie Musical and wrote to tell me how much they both loved the movie.  He's also gotten There's Mel and loves, that, too.  He wrote me today that they'd both just watched all six episodes of Outside the Box and laughed their asses off.  So nice to hear.  I told him that if I could figure out how to do one of these for Teller that I would.  Wouldn't that be fun?

Mime, the musical?

I just received a text from a friend in So. California who heard we are going to have a blizzard & will we be ok.  I haven't heard about any blizzard-2 inches of rain & some wind maybe.

I hope she doesn't know something we don't know.  Either way it looks like I won't be driving my car on the road & will miss my hiking group outing.  I wish one of the hikers lived near me & could pick me up at the bottom of our road where the main road is fine.

As for The Gershins' Porgy & Bess...

Well...

I'm really not sure just how I feel about what I saw on stage at the Richard Rodgers earlier tonight.

Part of me is majorly conflicted.

And another part of me is actually offended.

A few of the "highlights" for me:
-A brand new Overture. -Not a Prologue, but an old-fashioned Broadway Overture. -Didn't Diane Paulus want to make this production more realistic?
-"Summertime" is now a duet. -That's when I started not to care - and that was only five minutes into the show.
-There's now a dance break in the middle of "It Ain't Necessarily So".
-The music that underscores the big dramatic - and originally traumatic and tragic - moment of the second act has been jerry-rigged to make it more of a happy, triumphant one. -Prompting the audience to cheer in approval.
-There's way too much accordion in the orchestration.

However...

I will say that Audra McDonald more than likely locked up her next Tony as soon as she opened her mouth to start singing "I Loves You Porgy".

"If you got plenty of nothin', be sure to stop by here to get somethin'."

I don't know if I mentioned it here, but the trucks that unloaded Young Frankenstein parked right under my office.  When the conditions are just wrong (as they were today) and there are 2 semis in the alley the exhaust comes right in my office.  So today I breathed in diesel all day.  I had a  headache and had to open the windows many times.   After seeing the show tonight, I'm not longer mad about it.   I really enjoyed it.  We get the one night tours with the young "happy to be on his/her first national tour" actors. Sometimes they aren't so good, but tongiht they were all good and some were excellent.   It was great fun and it was fun to see such a different crowd, lots more young people and lots of young men.

Now I shall go home and find some dinner.  Then off to the theater.  I have never seen Young Frankenstein, the musical, so I'm really looking forward to it.

I saw the pre-Broadway production in Seattle, and the tour, which I would assume is the same tour that you're seeing, is coming to Olympia next month. :)

They closed our building today at 4:00.  I stayed today for a couple of hours because I HAD to finish the end-of-fiscal-year roll-over...but I couldn't actually finish it.  The last report that I have to run requires an administrative password that I don't have. :P

A lot of people at work today were wondering if they (the admin) would close the libraries throughout the district, but nothing was said before most people left, so we have to check in or try to get to work to find out.  I won't have much trouble getting to work, so I'm not too concerned, but if they close the Service Center, I'll have to call my staff (MY staff) and let them know that they won't have to come in...if they're not already there.
