We watched MY WEEK WITH MARILYN last night and really enjoyed it.

Michelle Williams was superb as Monroe.  Indeed, most of the time I was watching the real Marilyn.

And, who else but Kenneth Branagh  could have don Olivier.

On the other hand, though he's a fine actor, I think that Toby Jones was a poor choice for Arthur Jacobs.  I knew Arthur and Jones was nothing like him.

and before the internet/magazine that tell you what's going to happen on the soaps I enjoyed watching when Is able to see them
Days of Our Lives, Another World, Search For Tomorrow, Edge of Night and in reruns way after the original run Dark Shadows which was really a cheesy affair.

Talk shows like the ones I mentioned above are  a thing of the past. I can't abhide watching what passes themselves as talk shows today. Don't have time to rant and rave right now. I have to go off to work.

Good morning, all! I slept about ten hours last night and I feel wide awake. I have a day out and about: Toyland and City Center. I've got a few things to scan and send to the DEAREST ENEMY workers, and Joshie needs library help getting things read for Monday's orchestra reading of PIPE DREAM.

TOD: I watched most of the shows that Michael S. mentioned, including the days on "Search for Tomorrow" when Andrea McArdle and Morgan Fairchild were step-sisters. Wouldn't miss an episode of "Dark Shadows."

I loved Mike Douglas, too. I remember seeing the cast of "Bubbling Brown Sugar" one day and Chita and Gwen Verdon from "Chicago" on another. He never seemed to be in a hurry, and would get good, substantial responses from people. I think Charlie Rose is the only one to follow in that tradition.

TOD:

I fondly recall early morning TV of my very early youth when CBS showed reruns of Dick Van Dyke, The Lucy Show and The Beverly Hillbillies.  And over on NBC there was Concentration and then The Match Game.

I remember rushing home from school to catch Dark Shadows (and then General Hospital once I got caught up on that.) After those soaps we would watch The Movie Game, Mike Stokey's Stump The Stars and The Steve Allen Show.

My older sister could not stand Mike Douglas so we rarely watched--only when he had guests or co-hosts such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Other shows I enjoyed:
Split Second
Match Game '73
All My Children

I can't stand daytime TV today.  Staying home sick and laying on the sofa watching tv usually makes me feel worse.

One of my neighbours is having their house renovated and workmen have been spending the morning throwing out rubbish and unwanted household items into a skip which was delivered this morning. When they'd gone for lunch some guy, who looked about 30, came cycling up to the skip and started rummaging through it. He took out two old computer monitors and other electrical items and, over the next hour, started taking them to bits and putting various components into his bag. He had plenty of tools with him so was fully equiped in advance for the job; pliers, hammer, screwdrivers etc. Having gathered everything he wanted he cycled off - with difficulty because the bag seemed very heavy.

Baffles me how scavengers like this suddenly appear out of nowhere. I can only assume he constantly cycles around in the hope of finding stuff in skips.

In my youth - I enjoyed DARK SHADOWS and THE MATCH GAME (the original one with one star and two civilians on each team)....and THE PRICE IS RIGHT, of course.

The only soap opera I watched in addition to DARK SHADOWS was THE EDGE OF NIGHT which was sort of a police-mystery type of program that was very good.....and Joel Crothers from DS ended up there for its last year or so.

Today I do like to watch JUDGE JUDY and JERRY SPRINGER.

I will have to miss JUDGE JUDY today in order to watch ANDERSON COOPER - but I am sure it will be worth it.

Thanks again to all for the vibes for my brother in law - he starts his chemotherapy today, so we shall see what happens.

The syndicated MERV GRIFFIN SHOW used to be on in the afternoon when I got home from school, and I remember watching that quite a bit.  When I was younger, in Seattle (the first market I lived in that had more than just the three broadcast networks), there were a lot of fun syndicated shows on in the afternoon, including THE MOVIE GAME with Larry Blyden.  I can still recite some of the banter from that show.

I am sooooo tired.  The plane was delayed twice.  I didn't get into tampa until around midnight.  Got the Super Shuttle and was third person off so didn't walk in the door until after one.  The dogs were so excited to see me and I had to spend some time with treats and pets and lots of say I missed you/love you.  I went in the back yard with them for a moment to let them run it off and I didn't get to bed until sometime around two thirty.  Woke up at eight thirty to watch the show.  I'm pumped right now but have a feeling I'm going to crash soon.

Thelma wanted to go out to dinner but i asked her if we going do it on Saturday so I can feel up to it.

First of all, you look fabulous - love your hair
Secondly, I knew your story, but hearing it again, really made me tear up
Thirdly, No one deserves the surprise on the show more than you
Fourthly, You hugged Anderson....I'm jealous :)
Fifthly,  How cool that you also have the real Angie of Angie's list in your corner.

Ditto, Ditto, Ditto, Ditto, and (most of all) Ditto!!!

In ENCHANTED, Susan Sarandon's character describes NYC as a "place where there are no happy endings" and this segment flies right in the face of that statement.  I am so thrilled for our dear DR Danise and Anderson Cooper has a brand new fan here in SW Ohio.

Flashback to the Oscars and the incomplete (and highly edited) "In Memoriam" segment.

Every year, Oscar pays final respects to departed actors/actresses/technicians, etc., and EVERY year they leave someone out.   Granted, some folks may seem "minor" to those decision-makers hard-pressed to schedule an event that should last one hour into a three-hour slot, but their failures do not go unnoticed.  Click below to see who was....

Danise, vis a vis crying (and this is only partially a joke):  remember you'll have to pay taxes on all of these gifts.  Set a little bit aside for that.

I was wondering if they told you about the taxes.  If you have someone do your taxes for you, I'd talk to them to see what you should set aside for next year. Maybe you have enough withheld that it will even out, but it's worth checking on while you have money in hand.

It's probably best to pay them as soon as possible...just to keep ahead of the game.

So, Andrew Breitbart's father-in-law was Orson Bean, who's talking to the press about Andrew's death. And all I keep hearing is him singing, "I can't wait to see you with your clothes on" from "Subways Are for Sleeping."

Warning for all DRs watching DR Danise's segment. Get your tissues ready! At the bottom of the clip it says that they gave a washer/dryer and $10K. Back from a fun breakfast with Alet.  They're shooting a commercial nearby so they got a permit and have parking on the south side of my street all reserved for themselves for a two and a half block radius.  The problem, always, is that they abuse this.  When I came back from breakfast every parking space on my side of the street, including in front of my house was taken.  There was a security guard who'd just parked his car in the last space in front of my house.  I waved him over and told him that they had a specific permit and that that permit was for the other side of the street.  This idiot shot me some attitude and told me to call the city, that it was public parking.  I parked my car down the street and came back and told him I wanted his name and badge number.  He then got contrite when I told him he was not the "public" in "public" parking.  He apologized and said he didn't realize I lived here.  Then he said, "I'll call my location manager and have him talk to you - I guess you want money."  I said, "No, I don't want money I want you to park on the side of the street you have the permit for."  He moved his vehicle and I parked, but I knew it was going to make our rehearsal this afternoon difficult.

The location manager came and apologized - he said he didn't know if all those cars belonged to his people, but I told him that non one EVER parks on this street - EVER.  So, he assured me he'd have the cars moved (they not only have their permit to park on the south side of the street, they also have a parking lot two blocks away).  So far he's been true to his word and at least two cars have moved.

The law used to be that an individual could receive a gift up to $10,000.00 from one source in one calendar year.  We had to used that after my mother was killed.  I had to have my brother-in-law gift me ten grand until we got all of the lawsuits finished.

I love THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL: the plots make no sense even when they're not verging on the assinine and ridiculous, no one can act, and the actors are completely lost because their characters have no sense of reality. After catching 30 minutes of its dreck, I feel so superior.

There must be a whole lot of pretty on it to keep you watching it each day!

Nothing of the sort.  Have you seen the options for afternoon tv?

Just saw DR DANISE on the show.  It was wonderful.  You did great DR DANISE....and you looked great.  That's a beautiful set, too!  And of course there is Mr Anderson himself.

Thanks to DR TCB and DR MBARNUM......I have yet to hear how today went.

DR JRand61, I believe they're taping in the Jazz at LincolnCenter Space which is a great cabaret venue. The window looks out on Broadway. I saw Rebecca Luker sing there last year.

Oh great!  Anderson's Show starring Danise is scheduled for two o'clock, but they are broadcasting the memorial service for our state trooper that was killed last week.
It's on line as well so you will see the gist of it.

I guess I will have to settle for the clip online, since this memorial service is going to be on for a long time.  We haven't even gotten to the Governor yet.

I'm finally listening to the new recording of Follies.  Not my style, I have to say, but this seems to be what people want these days - small, tiny-sounding dry as dirt recording ambience.  It's like a radio drama - I miss Goddard Lieberson.  The trick with cast albums is to get the cast to replicate their performances and make it work for the ear.  What you don't want is for them to suddenly act like they're doing a tiny little intimate film because it sucks the theatricality out of everything.  This is THEATRE, not radio.

  LEFT OUT   (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJecRhKOv8g&feature=youtu.be)

A few of the omissions are shocking to me.

Very shocking!!!!

Perhaps the Academy has something against drug addicts.  This year they left out Jeff Conaway and last year Corey Haim.

I have to agree about the drug thing.  Many people in the entertainment and religious communities tend to ignore deaths that are drug related, or booze or whatever.  Maybe they would go away.  Although they included Whitney....

Well, folks, my mother has all but admitted that she's no longer to go to the grocery on the retirement community bus, so Richard and I are off to take her shopping this afternoon.  Bye for now!

Has she been banned from the bus??

Oh, dear, I should have said she's no longer able to go on the bus.  Last time she did, the nice driver had to catch her twice to keep her from falling.  Plus, she doesn't see well and doesn't process info very fast and has trouble accomplishing much in the limited time they have.  Today, I pushed her in a wheelchair and Richard pushed a shopping cart and she did $170 worth of shopping.  Looks like we'll do that at least once a month from now on.

They're available, DR TCB, but she's opted out and prefers to fend for herself.  In her words, "If I had to eat downstairs all the time, I'd GAG."  She can purchase dinner tickets and does eat with her friends from time to time and she told me today that she's considering getting Meals On Wheels a couple of days a week.

A Cautionary Tale for Actors Department:  I was rather surprised yesterday whilst watching Judge Judy to see a Rosacea commercial (for a cure, not the disease, LOL) which suddenly had the face of a good friend of ours, a former news anchor here who worked with Betsy (and who has been in several episodes of PORTLANDIA), emblazoned across the screen, covered in ugly red rashes (which I know she doesn't have).   Betsy PMd her on Facebook and it turns out she had done some sort of shoot last year for a stock footage company that in turn sold the footage to the commerical house, which froze a frame of this lady's face and digitally added the Rosacea.  All that, and no residuals.  ;)

Yes hopefully now that you have a bit less stress you will be able to stick around.  I did watch the whole ANDERSON show.  It was very emotional. I felt so bad for the woman who had her baby stolen from her. I almost lost it when she said her other son would sleep in the closet cause he was afraid he would be taken too. I am glad that she at least gets to see her child now. I hope she gets full custody of the baby and that the court does something to the baby's father.  Loved seeing the rest of DR Danise. Excellent show.

Danise, I can see you walking thru the airport dragging this washer and dryer behind you like a carry-on bag.
Considering how long it took to get on the flight I could have done my NYC laundry and had it dried before I left.  I might even have made a few bucks doing others clothes!  :)

Finally finishing Hitchcock's stage-bound version of "Juno and the Paycock." So depressing. And I have no sympathy whatsoever for the Paycock. In fact, he irritates me to the point that it has made the movie almost unbearable. That may have been the point, but entertaining it ain't.

I love "Juno and the Paycock!" I saw the Abbey Theatre production in Manhattan about 15 years ago. Yes, he is an irritating character; he and Joxer are two of Juno's crosses she bears. That play does pile on the unhappiness.

Tonight I watched Anna Faris, whom I love, in WHAT'S YOUR NUMBER. I laughed a lot.

You know, I might enjoy it in another production. I just didn't care for the movie. And I like the score for the musical, depressing as it is.

Well, the three reviews of "Carrie" I've seen are saying that, sure, the show is better, but better doesn't mean good. Still, I wonder if we'll get a cast recording this time. I have a feeling teenagers will want to do the show regardless and that album will certainly help.

Bruce, why are you leaving Vitello's? Do you have another venue lined up?

We're not leaving - Michael Sterling who was booking the shows is leaving - something he promised would never happen when we were first talking about moving.  The new venue is only five minutes away in North Hollywood - I'll give it one try there - if we have a good crowd and if I like the room, we'll stay - if not, back to the Gardenia.

Back from dinner.  Had a good rehearsal for the most part.  It should be a good show.  Dinner was fun.  And now I'm doing my best to get through the new Follies recording, but I doubt I will - the dialogue excerpts are ham-fisted - and this label seems to specialize in making large orchestras sound tiny - all thanks to providing no spatial ambience around them.  A recording is a RECORDING - instruments need air - in the kinds of studios that these albums are done in, there is no air - it has to be added.  Goddard new this, and so did all the others.  Now, no one seems to know this - the vocals are so forward in the mix it's really uncomfortable listening to them, and they, too, are almost completely dry.  If this is what it's come to, I don't really need to hear any more cast albums.  I'll just replay all my classic show albums from a time when they knew how to do this.  And since all I ever did was try to ape that great ambience, I can also listen to mine :)

Who's That Woman - well, where's the BAND?  Funny, but I could have sworn Mr. Tunick wrote a drum part.  And all that improvising and yakking during the great dance music - awful.  I'll take the truncated original any day of the week.  And the person who is served worse on this recording?  Bernadette Peters - I liked her in the theater, but here she's so mannered and her voice needs space - she has zero.

Well, this is very interesting...during rehearsal, Pug (director of "A Bucket of Blood") asked people if they had suggestions for beatnik music that could be used in the background or during scene changes.  I loaned her my copy of the soundtrack to "Little Shop of Horrors (http://www.kritzerland.com/horrors.htm)" (released by Kritzerland) and Pug loved it.  However, she said that she realized that "A Bucket of Blood" and "Little Shop of Horrors" use the same music!  And then today, Pug sent me this e-mail:

Quote
So I was looking up more royalty free Corman movies and happened upon "The Wasp Woman" and saw this: The film's musical score, written by Fred Katz, was originally written for A Bucket of Blood. According to Mark Thomas McGee, author of Roger Corman: The Best of the Cheap Acts, each time Katz was called upon to write music for Corman, Katz sold the same score as if it were new music. The score was used in a total of seven films, including The Little Shop of Horrors and Creature from the Haunted Sea.

Very interesting indeed!
