Well, you've read the notes, the notes were carbonara-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having some spaghetti cowbonara.

God morning, all! The laundry is in the washers, and I'm on my first cup of coffee.

I really liked MY WEEK WITH MARILYN. I had read Colin Clark's first book about the making of the Olivier-Monroe film, THE PRINCE, THE SHOWGIRL, AND ME, in my last years at The Drama Book Shop, and I really enjoyed it. Since that was around 16 years ago now, my memory of the book is vague, but I believe the film adheres pretty closely to that. I liked the cast quite a lot - I'd forgotten how kind  Dame Sybil Thorndike had been to Monroe while Olivier got uglier - and I thought Judi Dench made a great Dame Sybil. Michelle Williams only reminded me at times of Monroe, but I really liked her performance. I also thought Kenneth Branagh had the similar situation with playing Olivier, but it was a really wonderful performance. At the film's end I was quite moved by it.

So, today, once the laundry is over, I've got the EILEEN Act Three libretto to type up and several missives from Philadelphia to address, dome good, some tedious.

The photos the moon last night were truly awesome. Thank you, DRs Laura and John G!

DR George, I'm glad your birthday festivities are going well. I'm going for more coffee.

Hi all!

Hope all are doing well and are happy.

Sorry for being E & T.  There just is a lot going on and I have a lot on my mind here lately.

The surveyor came and did their thing.  It was really interesting to watch.  I think they will have the space they need to put the room on.  Yay!

Cilla, I must have been channeling you last night as I had a very vivid dream where I wanted a kind of parquet oak table that was at an Estate Sale, but I let someone else have it for $190.  I remember this incredibly well, which is weird, as usually I forget my dreams.

I remember more about this dream:  after leaving the sale I decided to take a little side road which I had never been on before, but it popped me out next to a freeway entrance where I knew where I was and I was heading off to Fred Meyer.  Isn't that outre?

My almost 3 year old niece decided she wanted to play the game GUESS WHO with me yesterday.

It's a game where there are 25 people/or 25 animals on the other side of the board. Two people play. You each pick one person/animal and then ask questions to try to guess what the other picked.

I play this with my other niece all the time.
Title: Re: CARBONARA
Post by: Jennifer on May 06, 2012, 09:47:05 AM
Anyhow there was really no way a 2-3 year old could play this. But she insisted.

So i figured we'd each pick a person. And then we'd ask some questions and see what happened.

So i asked her my first question "is your person a girl". She answers yes (which is already not good since there are only like 5 girls). Then i say "is your person a red-head?". Well she says yes. But i realize she doesn't know what a red-head is. ANd since there is only one girl with red hair....

It turns out she was a blonde kid. So i asked her to pick another person, and this time to pick a boy (since there are 20 boys on the board.

She tells me" I am not a boy auntie, I am a girl and i will not choose a boy!" :)

I tried to convince her it didn't mean she was a boy. And that there were only 5 girls on the board. But she wouldn't budge. :)

My best thing - among many - a framed set of 5 James Dean photos from the "sweater" session....for about $2.

Thing I thought would never sell - and did: half of a desk, it was only the 3 drawers with a flat unfinished top, no legs so it set flat on the floor.

PBS tends to cut nudity, if there is any, and other things they find offenssive or off-putting in their "adaptations" of the British programs.  The amount of USA cuts depends on whether it comes from Boston or another PBS station.

They also cut language but in a helter skelter manner. When they first aired "Company," they bleeped words in the lyrics but the same words when used not in the dialogue. Go figure.

Good question. I once sold a rug I had purchased in Mexico many moons ago. It was in great condition and I always liked it, but I was moving and trying to pare down. It wasn't the sort of thing I expected to be popular in the DC area. But you only need ONE buyer, right? Once I had a buyer I kept thinking I should have asked more for it. But it needed a new home.

I can't even think of the best thing I got at a yard sale.  I have some really cool stuff I've gotten at total bargain prices.  There was a sale last summer that was almost all antiques.

I had a quarter on a bunch of pans that were burned and in bad shape, they came from a box at an auction.  every one of them sold.that surprised me.   I do price things to sell.

I've discussed this previously, spoiling many things in the process.   ;D

PBS slightly edited the original broadcast versions--nothing major, just a clip here and there.  It's mostly noticeable in the abrupt cuts in the music cues.  The DVDs present the original unedited versions.

Sorry for being E & T.  There just is a lot going on and I have a lot on my mind here lately.

Well, now that I'm all caught up, I need to leave.  I have to take a shower, get dressed and go to my sister's for the family's celebration.  My sister and niece sent me a gift certificate for Amazon.com, so I already have that.  I'm sure that I'll just get more gift certificates/cards, which is fine by me. :D

Until later!

LOL :D

Although this dvd says original UK version. ANd i have no idea what they have been showing here.

PBS tends to cut nudity, if there is any, and other things they find offenssive or off-putting in their "adaptations" of the British programs.  The amount of USA cuts depends on whether it comes from Boston or another PBS station.

Is there nudity at DOWNTON‽  I don't remember any.

Jennifer, the DVDs of Downton Abbey are uncut.  The BROADCASTS are cut.

The episodes here run 1 hour. But i noticed that the episodes on the dvd run a bit longer. Do you think there is a big difference? I've watched the first two on the dvd. But will probably watch some of the others from what i recorded.

I'm sort of confused because it says original UK version on the dvd. But there is all kinds of PBS/Masterpiece theatre stuff on the dvd.

And I didn't record it from PBS. There is a station here called Vision tv that replayed seasons 1 and 2. So i don't even know if they are showing the PBS version.

I ended up not starting it right away. I still have 2 more loads of laundry. But i have the dishwasher going.

I've discussed this previously, spoiling many things in the process.   ;D

PBS slightly edited the original broadcast versions--nothing major, just a clip here and there.  It's mostly noticeable in the abrupt cuts in the music cues.  The DVDs present the original unedited versions.

The thing is i'm not watching it on PBS. So i don't even know if they are using the PBS version. I guess they probably are.

Although right now i'm watching the dvd. But i'm not sure if i want to watch all of season 1 before returning it. Since there is a lot of stuff on tv tonight that i want to watch.

Now i am eagerly waiting for the finale of TAR. I"m not sure who i want to win.  I think the most deserving is blonde Rachel and hubby. Although I like Rachel and Brendan (I know most people hate them) and would like them to win. I am so-so on the Border Patrol guys. I don't think they are particularly nice. But they have come first a lot of times. So they would be semi-deserving. The team that sort of bus me is the dating couple (forget their names is hers Vanessa?) They are not really too good. Almost always come in last or near the end. I think if they won it would be shocking.

Hmmm.....a topic for Sunday.....hmmmmm......

Inspired by DR CILLA LIZ and the dream of DR JMK:

What is the best thing you have purchased at a yard sale.....AND what it the thing you put in a yard sale that you never thought would sell....and by golly....somebody bought it?

Tough one to answer, because I'd have to sift through a decade or more of yard (or "tag" in this part of the world) sale adventures to determine what the top few things were.  One that always comes easily to mind, though, is an early-1960s Fisher tube receiver, all original, in the wood cabinet, working beautifully, for ten dollars.  I drive by that house a couple of times each week, and never fail to think about that.

EDIT:  It's one like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-FISHER-500-B-STEREO-TUBE-AMPLIFIER-RECEIVER-ALL-ORIGINAL-TUBES-/190668404282?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item2c64b8f63a#ht_1555wt_952

As for part two, I've never put anything in a yard sale.  No, that's not exactly true.  While I'd probably never have one myself, I have contributed things to, say, community sales and the like.  And to thrift shops.  But honestly, I don't remember what I was surprised to see get snatched up.  The greater surprises are the things that didn't get snatched up, and I'm talking some fairly nice books and records and even laserdiscs and such, when contributed to library sales where people go to look for this stuff.  You just never know.

Greatest find at a yard sale? A number of cast albums when I was younger, including "Donnybrook," which I stillw ant on CD. I also remember finding a rolling pin that I still use for pie crusts and the like.

I made $39.50 at the yard sale and I think I spent about the same amount. So that was great. Since I never used the stuff I sold and to me it was all junk, I came out way ahead.  Mom said I was crazy to price things as low as I did, but almost everything sold, so I think I priced it just fine

Well, today's birthday celebration at my sister's house was nice.  I got a couple of gift cards, a new comforter AND a new cable modem for my computer!  It's up and running and running quite well.  I'll eventually hook up the router to see if it works...and stays working.  I've had trouble in the past where I'd hook up the router and everything would work for a while but shortly afterward, my modem would just stop working.  As soon as I'd take off the router, the modem would be fine again.

Back from a great show - the only downside of which is the boys did end up using lyric sheets with two song exceptions - I won't allow it to happen again.  One of them had done his song perfectly at sound check, no problems at all - then he brought up his lyrics when he did it in the show - and, of course, it becomes a total crutch and they worry more about finding their place and "think" they're forgetting things when if they didn't have the crutch, they would remember.  He got a ton of laughs on the song, and every one of those laughs were in places where he was off the page.  He blew a few laughs thanks to looking down, trying to figure out where he was, and just taking the audience right out of the song.

At work on Thursday, it was suggested to me that I be at some meeting on Monday, but I wasn't told what it was about or what time it was actually happening.  Since I usually get to work by 10:30, I hope that the meeting is after that.  If not...oh well and too bad.  I'm pretty sure that it was only a suggestion that I be there, so I really don't have to worry about it if I don't make it in time.  But just in case, I'm going to go to bed now and try to get to work a little earlier than usual.
