Well, you've read the notes, the notes had good news about Flicks, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're also thrilled about Flicks, as well as Fizzies.

Good morning, all! I slept rather well, with lots of bizarre dreams; I think former friend and jerk Ethan Mordden was in one of them, and the last one involved one of the more obnoxious REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK!

First thing this morning, I have laundry. I will work at home today on ROBERTA and a few other projects before I meet an old friend for dinner and head off to see GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. I have always loved the score, and I'm looking forward to it.

TOD:
DVD: the same old 3 Netflix and a whole pil of new things
CD:  Herbert Songs, some Offenbach, Guy Haines, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Once

I am back from the laundromat. The alarming news of the morning is that one of my neighbors posted a note in the elevator: yesterday afternoon, the door of his and his partner's apartment was spray painted. I wonder if it's a hate crime following Obama's pro-gay marriage stand? I do hope not. I'm sorry this has happened to two really wonderful and talented guys and I'm wondering if this vandalism was performed by another tenant in the building.

Shocking news from DR ELMORE!

The Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream last night indicates you sometimes feel people from your past or past actions keep your work from reaching a wider audience of both the public AND those in the profession.

Good morning all.

Car CD player:  Proust's "Remembrance of Things Past" read by Neville Jason -- a crutch to actually reading the books, which I've gotten halfway through in the past few years, but not nearly fast enough.  I'm committed to doing so, and not just once.  Any more than I would want to get through "The Wire" just once.  Or the Ring Cycle.  As to Proust, this audiobook is a beautiful crutch which I was delighted to score on Amazon Marketplace for a fraction of its usual going value.

Miserable.....but it has it's moments.....of course I have only heard a few YouTube clips and the midi files.  I may feel differently after I hear some of the songs in a week or so.

I am directing John Patrick's THE CURIOUS SAVAGE which is one of my favorite shows.  I will hopefully get a GOOD cast.

Is anybody familiar with the greeting card app on facebook?  It is really bugging the crap out of me.

Someone had sent me one and now this app has my info. Which i wouldn't mind except that it has selectively decided to send some of my friends cards. This i do not like.

It sent my aunt one today. It shows 4 people on a list that have birthdays coming up in the next few weeks. Beside that it says "send them a card.". That part is blank. So i didn't think it would send them cards. But obviously it is planning on it.

And i really don't want it to do this. Their help feature is not helpful at all. There was an email feature which i used. I guess if they don't respond then i will just disable it. There should be a much easier way to do this especially since i never signed up for this app (only read a card sent to me).

Does anybody know anything about what i should do?

I felt the same way about listening to Proust. Almost too musical to listen to, those magnificent swirling sentences just getting all gnarled in sounds and twisted around each other so that the meaning gets lost in the delivery.

Why I Love Zach Department:  we had been experiencing this weird puddle of water under our refrigerator and I knew it had something to do with the auto defrost but couldn't figure it out (nor could two repairmen).  Well the other day I heard the trickle of water from the defrost, got a flashlight and discovered due to the engineering prowess of Whirlpool Corporation, the little tray they have in there to catch the effluent doesn't go far back enough to be totally under the tube that discharges the water.

So today I rigged up a bent piece of cardboard, stuck it in a Ziploc bag and had Zach shove it in the tray, dangling over the back lip so that any water will fall on it then drain into the tray.  I thought it was quite a brilliant lo-fi solution. Zach looked at me and said, "You know this is our most ghetto repair yet."  :)

Blu-ray – “Despair”. I rented this because I’d not seen it before. It’s also one of the few Dirk Bogarde film I’d never seen. The only other Fassbinder film I’ve seen is “Fear Eats the Soul” which is excellent and I was really impressed with “Despair” which is a terrific, fascinating film with a remarkable free-flowing camera style. The picture quality is superb and the restoration credits at the end include complete cast and crew credits (credits are limited on the original) which is a nice touch. Maybe DNRphobes should avert their eyes at the degraining credit though!

You can't unlike it.  Normally i would also refuse an app. But it was a birthday card.

It was a birthday card which i opened at the time. But now it has a list of people on my friend's list who have birthdays (not all just a few).

It should have a list but it should give you the option to send or not send the card. I feel bad because it sent my aunt a card from me and she thinks i actually sent it. But i don't want it sending cards to random people from me. So i think i will have to block the app.  I find it ridiculous.

That's terrible! >:(

I applaud the two brave ladies who were arrested in North Carolina today for applying for a marriage license. It's bad enough that the Republicans keep throwing a White Anglo Saxon Protestant and a Catholic God into laws concerning a nation of many religions but it's sadder that so many assholes believe it should be this way.and support what I can only call a criminal state of affairs.

End of soapbox!

I loved Flicks when I was a kid.  Those foil-covered tubes made the candy seem special, some how.  Looking at them on line, I doubt they still would sell for ten cents a tube.

They were arrested because they refused to leave the premises after they were refused the right to apply for a marriage license, and yes, they planned on doing it so they could begin the process to challenge the hateful, mean-spirited Constitutional Amendment just passed in North Carolina.

Well, I don't think that I did it the way that you were supposed to do it.  My former car died and I went with my sister to a local dealer and took a test drive.  I went back the next day with my mom and she mentioned that I had a Costco card.  The guy said "no problem" and took care of everything.  I just paid $100 over their invoice price (that was the Costco deal).  Essentially, it worked out because the particular Ford dealer that I just happened to go to was a participating dealer.

I just found this link about How the Program Works (http://www.costcoauto.com/new_cars/how_the_program_works/default.aspx).

And yes, I like the way that it worked back then. ;)

I didn't know you could buy a car through Costco. I think that's great.

For DR Laura, I will tell one of my car-buying stories:
Many years ago, when I was living in San Diego county, I needed a new car and wanted  a new Honda Prelude. Expecting the dreaded high pressure, I asked my friend Mal to accompany me. Now, Mal is no fool; he's a pretty tough cookie. I thought he'd help me negotiate a good deal. I had overlooked the fact that he is a COMPULSIVE reader. As the salesman and I haggled, Mal was TOTALLY engrossed in a magazine--not a peep from him. I kept looking over at him, thinking, "Aren't you going to say something?" No. As it turned out, I did get a good deal. My first choice of color was grey, but they would have to order one. They had a blue one--my second choice--on the lot and equipped as I wanted. By compromising on color I was able to get the price down considerably. Moral: you get the best deals on the cars on the lot.

Good luck to you, Laura!

Has anyone here bought a car using Costco?

Someone I hike with just did.  She was pleased and said they find the best price for you.  They drove several hours to pick it up.

I don't know if they did better than Keith would have.  When we bought my car he priced everywhere & then got the local dealer to match it.  Why he went locally I don't know since he said he never wanted to purchase a car from them again.  Now he swears, and truly never will, buy a car from them.

When Zach becomes a homeowner he may have a new appreciation for low-cost repairs.

Thinking about foodstuffs.  I've only had a turkey sandwich and that was at eleven-fifteen.  Choices, choices - decisions, decisions - then I'll watch the second of the Branagh Wallander series, but I've already found out that in the first one they were not faithful to the novel AT ALL.  Therefore, I may stop after this one and wait for the June release of the original Swedish series of films based on the novels, with a different actor than the one who ultimately did the Swedish series one and two, which were not, save for one, based on the novels.

BTW JMK , have you heard that Edmundo Ros will be scoring the unedited version of Downton Abbey?

I am surprised you hadn't mentioned it

I was too busy reading RLP's posts about ABC.   ;D

Keith, Sherlock and I went out for an early Mother's Day lunch.  We were able to sit in the corner by the window of the hotel lobby.  Sherlock enjoyed the comfort of the carpets & all the attention he received from the staff and hotel guests.
Sounds nice.

I received a mint souvenir book from the 1969 Goodbye, Mr. Chips today.  Betsy came home and immediately went over and began repeatedly tapping the cover with her long, pointed fingernail, asking, "Who's that actress again?"  "Well, it was Petula Clark before you obliterated her face."   ;D

Went to the opening of a new catering venue  tonight. The chef/owner has created Mexican villa in the middle of a rather unkempt part of town. In front of the house was a gorgeous koi pond with about 25 fish in it and a really nice flagstone that you could stand on to see them better. I hope there was no heron in the vicinity.

Nothing says San Antonio hospitality like a freshly made margarita.

I am ver tired and haven't caught up yet, but had to tell you all I went to a fundraiser for a local news anchor who had to have a liver transplant.  I bought some raffle tickets and won the Merry Maids gift certificate.  2 merry maids for 3 hours!!! woo and hoo!!  Can I ever use that.   Think I'll schedule it the beginning of June so I can have them clean after I finish stripping the wall paper and painting the spare room over Memorial Day weekend.  Now I know the house will be clean to start the summer.

I am back from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, still smiling broadly from the outrageousness of it all and reveling in the fantastic score. This is one recording I am really looking forward to. There's so much cut from the OBC, especially in the Hugh Martin vocal and Trude Rittman dance arrangements, and they work beautifully with Don Walker's orchestrations. The cast is very good; I really like Rachel York, Simon Jones, Debrah Rush, and a very funny nerdish Aaron Lazar, who's a really handsome man. I'm still out on Megan Hilty, who I thought was perfect casting on paper but didn't seem outrageous enough to me in performance. She veers toward the Monroe version of Lorelei rather than Channing, but the Monroe film isn't nearly as funny as this  musical's libretto, and the libretto isn't as screamingly funny or as dark as the original, absolutely brilliant novel.

The closest the musical gets to the novel is in the "Diamonds are A Girl's Best Friend" number in which she justifies herself. The brilliance of the humor in the novel, which is Lorelei's diary, comes from her lousy spelling, pretensions, off the cuff idiocy and playing the helpless baby doll combined with her  survival instincts as she reaches decisions, such as leaving a man who truly loves her for another who's wealthy but repellent, and justifies her behavior. The Lorelei of the musical is not the gold digging whorish idiot of the book; she's a dizzy, rather dumb, but likeable flapper who's surrounded by gentlemen wanting to protect her, set her up in a nice apartment and hope she's faithful. Hilty has a big bosom and a sense of humor, but the clownish side of the role isn't there for me. I feel the parody or caricature of the pretty little helpless and naive blonde needing male protection is what's missing along with a full realization of Lorelei's general stupidity. In the first number, "Bye Bye Baby," Lorelei sings to Gus, her sugar daddy, "I'll be with my diary and that book by Mr Gideon." She's dumb and doesn't know it's the Bible, but Hilty sings it was an "Amen" pose that says she does know, and I think that's wrong. I did like her and Simon's "It's Delightful Down In Chile" very much, and she delivers a good "Diamonfds Are A Girl's Best Friend." I think she could have poured on the Arkansas accent a bit more/

Randy Skinner's choreography is wonderful, from the great "I Love What I'm Doing When I'm Doing It For Love" number for the barechested Olympic team and Dorothy to the wonderful ballet isetting of "Sunshine." And then, in Act Two, Randy brings down the house with "Mamie Is Mimi" for two black tap dancers and Gloria, the always precticing chorus girl. It's a wonderful show. And if you've never read the novel, you should. It's funny. Very funny.

Are they recording it? I would love to hear those Hugh Martin vocal arrangements.

And that book is a riot. I remember reading it years ago and loving most every word.

Also cancelled:

Harry's Law :(
Secret Circle :(
Ringer
Pan Am
Missing
The River.

Renewed:

Nikita, gossip girl, hart of dixie (all from the CW).

Of these, the only ones I watched were "Harry's Law" and "Pan Am."  "The River" starred Eloise Mumford who's from Olympia, Washington!  I remember seeing her in local community theater productions.  She still definitely has a career ahead of her.

And speaking of Hugh Martin and his involvement with BLONDES...have you read this article on Playbill.com by Encores! music director Rob Berman?:
