Well, you've read the notes, the notes basked in the glory of last evening, and now it is time for you to post until the basking cows come home.

Here's the Blu-ray and CD for Junior High School:

Kritzerland is proud to present two new releases – our second Blu-ray release and the soundtrack CD for the award-winning classic short musical film

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Junior High School was born out of a love of musicals.  Its creators loved the form, embraced the form, and raised enough money to make a short musical film that is utterly charming and a complete delight from start to finish.   David Wechter and Michael Nankin had already directed a critically acclaimed short film called Gravity, which had gotten them noticed.  Two years later, just out of college, they joined some other friends, to make another audacious short film – a real musical about a fictional junior high school.  This was, of course, long before High School Musical and Glee.  In 1978 there was no middle school; there was elementary school, junior high, and high school.   The times they were a’changing – the late 1970s and early 1980s were the end of a certain kind of era, and Junior High School reflects that beautifully.  There is a sweetness and innocence to the film that’s palpable, even if it includes the classic song, “The Itty-Bitty Titty Committee.”

Made for under $35,000 (the filmmakers raised the money and received a grant from the American Film Institute), the film was shot in one month at John Muir Junior High School in Burbank, California.  It was a family affair, with many relatives and friends appearing in the film and working behind the scenes.  Kids from all over LA auditioned, and the chosen cast is just so real and perfect, you can’t imagine it being better, although only one of the actors went on to have a significant career – PAULA ABDUL.

The film is beautifully directed and shot (in 16mm), and David Wechter’s tuneful and clever songs are delightful, as is the script.   David’s father, the great Julius Wechter, arranged the songs and wrote an original score.  Julius, of course, was the leader of the popular Baja Marimba Band.  He assembled some amazing players for the soundtrack recording, including several of the infamous Wrecking Crew.  They include such luminaries as Bernie Fleischer, Bobby Findley (of the Tijuana Brass), Lou McCreary, Tommy Tedesco, Dave Frishberg (who also appears and sings in the film), Steve Schaefer, and the engineer was the great Larry Levine (pioneer of Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound”).

Junior High School won awards in dozens of film festivals and was an immediate sensation, so much so that critic Roger Ebert said, “I think it’s probably impossible not to be charmed out of your socks by Junior High School.”   As a direct result of the audience and critical response to the film, Wechter and Nankin were hired by Walt Disney Studios to make a feature – at the ripe old age of twenty-three.  That film, Midnight Madness, while not a hit, developed a major cult following that continues to this day.

The Blu-ray has a commentary track, and two retrospective featurettes, Junior High School Reunion and Return to Junior High School as well as Wechter and Nankin’s other short film, Gravity.  The CD release has several bonus tracks, including demos from Midnight Madness, Malibu Bikini Shop, and the never made feature version of Junior High School, which was being developed by United Artists.

The CD of Junior High School is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.  The Blu-ray is $19.98, plus shipping.  CD and Blu-ray will ship the first week of September, however, never fear, we usually get in copies one to five weeks in advance of the official ship date (we’ve been averaging four weeks).

And here's the Baja Marimbas:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new, limited edition CD

LAZY DAYS  JULIUS WECHTER AND THE BAJA MARIMBAS

Julius Wechter and the Baja Marimba band were one of A&M Records’ most popular artists.  Their records were fun, tuneful, and unique and a perfect compliment to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.  At the end of the 1980s, Julius assembled some amazing musicians and created the Baja Marimbas – basically to just have fun and to keep the music alive.  This recording, originally done on the Bay Cities label and titled New Deal, was their one and only album.  It has been out of print for almost two decades and we are thrilled to make it available once again to Baja fans everywhere.

It has been remastered with tender loving care and sounds better than ever.  We’ve also included with a few great bonus tracks making their CD debut. This Baja Marimbas is leaner than the Baja Marimba Band, but it is no less wonderful – the music is infectious and amazing, with great players doing both standards and originals.  Hear such great tunes as “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “But Not for Me,” “Lazy Days,” “Pavanne,” “Baja Noce,” and others.  Bonus tracks include, “Nine on a Match,” “Green Bird,” “Alone Again, Naturally,” the theme from “Deep Throat,” and a commercial for the Santa Anita Race track.

Lazy Days is like a trip back in time to an era when music could just be fun – fun, beautifully performed, and with melodies you can actually hum and tunes you can actually tap your feet to.

Lazy Days is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $17.98, plus shipping.

Also be sure to check out Julius Wechter’s great work (both score and arrangements) on his son David Wechter’s (with Michael Nankin) award-winning short film, Junior High School, which has a new Blu-ray and CD release right here at Kritzerland.

CD will ship the first week of September, however, never fear, we usually get in copies one to five weeks in advance of the official ship date (we’ve been averaging four weeks).

Not much else to report.

We are watching a mediocre Britcom called My Family. It ran from 2000 to 2011 with Christmas episodes starting in 2002. I don't know that we will watch all the episodes. It's run on Channel 21 and Anthony's mother is recording it for us. There are 120 episodes. We're only watching it because it stars Zoe Wanamaker and Robert Lindsay, two great talents wasted in this hit and miss piece of fluff full of bad writing and absurd plots.

That being said, apparently it was a big hit in England, having run for so long and producing 120 episodes.

Good morning, all!  I slept quite well last night, I think the rain cooled things down enough to make it quite pleasant.

Today, I am out and about for a bit: pharmacy, barber, Toyland, and I hope the day goes well.  I also hope I will return and find the elevator running.

DR Ben, when I was recording in London in 2001 and 2002, I saw quite a few episodes of MY FAMILY. I like Wanamaker and Lindsay a lot, but I never felt it was a very good sitcom. I really liked him on ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, looking a bit like Dudley Moore these dats. But I've never understood the success of the dreadful VICAR OF DIBLEY either!

Good news about the show, BK!

~~~~~~~~~~~~  Good Beginning-of-the-Week Vibes to one and all! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DR vixmom - You and your vixfamily will be fine when you travel next week. The big thing to check is which Terminal at LGA you will be flying out of. With the various takeovers and consolidations of airlines over the past few years, some of the airlines now depart from two terminals at LGA.
Otherwise, just get there early enough to leave yourself enough time to breathe after you get through the TSA screening. And LGA has recently upgraded their food and dining options and some of them are pretty good.
And yesterday afternoon, I attended another Mostly Mozart concert featuring the International Contemporary Ensemble - or ICE (http://www.iceorg.org) for short.
One of the themes for this year's MM is "bird song", and ICE's program featured various compositions that featured birdsong in them - both literal and figurative. It was a great concert, and one of the compositions utilized the hall's excellent sound system for some very effective aural and digitally-processed effects.
It is summer time - and the money is NOT easy.  Gasoline at nearly $4 per gallon means I am paying about $12 to do theatre....and when I do theatre, I don't work as many hours as I usually do.....8 hours per week, sometimes 4 hours....instead of the usual 16 hours.
Which is just a way of saying, I only afford ONE of the Kritzerland releases today.  So I purchased the Baja Marimba CD!!!
I was wondering about that, too, plus the logistics in general.  Television equipment being what it was in those days, surely the cast and crew of the show knew that something of the sort was happening...no?  And I always wondered if the honored person was always as totally in the dark as was let on.  Quite possibly all of this really worked as a surprise back then.  There's no doubt my cynicism arises from today's "reality" shows.
DR CHAS SMITH - I think as Mr Edwards mentioned in a January, 1958, episode.....one of the very few "honorees" who was told in advance about the show was Miss Frances Farmer.
He was worried that she might get violent with him if he tried to surprise her.
Greetings from Toyland!
My hair is cut, but the social security situation will continue until I am back from Dublin. My accountant has taken the week off.
I am waiting for a visitor named Drew, who wants to be an orchestrator. Silly boy! There are no longer orchestras on Broadway.
I think so....at least the participants.....in a group setting like Alexis was in.....I guess everyone was afraid it was them.....I love Dorothy Collins saying...."Oh, no!!!"
And of course in the Frances Farmer episode the look she gives Ralph when he mentions her first husband Leif Ericson....like she was afraid he was going to bring Leif in......
I just finished the book that MR BK has been talking about - musings from the dancers of WEST SIDE STORY.  Mr Harvey Evans mentioned it in his interview......
I ahve to agree with MR BK - there is a great book in the subject.....somewhere.....but it's not here, I don't think.  Interesting....but not worth the small effort it took to get it together.
I enjoyed watching the THIS IS YOUR LIFE with Alexis Smith from the link last night - was that the theatre orchestra playing those cues?  That must have been a golden hours bonanza for them.  Did the audience stay to watch....AFTER a performance?
Ralph Edwards never changes - he is not pleasant to watch.
Good thing Edwards waited to do this until the show came to L.A.--no one would have stayed in the theatre district in NYC past 11:00 in 1971.
DR Jennifer,
I have an electric bike and a regular bike.  The electric bike is very heavy but does have an electric option.  It's great for the huge hills I deal with in literally every direction from my house (I'm about 3/4 the way up a huge hill) No matter what direction I go, there is a big hill either leaving or coming back home.  However it's extremely heavy, which would be a pain to put it in and out of the car to go to the rides, some are 30-60 miles from here, and you can't ride it in the rain.   So, it's perfect for around the neighborhood kind of rides like I"ve done the past couple days, but for a longer ride, I'd take my regular bike.
Even the electric bike is essentially pedal assist.  So I have to pedal up the hills, it's just a heck of a lot easier.  I get tired even riding the electric bike, lol.  I really need to build up my stamina.
Every time i get involved with the Library of Congress on a concert, it turns out to be hell. Today, something so simple has become another megillah with too many cooks in the kitchen.
Maybe I'm crabby from the heat, AC and elevator? Perhaps.
Has anyone here seen the Amazon Lockers? They're being set up in a number of stores, such as 7-Elevens, so you can have your packages sent there instead of to your home or office. You then pick them up at your convenience.
SO, today my mother went to their house in my home town to get some things..then left and went to the lake (15 miles away)  She got ready to make dinner and thought "OMG I lift the meat on the steps at home"   So, she called her neighbors (a couple in their 80s) and they went to the house.  First the key didn't work, then they somehow got past that and they didn't get the code in the security system soon enough.
So there they were. This quiet couple, seriously typical Garrison Keillor type Lutherans.  The system is blaring. They didn't know the magic word when the security called so the police came.  They called my brother who still can't drive after his bypass, so he said he couldn't help them....finally the security company reached my parents...neither one of them could remember what their secret word was.  I'm not sure how, but somehow it was finally all resolved.
Where was the meat that started all this?   In the refrigerator.  Mom had never taken it out.   LOL.
DR Jennifer,
I have an electric bike and a regular bike.  The electric bike is very heavy but does have an electric option.  It's great for the huge hills I deal with in literally every direction from my house (I'm about 3/4 the way up a huge hill) No matter what direction I go, there is a big hill either leaving or coming back home.  However it's extremely heavy, which would be a pain to put it in and out of the car to go to the rides, some are 30-60 miles from here, and you can't ride it in the rain.   So, it's perfect for around the neighborhood kind of rides like I"ve done the past couple days, but for a longer ride, I'd take my regular bike.
Even the electric bike is essentially pedal assist.  So I have to pedal up the hills, it's just a heck of a lot easier.  I get tired even riding the electric bike, lol.  I really need to build up my stamina.
Okay I didn't realize it was so heavy or that you couldn't ride it in the rain.
DR CHAS SMITH - I think as Mr Edwards mentioned in a January, 1958, episode.....one of the very few "honorees" who was told in advance about the show was Miss Frances Farmer.
He was worried that she might get violent with him if he tried to surprise her.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de00c3ggHLw
And yet, Miss Farmer seems more out of it than many others who were actually surprised.  That is what happens after you visit Western State Hospital.
It didn't seem like YA to me, either. But I loved it. It moved me to tears several times, although that could be my mother's history, which played a big part of what I brought to the reading. Her grandparents on her mother's side died in concentration camps for trying to help Jews escape on the trains, for which my great-grandfather worked.
I love Orson Welles at his wittiest. I have become a Negroni addict, but I never researched the history until now. Wikipedia, that most reliable of sources, offers the following tidbit:
 One of the earliest reports of the drink came from Orson Welles in correspondence with the Coshocton Tribune while working in Rome on Cagliostro in 1947, where he described a new drink called the Negroni, "The bitters are excellent for your liver, the gin is bad for you. They balance each other."
So far, I've been able to get to the Internet (free wi-fi at work...love that!) and listen to a Kritzerland mp3 sample, but YouTube doesn't work, yet. :P I have to figure out what I need to install.
Small world.  I just bought a HP Notebook.  Unfortunately, I will have to send it back.  The display monitor does not display anything, nor does the screen even light up.
Did you charge the battery?
It didn't tell me to charge the battery.  It said to install the battery - I did.  It said to plug it into the wall - I did.  It said to trun on the  power switch and follow the onscreen instructions - It doesn't.  I will try to charge it, but I wished it had told me that.
The temperature is 14 degrees cooler than yesterday, so I am going to try to catch up on my sleep.
And Ginny, I will be happy to tell you what you need to know about tonight's Olympics.
Mine didn't say to charge the battery, either.  However, it shows the battery level on the main screen, so I could tell that it needed to be charged.  I don't know how long it takes to fully charge and I'll have to wait to find out how long the battery actually lasts.
TOD - without a doubt - Skip's fried chicken
For any HHWer who has not had the extreme luck and privilege to have been hosted by dear FJL and his everlovin' Skip - Skip is a spectacular chef and his fried chicken is simply the best I  have ever had the pleasure of eating
But before I go...
PAGE SEVEN TITUS ANDRONICUS DANCE!!
I was thinking TIGHT-ASS ANDRONICUS would be a hi-larious parody title, but google says it's been done - like hundreds of times.
What about Tight-Ass Androgynous??
;)
Jennifer, I just looked it up and the bike weighs 54 pounds.  That seems lighter than I thought, but maybe it doesnt' include the battery.  Still it's a heavy bike
54 lbs seems heavy. But do you have to actually lift it a lot?
So many threads hanging on THE CLOSER at the moment, and I will be in Dublin for the ending!  I'm already projecting horrible endings for those in the cast not going on to MAJOR CRIMES, and I admit my curiosoty is killing me. I really liked tonight's episode. I guess the leak (sorta!) several months ago.
I finished The Book Thief Saturday night.  I thought it was a very different but good book.  It didn't really seem YA to me
I haven't read it. It doesn't sound like a YA topic. But I guess since the narrator is under 20 (I'm assuming) that is why it is considered YA.
There are many different levels of YA.  There are some books that are definitely geared towards younger readers. But there is a ton now that is much more complex (especially dystopia). But it all comes under the YA general category.
Not sure when NBC is showing the Women's soccer match (US/Canada) so I won't spoil it. But what a crazy match! I don't normally watch soccer (although I do watch a lot of Olympics, especially whenever Canada is going for a medal).
No, but I would if I was going to take it to the organized rides with friends :)
Actually what I'm finding is there are decent deals if you don't stay Friday and Saturday night.   I'm thinking 3 nights.  I realize weeknights aren't that easy for a get together, but it may save me literally hundreds of dollars
Finished with my viewing and really hungry, actually.  Never had time to jog today, but have only eaten a turkey sandwich and no fries or onion rings, some carrots, a couple of seventy calorie cheese wedges and an apple.  I think I'm a little too under 1000 calories, but the thing is, what will satisfy my hunger and only be a couple hundred calories.  I could go get a six-inch Subway sandwich - that's only about 300 calories if you get the right thing.
Just spent the evening lazing about, watching some Olympics, followed by William Castle's I SAW WHAT YOU DID (1965) and INVADERS FROM MARS (1953).  I had seen the former when it was released but remembered almost nothing of it, and I'm not sure I'd ever seen the latter at all.
DR Cillaliz - Hotel rates in NYC during the holidays are... well... Not cheap.
I'd start by checking out sites like Booking.com, Roomkey.com, Hotels.com, etc., and seeing what kind of deals come up there. -And then go directly to a couple of hotel websites and see if those rates can be matched or beaten. Otherwise, book as early as you can.
