Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Bondian, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently watching their favorite Bond film, MOOnraker.

I of course am working all day today.   Oh well.

However the director of THE CRUCIBLE has agreed that I can have Sunday and Monday evenings off since I only have ONE LINE in Act Two.

Good morning, all! I amstill uncertain about my fay. I had originally planned to go to Toyland but I'm going to hang out around the apartment and take it easy. I have a trip to make to the post office and pharmacy shortly, and then I'll spend the day tidying the apartment.

This weekend is a Miami University gathering in Manhattan. The school of Fine Arts has a concert involving Miami's music groups at Carnegie Hall tomorrow afternoon, and I hope to be there. Tonight, I will attend at Sardi's a reception between 6 and 8pm. I look forward to seeing several friends, and perhaps meeting a few others.

My father's family background is Appalachian White Trash; every trip I can remember to see my grandmother had at least one fried chicken dinner, if not two. We'd pull up in my grandmother's driveway and she'd grab a passing chicken, wring its neck, and fry it for dinner.

Best TOD Answer of All Time?

With that, I think the rest of us might be well advised, like Mr. Connery, to quit while we're ahead.

Good morning, all.

Coffee!

I must needs get ready to drive over to the Lafayette in Suffern, NY (not to be confused with Suffern, Succotash) for a 35mm showing of THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP which I somehow have manged to never see.

TOD:

I'm sure Mom made the first fried chicken I ever ate. Wonderfully crisp and with plenty of salt. We did not use black pepper ever in my house because my dad doesn't like and he read somewhere that it causes cancer, so that was out the window.

That also meant we were Kentuckians who never ate Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I have had many wonderful versions of fried chicken in soul food and Southern restaurants through the years, so I can't pick out a single favorite. But I did like a Parmesan covered version at a local Italian restaurant. Yum.

It's also what I will likely have for dinner tonight.

I have returned from errands. I fell up the steps at the subway, tore a hole in my left knee and skinned my other leg. I got to the post office to learn that they no longer keep customs form in the open so I had to get in line for thedamend form and then get back in line to post the samend package. I continue to wish the post office an utter ruin ASAP.  Their dumbass employees deserve it.

After all that tsuris, the pharmacy was a breeze and I am all meds-ed up. I did forget to purchase a"neti pot" so I have to deal with that this weekend.

Thanks for the vibes and prayers for Sharon.  I hadn't heard any news so I made a couple phone calls today.  One was to the husband of one of her good friends.  They are backyard neighbors, anyway I have known the husband through work for years so I was more comfortable calling him.    He told me that his wife got a call yesterday that said they were taking her off life support.  He wasn't sure if that was good or bad.  I'm guessing the latter, but you never know, maybe she'll rally.  She's pretty strong willed, it could happen.

The last time I heard they were removing someone from life support was my neighbor who was attacked.  She started breathing on her own.  I haven't heard an update on her for a long time, but she is recovering.

The production I saw of Anything Goes last night was lovely.  Nicely sung, acted, played, etc.  Lots of friends involved.  I decided that I need to see more local theatre.  Not only to get out, but to be "seen" at the theatre by other theatre people, greet them afterward, tell them how great they are to to come audition for my next show :)   I think it's a good thing to see theatre when you actually "do" theatre.  Gonna try and make more of an effort.

This morning, I cleaned up the back yard a bit, built some barricades from an old book shelf (Very Les Mis )- for the dogs, of course.  They bark at the dogs next door, etc, so hopefully this will help a little.  This afternoon I have a wedding to play and I need to get crackin' on some music writing.  An old friend of mine approached me to set some lyrics to music for a musical he is working on.  I'm afraid I'll come out sounding like ALW.  Oh well, it worked for him....

Websites have to keep making "improvements" which invariably make things worse. It used to be easy to resize pictures in Photobucket but they've now made it ultra-complicated.

Interesting notes by bk about James Bond. I saw Dr No when it was first released and loved it but it was Goldfinger which brought everything together and which remains my favorite. I never had a problem with George Lazenbury and OHMSS was one of the very best Bond films. I can't stand the reboot films with Daniel Craig - they are just routine action films using the name of the character. I always thought that for a reboot they should have gone back to the source material and set the films in the '50s at the height of the cold war, which was the most sensible era to have a spy film.

I put my bag of garbage out in the hall yesterday, hoping the assistant manager would notice it and take it out for me.  My wheelchair doesn't work moving through the rutted alley, so I depend on the kindhess of stangers.  I guess there were no kind people yesterday.

When the Safeway delivery guy arrived and openned the door, I saw that the bag was ripped open and the garbage scattered around the hall..  Since they leave the outside door propped open now, I assume that the raccoons paid a visit last night.  Either that, or the little brat across the hall.  Tyler, the very sweet hunk delivery man offered to clean up the garbage for me, and then he took it out to the dumpster for me.  What a sweetheart!  And they can't accept tips.

The women across the hall started to do it after they moved in.  I think they use it for cross ventilation.  And it does make it easier for me to get in and out of the door, because that sucker is really heavy.  Once the weather starts to turn cold, I think they will figure out that they are wasting energy, and will keep the door closed.

Yes, I would prefer that.

When I was pregnant with Bryan I decided to begin my maternity leave on Thanksgiving.  My boss kindly pointed out if I did that I would not get paid for the holiday if I didn't work the day after.  Boy it was hard going back into work for that one day.

Up from a nap. Watching "Gosford Park," which I haven't seen since it came out. Very interesting movie in light of "Downton Abbey." And Maggie Smith is great  in both.

I had to watch it with the subtitles turned on becasue I couldn't understand anything that was said downstairs.  In fact, I  could hardly understand the upstairs dialogue.
I have to do that with my parents and any British movie.

You mean when watching with your parent's vs when they are speaking.  LOL At first I was confused.
I sometimes have to have subtitles when my parents speak, yes, but more often they have to have subtitles if we watch a British movie.  :D

From Bruce:
Quote
Don't think Lawrence ever played the Wilshire - unless it was second run, which the Wilshire didn't usually do.  It played its roadshow at the Stanley Warner Beverly Hills.

Keith saw Lawrence of Arabia during the first run and I never saw it until he took me.  I had no idea the treat I was in for.  It was a big deal it was showing & the theater was packed.  Hey, maybe it was for the 5th anniversary of the movie.

Best fried chicken ever?  The Golden Lamb in Lebanon, Ohio.  Best LA fried chicken - Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles.  Best chain fried chicken - Popeyes.  Best broasted chicken - Amber's.

Rehearsal went very well - only a few lyric flubs, mostly from one performer - he'll drill this evening and I'm sure be fine.  Some piano inconsistencies, so we ran a few things after.  Wonderful cast and wonderful songs but a lot of ballads, just because Mr. Hamlisch did them so well.

T.O.D.

I think I liked my mom's fried chicken best.
I still love KFC Original Recipe
Knott's Berry Farm served really good chicken (at least they did when you were dining with Mr. and Mrs. Knott)

Fried Chicken is not something I normally order when I go out to dinner.

Chicken must be served with real mashed potatoes and gravy, and corn.

Title: Re: BOND, JAMES BOND

I suppose the reason I don't often chicken when I go out to dinner, is that I eat a lot of it at home.  Before I was in this chair, I cooked a lot of baked chicken or sometimes fried chicken.  Even when I made a casserole, a lot of the time it would be chicken with rice or chicken with noodles.  My mother always said that when you went out to dinner you should order somehting that you wouldn't normally have at home.  That would include a turkey dinner or a hot turkey sandwich, because we usually only had turkey once or maybe twice a year.

And I am home. Everyone cleared out at 7:45 to catch an evening performance. Many were going to see PETER AND THE STAR CATCHER. One of our Miami alumni is the assistant company manager. I saw several old friends, several students I'd met on previous trips to Ohio,  and I met some nice people from the university.

I'm happy to be home and settling in.  This afternoon I caught Disc 2 of the BFI DVD of THE DEVILS, and I very much enjoyed the various features.

It's his usual stuff even before the movie has really gotten underway. If he's using the slo-mo action film shots this early, then that means the human element will probably be lacking.

TOD:

First fried chicken?  No question about it -- Sunday dinners at home, or at grandparents' houses.

We stopped once at the original Colonel Sanders restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, on a family road trip sometime around 1960.

I still love the KFC flavor recipe, but I've had chicken I thought was fried better.  Maybe it was Popeye's, but they're not here where I live and I've only had it once or twice.  I think most such places are not like real home-cooked fried chicken, anyway.  Someone correct me if I wrong, but isn't there a real difference between the fast food variety and the way your mother cooked it in a skillet?

In L.A. I used to get Pioneer Chicken because for some reason I thought it might be better than the ubiquitous KFC.  (I later discovered El Pollo Loco, but that isn't your typical fried chicken.)

Never had chicken and waffles, but have wanted to experience it since my first reading of MILDRED PIERCE.

Oh!!!  I've been trying to remember a place, and I believe I should

Ask BK:

Do you recall a quaint little old-timey standalone fried chicken restaurant on Wilshire Blvd., somewhere around the Miracle Mile, maybe a little east of there, north side of street?  Don't remember how good it was, but I had fun eating there once in the 70s.

HOLLYWOOD

This will be completely by memory, and it spans too many years to accurately represent just the period of time I lived there (1972-75).  I returned often during my next few years in Beverly Hills, a bit less during the 80s when I lived on Beverly Drive (near Cashio), Mentone Ave. in Palms, and in “The Village at Redondo Beach” overlooking the Boardwalk.  Went back more frequently again during 1987-89 when I lived in West Hollywood (Kings Rd., a block south of Santa Monica).

I tried to organize this as a walk, with everything listed block by block, but it didn't work.  I can’t be that accurate with regard to placement of every last thing, so it made more sense to take things by category.

MOVIE THEATERS.  Just kill me now.  L.A. was the best place in the world for movie theaters, but Hollywood itself was something even beyond that.  BK had it better, because by the time I got there, road show engagements, and big premieres themselves, were pretty much dead.  But the theaters!  When I think back to the movie palaces I took for granted – the Chinese, Loew’s Paramount, Egyptian, Hollywood Pacific, Pantages, the Cinerama Dome.  The more normal ones like the Hollywood, Vogue, Fox, Holly. Vine, and the Pix.  (I think the other one BK knew was already a Pussycat by the time I got there.)  All within a short walk from the apartment.  Paradise unequalled.  I would list some movies remembered from each one, but we’d be here all night.

To be continued...

RECORD STORES.  Take me back.  Please.  Phil Harris.  Vogue Records.  (I’m pretty sure they had a store there in addition to the one in Westwood.)  That storefront might later have become a Peaches or some such – I know there were one or two on the south side of Hollywood Blvd.

Oh wait, BK says Discount Record Center.  And other little independent stores, one where I was thrilled to find my first bootleg soundtrack LPs:  Marnie and Vertigo.  Both of which someone later borrowed and never returned.  Wallich’s Music City.  Sadly, I recall feeling Wallich's was already a ghost of some magnificent former self by the time I got there.  I might be forgetting other Hollywood record stores, but I'm remembering Phil Harris and Vogue were my main ones.

(This still doesn't feel right.  Am I remember right about Vogue being there?)

Today I went to the local farm and scored some pearl onions, okra, raw honey, and two monarch chrysalises that had fallen. They have milkweed growing because they love the butterflies. I brought them home so they will not get stepped on.

Will they still become butterflies if they aren't attached to the milkweed?  I wasn't sure if they get any nourishment from the milk weed while in the chrysalis stage

They do all their eating when they are caterpillars, Cillaliz. They are in some strange state of reforming everything when in the chrysalis. I have all the ones I could find tied and hanging in a zipped up laundry hamper.

MUSIC STORES.  Wallich’s, of course.  But there was a small, serious classical music store on Hollywood Blvd., which might not have lasted too long after I got there because my memories of it are scant.  (I just ran to look at a couple of opera scores I bought there in 1972, hoping to find a name, but it’s not on them.)

One great find at Phil Harris Records was something I hadn’t known existed:  Bernard Herrmann’s “Wuthering Heights” in a British LP box set.  I grabbed it, and the next day I asked at the music store on Hollywood if there was a published score.  I think they actually had it in stock that day, and I grabbed that as well.  Still have both, in beautiful condition, and I treasure those suckers.

This was civilization.

Oy, how could I forget Vogue!  Discount Record Center was on the south side of the street and wasn't around long.  Interestingly, I also got Wuthering Heights at Phil Harris, and years before that's where I purchased my first opera recording, Robert Ward's The Crucible.

BOOK STORES.  The wonderful Pickwick Books, which I think became B. Dalton-Pickwick before it began its own slide into something ordinary.  I’d never lived within walking distance of any bookstore, let alone a decent one, and Pickwick was the greatest treat.

Its upstairs room, kind of a half-floor mezzanine as I recall, was the site of my first earthquake – just a small routine one - but it was a thrill, coming within my first month or so there, and I was so happy at having experienced it.  I told everyone at work about it.  Called the family in Ohio.  I had arrived.

Sadly, I wasn’t into books in any way similar to the way I am now, or the way I’d like to be, so all of those wonderful stores BK can talk about…well, I remember them (Cherokee Books, the little stores on side streets), but I’m afraid they meant little to me then, and well, that just kills me.  (Think of the collection I might have now, if only I’d known…)  Later I began to gain some appreciation for secondhand and out-of-print books, and was happy to discover Book City.

There was Larry Edmunds, of course, and I have some books from 1972 with their stamp in them.  I was dazzled by all of the film stuff, and though I (FOOLISHLY) didn’t acquire as many things as I should have, (and could have!), I treasure the few one-sheets, lobby cards, and 8x10s bought there for a pittance, much of it Hitchcock.  There was also another store – Bennett’s – near the iconic Security Pacific Bank building (first L.A. checking account) at Hollywood and Highland, where I also found a few things.

BK mentioned the Las Palmas newsstand.  Loved those, especially the one on Cahuenga with its indoor sections.  I think all good newsstands are pretty great places, but those L.A. ones were very special, being my first.  Even later in the 80s, anywhere in town I’d drive by one I hadn’t known about, I’d slam on the brakes and get out to browse.

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure.  Glad you are saving them

RESTAURANTS.  Oy!  Where to even begin?  Guess I’ll just start naming ‘em like I did for Beverly Hills.

And that, DRs, will have to be tomorrow, because it’s 1:30 in the AM and I'm seriously wiped after a very long and full day.

Cillaliz, when I give a talk, I say that the caterpillars are children, the chrysalis is the teenager, and the butterfly is the adult. I think they're onto something there.

Don't know if I told you all about this, but I met this minister at the hootnanny I went to a while back.   I later read this story and found out he is a former Disney Channel star.  Who knew?   I've been pretty impressed with some of the things I've heard about him and that he posts on facebook.  I have a friend who goes to his church and they love him.  It's really near my house, so I'm thinking about going and checking it out.

What a neat story!
