Saturday morning greetings!  My 2 roommates have earlier conference commitments than I do, so I'm staying out of their way while they get ready.  I should be on the road back home by noon and will be glad to be able to use my computer again.

Good morning, all! At 6:30, I accidentaly spilled my glass of water all over my night stand and then spent 15 minutes cleaning up the mess. Luckily, no books are damaged, but I did pitch outseveral magazines I won't be reading.

So, that woke me right up, and I dressed, sorted the laundry, and it's in the washers. When that's finished, I will head down to Toyland to see if Con Ed and the Foundation are back on friendly terms. It's my understanding that the mess is worked out, the power turned on, and all is good. So, we'll see.

More coffee.

Congrats to DR ELMORE on his upcoming $$....you earned it!

DR JOHN G - I don't care what the people at See's Candy told you, the chocolate dipping episode was filmed on a sound stage in front of an audience just like ALL episodes of I LOVE LUCY.  The first outside the studio filming ever done were some inserts with doubles of the car during the trip to Hollywood.

http://www.lucyfan.com/ilovelucy39.html

Amanda Milligan who shared the scene with Lucy WAS a real chocolate dipper and may have been employed at See's.  Lucy told the story several times of her talking with Amanda afterwards and asking her how she liked spending time at the studio.  Amanda told that she had never been more bored in her life.  ;D

Good morning, all.

Thanks, JRand. I didn't think it was filmed at See's. But maybe they took the cast there for research before filming on the soundstage.

I did 6 roundtable discussions yesterday (20 minutes each) at the Austin Film Festival.  Met some nice people.

Today, I'm off; will start packing books/DVDs for next week's trip to Burbank and Monsterpalooza.

Tomorrow, I'm back at the Film Festival for a panel discussion.

TOD: I'm not supposed to eat pasta because of my diabetes, but I ignored that rule in Italy this past summer where I had the best lasagna ever. It was about 3/4 of an inch thick, was made up of seven or eight of the thinnest layers of pasta ever and between each layer was a layer of thinly sliced porcini mushroom. Butter was added, and the flavor was so good that I could hardly believe it. Also, it was not a pretty dish, just rustic and well, it almost looked like an omelet. I still dream of that flavor.

Thanks, George, for the Wicked update. I remember Reva on Guiding Light; that was when I was beginning to tune the show out, but still I remember her as being fun to watch.

Also, while I don't like the cast album, I would like to see Wicked someday. I think the visuals and the story would make up for a lot.

Good morning, all.

Driving from the Bank of Bur to the Beach of Redondo this  morning to mosey around where I lived which was at the Harbor of King.  Also need to drop by the Pier of Venice where I just might have one of my old favorite Mexican lunches at the Cantina of Baja which I believe is alive and well.

Back this evening.  VIBES to the lot o' yez whether you need 'em or not!

I should be in L.A. today going to my niece's wedding shower.  I don't feel too guilty considering the expense and hassle we will have to go through to get to her wedding in Cozumel.

It is hard at times living so far from family.  I miss too many gatherings & it makes me feel disconnected.

Topic of the Day:

Favorite pasta dish:  my homemade lasagna.  I just take whatever recipe is on the box of noodles and double everything except the noodles.

Otherwise, I really like cheese-filled ravioli or tortellini with a red sauce...meat or not.  Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken can be very good.

For fun, I went to Google and put in "great donuts - san fernando valley - i immediately got several sites to look at where that question had been asked.  While the answers were varied, there was one constant: K's Donuts.  There wasn't a person who didn't recommend it.  As you know, I've been on the hunt for a great donut place in the Valley.

So, first I went to Fast Frame to have my Reginald Marsh watercolor framed, and from there I went directly to K's, which was only moments away at Ventura and Beverly Glen in a little strip mall that also houses what is apparently the best foot massage place in the Valley.  Well, they were right.  I got an apple fritter and, more amazingly, a donut filled with whipped cream with chocolate on the top.  There is no other donut place in the Valley that has whipped cream inside a donut, and that is one of my favorite things.

I brought them home and they were GREAT.

And then, since I was sated with donuts (I'd only had bacon and eggs at nine-thirty) I decided to watch something called The Hunger Games.  I know the books are wildly popular, but I hope they're better than this film is so far.  There's not one original thing in this movie - is there in the books?  Not like we haven't had this kind of story many times.

I have (sort of) paid my bills this afternoon.  My Social Security check is supposed to be posted on the fourth Wednesday of the month.  However, my credit union always makes the funds available on that Monday before the fourth Wednesday.  But if I posted all my payments to go out on Monday, chances are somehting would get screwed up and I would be in trouble.  So, I have put all of the bill payments to go out on Tuesday, so if something does go wrong I can still stop them from processing.

There were several donut shops in the 1970s that had donuts filled with whipped cream, but they disappeared and its been over two decades since I've had one.  It was GREAT.  I will now have to be VERY careful about not overdoing it. :)

Couldn't you alter your running route so that you end up there on the final stretch of your run?

Well, that would be a VERY healthy run of about a three-and-a half mile jog, maybe a bit more.  And then there's the matter of getting home.

You like whip cream in donuts, I'm shocked ;)

And then, since I was sated with donuts (I'd only had bacon and eggs at nine-thirty) I decided to watch something called The Hunger Games.  I know the books are wildly popular, but I hope they're better than this film is so far.  There's not one original thing in this movie - is there in the books?  Not like we haven't had this kind of story many times.

I enjoyed the movie.

I did something I haven't done in a 'coon's age.  I decided to eat dinner tonight, despite having donuts and bacon and eggs earlier.  Tomorrow I begin two solid weeks of under 1200 calories and jogging.  That should get me to drop between six to eight pounds and boy I want to drop them.  I went to Gelson's and got a pound of the leanest ground beef.  I got taco shells, lettuce, tomatoes, and an onion and some low-cal, low-fat grated cheddar cheese.  I made half the meat, and had three tacos in shells and it was great.  Not too horrifying calorically, either - the worst of it is 400 calories for the meat.

It's the southeast corner of Ventura and Beverly Glen in a little strip mall - the donut place is right near the Beverly Glen side - K's Donuts.  Well worth the drive.

Went to a new gastropub tonight. The food was very good. Lots of stuff I shouldn't have had, like beer and house-made potato chips and pizza. But it was noisy and there were too many TV sets and, well,  I felt really old. So, while I would recommend the place, I don't harbor any great need to ever go back there.
Title: Re: HIP

Then went to a wine bar that was fairly empty because the UT game was on tonight (that's a Texas team, I think). It wasn't busy, but at least my friend Cecil and I had a chance to catch up, which we haven't had the time to do lately. His wife is out of town on a business meeting.

The wines were nice, but not spectacular. I think we drink better when we're at one another's house. So, does that make me completely anti-social?

Or maybe I just want cocktails when I drink out?  :)
