And the word of the day is: AGAPE!
Thank you for the prayers and thoughts for Ruby. I typed out a long thing about her and deleted it. It was too long.
Ruby is from my church. I haven't heard anything more about the neighbor.
We watched Born to Dance last nice. It was a lot of fun but I enjoyed Broadway Melody of 1940 more. It's not great, but it is fun. And Paulette Goddard is drop-dead gorgeous.
We also have another EP movie to watch, Lady be Good, and an obscure Fred Astaire from 1940 called
Second Chorus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Chorus)
Never heard of it, let alone seen it. It will be a fun addition to our weekend.
This is the same Thanksgiving story that I post every year, but I can't think of anything to top it. This is how it appears in my memoir:
This is my Thanksgiving story, a tale that my family will never let me forget.
I love Thanksgiving. I have very warm childhood memories of that
holiday. Every year, we would have a family gathering at our home. My
aunt, uncle and two cousins, as well as my half-brother Hersh and his
family were always there.
We’d sit around the table and, after everybody had stuffed themselves,
people would tell jokes. My uncle, Kenneth, was the #1 storyteller,
but on this particular year, I also decided to contribute to the
merriment…with disastrous results.
I think it was 1954. I would have been thirteen-years-old.
Without contemplating the consequences, I told this very funny
joke that I’d heard at school, and I told it very well.
Correction! I didn’t just tell it very well. I told it brilliantly. I had a
captive audience.
Then, I came to the punch line…which ended with the word “f**k”.
My mother, who’d had a few too many drinks in her, started laughing
hysterically. No matter what else you say about her, she was a wonderful
audience.
Unfortunately, everybody else at the table sat in a stunned silence. If
my mother hadn’t been laughing, you could have heard a pin drop.
You see, in 1954, a thirteen-year-old boy did not say “f**k”... particularly in front of adults.
The first one to speak was my father. Pointing at me, he started
shouting at my mother, “You’re the one who encourages him! This is all
your doing!”
Within two minutes, all of our very embarrassed guests had excused
themselves and left our house.
I don’t recall if I was sent to my room or not, but I know I never
told another joke at Thanksgiving dinner.

Didja hear Matt Lauer introduce the Gershwin song as "Ess Wonderful"?
Went to dinner with a dozen friends. Most of us have been going out on Thanksgiving Eve for a dozen years or so, and it was just a beautiful evening of fine talk, fine food and fine wines.
It was a yet another reminder of how much I have to be thankful for.
That's exactly what I thought when I read that!!
You don't? Why not? I would think he would love it.
Thank you for the prayers and thoughts for Ruby. I typed out a long thing about her and deleted it. It was too long.
Ruby is from my church. I haven't heard anything more about the neighbor.
DR Laura, I lost Ruby in my ramblings. I wish her well.
I have no special Thanksgiving memories. All Thanksgivings during my childhood were fraught with stress (much like Christmas meals). As a result, I've made every effort to excise stress from my holidays.
I was the youngest of all the relatives so when I was growing up, there really wasn't anyone to play with at family gatherings, so i went to the kitchen and offered to help. As a result I learned how to cook all the family dishes and when I think of holidays I think of cooking and really do enjoy doing it. Except when the family gets together and I'm the only one cooking.
I'm up, I'm up. I slept till ten-thirty, but it took a really long time to fall asleep and then I was up two or three times during the night. But I'm being lazy and it looks like a nice day outside.
Today I am thankful for the fact that BK will not yell at us, even though we are barely on Page 3 by noon on the West Coast. ::)
A few years ago I went out to be with my sister as she recovered from cancer surgery. We didn't bother with "Thanksgiving." We didn't know what the future was going to bring. I think her tenant cooked chicken drumsticks in the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie Oven ™. We watched the Black Friday festivities on television the following day.
All of her tests since have come back cancer-free, for which I am very thankful.
Wow! Forty-nine years ago this day, do you remember where you were?
I opted to stay home today. I was thinking about some Indian food for dinner, but that could change to pasta. As you can see, I don't feel tied to traditional fare. I was never a fan of turkey or gravy or pumpkin pie--and I never ever liked stuffing--so I really would prefer some veggies and a light meal.

I guess I'm warming up for the memoirs!
Happy Thanksgiving, Jane and Jack!
And then I left-sorry and thank you. :)
I was home, waiting for mom's turkey dinner to be done, TCB.
I need to start working on my wet bread casserole (as my sister would call it), but I have time.
Last evening, I got an e-mail (actually got it twice) from this young lady currently living in California. She filled all of us in on how life was going for her, and she broke the news that she would be home in the Northwest for six days, starting on the 27th. That is really terrific, except I haven't the slightest idea who she is!

Are you going to your sister's today?

That explains why you enjoy cooking on the holidays even just for yourself. I'm sure I watched when my mother cooked but she preferred to do it herself than take the time to watch me learn. My parents traveled a lot and as I got older I would cook when they were away. :)

I didn't think so until you mentioned her :)

My mom never really showed me how to do it, I just sat and watched. I learned if I was really quiet they wouldn't kick me out of the kitchen. Of course it wasn't long before she'd say "Here, you stir the gravy" or "If you're going to be in the kitchen then peel the potatoes" So i slowly learned.

I helped in the kitchen many times but not so much on Thanksgiving. I remember Sunday mornings I made the coffee in the old glass/pyrex coffee maker. I think because I had the patience to stand there until it was the correct color. I offered to make the mashed potatoes so I could put extra butter & milk in them.
Happy Thanksgiving, Elmore!
Or in case you want to stay later than they do, MR BK.
Wow! Forty-nine years ago this day, do you remember where you were?
I was two. I imagine I was at home
I've shaved and am about to shower, and then at three I'll go put some gas in the motor car and head over to Barry Pearl's - from there we go to the home of Lloyd Cooper for dinner. I'm thinking about following Barry and co. in case I want to leave earlier than they do.
I talked to my brother Randy and my sister-in-law Jo about the family gathering and then I went to Cafe 82 for their Thanksgiving special, which was quite good: salad, turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, broccoli, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. I feel quite sated and quite happy.
Or in case you want to stay later than they do, MR BK.
Like that's gonna happen!
I was home, waiting for mom's turkey dinner to be done, TCB.
I hope not. Thanksgiving was still six days away.

I was too little to know the difference.
Sigh. That was good. I just started the soup.
I just saw today's parade presentation of "Cinderella" on Broadwayworld. what the hell is that ugly schmatta Victoria Clark is wearing for a costume? She looks like Marie Antoinette got hit by a steam roller on her way to Versailles. There are ugly costumes and then there are ugly costumes!

Well, at least you can't accuse her of making the gown, as well as wearing it!
DR's TCB & elmore I'm sorry to have interrupted your conversation ;)
I don't think we will be shopping at Trader Joe's in the near future. Keith actually dumped the yogurt he purchased because it tasted so bad. The veggie "turkey" roll with stuffing advertised as tasty was tasteless and the gravy was disgusting. AND there was as much gravy as there was turkey roll. ;D

Boy, that turkey (boneless roast) was the easiest main dish I have ever made. Per Butterball. I laid it in my crock pot, added a half cup of water, and then cooked on low for seven and a half hours. Done!
Do you have leftovers so you don't have to cook for awhile?
Now I wish I had made my pumpkin dessert, but I knew that if I did, I would eat it all.
Do you have leftovers so you don't have to cook for awhile?
I have plenty of turkey left.

Yes, except it has more salt than a regular turkey would have had.

Yes it still tasted better than tofurkey ;)

If we were in L.A. I'm sure we would have lots of invites, at least I hope so. We are happy to stay home instead of dealing with the hassles of getting there.

Tofurkey is one reason I am not vegan. Tofurkey and tofu in general.

I didn't have any invitations, so I didn't have to decide amongst them.
TCB, re crackberry, when the Blackberry first came out it was a huge hit and became the phone to have, to the point that many people became obsessed with their Blackberry phones (much like today when people can't seem to live without their iphone or other electronic devices). People started referring to Blackberry phones as Crackberry.
Well, guess I forgot to log out before our guests started arriving shortly after noon. My Mom and my sister's family came early to watch the Detroit Lions' traditional Thanksgiving Day game. Rob and Mary Linda and her parents and grandmothers arrived about 3 and our sister-in-law and DN/G Lauren and her boyfriend arrived just in time to eat about 4:15. The turkey & stuffing turned out great and the sides that everyone else provided were fabulous - dumplings, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn pudding, hot veggie slaw (carrots, parsnips, zucchini), cranberry relish, and rolls. There were 4 pies for dessert - pumpkin, cherry, caramel apple, and pecan. The last of the guests left just before 9 and I've been puttering with dishes and leftovers and now I've quit for the night.
Do you have leftovers so you don't have to cook for awhile?
I have plenty of turkey left.

Yes, except it has more salt than a regular turkey would have had.
Not good. I don't like too much salt, which the veggies had tonight. They were fine for Keith-lol
My stuffing (with the sage sausage, etc.) (sorry, DRs Laura et al.!) was a hit.
And so was "THIS CHRISTMAS"!
Sandy made me gluten-free stuffing.

It may not seem very salty to most people. I never cook with salt anymore, and I never add salt, even if something needs it; so I may notice it more than other people.

Sandy must love you VERY VERY much.
Tonight I had the best phone call imaginable!! It was from my former cat sitter Sharon!!!! She's still in the hospital and will have her 9th surgery on Tuesday, but she's getting better. She's learning to walk again and learning to put her clothes on. She still has a very long road ahead of her, but said she's determined to get better and to someday return to pet sitting....just no time soon. I'm very excited to go visit her at the hospital tomorrow afternoon. What a great story. Another instance that reminds us of how much we all have to be thankful for.

My mom never cooked with salt, so I'm pretty sensitive to it. I rarely cook with it, well I use a little, but not too much
I still used canned stuff and occasionally mixes, but I can tell if I get too much salt, my hands swell a little

Me: "Darn it."
DR Sandra: "What?"
Me: "I melted a plastic lid on the stove while cooking the giblets."
DR Sandra: "Do you want me to bury it?"
Me: "Yes, please. Thanks."
