Title: BASKING IN THE GLOW
Post by: bk on December 09, 2012, 12:09:13 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes basked in the glow, and now it is time for you to post until the basking and glowing cows come home.

Good morning, all.

Happy new week vibes.

Got a book signing this morning at a farmers market. We sold quite a lot there last time, close to two cases. We're hoping for a repeat. If not, it's still a warm morning, though a bit of rain is in the forecast.

DR JRand62, I mentioned getting your envelope several days ago! I was quite thrilled. I did not thank you in that post because I had not yet opened it.

It's exactly what I wanted. Thank you!

Good morning, all!  Another bad night of sleep. I'm blaming it on the fiscal cliff, a term I am getting tired of hearing.

Yesterday had interesting moments, including an email reconnecting me with a friend I'd lost contact with and an unexpected email of a pacific nature from the wife of the best friend I'd lost this year. I did finish entering the recording libretto of DEARST ENEMY, so that's ready to go to New World. That took up most of my day.

Today I'm seeing the afternoon performance of Massenet's opera THAÏS at Manhattan School of Music, and I look forward to it. Before I go, I will spend a bit of time with my Christmas lists.  I would like to get everything into the mail on Saturday morning.

That's ridiculous.  What did she have on it? Fresh lox and gold dust?

It all depends what's on it. A bagel with cream cheese is generally around $2.00

Sunday afternoon greetings!  We are back from a rainy, foggy drive to and from Lima.  Today it was my turn to provide refreshments, so I used some Pepperidge Farm coupons that were sent to me as a result of a customer service call about a defective product.  We had lemon cake, coconut cake, and assorted holiday cookies.  Also grapes and a mixture of unsalted roasted cashews and almonds.

Well, DR Jane, it takes a little will power.  I had just some grapes and nuts and 2 small cookies.  No cake, except for what I scraped off the serving plate as I was cleaning up.

I'm sorry, DR JRand62.  If I'd known, I would have sent you an email to thank you.

I am home from the opera and the market. I'll cook tomorrow.

The opera production was quite wonderful with an excellent student cast. The orchestra played beautifully, and I had a fantastic time. I sat next to an acquaintance I find quite peculiar and don't care much for.  I did see my longtime friend Charles whom I don't get to see often enough and John Graziano, a wonderful gentleman.

Was up at 4am to get to the swap shop in Lake Worth. When we got there at 5:30 the spaces were sold out and we were on standby, We waiting an hour and we left and drove down to Fort Lauderdale which has another Swap Shop and much bigger. We got a space and set up shop.
It was interest what would sell and what wouldn't. Then the rains came and we quickly packed up and left. The next time We will bring a tarp to cover the items in case it rains.

I put out over 18 years of collecting DVDs (and some blu rays). I ending up making quite a bit of money that will go to bills. Amazing what people sell and what people will buy.

Amazon.ca started selling ebooks this week. They still don't sell kindles.

I'm not sure why it took them this long. But the bad part is that if you want to buy ebooks from them you have to switch your kindle from .com. And then you can't buy books from .com again.

I really really wish that there was a way to be able to buy books from both .com and .ca. I emailed the kindle people at .ca. I'm not sure if they considered that people might not want to switch if they can no longer buy ebooks from .com  (they give you the option of keeping your kindle with .com which is what i did).

DR JOHN G, you've had a lot of book signings! Glad it's going so well. Glad to see that some people still buy books.
Well, today didn't go quite as well as last time. We sold about 14 books total in four hours, but the whole turnout for the market was light. Someone said it was because everyone was out Christmas shopping, which I guess meant some place other than a farmers market. Still, we enjoyed talking with people and listening to what they had to say.

I went from the market to a cookie exchange, which was being held by a friend of mine from census bureau days. She had her book for me to sign. When others saw it, I ended up selling an additional seven copies in 20 minutes. Go figure.

It was 82 during the signing and we were sitting outside in a calming breeze, enjoying the day.

Tonight, it's supposed dropped to 30, so I had to harvest all the fruit, ripe or not, and cover the plants. I think the eggplant is a goner, but I was able to drag some into the house, such as a pepper plant with 9 bell peppers on it in various stages of growth and the basil plant.

I think the impending weather change could have been what caused the headache.

Go figure.

:)

Wishes your headache doesn't last long.

DR KevinH, I'm glad we didn't agree to meet tonight for the show. I've had the worst headache since getting up this morning. Sinus pressure, for sure, and nausea. It made keeping my head up a pain.

It also made being nice to everyone a bit of a chore. I think listening to the show tonight would be agony, as much as I would like to see it.

I went to Build A Bear today with my nieces. It is only open for another 3 weeks. But there is still lots of stuff. My sister had a bunch of coupons. And everything is 25% off.

My 3 year old niece wanted to carry the bag (that you put the stuff you are going to buy in). We didn't realize that she was dumping stuff she wanted in it. :)

Did you let her get everything she put into the bag?

No. But she did end up getting this cute little purple Hello Kitty baby that she wanted. Her daddy said she could have it!

:(

I can see where that would be annoying for you.  I was very disappointed when Keith downloaded the Barnes & Noble app onto his iPad and couldn't purchase from them.  I hope that changes if sometime in the future I switch to an updated iPad Mini.

Why can't he buy from them?

Don't know, guess iPad doesn't want him to use the competition.  He can read books we purchase from B & N, just not buy them directly to the iPad.  Like my library app on my Nook, the quality of reading them isn't as good and you can't "turn" the pages like a regular book.

Congrats on the sales, Mike!

Finished with Skyfall, which is indeed close to two hours and twenty minutes.  Reading comments on the imdb is fascinating - the alternate between one star and ten stars - literally every other comment.  I do like the little twerps who talk all about how it's not really a Bond film when they cite the Craig version of Casino Royale as a perfect Bond film.  Casino Royale may be many things, none of which were to my liking, but a classic Bond film?  No.  So, for me Skyfall is a curio because clearly they are attempting to bring some fun back into it and that part succeeded.  Finally some Bondian quips.  In the best moment of the film, Bond's Aston Martin makes an appearance, along with the Bond theme.  The villain is actually colorful.  The plot?  Standard.  The direction?  For this kind of film, very good - no shaky cam - not one shot.  I'd nominate Sam Mendes for best director for that alone.  Yes, it's too much an action picture.  People seem to think that's what Bond has always been about, but a simple viewing of any of the Connery films will tell you otherwise, especially the first three.  Yes, there are always one or two sequences, but they were never relentless like the later films and especially like the redo of Casino Royale, which I find dreary and dank and unappealing.
