Good morning, all!

First thing this morning, a trip to the bank. I gambled on a check from the Man From Philadelphia or the composer's daughter arriving by now and lost big time. So, I am overdrawn. And very angry that both these schmoes haven't paid me yet. This doesn't bode well for a good day today.  At this moment I am very pissed.

So, I'm off to Toyland, although I don't know how much positive work I'll accomplish since I am in a very negative mood at the momen.

This is a hilariously profane "sad off" between Anne Hathaway and Samuel Jackson about who has the more depressing Christmas movie.

Today is bright, sunny, not too cold, and there's no winter precip in sight (yay!!!).

Most important of all, this is my last day of Christmas Hell 2012.  Last concert is tonight.  This little gig has been fun, but the commute and the excessive (in my opinion) number of events (making me miss things like the East Coast Singer) have been a pain in the royal arse.

But I'm finding it fun working with high school kids.  Some of them, anyway.  :)

Hey, this TALE OF CINDERELLA is great!   :)

Listened to the CD in the car last night.  It's very nicely produced, and I found myself totally enjoying the story from the music and bits of dialogue.  Now I'm all the more interested in watching the DVD, something that can't happen today, but it certainly will within the next few days.

Oh, and did I mention it is nicely orchestrated?
Thank you, DR ELMORE.

One of the writers was George David Weiss, who became wealthy as a writer of  "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "What a Wonderful World," and Elvis' "Can't Help Falling In Love with You." He was in his 70s in 1994, and very kind to me, although I'm aware he had a short fuse and could be a bit of a cantankerous bulldog. He also had the ability to be childlike and charming. I liked him very much. I did another show with him around 2000, before Alzheimers finished him off.

I thought the score had some lovely numbers and maybe too many short snippets that were not too good.  The actress playing the stepmother was a nice lady but she couldn't find a pitch and instead of cutting her numbers, they reassigned them to others, and maybe they should have just cut them and dealt with them in dialogue. It also needed a dramaturg to shape the show and force the cutting of a couple of numbers that were lovely but not necessarily good for the piece.  Given those reservations, I think it had some really lovely staging moments and some magic. I was very happy with my work.

I enjoy a few of the numbers that Weiss also wrote for "First Impressions," a not-quite-fully-realized musical of "Pride & Prejudice."

I keep wanting to like the show, but it's such a high octane camp of Austen, and no one in the cast sounds remotely like their literary counterparts. I do like the dance music and orchestrations,

Yesterday's TOD:

I hadn't answered yet because it actually required some thought on my part.  In the past I would have said I like "fantasy" as much as anything, but upon thinking it over last night and this morning, and running my eye over my movie collection and some books, I realized that this category is NOT automatically up there alongside, say, horror and science fiction, as it is with so many people.

The movies I like are the Harryhausen films; KING KONG and certain others of that ilk; THE LOST WORLD; several of the older films based, however loosely, on Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.  But I go for those that are a product of the Hollywood I grew up with, not the ones people are growing up with now.

In another vein, THIEF OF BAGDAD and whatever else there is of that type of film.

There have to be some I'm just not thinking of.  It's difficult, weeding out all the things that are really sci-fi and horror.

I guess I've enjoyed a few modern-day fantasy ideas in films.  A few.  But what are they?  They're just not in the forefront of my mind.

As for Tolkein-derived films?  Okay, up to a point.  The books of THE HOBBIT and the RING trilogy were all the rage in my high school years, and I truly enjoyed reading THE HOBBIT a couple of times.  But I only made it through the first half of FELLOWSHIP before the effort became tiresome, and to this day I've only ever flipped through those books to find a certain passage for one reason or another.  The films are fine, and I'm equally fine having seen them only once or twice.  I'll go to see THE HOBBIT, but I'm not excited about it being merged with other material and padded out to three whole films.

As far as fantasy reading goes, you can give me Jack Finney any old day, for TIME AND AGAIN and much more, including his short stories.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff.

Yesterday's T.O.D.

I am not really a fan of Fantasy.  I barely made it thru part one of LOTR.  I was so bored,  I asked my neighbor to give me a root canal (and he isn't even a dentist), rather than have to watch the rest of it.

I suppose WIZARD OF OZ and TIME AFTER TIME (if that counts).

Nobody at the party considered that a gag gift. I had actually drawn three other gifts -- a battery-operated cocktail shaker, a battery-operated corkscrew and a cube speaker for your iPhone -- and all were stolen from me. So, I was the last person to get a gift, and about five or six people were really wanting the beer koozie. Go know.

Visited my doctor for the first time in a year for my annual cholesterol results which were slightly up on last year but still OK. I also handed him my blood pressure readings which were fine - in fact lower than last year (I do my own home readings).

Your doctor doesn't check your blood pressure in the office?

I am curious in what you think about this interview with Kurt Deutsch. He talks about the cost of producing cast albums. I was wondering if it actually rings true from your experience in producing them

How about this?  I called Fed Ex again - they told me a package was being delivered today.  The lady today told me it would be delivered tomorrow because someone had called in and requested the package be held for an additional day.  I told her that made no sense since the package is coming to ME and I made no such call.  I wouldn't let her off the hook, so she put me on hold and then came back with this whopper - no packages that contain screeners are going anywhere until after Christmas.  Apparently there are bins and bins of them and poor Fed Ex just can't handle it, complained to the "shipper" and the shipper, whose name I now have, told them it would be fine to hold them until after Christmas.  Which means that not only do they hold them until then, it will then take them many days to get them to everyone.  I really wonder if the studios, who spent a LOT of money doing these, knows that their representative in charge of getting them out, just effectively killed some folks chances of getting nominations.  Because some people will now not be able to see them in time to nominate.

Tomorrow morning I will be up early to mail three more Christmas packqes before I head down to Toyland.  Around noon, i will head to Carol Studios for the orchestra reading of the new scores for SUPERMAN that I helped Joshie proofread. It will be a long day.

That is crazy. Fed ex took the orders. How can they not deliver them? And for the person to tell them it would be fine to wait till after Christmas. I hope you put them in their place! Ridiculous.

Gingerbread dough is wrapped and chilling until tomorrow evening.  This weather forecast sounds like then will be a good time for more cocooning, unless the power goes out:

From Channel 7 in Dayton:  Rain arrives in the morning, and some thunder and heavier rain is possible through midday, then steady rain tapers down to showers for the evening commute. That is when winds increase, and gusts in the evening may reach 50 mph. I expect we'll have some power outages. Snow should hold off until later in the evening, but light accumulations are expected overnight as well as more wind. Roads will get slick by morning. More snow showers will continue Friday, then end Friday evening. It will still be windy Friday with wind chills in the morning in the single digits and in the teens in the afternoon.

I got an oversized beer koozie at the recent office gift exchange. Seems rather obscene to me.

OK

Were they supposed to be gag gifts?

Nobody at the party considered that a gag gift. I had actually drawn three other gifts -- a battery-operated cocktail shaker, a battery-operated corkscrew and a cube speaker for your iPhone -- and all were stolen from me. So, I was the last person to get a gift, and about five or six people were really wanting the beer koozie. Go know.

Your party works like my book group book/gift exchange.  Did you offer it in trade?  You can always recycle it at the exchange next year.
It will be recycled.  ;)

I am surprised they didn't mention it as I came home in a foul mood  - gave the Vixter an earful and stormed out to buy a present I didn't want to buy for a person I didn't want to give it to - and I was just in the perfect mood to do that chore

Well, thank YOU!  I am sure I will like it regardless of your attitude.

A recent hire decided we should do a $20 Kris Kringle -- we have never done this here - we older women with families to shop for  and budgets to keep  having always opined that we'd rather not -  this person  basically  haunted us  until we Scrooges all agreed (unwillingly)  to join in --  guess who's name  I picked

To me, that is taking your "work relations" too far.  You already spend more time with your co-worlkers than you do your family; and now they want you to celebrate Christmas with me.  No to office gift exchanges and YES to Christmas parties where you get drunk and tell off your co-workers.

We ended up doing the Costco run tonight, so that's done.  I have an appointment tomorrow at eleven with Teddy, so that will be done.  I called back Fed Ex and told them I was outraged and that I wanted to pick up my package personally - so he said that would be fine and sent an e-mail to the branch.  I will call in the morning before driving there, but hopefully that will work - it's about a fifteen-minute drive.

I was all set to leave the office ON TIME when  literally FIVE minutes before I was about to walk out of the door someone called and explained why thee had to be a  closing TONIGHT  that kept me there for another 2 hours - hence my foul mood

then I returned home and discovered that a couple of things  I had asked to be done  had not been done  and the full wrath of MOTHER fell upon a poor defenseless soul

I watched the second Ayn Rand documentary - also completely amateurishly made, but again some fascinating glimpses of Miss Rand and lots of good info about her philosophy - and the thrust of this particular documentary was all about Atlas Shrugged and how everything she predicted in the book (which takes place "the day after tomorrow") has basically come true.  The book was slammed mercilessly by the critics of the day and yet it sold a huge number of copies, spent months on the best-seller list and over the years has sold over seven million copies.  Since the financial meltdown and that crap bailout stuff, the book has been selling over 200,000 copies a year, pretty impressive for a book written in 1957 that was hated by all the critics.  It's taught in schools now, too.  The nice thing about history is that all those critics' reviews are available to read and all those critics, at least while they were alive, got to see how the public took to the book.

If they wanted me to spend Christmas with you I would be OK with that (LOL) check your quote!)

- I just resent having to spend  week's lunch money and take  out the time to shop for a person who frankly couldn't care less if they never saw me again when I could be using that time and money for my friends family or a cause I feel for -  and  I will probably be receiving a gift I don't want or need - if we all agreed to  contribute $20 to a worthy charity I would be OK with that   - and frankly  a big Christmas party where once again  I am forced to take time away from my family-- I don't know I guess I am just old and grumpy and miserable and mean

maybe some ghosts will show up and show me the error of my ways

One thing I think this horrible economy may do is make people more sensitive to the financial stress that so many people are under. I never liked the mandatory purchase of presents.
