Good morning!

Will be leaving for Buffalo this morning, I think.  They're expecting high winds and several inches of snow.  I hope my flight isn't delayed for hours.

Good morning, all.

Safe travel vibes, KevinH and anyone else venturing forth today.

Got a phone interview at 7:30 this morning about the book. I hope it's fun. I'm barely awake.

TOD: A few highlights of what has progressed into being a wonderful year: my week in Italy, getting the book published and landing my new job. Very grateful for a lot of things great and small since starting the year off with three kidney stones that landed me in the hospital but at least alerted the doctors to a tumor on the other kidney.

P.S. to TOD:

On the other hand (that's OTOH for those of you attuned to internet lingo), the year went by rather quickly.  Rather too quickly if I'm to be honest about it.  It's all rather surreal as far as years are concerned.

P.P.S. to TOD:

I stand corrected:  I did have a favorite thing during this past year -- a "former" co-worker and friend was hired to be my new boss!   Things have been going very well at work since he came back.

TOD:

I enjoyed directing THE CURIOUS SAVAGE - I know DR CP thinks the show should never be done again....but I wanted to do it just for the last 30 seconds or so when Mrs. Savage sees her friends as they really think they are....  It was lovely....

AND being in THE CRUCIBLE with all the students from DePauw and Mr and Mrs David Cryer was also most entertaining.

Good morning, all.

Gave a few extra "Oy!s" upon getting out of bed this morning.  Oy!  I really needed one more hour of sleep, but I'm awake now with the first cup of coffee in me.  Fortunately, no obligations today -- I get to stick around home, and I look forward to straightening up the jernt.  I have a wonderful batch of CDs to listen to as I putter about, which will be perfect.  This evening a couple of friends and I bring a happy close to this year's Birthday Week with a little quiet dinner.

Tomorrow, more of the same puttering and straightening which will be equally productive and relaxing, ending the day at a friend's annual holiday gathering of the local community theater gang which is always very enjoyable.

Interview is over. It went quick, but it was really good. The two hosts did most of the talking and they were effusive in their praise of using the book, so I liked that.

Now on to the rest of the day. Two hours of rehearsal this morning for church program tomorrow, then the book signing. I'm going to try to get some baking done this afternoon and a Christmas dance party tonight.

Good morning, all! I had several peculiar dreams last night, but I remember absolutely nothing about them now.  I will shortly head to Toyland to proof some more of ROBERTA. When I get home, I have more tidying up to accomplish.

If I have the energy, I will wrap my gifts for goddaughter Charlotte. I want to drop them off at the apartment on Christmas Eve so she'll have them by the 25th.

2012 has been a mix if good and bad:
Good:
I've seen three recordings released to a lot of positive reviews
I made another trip to Dublin
I'm not aging well, but I'm still kicking
I navigated two office moves in twoof the hottest weeks in July
ChasSmith joined HHW
Bad:
I've lost my best friend  for reasions I'll never know
Several people I care about died
The phone's not ringing with orchestration/arranging work these days
The Packard Humanities Institute project finally died
dealing with a difficult conductor in Dublin
I'm aging badly

The good for me:

I have gotten some interesting cast albums the past few months. How to Succeed... in French, Brazilian cast recordings of They're Playing Our Song, Company, Side by Side by Sondheim, Little Shop of Horrors. Pippin's cast from Australian and South Africa. Gypsy from South Africa and the Australian cast of La Cage Aux Folles with Keith Michelle who I also got in the (almost) complete recording of Man of La Mancha from London. Also from Australia I got another recording of  They're Playing Our Song.

Some Christmas recordings were: A Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, Save The Children: Christmas Carols And Festive Songs (with singers and casts from London and some Broadway shows) Elaine Paige's Christmas album. She was also in the cast album of Billy with Michael Crawford which I also got.

Some oddities were the Broadway cast recording of Chu Chem and the soundtrack of The Fantasticks including the songs that were cut or paired down from the final version including believe it or not Try to Remember the show's signature song.

DR Vixmom, I would email amazon and tell them to forward your message to a supervisor.

Explain how it is completely unacceptable for them to cancel your giftcard order without emailing you. It was obviously a xmas gift and they could easily have substitued the snowflakes.

Then explain how you re-ordered and you still did not get the item. Again tell them this is unacceptable.
Maybe they will compensate you.

As others have said you can email amazon giftcards. Or you can print out the information. But it seems like you want the actual card. I personally would see if you could print out the info for the one that is in transit.

And if you decide you don't need that one i would send it back. Demand that amazon take it back considering it will arrive after you need it.

TOD: Some of the good things were:  [On balance, feels like more rem, ains going forward to 2013 to be hopeful about than I'd thought, even though the latter part of the year especially felt not so good]

-  completing writing a project based on a promise that it would be funded if I had a viable draft by a deadline, bad thing was losing work (and funding for the production of that particular project) as a direct result of the online "cyberfollowing" and its impact

-  Skip's having HERRINGBONE recorded was fun for the whole family, including Toby and Dylan (Skip is waiting for the recording to be finalized, but the event in May was a great success for all)

- a wonderful trip to L.A. in May

-  the continued community here, where no one seems to mind the need to come and go at times, and you all seem understanding when someone misses a few days

-  And a good thing is I've learned for the very first time in half a century what it means to be truly disappointed by some people, which is a good thing to remember for when times get better, that people who are there when things are good may not be there when things are less good, that one needs to be careful who one trusts (The phrase:  "Respect him and suspect him" sadly proves to be the case, maybe more about "her" in these cases.)

- and yes, MOST importantly, the election turning out the way it did.  I was very concerned about that for the rights that might have been curtailed had things turned out differently.  However I may feel about some tax issues like (for example) double taxation, where I have to admit I differ from the president and Warren Buffet but you can't have it all.

On balance, more good things in 2012 than I'd originally thought!  Not one of the better years, though.

TOD - Sandwiched between the 2011 excitement of Rob & Mary Linda's wedding and our trip to France & Germany and the opening of 2013 with our trip to England, 2012 was kind of quiet.  One of my big highlights was being taken off Plavix in August, which indicates my reaching the 2-year survival point from my heart attack.

Lots of little travel experiences this year, but our only major trip was New York and Washington in May.  In addition to getting to visit with DRs Elmore, FJL, and Jose, we saw some great theatre:  HERRINGBONE, HARVEY, and ONCE in NYC and MUSIC MAN and THE TAMING OF THE SHREW in DC.

Greetings from Toyland!

I had meant to mention earlier that I saw the end of Michael Buble's Christmas special last night. That youbng man needs to get some lessons in diction. On my favorite Christmas song, I heard him sing:
Once again as in olden times, happy golden times of yore,
Faithful friends who are dear ta us
Will be near ta us once more.
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow,
Until then we'll hafta muddle through somehow,
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

Pathetic.

We watched KILLER JOE last night.

There are some difficult to watch sequences in this one, but it is one of the most clever and surprising black comedies I've seen in years.  Performances are excellent.

Gina Gershon's first appearance is certainly one for the books.

Also, I join those online who wonder why they left the "Parson Brown" section in WINTER WONDERLAND with Rod Stewart, if Buble was going to look a bit uncomfortable doing it.  They could have just done "circus clown" both times, couldn;t they have?

Blake Shelton's Christmas special was an oddball mixture of goofy comedy and nice music.

It apparently did very well in the ratings the first time around, much better than the Buble show.

Here's the NY Times link on the ratings for Christmas specials.

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/21/on-television-holiday-specials-draw-plenty-of-eyeballs/

From the article:

"Musical specials also performed to expectations: CBS’s “A Home for the Holidays With Rascal Flatts” on Dec. 19 tallied 5 million viewers while NBC’s “Michael Bublé: Home for the Holidays” on Dec. 10 had 5.7 million. But they were both upstaged by “Blake Shelton’s Not So Family Christmas” on NBC which drew 8.9 million on Dec. 3."

But wow, Buble's album being on the charts in the Top ten two years in a row seems to be unusual.

I liked last year's special better somehow.  Maybe they were tougher on the writers last year.

Here's his FELIZ NAVIDAD with Thalia, which I may have posted before, but I like it:

FELIZ NAVIDAD - Michael Buble with Thalia (with cute intro, "Feliz Navidad" actually starts about 1:45)

I'd forgotten until this article that Richard and I didn't know Robin and Bob were planning to move until we heard they'd sold this house.  Just as well, because we would have wanted to buy it and probably couldn't have afforded it.

The picture of little Robbie that's in a frame on my bedside table was taken at a summer gathering on that fabulous front porch.

For those that didn't hear the film version of Les Miz will open on Christmas day to less than stellar reviews.

So if you find it necessary to have the soundtrack AMAZON has it for sale for $5.00 as an mp3 download.

It does have the new song for the film Suddenly, but does not have Do You Hear The People Sing?

DR ChasSmith, ice or slush, both keep us from driving down our driveway.  At least the slush can be removed.  We only use salt when we absolutely have to.

Today it is fairly nice out so we went to the gym & I swam.  It felt great.

Our cruise to Tahiti & the Social Islands with Craig here to take care of Sherlock

Watching Bryan become a doctor was one of the highlights of my life, not just the year.

Craig realizing he needed to get that second Master's degree to become a teacher, and knowing exactly what kind of teacher he wanted to be.  Then working as a teacher's assistant and confirming it.
