A Very Happy Birthday to DR DakotaCelt!! ;D

Good morning, all.
There's an opinion piece in the Washington Post on "Les Miz" and gender stereotypes that you might want to check out: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/why-we-love-les-miserables-despite-its-miserable-gender-stereotypes/2012/12/28/bc8ef17e-4f84-11e2-839d-d54cc6e49b63_story.html?tid=pm_opinions_pop

Good morning, all! I went to bed around midnight and spen tmost of the night trying to get to sleep. That'll teach me to sleep till noon. I a, now heading off to Toyland.
-
Good morning, all.
The neighbor did the plowing last night, but it was still snowing lightly and I have some snowblower cleanup ahead of me. AFTER another cup of coffee.
-
Found that picture of the Van Nuys Coffee Dan's.
Heartbreaking.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday, DR DakotaCelt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have yet to see SOLDIER IN THE RAIN all the way through. The PBS station showed it here a week or two ago and I watched the first few minutes. I've also caught bits of it on TCM or whatever in the past, and was intrigued enough to order it on a Warner Archives disc. But have I watched it? No, but I can tell you the transfer is very weird, and not at all pleasant to sit through -- it's an old video master of some kind, and needs to be done over. Actually, I don't know what I'm talking about here, but someone on HTF explained what the deal was some time ago and that's the general gist of it. General Gist. He's a character in my hilarious new Cold War play that's about to open on Broadway.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DAKOTA CELT, WHO, BY THE WAY, WHERE IN THE HELL ARE YOU? :)
-
Sunday morning greetings! I stayed home from Lima today to take down Christmas decorations. They usually stay up until after Epiphany (Jan. 6), but I wanted to get them put away before we cross the pond.

Happiest of birthdays to DR DakotaCelt!

DR DOUG R - Revenge of the Creature is my favorite.....much better than the original CFTBL......give it a try!
-
I'm cooking roast brisket today. It's something I've hardly ever done because slow cooking never works well for me. We'll see how it turns out! Apart from that I'm in the middle of doing loads of laundry after being away over Christmas.
-
DR DOUG R - Revenge of the Creature is my favorite.....much better than the original CFTBL......give it a try!
Thank you JRand62. I'll try that one!
-
I tried to watch WHAT A WAY TO GO last night. I had only seen it on television, so it was fun to see it in widescreen.....but I gave up about halfway through the Gene Kelly segment....
I also realized that I was confusing it in my mind with a movie titled WOMEN TIMES SEVEN....another Shirley MacLaine movie from the 60's.
-
DR DOUG R - Revenge of the Creature is my favorite.....much better than the original CFTBL......give it a try!
Thank you JRand62. I'll try that one!
It has Clint Eastwood and a mouse and John Agar and John Bromfield.....and Lori Nelson is a doll!

DR JENNIFER the main roads are cleared fairly quickly but the county roads and streets in subdivisions don't get much attention until late in the day.

Well, I read the article on LES MIZ. Has this idiot ever read the novel? Cosette is your typical Victorian heroine: virginal, pretty, bland, blonde, and an objet d'amour for Marius and a hope of redemption for Valjean. She's not as bland as David Copperfield's inane prototype for the Victorian novel, "child bride" Dora, who can't cook, keep house, or think sensibly and who for the benefit of all readers dies very soon after marrying David, but she's still the typical Victorian novel and theatrical heroine. By the 1870s in the theatre at least she'd become a joke, like most of Gilbert & Sullivan's soprano ingenues, of which Rose Maybud is the epitome of the calculating and golddigging, but on the surface sweet and innocent, heroine.
-
BK,
Miracles do occur!
We are in basic agreement on all three movies you saw yesterday.
1. TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE - I liked Eastwood, Adams and the rest of the cast. The film was a pleasant time waster, but no great shakes.
2. ARBITRAGE - Gere and the rest of the cast were fine and I probably enjoyed the film slightly more than you. On the other hand, I think that it could have been a stronger picture without the melodramatic subplot (i.e. the car crash, the Tim Roth character). If I'd been writing the script, I would have concentrated on Gere's financial misdealings. There was plenty of good material there, and if you needed a Roth-like character, he could have been with the IRS or Securities commission, rather than a NY cop.
3. WINTER'S BONE - I, too, thought that this was a thriller, then was very disappointed when it turned out not to be one. And, I'd heard such great word-of-mouth about it.
-
LOL.....it is Sunday after all DR DRUXY.
I have not seen any of the movies mentioned.....
-
I have not seen any of the movies mentioned.....
Worse than that - I've not even heard of any of them!
-
I'm cooking roast brisket today. It's something I've hardly ever done because slow cooking never works well for me. We'll see how it turns out!
I can now report back.
The brisket turned out to be an unmitigated, absolute and total disaster. So tough as to be uneatable. It's a good job I did plenty of vegetables!
-
Oy! That's too bad, DR Doug R. I do love a nice brisket.
-
Not sure I've ever cooked a brisket myself, but the few times I've done slow cooking, I've loved it.
-
Back, from a ridiculous job of snowblowing.
Here's the problem:
The wind is blowing, too. And of course it only blows right down the centerline of the driveway I've just cleared.
-
Just taking a coffee break between undecking the mantle and untrimming the tree. Seem like I just put all this stuff up!
-
And the word of the day is: FASTIGIATE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: I TALK TO THE TREES

Happy Birthday Dakota Celt

I found it strident and actually fairly ignorant of 19th century literature, as you point out, but the fact that so many of the people posting comments would deny her the right to have an opinion is ludicrous.

Over Christmas my 8 year old great nephew was showing me his Angry Birds game on his tablet. I''ve now downloaded the game on my own tablet. Simple...but fun ;D

Having spent 2/3 of my career in higher education, I just laughed - both at the piece and the comments.

All of the ornaments are off the tree, except for the crown on the top. I can't reach it.
-
Have to go out for a few things -- such as bags for the new vacuum cleaner, seeing as how they now see fit to give you one measly little bag with the new machine, and of course I didn't think to pick up a supply when I was there. And gasoline for the snow blower and all that other good stuff. And bananas. Wait. How did that get in there?
-
And a few bags of sand for setting up in buckets at the base of the driveway. I'm a little tardy on that, say what? But as wonderful as the new asphalt is when it comes to cleanup, it really is slick with a little snow on it. I don't want to start its gradual deterioration by putting a bunch of salt on it, but definitely sand, for traction.

I am home from Toyland. It was a waste of my yime.

I could eat Texas BBQ every day of my life.

I, on the other hand, am up. Boy did I sleep and boy did I need to sleep. It's kind of in-between outside - gray, not gray. It's sixty degrees here in the house, so heat is on and heating but it will take an hour to warm up the jernt, therefore I may just go jog.
-
I'm watching a Bell Telephone Hour compilation of Christmas programs. Florence Henderson is the hostess. Her over-the-top diction is amusing me greatly. She sounds like the valedictorian for Miss Julianna's School of Elocution and Dramatic Arts.

But first, 151 e-mails - I'm sure once I nuke the spam there will be about ten.

From DR John G:
Yes. The tour cost $10, but the samples were free. I like the way they do business. They also had a fire pit by the waiting area and had it stocked with all the makings of s'mores. Plus, wine from the nearby wineries and beer from the nearby brewery. All that was free, though there was an honor box.
I think I would have enjoyed this tour.
-
My last load of laundry is in the dryer. Thinking about going to SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK. I considered Life of Pi, but it's gone already. That's fine, I wasn't that excited about seeing it and I really don't like wearing 3D glasses.
-
From DR TCB:
When they signaled the stingrays, there had to be, at least, 30 of them show up. They gave us treats and we were allowed to let them eat off of our hands. I literally got a "hickey" on the palm of my hand from the suction.
Where was this and how many people? We were a small group of about 10 and the one sting ray was very attentive to all of us.

I would very much like to see San Antonio and do the River Walk.

-
DR Cilla I didn't see THE BIG YEAR. The reviews were pretty bad. Do you think we should watch it?
-
The good news is that we are doing very well for the Kritzerland show a week ahead of time, which is a relief. The less than good news is, although I don't REALLY care, is that there's no way for us to win that B'way World popularity contest award as the Titanic one-nighter has too many people involved in both the show itself and the membership of the company that did it - no way to fight that and that's all this is about - how many people you know who will vote and tell their friends. We had a cast of nine for our show - they close to thirty - and we have no membership group of heaven knows how many. It would have been nice to use it in our ads, and I do thank everyone for voting, but there's no real way to catch them now. Every time we go up a percent or two, they send in thirty people to get them back where they were. The only thing that will change anything is if they voted multiple times from the same computer - those votes will all go away.
-
From DR TCB:
It really angers me that the family of one of the children who survived Sandy Hook is suing for 100 million dollars. The child was naturally affected by the shooting, but one hundred million??
I was very upset to see about the lawsuit without knowing the astronomical amount. What did they expect the school to do, and teachers gave their lives trying to protect children.
What of the consequences if they win?

The writing is pedantic, but the ugly nature of the comments is such that it makes me think she struck a nerve with her observations.
I found her comments interesting and I found myself agreeing yet disagreeing with her observations. Yes, the images do harken to perceived stereotypes, yet the story takes place in the 1800s France, when women were still looked down upon. Also, the movie and the musical also take into consideration small slices of the larger story. I have read the book and found it to be fascinating. My background is media studies so I am curious on portrayals and how the support or challenge perceived stereotypes.
Two other books have also been dramatized on screen and they are Manon des Sources and Jean de Florette. These two books address class, social structure and perceived stereotypes based on gender and social class.Jean de Florette is an excellent book but a bit long in the tooth in spots. I often wonder if the storytelling is as cumbersome in spots in the original French text or of if it is the way is was translated from French to English. REturn of Martin Guyere is a curious movie.
During the 1990s, the local PBS channel used to show foreign films late nights on Friday or Saturday as a way to make foreign films more readily available to the prairie region. Over the years I have seen the following films: My life as a dog; Fanny and Alexander; The REturn of Martin Guyerre; Manons des Sources; Unter Solen; Un Mauve Taxi; Au Revoir, Les Enfants; Emigrante (Swedish film based on Moberg's book); and many more that I can not think of. Ironically, after seeing some of the films, I read the books they were based on.

Hi DR Dakota. Are you enjoying your special day?
-
I did get a PT job but it is only for a few hours a week. It is better than nothing. It is working in a safe home for troubled youth. I work mostly overnights and do the cleaning and stuff. I don't mind. I am a bit of a night owl. I have been fighing a vicious cold I cannot seem to shake.
I have also been in contact with some new found cousins. Jobhunting continues.

Greetings and vibes to one and all!

Hi DR Dakota. Are you enjoying your special day?
Yes, relaxing and going out for supper in a bit. A local mexican restaurant gives free meals on your birthday. Not sure what I will have. I am hungry for a burrito and I do like their chicken burritos. Think I will have a margarita to go along with it, strawberry, as a treat to myself.

Thank you George!

I went to Build A Bear today with my nieces. It closes tomorrow. :(
Everything that was left was 50% off.
My mom had gone yesterday and got them each a bear they wanted (which she will give them for Valentine's Day).
So today they were using their Christmas money to get some clothes.
And they just called and dressed some of the bears in their haul. So cute!

Looks like tomorrow I'll finally get to meet the 5 Somali kids I helped bring over from Kenya (living with an Uncle) to be reunited with their dad. It's the second or third time we've talked about getting together, but we've planned for tomorrow afternoon at an ice cream shop in their home town.

Job vibes for the Birthday girl.

Thanks DR JENNIFER I just got that LM!!!

And everything is in the house......the move for Molly & Austin to the house here in Mooresville is completed.....not unpacked....but everything is moved!

I was wondering the same thing. I suspects she does not understand the Victorian era literature and Post French Revolution literature and both have very different mind sets and trajectories. Also social mores and local historical events will have an influence on how stories are written and presented. God forbid if the writer commented on a Richard Sheridan Brinsley play.

Elmore, I doubt she is familiar with the nuances of French or Victorian literature. I am no expert either but I do realize that historical time periods, stations in life, and perceived attitudes of the time will show how a story is told by writers of the day. I am sure she would find fault with Adam Bede but I find the book fascinating as a woman. I love Les Miz... She would definitely have an issue with Pagnol's work.

Having spent 2/3 of my career in higher education, I just laughed - both at the piece and the comments.
I shook my head and I worked in a library. Good grief, sometimes PC goes just a little too far. Yes, I am a feminist but I also can take a step back and see things through a historical and cultural lens.
AS a person who studied media, that is always a danger of making assertions of a show or movie that was done in the 40s or 50s. I try to be conscious of presenting the ideas of the program of that day, yet trying to balance it with the mores and perceptions of the present-day. As an educator, she has failed in that capacity and is allowing her own bias to cloud her essay.

Hello, everyone.

THE HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS
to
DR DAKOTA CELT!!
-
May you have a lovely birthday!
-
Dakota, I hope you discover a few new possibilities at your current job and can then leap to a better one.
-
Not much news here. Doing laundry.
-
Bruce, there's a FRENCH film you might enjoy, called THE HEDGEHOG. Of course, it's FRENCH.
-
Laundry beckons.
TTFN.

Funny, I do not think of Dora as the heroine in David Copperfield.
She isn't but she's the epitome of the Victorian helpless woman

This ebook (kindle) of LES MISERABLES is free today (not sure if it's free every day but it was in my newsletter of free ebooks for today):
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GHNIRK/?tag=afbmf-20
Just ordered it... It will be nice to have that when I am done cleaning at work and have to sit on my turn and monitor.
Work? Did I miss something? You got a job? This is great, I hope!
-
Bruce, there's a FRENCH film you might enjoy, called THE HEDGEHOG. Of course, it's FRENCH.
I read the book and didn't know a film had been made.
-
I did get a PT job but it is only for a few hours a week.
Yep! I completely missed this.
-
DR Elmore, how are those Bell Telephone Hour specials? I just got that DVD and haven't watched it yet.

I suppose so. Today spoiled, not to bright, rich young women have their own reality shows ;)

DR Elmore, how are those Bell Telephone Hour specials? I just got that DVD and haven't watched it yet.
Quite wonderful, actually, like a time capsule of another time. There are wonderful moments, some nice orchestration, usually very fine singing, and Florence's overripe diction. I did wonder if the kids she sings "Awat In A Manger" to might be the current crop of kids in SOUND OF MUSIC with her on Broadway. Some of the costuming is very strange. I did love seeing the Buffalo Bills, Lisa della Casa, and Giorgio Tozzi. It was a lot of fun.

Oh good. Glad to hear that. I'll have it playing tomorrow.

I would very much like to see San Antonio and do the River Walk.
Come to Austin. I'll show it to you. I'm only 1 hour away.
-
I would like that DR Druxy.

Your cold war play? Not to be confused with THE SINGING SAILOR IN THE RAIN, written by Vixmom and TCB.
-
So, when do you arrive?
-
Sunday morning greetings! I stayed home from Lima today to take down Christmas decorations. They usually stay up until after Epiphany (Jan. 6), but I wanted to get them put away before we cross the pond.
Epiphany is a character in that new movie that I believe opened on Christmas Day (but I don't know the name of it).
-
So, when do you arrive?
Sigh. I have so many places I want to go. Having to go to Cozumel next year put a crimp in our travel plans.
-
I tried to watch WHAT A WAY TO GO last night.
Oh, I saw WHAT A WAY TO GO in a theater. It scarred me for life.
-
Happy Birthday, DakotaCelt!
-
A busy day today.
First church, where I heard the most distressing news. Two of our little ones (sisters) have whooping cough. The older one is under two years old and the younger one is only two months old -- and she was a month premature. So those of you who are of a mind to, please pray for them both.
Then we saw a show at the local theater. When we came out, it had rained a little.

! ! ! ! ! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR DAKOTA CELT. ! ! ! ! !

I'm watching a Bell Telephone Hour compilation of Christmas programs. Florence Henderson is the hostess. Her over-the-top diction is amusing me greatly. She sounds like the valedictorian for Miss Julianna's School of Elocution and Dramatic Arts.
I watched this last year on DVD. Visually, it's a sumptuous program and the music is wonderful, too. But there's something that's strident and relentless in the way the segments are presented that makes watching it a bit of a chore. I used it this year as background music while wrapping gifts.

Very scary.
MEGA VIBES THEY WILL BOTH BE FINE!!!!

I nagged, yes nagged, Craig until he got his booster tetanus shot which also included whopping cough. I hated the idea of him working with children that had not been vaccination for whooping cough.

It was at Grand Cayman. North Sound has a coral reef that surrounds it, so sharks don't often come in to the Sound. Part of the Sound is called Stingray City (which gives you an idea of how many there are in the area). We had around 25 people onboard our boat, and after we had called the stingrays over to us; another two or three tour boats arrived.

Their home town?? You have to go all the way to Somalia, just to get some ice cream?
-
Happiest of birthdays to DR DakotaCelt!
Thank you Ginny.... I am hoping someday Greater's ice cream makes it to the plains... Hungry for Turtle ice cream...
You could buy a turtle and make your own.

Thank you TCB...
I have had you in my thoughts and I hope they are going well for you.
Thank you, Dakota. I have been praying for you getting a job (and I haven't been praying part-time). I have started driving again, after a year away from it; so I think that is a positive thing.
-
Thank you. This is very scary. We have two other babies who are not fully immunized. They are up to date for their ages but are not fully immune yet. And they were all together last week in the nursery.
-
I had the tetanus/whooping cough/diphtheria shot a couple years ago when I was doing all that traveling to California during their big outbreak. I didn't want to bring it back home with me unknowingly.

Bruce, there's a FRENCH film you might enjoy, called THE HEDGEHOG. Of course, it's FRENCH.

I like to keep up on the tetanus vaccination because you might not be able to get one after exposure to it. I didn't even know it included extra protection until I called about to find out the cost of it when Craig was due for his booster.

I read that Hillary Clinton is in the hospital with a blood clot from the fall & concussion she had a couple of weeks ago.

Bruce, there are other copies at Amazon. I could be wrong, but I think all are in French with English subtitles. The cover art is different and the title is in French, but would there be any other difference?
-
When I had my car accident they gave me a tetnus booster with the pertussis (sp?) vaccine. They told me there is a lot of whooping cough (pertussis) going around now in adults and children...but it's a lot worse in children. It's also very contagious, so if would be a good idea to encourage athe others to get a vaccine
Prayers and vibes to the little ones in your church.

Before Bryan could attend medical school he had to do titer testing for almost everything, vaccination records weren't acceptable. I wish they were that strict for teachers but I suppose if they can't force the students to get vaccinated they can't force the staff.

Jane, I'd be more than happy to show you around San Antonio, if you come to visit.

Job-hunting vibes for DakotaCelt.
Feel-better vibes for all in need.

Thought I might have a virus on my new laptop, so I took it to my friends to check it out. While there, we watched "Beasts of the Southern Wild" again as well as two movies that were in a film noir set. "Dangerous Crossing" with Jeannie Crane was noir, but "Black Widow" with Ginger Rogers and Van Helfin wasn't, but it was a decent murder mystery. Fun just sitting around and being lazy. Haven't done that in ages.

Over Christmas my 8 year old great nephew was showing me his Angry Birds game on his tablet. I''ve now downloaded the game on my own tablet. Simple...but fun ;D
Doug, it doesn't stay simple. ::)

Finishing off the day with the second half of "Blue Skies." This is really a depressing movie and the pacing is slower than Bing Crosby's crooning.

This ebook (kindle) of LES MISERABLES is free today (not sure if it's free every day but it was in my newsletter of free ebooks for today):

Looks like tomorrow I'll finally get to meet the 5 Somali kids I helped bring over from Kenya (living with an Uncle) to be reunited with their dad. It's the second or third time we've talked about getting together, but we've planned for tomorrow afternoon at an ice cream shop in their home town.
Nice! Have a great time!
