A busy day today.

First church, where I heard the most distressing news. Two of our little ones (sisters) have whooping cough. The older one is under two years old and the younger one is only two months old -- and she was a month premature. So those of you who are of a mind to, please pray for them both.

Then we saw a show at the local theater. When we came out, it had rained a little.

I'm watching a Bell Telephone Hour compilation of Christmas programs. Florence Henderson is the hostess. Her over-the-top diction is amusing me greatly. She sounds like the valedictorian for Miss Julianna's School of Elocution and Dramatic Arts.

I watched this last year on DVD.  Visually, it's a sumptuous program and the music is wonderful, too.  But there's something that's strident and relentless in the way the segments are presented that makes watching it a bit of a chore.  I used it this year as background music while wrapping gifts.

I nagged, yes nagged, Craig until he got his booster tetanus shot which also included whopping cough.  I hated the idea of him working with children that had not been vaccination for whooping cough.

From DR TCB:
Quote
When they signaled the stingrays, there had to be, at least, 30 of them show up.  They gave us treats and we were allowed to let them eat off of our hands.  I literally got a "hickey" on the palm of my hand from the suction.

Where was this and how many people?  We were a small group of about 10 and the one sting ray was very attentive to all of us.

It was at Grand Cayman.  North Sound has a coral reef that surrounds it, so sharks don't often come in to the Sound.  Part of the Sound is called Stingray City (which gives you an idea of how many there are in the area).  We had around 25 people onboard our boat, and after we had called the stingrays over to us; another two or three tour boats arrived.

All of the females came around us and kind of snuggled like cats.  They would turn up their soft underside which felt like velvet.  They were all very sweet (and polite to us newcomers)

I did get a PT job but it is only for a few hours a week. It is better than nothing. It is working in a safe home for troubled youth. I work mostly overnights and do the cleaning and stuff. I don't mind. I am a bit of a night owl. I have been fighing a vicious cold I cannot seem to shake.

I have also been in contact with some new found cousins. Jobhunting continues.

Congrats on getting work even if it is part time, and connecting with new cousins.

FEEL BETTER VIBES!!!

Looks like tomorrow I'll finally get to meet the 5 Somali kids I helped bring over from Kenya (living with an Uncle) to be reunited with their dad.  It's the second or third time we've talked about getting together, but we've planned for tomorrow afternoon at an ice cream shop in their home town.

Their home town??  You have to go all the way to Somalia, just to get some ice cream?

Amazon is out of The Hegdehog - I ordered it, but who knows when they'll get it in - if it's not shipped in a week, I'll get an overseas copy of the DVD from an Ebay seller.

DR DakotaCelt!

Thank you TCB...

I have had you in my thoughts and I hope they are going well for you.

Thank you, Dakota.  I have been praying for you getting a job (and I haven't been praying part-time).  I have started driving again, after a year away from it; so I think that is a positive thing.

Thank you. This is very scary. We have two other babies who are not fully immunized. They are up to date for their ages but are not fully immune yet. And they were all together last week in the nursery.

I had the tetanus/whooping cough/diphtheria shot a couple years ago when I was doing all that traveling to California during their big outbreak. I didn't want to bring it back home with me unknowingly.

Bruce, there's a FRENCH film you might enjoy, called THE HEDGEHOG. Of course, it's FRENCH.

Does it have French actors in the film?  I like French films, except when they use those French actors.

Dakota, I hope you discover a few new possibilities at your current job and can then leap to a better one.

That is what I am hoping... It gives me some "Out there" moments and a little money. time will tell  :-)

Well, I read the article on LES MIZ. Has this idiot ever read the novel?  Cosette is your typical Victorian heroine: virginal, pretty, bland, blonde, and an objet d'amour for Marius and a hope of redemption for Valjean. She's not as bland as David Copperfield's inane prototype for the Victorian novel, "child bride" Dora, who can't cook, keep house, or think sensibly and who for the benefit of all readers dies very soon after marrying David, but she's still the typical Victorian novel and theatrical heroine. By the 1870s in the theatre at least she'd become a joke, like most of Gilbert & Sullivan's  soprano ingenues, of which Rose Maybud is the   epitome of the calculating and golddigging, but on the surface sweet and innocent, heroine.

Funny, I do not think of Dora as the heroine in David Copperfield.

She isn't but she's the epitome of the Victorian helpless woman

I suppose so.  Today spoiled, not to bright, rich young women have their own reality shows ;)

You do have a point Jane..

DR Elmore, how are those Bell Telephone Hour specials?  I just got that DVD and haven't watched it yet.

Quite wonderful, actually, like a time capsule of another time. There are wonderful moments, some nice orchestration, usually very fine singing, and Florence's overripe diction. I did wonder if the kids she sings "Awat In A Manger" to might be the current crop of kids in SOUND OF MUSIC with her on Broadway.  Some of the costuming is very strange. I did love seeing the Buffalo Bills, Lisa della Casa, and Giorgio Tozzi.  It was a lot of fun.

Florence Henderson is doing SOUND OF MUSIC on Broadway?
