Mega happy, healthy, peaceful vibes for all of us for 2013.

Celery and peanut butter sounds like an excellent thing to stock up on.

Celery and ream cheese, too.

What else can you put in celery?

Okay, BELOVED INFIDEL it shall be tonight.  I had that planned for one day last week -- or maybe it was the week before, but I remember posting it here -- and it got set aside for holiday stuff.  But it will be the perfect thing to settle into this evening.

It is six degrees this morning.....so I think I will stay indoors today.

I read BELOVED INFIDEL.....and saw the movie once when Rona Barrett's name was attached to an afternoon movie series....and in one segment she did a Movie Star Update that was interesting.

Yes these FOX movies look very distinctive.....I like Deborah Kerr....but I don't LOVE her....something about her face is strange....and her figure was never played up in any way other than ordinary.....or didn't seem to be....but she is fine.....

RE: the Jews on Broadway show. I noticed it in my tv listings but didn't watch it.  For BK, you should have just looked up your PBS station (but maybe the DR did not mention it was on PBS). Glad you were able to find it. Many of PBS shows are listed as Great Performances... I even think Downtown Abbey is listed (on my tv) as something similar.

Good morning, all! Jan 2 has landed, the emails and phone calls have begun, and I had lots of business ro attend to this morning. Thank God nothing is too urgent, but the Man from Philadelphia likes to send long emails.

Today, I have some banking - my union pension has now kicked in - and a trip to the post office. Also, a couple of emails.

I fell in love with Deborah Kerr at the age of ten when I saw THE KING & I.  I think she's wonderful in it and THE INNOCENTS. As to the overrated Greer Garson, who stinks as Lizzie Bennett and Mrs Miniver, I'm better.

Ah....well DR JOHN G and DR ELMORE - I have to agree with you about GG - even though she once sent me a nice autographed photo....

I like her in a movie called HER TWELVE MEN....but other than that....not so much.

I do remember once she had Walter Pidgeon were presenting an award....a Golden Globe or something....I don't think it was an Academy Award.....it was late in the program and as Greer started to speak, Walter said:  "Now...we're going to hear something.....hurry up dear, don't take all night, I have an early call tomorrow...."

And Greer looked at him and said disdainfully..."Hmmm....television, no doubt..."

LOL.....

Here's a Greer Garson story from my memoir:

"Another story writer Geroge Froeschel told me took place at the wrap
party for MRS. MINIVER. He was dancing with the picture’s star, Greer Garson, when she
leaned close and whispered into his ear, 'George, if you ever write me
another terrible script like this one, I’ll have the studio fire you.'

"I wonder if, after Ms. Garson won the Academy Award, she apologized."

I really loathe that version of P&P: wrong era, coy simplified retelling, five ladies too old trying to remember their virginity, no sense of Austen's tne, and giving Edna Mae Oliver a comic ending! Absolutely trashed Austen.

A Question for BK...so, what do you do with all those screeners that you get?

We're supposed to destroy them, but I haven't yet, just in case I want to watch one again.  They say they're watermarked in some way that can be traced.

I also found much to like in  the Jews on Broadway show last night, though I thought Joel Grey's voiceover was kind of elementary school teacher-ish.  But I loved hearing the older pros speak (Laurent's Merman/Styne Seder story was wonderful!)  Also loved the brief brazeness of playing the THREEPENNY OPERA overture against the sound of Nazi goosesteps.

I only wish that the show spent some time on how current B'way has been losing the Jewish influence.  It seemed to point to WICKED as an example of the legacy, but even with Schwartz and Holzman as the creators, I think that show falls more under the Waspy-Disney umbrella.

ASK BK:

This is my first time to be around as a new book is begun, which puts me right in the mood to get into another one.  I've read, as of course you know, the two memoirs and the three Kritzers.  What do you suggest should be the next one?  Actually, make it two.

I think the Hofstetter series might be fun.  The first two are Murder at Hollywood High School and Murder at the Grove - it's best to read the first one first, but after that they don't have to be read in order, and you might like Murder at the Hollywood Historical Society as your second one.  They're very quick reads and Hollywood Historical Society introduces one of my favorite characters I've ever written, who returns in Murder at the Masquers.

Christopher Isherwood wrote that in Hollywood the gossip was that Betty Hutton could be called a nymphomaniac - if you could slow her down.

She sounds like a young lady in my college theatre dept referred to by one and all as Sin City.

I think you can wait on Jack Reacher until it hits DVD. Some good performances, but Tom Cruise is so flat and the direction so inept that it seems to be fighting against itself for too much of the movie. Cruise had to emote once in the movie and you could hear titters in the audience.

I don't think I even want to watch it on DVD.

Last week we watched Harry Carry Jr in the movie that introduced him, 3 GODFATHER'S.

John Ford was Jr's godfather and did this remake to honor his good friend Harry Carry Sr who had recently passed away.  Sr starred in the 1916 silent film THE THREE GODFATHER'S.

I thought pbs.org might have the Broadway show, but there's only an excerpt. Each episode of Downton Abbey will be shown in its entirety after it airs.

I really enjoyed the Marvin Hamlisch special, ONE SINGULAR SENSATION!.  For an actress who seems so relaxed on stage, Audra McDonald seemed rather uptight hosting the special.  That current Annie (Lillia Crawford) is certainly a little dynamo.

I feel the same way about Deborah Kerr, DR Jrand62.
But I still like her better than Miss Greer Garson in most instances.

Oh, I don't know.  You can't beat Greer Garson in RANDOM HARVEST.

Are you sure Deborah Kerr was only ten when she did THE KING AND I?  How old would that have made Marni?

What a fun day this has been.  I wrote five pages and then at noon I met the Staitman family and Jenna and her mom at the Daily Grill, where I had a BLT-A and cole slaw - so nice diet lunch.  Then we had our rehearsal, which, for a first rehearsal, was really good.  After our regular singers (I'll go into detail in the notes), Hal Linden came and he is going to bring down the house with his Rothschilds number - it's so wordy, but he's really got it down.  I just adore this man.

She only has the one, Christmas, design of Sherlock.  The others are various Berners.  I'm guessing this Christmas one was of her own dog-I forgot to ask.

Liane's website is http://www.lianeweyers.com/ and currently opens to Sherlock.  From the website of her work you can link to the stores.  I got me a women's Sherlock Christmas shirt from http://www.zazzle.com/lianeweyers that is very soft & comfortable so I plan to get another one with one of my friend's dog on it.

Maybe I should get them in different colors.  The bottom photo is of my friend in the Netherlands dog when he was a pup.  Now that he is all grown up he is one good looking dog.  If we could have one just like him I doubt we could refuse.  He had two "flaws" (like Sherlock's blue eye was a "flaw") or he would have been a show dog.

Of course, now I'll probably eat something totally ridiculous...

There was some cockamamie thing on my flight from Burbank to JFK in October -- some light came on the panel, something they're required to check out.  Fortunately, all it took was a mechanic's sign-off and I think the delay was less than an hour.  I still got back home in time for Bitch Hurricane Sandy!

Have to start learning two shows that I've only had the most passing familiarity with:  ADRIFT IN MACAO and BARNUM.

I'll be playing one of the keyboards in ADRIFT (maybe even piano/conduct if the director of the show, who's wearing a few hats, decides not to play).  It's being done by our best local theater. and should be a nice little production.

BARNUM is a high school's spring musical.  These people do an exceptionally fine job for a high school, with full orchestra, etc., but they often hire me or another pianist for various things because they never quite have the student talent quite up to doing that stuff.  BARNUM calls for two pianos, and the book doesn't split the parts -- it just tells you in fine print who should be playing and when.  I'm presuming that when both are playing, they play the same music, which probably lends it the unique sort of ragtime- or honkytonk-ish circus-y sound.  You can see how much I know about it so far.  So anyhoo, time to get studying.

In the original Broadway production the two pianists were in boxes on both sides of the stage. The great Karen Gustafson was one of them. I think the other was Ted Kocialek. I loved that production. The orchestrations were supposed to be by Hershy Kay, who had an ironclad contract. He was dying, the work was unacceptable and the score was orchestrated in a rush by a number of people like: Larry Fallon, and I forget who else now. I remember running into Karen and hearing all about the mess.

I love Barnum, too. I saw Harvey Evans do it on tour, and he's someone I've always enjoyed. Someone posted the following about Harvey on Facebook today. It's good advice for the kid who'll be playing Barnum:

Harvey Evans stood by in this show for Jim Dale. I love Harvey because he's really a connsumate pro. Anyway, when we were conversing he mentioned how one part of the show had the star walking a tightrope, and when Harvey had to go on for the first time he said that he just looked in the mirror backstage and said - "Now Harvey - we're not gonna make a problem of this, are we?". And he didn't and it went flawlessly. You just gotta love that kind of work ethic.

Darn...I missed this.  I couldn't find another broadcasting of it, either. :(

What about Martin Luther King's Birthday.  When it come to chocolate; do not forget any holiday.

And, of course, President's Day!

But that, of course, comes after Valentine's Day.
There's also Sweet Thursday, a day I like to celebrate before I celebrate Friday and after I celebrate Wednesday.

I like the way you think, sir!!

Every day is worth celebrating. And chocolate is the least of the ways to do that.

Just watched the first half of BELOVED INFIDEL, which I'm really enjoying, and started nodding off, so I came upstairs to do a few things and get a second wind.  I don't think the wind is a keeper, so I might cut my losses and finish the movie tomorrow.

Vixmom - I have always had in the back of my head to bring the Kritzerland shows to NY - obviously not once a month, but maybe one every couple of months.  The problem is I have no time to do the prep work and need someone who can do it who's in NY and would enjoy such a thing.  Right now, we are talking about bringing a show or two to Washington, perhaps to the Signature.  If that works out, then it will be easy from there.

We have not videotaped or even audio taped any of the shows.  For whatever reasons, I just don't want to do it, at least for now.

Finished with my viewing - Looper - the first forty minutes gave me a big headache trying to figure out just who was doing what to whom and why, but once it kind of became clear (in its way) then it was enjoyable on a certain level.  Now I'm going out to use the ATM and then coming back to maybe write one more page - I've done ten already today so I'm fine if I don't do any more.

I have just finished a marathon of Downton Abbey.  I've finished Season 1 and 2 episodes of season 2.  I plan to finish before the new season starts

According to the "Goofs (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1276104/trivia?tab=gf&)" section on IMDB:

Quote
The young Joe is right-handed, the older one played by Bruce Willis, is left-handed.

Sounds like someone really wasn't paying attention.

I still want to see the movie, though.

I would never take anything on the imdb, especially the "goofs" section, seriously.

I ended up writing a little over eleven pages today - finished chapter one and am a couple of pages into chapter two and just having the best time.

I'm trying to send episode four to Broadway World.  It's taking almost an hour and has fifteen minutes left.
