Title: THE JOY OF THE STUMBLE-THROUGH
Post by: bk on January 06, 2013, 12:05:09 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had joy and stumbled through, and now it is time for you to post until the stumbling cows come home.

Isn't it funny?  I wrote twelve pages and we had twelve pages of postings.  Maybe that's the new deal - as many pages as I write we have the same number of pages of posts.  I like it!

Good morning, all.

A little less Oy this morning.  Not as Oy-free as I would like, but I shall work on that.

I am enjoying my little TWILIGHT ZONE excursion.  One should have one every few years.  This one is especially nice because, since the last, I've gone from the wonderful Definitive Edition DVD set to the Blu-rays, and except for one or two slight annoyances, they are exquisite.

The main annoyance is the addition of a contemporary CBS logo WITH SUDDEN LOUD MUSIC that follows the lovely vintage "CBS eye" already lovingly preserved at the very end of each episode.  I'm deliberately forcing myself to get used to it so that it doesn't remain a "problem".  In truth, it isn't that bad, lasting for all of two, maybe three seconds, and it isn't all THAT loud or annoying.  Trust me, there are far worse ones on many other things, and many people might not even notice or think anything of it.  But we purists like to take our Twilight Zones straight, thank you very much, and it really is a redundant, uncalled for bit of modern day intrusion on an otherwise perfect presentation of top notch vintage television.

We got a little dusting of snow during the night.  It's so little there's nothing to do about it, maybe just throw a little sand over the lower steep part of the driveway, though with the sun out it'll probably just go away by itself before I get down there.  I can live with that, and best of all, nothing else is called for over the next several days.

Yes I have. I am excited for the movie. It's been a long time since I read the book though. I remember it was very long (like 600 pages). I remember the first 100 pages were very slow. But then the book was fantastic. Love it.

There are a few other book to movie releases coming up in the next year.

One is Beautiful Creatures. I still have to read that book (it comes out in Feb). I just reserved the book from the library.

Another is City of Bones. I think the movie is called Mortal Instruments. I have that book. It is supposed to be a great series. It's a series i've wanted to read for a long time.

Of course Catching Fire. Super excited about that.

And Divergent. I think this one might only be coming out in 2014. I would highly recommend the book to the Vixter if she hasn't read it yet. So far there are 2 books out (Insurgent is book 2). Book 3 comes out later this year. Veronica Roth is the author.

It is indeed Sunday morning. I thought about going down to Toyland, and decided to stay home and watch some DVDs.

When I got to Toyland, the peculiar office across from ours, which has a lot of Mexican employees, had a large red and white sign, dated 01/03/2013, from the New York County sheriff's office forbidding anyone to enter. I cannot wait to learn from the super and doorman what happened. I've always thought the pffice was strange: I had long suspected them of stealing the rolls of paper towels from the men's room, and every morning one of the men was pouring buckets of water black from what I sus[ected was toner down one of the toilets. Most peculiar.

So, that's the news for the nonce. More coffee!

Maybe I will watch the third Daimjin movie today....although it turns out that it is really the SECOND movie in the series....they put the first movie and the third movie on the first disc and the second movie on the other disc.....

I am still wondering where the missing 10 minutes of each movie went.

DRvixmom, never seen an opera?  Since you like G&S, perhaps you might like Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann, which is about a drunken pet and his visions of love, and I can recommend two possible DVDs:
This one is from the Royal Opera, directed by the great John Schlessinger, and Domingo is fantastc as Hoffmann, falling in love with a doll, a courtesan in league with the devil, and an innocent young singer who family physician wants her dead.

The one below is an warly 1950s British film with many of the roles cast with international ballet stars who "sing" throough overdubs. It's a very bizarre version of the opera, but alot of it works very well.

That bizarre version is a Powell & Pressburger film.  I have the Criterion DVD but haven't watched it.

I enjoyed the Met production from a couple of years back (it was on TV), but can't remember who did it.

If you'd like a good cry, this fimed version of Madama Butterfly is quite beautiful and sad and a great antidote to the rather dreadful Miss Saigon.

Or, perhaps you'd like seeing the great Teresa Stratas, a fantastic actress, as the tragic seamstress Mimi in the garrets of Paris of the 1840s, in a good, over-the-top Met production, very lavish!

There was a 1960s recording of MADAME BUTTERFLY with Renata Tebaldi who had to have been past 45 at the time, and when she is asked her age, she says "I'm eighteen" and giggles like an old cougar chasing a 20 year-old sailor.

Has anybody seen the BBC production of "Lost Empires" from years ago with Laurence Olivier and a very young Colin Firth? Costco has it for sale, but I don't know if it's any good. Not my favorite Priestley novel, but it was enjoyable, which is why I'm thinking of picking it up.

Yikes.  It sure is.  But I see Criterion issued the film only (no extras) in their "Essentials" series, and it's available on Amazon for $8.01:

We saw it a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Costco usually has good prices so I would pick it up for a viewing. Olivier plays a very creepy character.

It's not a stupid comedy, a violent action thriller, or LES MIS. I believe movie audiences are generally too dull for a wonderful comedy with intelligence and heart these days.

I've just watched the Bolshoi Ballet's lavish 2011 production of Tchaikovsky's SLEEPING BEAUTY. It had to many musical cuts to suit me; the score's one of the greatest things ever composed and I want to hear it. A lot of the cuts were internal, such as "play the 4-bar opening, then jump to the last 60 bars."

Then I watched the 1959 broadcast of the Royal Ballet dancing John Cranko's very funny Gilbert & Sullivan ballet, PINEAPPLE POLL. I have no idea why companies aren't performing this funny and charming ballet; it's brilliant.

I finished reading the last story this morning & loved it. After Ray Bradbury spoke at our high school I read the short story, "The Pedestrian", he talked about but didn't follow that up with any of his other books.

In 1966 I ushered over and over again, loving every minute, for  "Fahrenheit 451" and later read the novel multiple times.

Keith was the one who introduced me to science fiction films & books.  I think it took Andromada Strain, published in '69, to really get me interested.

At that point I was a Bradbury fan and found I enjoyed science fiction & yet didn't read "The Martian Chronicles".  So I have the woman in my book group, whom in all the years in this group with her has only chosen one book I've liked, to be grateful to for choosing this.

Maybe it should have been a spring movie vs a winter one.  People tend to go out for the films needed to be seen on a big screen and save for the DVD release.

Speaking of Barbra--I went to see The Guilt Trip for the 4th time today.   I don't understand why it's not doing better at the box office.

It's not a stupid comedy, a violent action thriller, or LES MIS. I believe movie audiences are generally too dull for a wonderful comedy with intelligence and heart these days.

As a matter of fact, DR Jane, the movie was originally going to be released last March, I believe and Paramount supposedly moved it because they thought it would be a big holiday success.

I think you're right, DR elmore.

Maybe it should have been a spring movie vs a winter one.  People tend to go out for the films needed to be seen on a big screen and save for the DVD release.

DR JANE I hope you read DANDELION WINE at one point.....it is a work of staggering genius.....at least it is entertaining and lovely.....

I haven't and if I can ever find it as an eBook I shall read it.  It is strange, most of his books aren't eBooks yet there are multiple study guide eBooks.

Good morning. Church is about to start.

Are you singing this morning?

Ha ha! The last time I did was the song you arranged for my mother's 90th birthday. They have never asked me to again.

Not because of the arrangement (which as beautiful!), but because I am not a singer. Which is pretty obvious.

LOL I guessed that.  You must sing better than I do cuz I wouldn't even come close to being able to do what you did.

I had dinner and watched the companion Cranko ballet to PINEAPPLE POLL, THE LADY AND THE FOOL, a sad piece about two clowns, a beautiful masked lady, and an elegant ball where she is pursued by three wealthy men.

All new episodes of ONCE UPON A TIME begin tonight.

I went into the bedroom to set this to record (found it was already set) just as a Blue Heron flew in & landed by the pond.  I moved closer to the window for a better view and it flew back out.  I was doubly lucky :)

Have you read Stephanie Meyer'sThe Host?

What is the name of the first book inthe Divergent series?

It's a very bizarre version of the opera, but alot of it works very well.

thank you Elmore!  I shall try and get my hands on these

If you'd like a good cry, this fimed version of Madama Butterfly is quite beautiful and sad and a great antidote to the rather dreadful Miss Saigon.
