RE: the notes

Interesting BK that you say you don't outline the book. And that at this point you just write a line or two so as to know what is going to happen in the remaining chapters.

Have you ever tried outlining?  Do you at least always know how the story is going to end?

I remember seeing Shampoo at the American Film Festival in Dallas.  Beatty spoke after the film and I recall some pretentious film student getting up and asking him about symbolism and themes in the movie and Beatty just looking at her befuddledly and saying: "I don't know what you're talking about.  Bob Towne and I just made a story about various people and a lifestyle we were familiar with in LA."

I bought a DVD of Lillith  for $3 at Big Lots some time ago, but have yet to watch it.

Good morning, all!

It's a morning of tsuris: after spendng the day juggling dates and working my colleagues into a frenzy, the producers of the show Rob is committed to notified him yesterday that they are postponing production for two months. Now he is unavailable in September, and there is no way my teams - copy and Dublin - could be ready to record in May. So, I've spent this morning dealing with all of this megillah.

So, today I am off to the NYPL and the Dorothy Fields Collection. I hope the trip is profitable.

Right outside our hotel we bought 48-hour tickets and at, 10:30, boarded a Big Bus tour that took us all around London.  We took about an hour break for a light lunch at the National Gallery and got back to the hotel about 4pm.  Tomorrow, we'll use the bus more for transportation than tourism.  There's also a river cruise included, so we'll try to work that into our plan.

I came home to find the temperature in my house at 63 degrees.  And yet the heater was set at 74.  It would run, but there was no fire in the furnace.  Fortunately, my heater is covered by my gas & electric company and even more fortunately, they were able to send a guy out to fix it.  Turns out my ignition was dull.

I thought it was about time I bought a new landline phone because I've had it for about 20 years. I chose and bought one a few days ago which worked for about 24 hours before developing a fault. I changed it for a different model today, which hopefully will last longer. I suppose i should have left well alone when my old phone was working perfectly well  :)

Sadly, HMV, a British institution where I have been buying LP records, then CDs, videos and DVDs etc. since 1963, has gone bankrupt. There will be nowhere left in the UK to buy music and films, other than on-line. I far prefer to browse in stores and buy and take away a physical product but it seems as if those days may have gone for good.

Not this time, DR Dan (the Man).  We both have coughs that have no place in a theatre and we don't think we should be out in the night cold.  We've seen a lot of the musicals, too.  Before Norwich, several of our classmates saw UNCLE VANYA, with the actress who plays Lady Edith in DOWNTON ABBEY in the cast.

I want to pass on the news about Junior's. I ran into a neighbor while putting out the garbage. He told me that he worked at Junior's for 33 years and never missed a day, and now, of course, has lost his job. I had no idea he worked there. He told me that someone else has already leased the space--another deli! When I asked if Junior's was going to reopen in another spot, he seemed doubtful. He also told me that the owners' assertions that they couldn't make money wasn't true.

I do hope that the new deli is a good one. My neighbor is interviewing with them later today.

The connection between the Hitchcock's Marnie and Bruce Kimmel  is/was

Sean Connery

Who played the character of Mark Rutland.

And Mark Rutland was the director screen credit that Bruce Kimmel used for the movie "Prime Suspect" with Dana Plato, Susan Strassberg, Frank Stallone & Skip E. Lowe

Jennifer - I've explained my writing process many times.  I have never outlined ANY book, not just the mysteries.  It's not how I work and I would find it constraining to have an outline.  What I do is have pages of notes with things that will be or not be in the book.  Events, characters, plot points.  With the Hofstetter books I know who the victim will be but I never know who the killer will be until about halfway through the book because I like to go on the journey with Miss Hofstetter - to see things and clues as she does.  It's more fun, more interesting, at least for me.  When I decide, then I make sure everything that precedes that decision is not giving anything away - it usually isn't because I haven't known.

DR Doug R, I'm sorry and just a bit shocked to hear that about HMV.  For some reason, I would have thought that the UK would have been slower to lose its stores.  Maybe I've thought that because from things I'd read back in the day, LPs seemed to remain such a bigger deal there longer than in the US.

Surely there are secondhand stores for this stuff?

DR Ben, I still find J&R a fascinating place to visit once a year or so.  Last time I was in there (yikes, I think it was way more than a year ago), they had quite the little LP department, both new and vintage.  And though it looked like everything was being sold at list price, the DVD/Blu-ray room stock was very impressive.

B&Ns might seem sterile, but a couple of the largest ones are still nice.  In particular, I supposed it's out of the way for most everyone here, but the Paramus, NJ store is not only a large one, it also contains the Annex for used and bargain books.  I think that Annex is what used to be across Fifth Ave. (at 18th St.) from the original store.  I've found a fair number of interesting things that had slipped under the radar out there in Paramus.  And for movies, they're still our last best hope.

Then, as I stepped onto the third floor elevator, I ran smack into the exiting Ian Marshall Fisher, who directed the 1998 BBC Radio production of JUBILEE. We went over to Alice Tully Hall for acup of coffee and chatted for about 2 and a half hours. It was a wonderful visit.

There is almost no where to physically buy things even in New York. I can go down to

J&R (http://www.jr.com/category/music/soundtracks-hy-orig-cast/)

for OCRs and other CDs and if I want used I can go to Academy, though they are selling fewer and fewer OCRs also. It's depressing!

Shopping for OCRs was always a big part of my trips to New York. The last time, I did go to a Barnes & Noble, but it was sterile and dull. Any good used CD stores?

Academy on 18th Street used to be great but now it's only so-so. They don't buy many OCRs because they say the discs just sit there. They do have some out of print stuff for reasonable to outrageous prices but I don't go there much anymore. What used to be many bins of OCRs and soundtracks is now just 3 small rows of stuff. The rest are DVDs and in the back they have a large classical collection.

Barnes and Noble is hit and miss. The one on Union Square has cut back drastically on CDs. Most of the space was given over to the Nook. They have some stuff but not half of what they used to have.

I bought a TON of stuff -- lots of LPs, a few books -- at Academy back in the day (early 1990s).  Got some GREAT items from there, at very reasonable prices.  I really miss the way the store was originally, and I also miss Skyline Books across the street.  Boy, the more I think about it, the more time (and $$) I realize I spent on 18th Street.

And now, time to write.  I began the new chapter after completely reworking the end of the previous chapter before printing out.  But since I always like to leave Muse Margaret with the first line of the new chapter, I wrote that.  And that's all that I've written so far, so I must buckle down, Winsocki and write.  Happily, that one line, which took me about forty minutes to come up with, leads me right into something that will be fun to write.

Randy and Jo were very sad over the deaths of both Max and Maddie within 2and a half months  of each other last fall. They now have a new puppy, named Blaze, whom Jo said she is spoiling to death.

I dearly loved Max and Maddie, but I do think Blaze is awfully adorable.

They drove to Iowa or somewhere in the midwest on Saturday to get him.

Oh right, the new recording of "Sweeney Todd" - I'm through "The Worst Pies of London" and I'm already bored.  I'm sorry, this music does not work without the singer doing some acting with their vocals.  The chorus is a "Chorus" - there is no accents, colors, or anything, flat as paint.  I'd rather have the score sung with some acting and character and sacrifice the quality of the singing, especially with "Sweeney Todd"  I'm hoping to get through it, but I can't promise anything.  LOL

I had tried resetting it. But did not do it for the full 20 seconds. So when i saw to do it that long on amazon.com help, I did it. And thankfully it started. But i was freaking out for 15 minutes.

I fear my Nook will lock in the middle of a book and not resart.

That's funny.

I'm glad you dodged the bullet.

We're getting a new library in San Antonio -- with no books.

http://news.yahoo.com/library-without-books-bibliotech-open-193118588--abc-news-tech.html

It's an interesting idea. But I don't know if I want to only read on my ereader. I love physical books. Right now I am about 50-50, leaning more on the side of reading actual books.

My library does not loan out to kindles right now. My favorite part though about ereader reading is the font size. It is always perfect!

On their facebook page Junior's mentioned they might have found a new location.  JOB VIBES FOR YOUR NEIGHBOR!

Too many damn distractions today - constant and annoying.  It shatters my concentration and it's like starting from scratch when I try to get back in the rhythm of writing what I was writing.  The only call that meant anything today was from Muse Margaret who'd read the first thirty of the eighty-seven pages she got today (she'll finish the rest in the morning) - she wanted me to know she loved them, and that made me very happy.

I guess I've done about seven pages so far, so I'll take an hour break and then do three or four more, which should get me almost to the end of a chapter.  And I know how this chapter ends, so that's good.  After that, seven more chapters to go.

Oh, I meant to mention that I love Dorothy Fields' songs. I don't know why she isn't better known among the general populus. Her songs are, but not her name.
She's great. There's a decent bio of her, "On the Sunny Side of the Street: The Life and Lyrics of Dorothy Fields."

Thanks, John G. I may buy a copy. Plus, I learned that there's a CD available, a combination of Ms Fields talking about her life and also singing.

Bruce, DOWNTON ABBEY doesn't release until January 29. Are you getting it before the release date?

I had a frustrating  NYPL visit, but I did get to chat with several librarians I like.

What a nice thing!

I'm getting it from the UK - it came out there two weeks ago and was shipped last week so it should be here very soon - usually normal shipping from the UK takes four or five days tops, and it will be day six tomorrow.

Jo says he's eight weeks old and huge. Since he's got home, he's only had three accidents in the house, and Jo's looking for an obedience class for him.

Three?  I have had more accidents than that this week.

Just one more night of these freezing temps. I would enjoy it a lot more if my garden wasn't freezing. I have no idea how much will be left when this is all over.

I am sorry  how are the caterpillars doing?

They are growing. I will put them on the plant my friend gave me tomorrow, as they have eaten the clippings she gave me. I think The Monarch Scientist has a small amount of plants, so I will give some caterpillars to her.

How do you know that your friend is going to give you a plant tomorrow?

I guess I've done around eleven pages today.  Not the easiest chapter, but I think it came out well, and it definitely ends well.
