And the new Kritzerland releases are:

Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition soundtrack release:

BUTCH AND SUNDANCE: THE EARLY YEARS

Music Composed and Conducted by Patrick Williams

What do you do when you have a smash hit film that becomes an instant classic, that breaks box-office records, and that audiences flock to see.   Easy – you do a sequel, of course.  However, doing a sequel becomes a little problematic if your two leading characters are dead at the end of the film. That was the problem faced by Twentieth Century-Fox in 1969 with their monster hit, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, written by William Goldman, directed by George Roy Hill, and starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford in what some would say were the most iconic roles of their long and illustrious careers.  So, nothing happened because what could happen?  But a decade later, in 1979 someone finally came up with a way to bring back Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid – not in a sequel, put a prequel.  Back in 1979 prequels were a rarity – in fact, some folks say that Butch and Sundance: The Early Years was the first film to actually use the term prequel.  Whether that’s true or legend, there certainly weren’t many true prequels prior to it.

Richard Lester was hired to direct.  Lester had already helmed such classics as A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Petulia, The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, the hugely underrated Juggernaut and Robin and Marian, and many others.  His quirky style ended up being perfect for Allan Burns’s quirky script for Butch and Sundance: The Early Years.  The casting was inspired – up-and-comers Tom Berenger and William Katt were cast in the Newman/Redford roles and at times the resemblances were uncanny. Rounding out the cast were such terrific supporting players as Michael C. Gwynne, John Shuck, Christopher Lloyd, Peter Weller, and Brian Dennehy.

The resulting film wasn’t a hit.  But, over the years, thanks to home video and cable, the film has developed a real cult following and deservedly so, because the film is an absolute delight.  One of the things that makes the film work so well is the great score by Patrick Williams.  For Butch and Sundance: The Early Years, Williams wrote an eclectic score – playful, beautiful, filled with adventure and bravado, tenderness, and gorgeous melodic themes.  It works perfectly in the film, complementing the visuals, the comedy, and the drama, a real old-fashioned honest-to-goodness film score by a master composer.

Almost the entire score for Butch and Sundance: The Early Years was recorded twice.   Some cues remained exactly the same in both orchestration and writing, while other cues had slight differences in orchestration and timing, while other cues had quite a bit of different material.  We present the entire score as used in the film (along with an unused cue), and then, as a bonus we present the original versions of cues where they differed from the rerecorded cues.

Butch and Sundance: The Early Years is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the last week of February but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

And:

Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition soundtrack release:

WHO’S GOT THE ACTION?

Music Composed and Conducted by George Duning

Once upon a time, the frothy and fizzy comedy was a staple of Hollywood – and these films, with nothing much on their minds other than providing an audience with lots of laughs and a good time, popped up weekly, year after year.  Dean Martin did a number of them for Paramount, and in 1962 it was Who’s Got the Action?  And as if Dean Martin wasn’t enough, add to the mix gorgeous Lana Turner and such brilliant comic actors as Eddie Albert, Paul Ford, John McGiver, Nita Talbot, and, most especially, Walter Matthau, and you have a recipe for a raucously funny romp.

But no frothy and fizzy comedy can succeed without a frothy and fizzy score, and Who’s Got the Action? has a great one by a man who truly understood how to score a frothy and fizzy comedy – George Duning.   Duning wrote instantly memorable themes and Who’s Got the Action? is full of them.  Duning’s main theme uses a five-note motif that matches the syllables of “Who’s Got the Action?” and it sets the tone for the rest of the score, which is quirky, lushly romantic, effervescent, and just plain memorable.  Duning was one of the greats, whether scoring comedies such as this, or films like Picnic, The World of Suzie Wong, The Devil at Four O’Clock or his brilliant television scores for Paramount’s Star Trek, The Original Series.

This is the world premiere release for Who’s Got the Action?  The score is presented as it is heard in the film.  The tracks are mostly stereo, but five of the film’s twenty cues existed in mono only on the music stem.  Nonetheless, we felt that presenting them in order was the best way.   As a bonus, we include a demo version of the title tune with lyrics by Jack Brooks, and a couple of classical cues used as source music.  It’s always a treat to bring more George Duning to CD.  He was a wonderful composer whose work is always fresh and melodic – what great film music is all about.

Who’s Got the Action? is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the last week of February but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

George asked when the Blu-ray of Outside the Box will be available - we'll start working on the special features as soon as the final episode airs.  It will be a few weeks to get all that done, but in the meantime we'll send the hi-rez files to the authoring house so they can get started on authoring them, the menus, etc.

From yesterday:
Let's see.  I"ve lost 10 pounds since I started my diet on the 3rd, but haven't started exercising yet. I do have Zumba but haven't taken it out of the box

good for you!! I need to drop 20 -25 lbs but at this point I figured I should finish the  goodies we got at Christmas -  can't let good Godiva chocolates go to waste!

You got Godiva for Xmas?

I did - somebody very kind  must like me

and I AIN'T sharing!

My first thought was, "You still have Godiva chocolate left over from Christmas??"

DR Jeanne - you are right. It is unusual to get snow in London - especially as much as in the past few days. Most years we get no snow at all, or at least, nothing that settles.

The weather has gone COLD! I have the day off (MLK Day) but I won't be going out anywhere. It's 27 degrees, not horribly cold (if you live in Iowa or Minnesota it's colder) but it's cold enough.

We have a friend coming over later. He's a computer neophyte and needs some help installing a program.

That's the extent of our day.

Oh, yes, I forgot, a piece on the toilet broke so Anthony will go over to Home Depot and buy a replacement and install it before our friend arrives in case he needs to use the commode.

Bye for now.

Good morning, all!  Yes, DR Ben, it is cold this morning! I had another restless night with little sleep, but I am dressed and moving.

I've been debating going into the office or staying home today, and I think I will stay home.  I'll do a little bit of work and then watch some DVDs.  I've got to type up the corrections on the Moross scores. I've been procrastinating.

I believe that tonight I will have dinner with Bruce Pomahac, and give him his Christmas gift.

More coffee!

TOD: I think my favorite so far has been the pilot episode, just because it opened the door to this wonderful world and the characters that inhabit it. The Titanic sinking and the historical aspects of setting were well detailed. And maybe it's my imagination, but I somehow feel the camera lavished even more attention to detail, especially in the servants' actions in that first episode. Nothing has been taken for granted since, but I just remember greedily soaking in moments that I hadn't really seen since "Gosford Park."

Change in plans. Our neophyte friend is having problems with his laptop and needs to call Dell so he won't be coming over. I will go with Anthony to Home Depot. I am properly layered with a t-shirt, a turtleneck and a jacket underneath my Lands End coat. I have a good scarf, a hat and old-fashioned ear muffs and good gloves. The coat also has a hood which I won't need to use.

I'll be warm on our walk to 23rd Street and 5th Avenue

I was up at six, announced, and went back to bed.  Prior to going to bed, I'd come up with what I thought was kind of a neat way into the penultimate chapter, so I made some notes.  I got up at nine and wrote the first three pages that way, but something about it didn't feel right, so I went back and changed it a bit - I'll see how that feels when I'm back from lunch.  I think it's better.  I was trying to keep the reveal a secret until it's actually revealed, but it's such a cheat to do it and it's a very literary device (where the character knows who she's talking to but the reader does not - there would be no way to film such a scene).  But even though you know when she begins the conversation who it is, the who will still be a surprise and her tale is the thing once you know the who, and then it goes on from there.

Matthew, tell us more about the Next to Normal production you saw. Local group or who staged it? What kind of band/orchestra/two keyboards? And what was the audience like? Were they into it? The show intrigues me. I like things on the album and would like to see it, but i wouldn't want anything less than a band playing the score.

Easy for you to say.

I did not watch the second season of DOWNTON ABBEY.....just the first episode and it didn't pull me in.....

So I will probably watch Season Three just to see what they are up to.

I liked the Season One episode that had the suitor coming to Downton.....but mostly to steal back his love letters from the footman.

I have spent the afternoon watching the first two episodes of Season 2, and I'm ready for No. 3.  It's all quite fascinating. I just never got to it last year.

Hope you have the whole season at your disposal, you may not want to stop until you get to the end.

I finished Disc 1, and I will have to hold off on the next until dinner is over tonight.  Several years ago I had a marathon and watched every episode of the original UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS, which took me weeks.

Back from lunch.  I actually decided to go with my initial instinct about the chapter - it's kind of fun - I just had to find a smoother way of doing it, which I did.  No packages.

Sometimes I think that 27 with a little moisture in the air feels colder that the very cold we have today.

Have just planned a quick trip to NYC a month from now.  It's a Thursday to a Saturday. I really do want to see Drood.  I'm still concerned about boarding Callie, but I can't just stay home the rest of her life, so I'll board her for a couple days.  Alyce can pick her up from the vet Saturday Morning so she's home when I get here.  I have a feeling it will be worse for me than Callie.  I am going to ask the vet if there is something else I can give her so she wouldn't need the meds for a couple days, but I'm guessing the answer is no

Oy and vey - and vey and oy.  I'm cleaning up the office because it's going to become the "roommates" bedroom, and what did I find?  The "Eileen" CD that I purchased from Amazon when it was released.  Yes, if you've paid attention, you already know that I bought the digital version a few weeks ago thinking that I was behind on purchasing it.  Don't worry, it's going to a good home.  But it goes to show where my head has been the last few weeks.  Oy again!

I've done ten pages so far, which would normally put me close to finishing a chapter, but since this is the penultimate chapter, it's going to be about three to five pages longer than the usual chapters.  But I'm wrapping it up and will definitely finish this chapter in the next few hours - I'm taking a break to watch a motion picture and clear my head - then the real question will be whether I pull one of my crazy tears and just finish the final chapter this evening.  I did that on the last Hofstetter book, doing twenty-five pages in one day.  We'll see how I'm feeling.

So, "Les Miz" will be on DVD in March. Why announce that when it's still in the Top 10 at the box office? Makes me not want to go see it at a theater. I could probably bear the closeups better at home anyway.

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is on DVD--and even at Netfilx which is slow with new releases--even though it's still in the theaters. I don't know what the thinking is behind this.

To answer your question from yesterday, DR TCB, yes I would say that the guy playing Captain Hook did a pretty good job.

Thanks.   ;D

Well, as of thirty minutes ago, I have finished the fifth Adriana Hofstetter mystery.  I did go on a tear and ended up doing twenty pages today.  I'm sure there'll be plenty of finessing, futzing and fixing tomorrow, and then I'll print out the new pages. Xerox them, and then deliver to Muse Margaret.

It's always very emotional after finishing a book, and this one has a somewhat emotional ending, which I loved writing.

Congratulations, BK!!

Well, that is mighty peculiar.  I made a post about Republic of Pie, the post absolutely went through, and yet the post has disappeared into the ether.  I find that very odd.

Well, tonight I watched "Chinatown" with Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.  I really liked it.  Right after I finished the movie, I rewatched Episode 4 of "Outside the Box" and understood it.  I also enjoyed it a lot more than before. :D

Is the House of Pies still near you?

Man, I tell you I feel weird not typing pages right now.  I also feel elated that I'm not typing pages right now.

Tonight's episode of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" with Guy Fieri came to Olympia!  They featured Darby's, a little restaurant on the same block as the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, and one of my niece's favorite restaurants...they offer vegetarian and vegan menu choices!

So far, I haven't seen anyone that I know. ::)

I haven't gone there very often, but everything that I've had there has been very good.
