Title: THE SETTING UP OF THE PRINTER
Post by: bk on January 31, 2013, 12:02:12 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the new printer and the setting up of same, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently setting up their new MOOlett- Packard printer.

TOD:

First computer used:  Something whose name escapes me that ran on 8" floppies.

First "PC" (Personal Computer):  Apple IIc running VisiCalc at work.

My own first one:  Commodore 128 -- which I still have, with tons of accessories and books, and it still works 27 years later.

First time online:  Local BBSs, then QuantumLink (original incarnation of AOL) on the above.

First IBM-clone:  HP 386 from Costco with 40MB hard drive.  Online with AOL and Prodigy, all still direct dial-up.

First internet:  in 1993, through Delphi dial-up.  Various other dial-up services till 2002 when Comcast finally got to our street with high speed internet.

Didn't do much in Newsgroups but "worked" as a helper in AOL's Applications Forum for a while and became active in a text-based group on ECHO in NYC (modeled on The WELL in CA) - which I'm still on.

Good Lord-- that was the story of my life!

I think I got my first computer in 1986, a basic Mac.

What I really liked was the word processor.  Finally, when I was writing something and wanted to make a change, I didn't have to retype the entire page.

I can't recall when I first went on the Internet.

Good morning, all!

I stayed up too late reading the biography of Brit actor Phil Daniels,so when the alarm rang at 6:30, I stayed in bed until 7:30. I will shortly head down to Toyland, proofread the new piano-vocal for "Armful of Trouble," work a bit on my Rodgers & Hart bibliography and come home.  On my way back, I'll stop at City Center and pickup my tickets for tonight's performance of FIORELLO.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hsppy Birthday, DR MichaelShayne !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First computer - a Tandy 1500....with BIG 5 1/4 floppy discs and some nice programs....but NOT windows....got it in 1993 and used it for many years to write documents and print posters, etc....a nice dot matrix printer.

THEN....I got an IBM clone in the fall of 1998 so that I could get on the inner web.....and I used Freeweb which was a FREE ISP....dial up....

I used that computer for a few years....Windows 98......then I got a nice Dell computer with Windows XP.  THEN I got a computer whose brand I don't remember.....but it had a NASCAR theme....  Then I got a Sony all in one.....and I now have a NEWER Sony All In One that I really like!  I am running VISTA....which I don't hate as much as many people do.

I do not know from Newsgroups.

Greetings from Toyland!  I stopped at the TD Bank to use their Penny Arcade to get rid of a lot if change, and as it seems to be usual, the machine was being cleaned and serviced. I had to put up with a bitchy teller who responded quite nastily to my comment that it was always being serviced between 9:30 and 10:00am. Since the damned bank opens at 7:30am, I do not understand why the stupid machine cannot be serviced first thing in the morning or just before they close at 8:00pm. She wasn't amused and neither was I.

Perhaps they know I hate their stupid Regis (can I smirk more in the next take) Philbin commercials?

I don't understand either why more banks don't have these wonderful machines.

TOD:

First work computer was about 1988. MS DOS with floppy discs. There was a lot of resistance from staff in having to use computers (this was a government department!) but I was amongst the first to use them.

First home pc was about 1999, which was a Dell. I've had several Dell's since then. Present one is four years old which I've had no
troble with. Still on Vista. I also have a six year old Toshiba Windows XP laptop which I don't use much now. For travel use I have a Windows 7 netbook.

Ah yes....floppy discs and MS DOS......

You always had to have the DOS disk in when you booted up.....and if you didn't have a secondary drive, you could take that disk out and put in your program disk............

Seems like ancient times now.....

My first one looked like this.....the monitor was placed on top of the CPU unit.  I remember that Tandy was one of the first companies to advertise their system as a HOME computer.....

I was very resistant to computers.  The first I worked on was in 1988, I think, when I rewrote someone's script.  There were macros for everything, I lost an entire day's work when the system crashed, it printed out on those awful papers with the sides you had to tear off, and the font, the only one there was, I think, was horrible.  So, it was years until I tried again.  I had my trusty IBM Selectric, which I loved.  Then I got a typewriter/word processor, but it seemed stupid, so I continued with my Selectric.  Then around 1998 I got a Compaq Presario at Varese and that enabled me to get on the Internet at work - slowly.  I think it was in 1997, though, that I was given Web TV, and that was my Internet for years.  I never had a home computer until 2000, when I got a Toshiba laptop, which I still have in the garage and which still boots up.  I found some fascinating documents on it two years ago.  Those were the wacky days when you saved everything to floppy discs - I still have all of those, plus for the bigger saves I had an external zip drive, which I still have along with THOSE discs.

In 2001 I got a Dell laptop, and that I had until I switched to Apple.  Too many problems with the Dell, horrible tech support in India, but I wrote my first three books on that Dell, or two anyway.  Then, when the Dell hard drive crashed and I lost everything on that computer (most of which was backed up on floppies or zips) I literally put the thing on the floor and stomped it into pieces.  Then I remember vividly canvassing our dear readers at the time whether I should make the switch to a Mac laptop.  The consensus was yes, and I bought the Mac Powerbook and it was a world-changer.  Suddenly everything was easy as pie - and I had Word for Mac.  I did have a hard-drive problem a year in, but I had Apple Care and they gave me a new hard drive and there were no problems after that.  Plus, I had an external backup drive by that time and everything saved to that.

This week has been busy and I haven't had too much time to post on HHW - except when I'm sitting in a coffee place killing time.  Today it's Starbucks and I'm out of the house because of the cleaning lady (who does not have an evil eye but likes to chat) is doing her bi-weekly thing.  I'm feeling a bit like bk as I leave the home environment as she does her thing.  But now since my office is in my bedroom and she cleans the bedroom, I kinda have to get out of there.

In the meantime.  I'm doing some preliminary work on the Keyboard 2 part for The Drowsy Chaperone which is pretty simple, programming wise, but the more I can do before I actually program the keyboard, the less time it takes.  So, I'm putting the patches in order and writing in ranges, etc.

There's been a panic here because beefburgers sold in several of the major supermarkets were tested and found to contains portions of horse meat. One burger was found to be nearly 30% horse. This led to the shelves being cleared of all burgers. Apparently the illegal meat processed by a major supplier, came from Poland.

As I'm presently in the position of having to replace my laptop, I'm "this" close to making a jump from PC to MacBook that I've been seriously considering for some time.  It's a big step, starting with price and going from there.  And everyone's needs are different, so who can say how much I'll like it.  But I'm ready for a change of scenery.  And I know I can run Windows if I really want or need certain programs.

How long do you get the books for? Cause if you get them for three weeks and read a book every two days then you should not have to rush.

True, I should be able to read them all in the 3 weeks allotted.

Now you have me counting my books on Goodreads I noticed you have read more books than I have this year.  Since you reached your goal of 100 books last years why didn't you increase it this year?

This is what I posted on July 17, 2008, 12:32:19 AM (http://www.haineshisway.com/smf/index.php?threadid=1813;start=msg481407#msg481407):

Quote
...the first computer that I owned was the Texas Instruments 99/4A.  It had a whopping total 16K of memory!

and then:

Quote
It used a tape recorder for memory storage.  To program music, you had to enter three numbers for every note...one for the pitch, one for the volume and one for the duration, and you could only program up to three different notes at any one time.  If you wanted one note to hold while another changed, you had to actually repeat that holding note.  I once programmed "Birdland," recorded by The Manhattan Transfer, but was only able to program half the song at a time (and up to three notes at a time) because there wasn't enough memory for the whole song!  I loved that computer, but my parents sold it at a garage sale when I was away at college. :P

:)

The next few computers that I owned were hand-me-downs from my sister's boyfriend.  He worked on computers where he worked and knew how to build them.  The one I have now and have had for a few years, I bought myself from Dell.  Vista had been released but I didn't want to take the plunge, so I paid for the XP downgrade.  I was sent the Vista upgrade disc, if I ever want to go to that, but at this point, I doubt that I need to upgrade this computer to anything else.  I won't upgrade until the next time that I need to buy a whole new computer.

Interesting.  I don't believe I have ever had that done.

I called around once and the banks that have them, including ours, charged for the service.

You know, last night I was looking at what our GUESTS were looking at - you know, old threads.  On my 60th birthday day would you like to know how many pages of posts there were?  Would you?  Sixty-five.  Today, three.  So, are our glory days behind us or what?  And lest you think it's because we had so many posts from people no longer here, there weren't more than a total of twenty from those types.

Congrats on the review DR ELMORE!

I want my friends on HHW to be the first to know....I am in the $$$$$.  I just received the following message at my Yahoo email address:

An Iraqi made a fixed deposit of €24,500.000.00 in a bank  where I am a director.
He died with his entire family in the war leaving behind no next of kin.

If you choose to stand as my deceased client's next of kin, mail me at the address below:

Yours Truly,
Daniel Llopis.

In separate news....I can also get ready for Better Sex in Just 20 Days!

This is fantastic news, DR JRand62! Are you more excited about the $$ or the better sex?

My feeling was that it might create melting that would then refreeze, but I think it would depend on conditions, amount of snowfall, etc.  Let us know how it works!

Goodreads lets you adjust your goal. I was not sure what to set it at this year so I decided to put 100. But if I am still ahead I can change it later.  I just didn't want to feel pressured to have to read more than I wanted to. Remember I said that sometimes I don't read for days in between books.

Then I got a Sony all in one.....

Would that have been Sony & Cher?

Interesting.  I don't believe I have ever had that done.

Haven't tried it but I've thought about doing so.

Well, he knew what he was doing.  I left a little before 7 for movie night at Katie's, about 3 blocks away.  During the movie, it snowed about an inch and the streets were pretty slick, but our driveway was clear.  I am home safe & sound.

Our pond was very busy today, no Wood Ducks but the Ring-necked Ducks, all seven of them, were busy diving down for the weeds. We can see all the weeds they have pulled up floating in the pond.  Keith thinks they are getting them from the roots which is good.

We also had a Blue Heron out there for awhile.

I very much enjoyed the Encores! production of FIORELLO. The only production I had ever seen before was in Cincinnati, around 1975, conducted by an acquantance of mine and DR Ginny. It was so dreadful, I've always looked down on the piece itself, considering it the weakest Bock & Harnick show.  Well, it's really a wonderful show, and the Encores! cast was quite good. I'm very grateful that I've had a chance to revise an opinion.

Just got in from the final dress for Legally Blonde  I had such issues tonight with the computer and the amp.  How I long to do an acoustic show.  Someone asked when the last time I played a real piano in a show, and I can't remember. It probably was Urinetown in 2006.  Sad, sad I tell you.

Because DD's #2 and #3 don't get along, I'm forced to sleep with my bedroom door closed.  That's an issue since the wall heater is in the hallway.  So, I went out and bought a small heater, just enough to take some of the chill out.  I also bought a humidifier.  We started using one in the bedroom a few months ago and it decreased snoring (both of us) and it really made the room less dry from the cold and made sleep easier.  However, the former DP finally took it and put it in his room.  The upside is that the humidifier I bought makes little to no noise.  The other made a noise.  Score for me!

Things are going well here at the homestead.  We all seem to be existing well in the new situation.  That's all one can hope for, I suppose.
