Title: ROBBIE
Post by: bk on February 20, 2013, 11:41:05 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about my old friend Robbie, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - I think Robbie would have loved the cows and this here site, that's what I think.

Good morning, all!  I slept well, given the general aches and shoulder problems. I work up around midnight when an unsettling dream was heading into nightmare territory, but I remember no more unsettling dreams last night. Just aches and pains.

Today is another City Center day with Joshie. I've got a couple of things to take him and they're in my bag. I hope I can run quickly through the rest of this ballet and be out of there no later than 3pm.

I've had too many friends I've lost contact with, and now I would love to know what's become of them. I know that several are no longer living. During the most brutal moments of the AIDS crisis in Manhattan in the 1980s and 1990s, I lost so many dear friends that I can't count them all.

These folk were all good friends I've lost contact with and miss:
Grades 1-12
Robert Keister
John Hawkins
Sam Lato (died at age 19)
Jean Nardin (died around 1972)
Sandy Gregory (deceased ??)
David Wassell (deceased)

1965-1979
Michael Taulbee (died 1979)
Howard Philips (deceased)
Rick Ferguson
Mike Hermetz
Linda Lehmkuhl
Sue Stazyk
Earl Bush
Shari Caldwall
Beth Ewing
Roy Greene

1979-
Jeff Gingold
John Mekeel
Rick Maecker

Occasionally, one suddenly turns up. Recently, my (and Ginny's DH Richard) high school's valedictorian started keeping tabs on the class of 1964, and I made contact with Anne Swisher, who'd gone through grades 1-12 with me, played cello in a score I wrote around 1966, and whom I last saw on the day we (and her husband Steve, who'd also gone through 12 years of public schools with us) graduated in 1968 from Miami University. I was really happy to find her.

Either by choice or design i have very few memories that I can immediately recall. Someone has to say something or I read an article or see a photo then perhaps I can recall someone or something. I wish I could.

TOD:

Mrs. Patricia Borgstrom, my high school drama teacher, was the first one to really believe in my abilities and encourage me to pursue my show biz dreams.  She gave me the lead in the senior play (A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER), which was the high point of my high school years.

I'm very supportive of City Center Encores and over the years gave to them when we did well, and of course their powers-that- be include some friends, as you know elmore - and they've been helpful at giving me information about where some of the people who have been plaguing me are located (like Connecticut rather than other states, it turned out, who really knew?)

But I was surprised to now see that their regular official Encores videographer (at least for the past five or six shows) is none other than the company Reel Time, which is 100% owned by, get this, Jonathan Frank, the very person who has been plaguing me who filed a weird legal complaint to have my legal license taken away on a very bizarre technicality,   As they say in Disney World, it's a small friggin' world after all.  :(

Something else in the notes that struck me --

I HATE it when somebody decides that something that's happened at a certain time of year, for many years, should be changed.  The Oscars, for me, even when living in Los Angeles, were a "springtime" event.  They took place as the seasons and one's moods were in transition.  Living in the northeast, that sense became all the more heightened, and it lent something a little extra to the fun of that awards night.

Another case in point:  the Super Bowl.  I don't care about football at all, but I've certainly been around a lot of people and had close friends for whom that's a very exciting event, and I even enjoyed taking in the fun at a couple of Super Bowl parties back in the day.  Somehow, the third weekend or whatever it was in January was just perfect for that, and its regular appearance provided one more little measure of comfort and predictability in one's routine.  When I lived in Redondo Beach, I quickly learned to enjoy the tradition of the "Super Sunday" South Bay 5K, or 10K, or whatever it was, going right past my apartment along the "boardwalk" there.  I loved taking my coffee and Danish out the back door of the building and watching the happy people running by.

Traditions.  That's all these are.  And those are examples of two that don't literally affect me in the slightest...and yet the fact of their existence did.

While I'm ranting, the absolute worst might be the changing of the spring and fall time changes.  In the northeast, at least, it's just WRONG that Halloween and Trick or Treat night must now be started so late in the evening because it stays light out.  A few years after this change, people here still complain about what it's taken away from the latter part of October.  And again, even in L.A., I loved that mid-October time change that signaled the more subtle but still very real change in seasons and activities.  Same thing with the spring change.  These are just wrong in their "new and improved" positions.

TOD:

Probably my best friend from my teen years, Dave. He was the only person I knew back then who shared a love of a wide variety of vintage movies...from obscure, to foreign, to silents, sci-fi, horror, etc. as well as a keen interest in film making.

During out Jr High School years we had competing 8mm film production companies, both specializing in clay animation science fiction films.

When I was walking down the platform to board the train, it appeared that most of the window seats were taken so I followed a group of people to the front , where I assumed there might be more of choice of seating.  Well, there wasn't.  I sat with a woman who looked at me like I didn't belong, but went ahead anyway.

After we left Penn Station, the conductor came through for tickets. I gave him mine and he informed me that I was sitting in business class with a coach ticket.  I told him I didn't realize it and moved to the next car.   Looking back, the only thing different that I could remember was the footrests and more leg room.  But the leg room in coach is fine for me, especially when you're used to being cramped in a plane.

And there was lots of room in the car, so I'm happier here.  I guess the woman instinctively knew that I didn't belong in business class!

Brent's show was great (as you might expect)!  He sang "Night Songs," including "Tonight at 8," "Music of the Night," "Some Enchanted Evening,"  the other song from the 80's (?) i think is also called "Music of the Night."   His last song was "Romantic Notions," and his encore was "Never Neverland."  Regarding the latter, he mentioned that he hears it being sung while he's in his dressing room and this was his chance to be the one to sing it.  I think that was one of my favorites.

I think the audience last night was one of the most enthusiastic ever.  Brent mentioned that it was like seeing his life before him when he looked at the crowd.  Apparently there were friends from his entire career represented.

I have never thought of Cinderella as either mental or someone with a foot fetish. But apparently it occurred to Douglas Carter Beane, who has written the book for the new version of R&H's Cinderella.

Here's a comment from an interview with Playbill:

For Cinderella, the research stretched back to the 17th century, to the original 1697 story by Frenchman Charles Perrault. "As I read it, I thought, that's really good," recalled Beane. "It was a really smart story. It wasn't a story where Cinderella was this psychotic waif who was prince-stalking and had foot fetishes. It was social satire. I thought, that's my way in."

The first thing I read today were bk's notes.  They are usually the first thing I read in the morning anyway... but I'm so saddened and touched by the story, it's likely to stay with me today.  It really does ground you in reality.  Maybe that 4th book in the Kritzerland series might get written some  day....

I have returned from City Center.  I finished the ballet quickly; there were several cuts, so it was shorter than the bar count. Then I proofed "The Strongest Man In The World," walked to Broadway and took the 104 bus home. On the bus, I ran into E&T DR JoseS, who has promised to return in the near future. It was nice to catch up with him.

Then I got home to find two emails from Dublin: we may have our Aunt Minnie!

Sounds like there's going to be an extremely low-budget film version of "The Last Five Years" with Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

DR Vixmom I looked up national chocolate day.  Apparently there are various days honoring chocolate making it very confusing.  I found various dates as the answer.  This link includes a few of them.

I'm too old for an iPhone. It has taken me several days now to get the sharing set up to hear music. For the past three evenings, it has said that it needs to update something either on the computer or on the phone and then proceed to need at least two hours to do it. It's working now and it's nice. The sound is better than my MP3 player.

Still, it makes me feel old.

Very good news, Larry!  Good luck!

Back from a wonderfully fun lunch with Dick Lochte - we figured out the last time I saw him was at one of my Christmas Eve Dos in my other Studio City abode, when his child was about three - seventeen years ago - how exactly does that happen?

Picked up some packages and a couple of bite-sized cheesecake things.  I had the combo Louis (so did Dick) and ate a little less dressing than usual.

Bruce for the last couple of days I've been feeling very much as you are.  During the many, many years I practically lived at the Rancho Park tennis courts I had a special friend I played tennis with.  Her parents and siblings were also at the courts and my brother was friends with the family before I was.  Off the courts Sandra and I also hung out together.  I spent a good amount of time with her family at their home and they often took me places with them.

Two days ago I realized someone I know was in her class at school and asked about her.  Sadly Sandra passed away in 2006.  Occasionally I would ask my brother if he had news of the family and it had been awhile.  I looked for Sandra on facebook and never found her & now I know why.  Sigh.

DR CILLA LIZ how do you feel that Juan is doing on his cross examination?

I think he's doing better than a lot of talking heads do.  She's a difficult witness becasue no matter what you ask she's going to have some sort of answer and she'll never be wrong.  He's doing what you have to do to get control of a witness like her.  He's slowly moving through what he needs to go through to attack her credibility.

He's already scored points on her finger not looking broken after she claims he broke it and before she killed him, that she has this altercation after she claims she caught him with photos of boys but she doesn't tell anyone, doesn't write it in her journal and has some dull back and forth messages about a car with him and even invites him to lunch the next day.  Juan has her peeking in Travis' windows after they broke up, etc.   She does not appear to be someone who is a battered woman, she seems more like a jealous control freak.  Good grief, he even has her sending out an elaborate coded message from the jail using two different magazines to meet with someone regarding their testimony in a hearing...

I'm glad I'm not defending her.  She would be a very difficult client because she thinks she is smarter than everyone else in the room. I don't know what my strategy would be. You almost have to go with whatever her story is because there is no way she wasn't going to testify and that's her decision, not the lawyers.  She has court appointed attorneys so it's the same thing as a public defender.  I think the PDs office had a conflict of some sort.

I wasn't following it, but I've become fascinated by the way she lies.  I went back and watched her 48 hours story (completely different from the current story).  She told it with about the same emotion or lack thereof that she has now.  She's really quite an interesting study in psychology.  The difference between this case and others is that she admits she killed him.  So it isn't a did she do it, it's a is it self defense, what degree is it and does she live or die. I find it fascinating.
