Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of little frozen tacos and the awakening of Spring, and now it is time for you to post until the little frozen cows come home.

And the word of the day is: RELICT!

Gyu Kaku.

BK, that's really too bad about finding your books at the book store...and of course the reason for them being there. Hopefully, because the (possibly) kept some of the books, they've realized the error of their ways and won't make the same mistake again...hopefully. :-\
-
Morning all.
That is all.

We ended up watching The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I enjoyed it, Anthony was kind of "meh" about it.
It looks like another nice day. The sun is out and it's 36. It's supposed to get up into the 50s again.

Ooh, am I getting the point right from last night that soemone was making. if not, I'm sorry - but whoever seemed to have raised the question of whether a teenager deserves to be punished for what is clearly the behavior of her parents, and not at all her own actions - if I'm getting the question right - fascinating point to ponder.
Of course, we all lost an hour sleep, except people in certain non-"spring ahead" states :)
- so maybe I missed the point thre.
-
Oh my god - just mentioning Karen Culliver in the "BK notes"o (and of course in postings last night)- such grand memories of seeing her perform, I guess especially in the 1990's but she must have been touring around rather than NY since then??? - so breathtaking. One of those people who should have been a household "theater name" - i don't get why she did not become one unless it's just that the follow-up role choices didn't pan out as hits for reasons other than her own work.
I see on google Karen Culliver tours quite a bit with the also glorious Teri Bibb, who i saw shine in that incredible FANNY at Paper Mill, and is married to someone we've been lucky to work with (and so should everyone be so lucky), Andy Umberger, and Andy seems to be on TV a lot.
-
LOL, "That incredible FANNY" - should be the title of soemthing, now that i look at it. Really, a flawed musical, but quite a production - Jose Ferrer really there charming as all get out onstage in Millburn, New Jersey - besides the incandescent Teri Bibb. I can't complain about the theater I've been fortunate enough to have seen when i look back.

Good morning, all! I only watched two of the final three epsidodes last night, so I have one more to go, and I hope to watch it later his afternoon. I turned off the lights around 11:30 and fell into a terrifying nightmare, from which I woke around 1:00 am or so. In this dream, I was inside a large house, none of the lights were working - and this may be something to do with my mther's lousy housekeeping since in our home when I was a child wwe were always running out of light bulbs, food, milk, toilet paper, and her excuse was always "I meant to buy that today . . ." - and something was lurking just outside the light. I had just got a light working when it died, and I woke quite terrified. What was really unusual about this dream was that the house I was in was neither of the houses I usually have nightmares over: my maternal grandmother's house on Tenth Avenue where something terrifying lurked out of sight in the basement and my mother and her siblings all saw the apparition on the staircase or the house I grew up in, where one heard the back foor open and close all day and where spirits walked the attic floor from around 2am to sunrise.
So, in the fifth episode all hell was breaking loose for the Morgan family: Angharrad left her abusive husband Iestyn and returned to Wales, Huw beat up the cruel school master and was expelled so he went to work in the mines, and a part of the mine collapsed killing Ivor. I expect the last episode to be as heartbreaking as the last portion of the novel.
This morning, I am off to Toyland; we are close to finishing up the last round of work on the first edit. By my calculations, we're about two-three weeks behind schedule for the first draft.

BK, I didn't weigh in last night, because everyone was offering good advice. My only other thoughts are less pleasant:
1. once you give a gift, it's out of your control; it's the receiver's decision on what to do with it, and we do not always keep what we are given.
2. they certainly didn't sell the books because they needed the money; I know from selling books during the bed bug days that booksfetch much less than the buyer wll resell them for.
3. I've had acquaintances, several DRs on this site or no longer on this site, who've never thanked me for a book, CD, DVD, whatever, or acknowledged that hey've read, watched, or listened to it; in some cases, I know it's an oversight and in others, maybe not, but that's life. I also know that, as a gift receiver who's been guilty of all the things I've mentioned, some things things get lost in life's hurlyburly.
So, if the recipients gave away or sold something you gave them, well, of course your feelings are hurt, but perhaps they never expected you to discover their actions. They might even be embarrassed that you did. I wouldn't demand they cease and desist whatever you did for the kid's act. I'd demand the billing size be doubled and my name spelled correctly.

Today I am going to see a production of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE with Brad & Lita (who will choreograph our production in August, and who is my cousin) and Ric & Shelly (who will direct our production in August). None of them have seen the show, and I have only seen a DVD of a New York production, so I am hoping it will be good.
I am taking my camera, because there may he something in the lobby of interest to those here on HHW.....maybe.

I always wondered how author's feel seeing their books in second hand shops or remainder bins.... I feel bad when I go to the Dollar Tree and see all of those WONDERFUL books that don't have homes......so I usually buy one or two.
Of course the circumstances mentioned by MR BK are completely different than what I have described. :o
-
Also weighing in from yesterday.
It's a shame that parents behave in such a despicable and having it reflect on their daughter. What kind of life lessons will that teach her? With all the time and effort you put into working with her and having Mama & Papa Rose doing what they did is "shanda".
-
Patty Duke wrote in her autobiography that she is at peace with all of her past work, except her singing. And she says she is usually confronted with one of her LP's when she is out to dinner.....and looking at the covers....make her lose her appetite.

It was in the remaindered bins of Murphy's Five & Dime in Middletown, Ohio, around 1963 that I found my hardbound copies of SAY, DARLING and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?
-
Forgot to post my favorite Chris Plummer movies
Silent Movie (he played one of the most chilling villains I have ever seen)
Murder By Decree (perhaps one of the best Sherlock Holmes ever on film)
-
Donald Sutherland movies
MASH
Kelly's Heroes
Don't Look Now
Ordinary People (Should have been nominated for an Oscar)
Bethune

I figured out my telephone problems on my own yesterday, but had to take down my book case to get at the wires. So I spent the day taking down all my books and CDs down. I had to move the book case (5 parts) away from the wall. I replaced the wire and decided to move the bookcase to another wall so in case it happens again I don't have to take everything down. So it took me the whole day to do this.

That's tremendous!
Did DR TCB say last night that he owed $5000 in taxes?

Good morning, all.
The Spring Forward on the day of a show is cruel and unusual punishment. I wonder what I did to deserve it. No, mustn't ask. Let's not go there.

That raises an interesting quandry, if slights are taken where none is meant. In BK's case, these were books actually by Bruce himself that they took an affirmative step to discard (and bring to a store, no less) a full collection of, though, but I do agree don;t blame the young teenager for her parents' decisions, and also - who knows WHEN the purging of the books happened, if it was before or after the effort to reconcile, regardless of when they showed up on the shelves of the store.
But here's a question that might be on point as to why people might receive feelings that are different than intended. What to do if the gift was so perfect for the person's taste, and you thank the person when you get it for their tatse and care and thoughtfulness - mind you, not a book or CD BY that person, where you must act accordingly - but you just somehow don't enjoy the book and maybe stop reading it, or maybe get through it but don;t enjoy it for whatever reason. Do you call the person and say well, i read it now and here's my thought about your gift, or just let it go, having thanked them for their great thoughtfulness and attention to your taste when they gave you the gift.
-
I am off to be entertained....without intermission....I shall return anon.
-
Good morning, all.
Sorry to hear about the books, BK. And sorry that this wound is still causing so much grief.
-
No, TCB, that is one gadget I don't have -- and don't want, either. I think even I would be embarrassed to use such a gizmo.

Two!

CBS Sunday Morning had a feature on Rita Moreno. It's very hard to believe that she's 81!
-
It stormed liked crazy here at about 2 in the morning with enormous winds and torrents of rain. I got up to watch the rain fall and what was coming off the roof was more like a waterfall than rain.
Couldn't really get back to sleep after that, so I left right after church and will try to get in a nap before heading off to the Paella Challenge. The winds are still up. I wouldn't want to be cooking outdoors today.

Got Sonia Sotomayor's autobiography on CD yesterday from the library. Rita does the reading. Will likely start that today.

BK,
I just caught up with yesterday's posts; read about finding your books in the used bookstore.
What can one say? It happens.
I remember when my first book came out: I gave a signed "thank you" copy to my attorney.
A few months later, I was perusing in the Cherokee Bookshop, and there was the book.
Yes, it hurt.
Incidentally, I never used that attorney's services again.

Speaking of books:
About a year ago, I purchased a copy of Michael Caine's autobiography from one of the independent booksellers on Amazon.
When it arrived, I discovered that it was an autographed copy by Caine; not inscribed to any individual.
The interesting thing is that the dealer did not advertise this book as being signed, so that was a nice surprise.
:)

Both LIFE OF PI and HITCHCOCK are being released onto DVD this week. Looking forward to renting both of them.

It's Sunday, and the sun is indeed out!

It Snowed!!! YEAH! I won't be going to flute choir as it's 30 miles from here and the road is 100% snow and ice covered. This is actually a blessing in disguise. I love flute choir, but I have to write a brief I didn't get done yesterday when I wasn't feeling well. Today I'm feeling better and will be able to focus and write without having to leave and lose the whole afternoon.
-
I do have to clear the drive, which I shall do shortly.
-
I love snow days, even on weekends.
-
We didn't get a lot of snow, maybe 3 inches or so, but there is ice underneath it, so it's not good travel weatter. Looks like another band may be coming through soon. As long as I can express mail my brief tomorrow, I'm cool with the weather today
-
Ok, time to go change clothes and go out to move snow. I actually like to do that. This is wet and heavy, so hoping the old blower will move it
-
I wouldn't demand they cease and desist whatever you did for the kid's act. I'd demand the billing size be doubled and my name spelled correctly.
By the way, I love this advice!!!!

And if you can still negotiate a higher fee....

Thank you DR TCB. The first part of the night was difficult and then I was able to sleep ok. Today I am about the same as yesterday.
-
DR TCB I'm shocked & sorry you ended up owing so much in taxes. I hope this won't ever happen again.
-
Patty Duke wrote in her autobiography that she is at peace with all of her past work, except her singing. And she says she is usually confronted with one of her LP's when she is out to dinner.....and looking at the covers....make her lose her appetite.
LOL I can see why.

Doesn't owing a lot of taxes mean you had more income that you'd thought? could that be good to know?
-
I'm up, slept till eleven because I didn't really fall asleep until about three, which, of course, was four, and eleven, of course, was really noon. I set my clocks ahead one hour (those that needed it), then set the back one hour just so I'd be ahead of the game come October. Kidding.
-
Why is it that Daylight Saving Time ends in November? That means that "real" time is actually only four, count 'em FOUR months of the year!
That's just weird.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! We are back from Lima and I'm very sleepy. Michigan basketball starts in 20 minutes - Go, Blue!

bk, sorry to hear about the book situation. I know that must have hurt, and hope you can let it go because you don't gain anything by holding on to bad feelings.
It's not quite as personal, but I can sort of relate: people have sold copies of DVDs of my films that I've given to them. It would be one thing if I had chosen on my own to give them copies, but these are people who say they want to see one or more of the films and ask me to send them copies, because they don't have Netflix, etc. (All our films are on there.)
I have to pay for these copies myself (at least 5 bucks, then packaging and mailing), but people always seems to think that since they know me, of course I would have plenty to give just away. Recently, an executive at a network here in town asked for copies of two films. Hoping to pick up some work from it, I sent them to this person; they never responded. I followed up a month later to make sure they had arrived. No response. This year I ran into them at a screening and said, "oh, by the way, did you ever get..."
"Oh yes! It was very good; I sent it on to my (insert relative here)". No "thanks for sending", etc.
Then you see used copies of films in town here and have to wonder if they just use them to trade in for other stuff.
The first time I came to NY to meet the "director" of the Mercer doc (after brunching with some of the HHWers) he asked for 3 or 4 copies of our films to give to Mr. Eastwood and co. as samples of my work. It didn't take 5 minutes before, after I helped him down to the street, he used one to tip the guy who had carried up his groceries the day before. Right in front of me!
So, bk, I feel your pain...
-
I'm always afraid of having a yard sale and someone showing up and seeing something they gave me as a present for sale. People give me things that they think I might like, or something they think is my style and are way off base. So if there's any question, I usually donate it to Goodwill; at least removing the geographical link. I have a 1BR, 1BA house, and there's just not enough room to keep everything. Even if I love the person who gave it to me, if it's something I can use or don't want, better to pass it on to someone who would!
-
Regarding signed books:
I went to the estate sale of a neighbor whose garden I had always admired. I knew her garden designer and he had given me a tour of the gardens but I was always intrigued by the house.
Unfortuately, she passed away 2 years ago and her son finally decided to sell the house.
I have never been in a house so full of the personality of the owner. She had made it completely her own; did things I've never seen anyone else do in a house, including covering the ceiling of one room in moss. There were also moss lamps and all sorts of interesting things there. The house was jam-packed with unique things, hand-painted murals, shells covering fireplaces and ceiling corners, tons of antiques...just incredible, but a big jumble, too. Oh, and Chanel handbags and very expensive, tiny shoes, wild clothing...it made me sad that I had never gotten to meet this woman, although I had tried to in years past because I loved her garden so much.
There was a wonderful gardening book-$40 so beyond my budget right now--and I opened it to see an inscription from her son date 2002, a birthday gift from her son in which he wished for many more years of them being able to garden together. That made me a verklempt so I had to leave the sale. Another reminder that life is short. So I'm going to go out and garden right now!
-
And there's page 3!
-
Elmore, thanks so much for the men in gold lamé photo. The guy on the left had very impressive...musculature!
-
Of course, Cason may have, too...it just wasn't as apparent...
-
And I am home.
-
Time for a nap.
-
I had a hard time working at the AAUW book sale in 2008 because we had donated most of my late mother-in- law's books when we cleaned out her apartment in 2007.
-
Juliana has come and gone, we're finally fully cast save for our guest star - hoping to know about THAT today. Shortly I shall be on my way to the Wood of West to lunch.
-
Fascinating to me that all our GUESTS have disappeared. Makes you wonder.
-
Ooh, there's a guest.

So great to see a little mini-frenzy from edisaurus

I just put this comment up in the times comments, but it is intersting what a big deal james franco being bad at the oscars once was, and now that Seth MacFarlane was so controversial, it clears the way for James Franco to be a box office golden boy again. Was Seth MacFarlane getting bad reaction a plot by the studio?
James Franco’s Oscars hosting mishap is completely forgiven. (Seth MacFarlane can also hope for a full recovery!)
Tune of Off To See The Wizard
We’re off to see James Franco
He’s playing the wizard of Oz
His stock’s gone up ‘cause we forgot
What an odd Oscar host he was
Despite what an odd Oscar host he was
James Franco is off the hook because
Because, because, because, because, because
Because this year’s host got more wicked buzz

DR Edisaurus: Good Lord.

DR Druxy: The seller hadn't said anything about the book I mentioned last night being signed, either. But he wasn't an experienced book seller, though he did also have a few truly rare items. He was the original owner and just getting rid of some things after so many years.

So the expression should now be:
I've now come to depend on the nastiness of strangers, and be delighted when a little kindness shows up every now and then.

Keith spends many hours doing genealogy research and has been very gracious sharing his information & helping others with their research. It it shocking how few people express their appreciation for what he has done and even worst, how many will not share their research in return.
Now he limits access to his information to those who won't share back & stops doing research for those who can't say thank you.

Edi - I cannot believe that idiot used your DVD as a tip!
and especially to do so in front of you when he specifically said they were going to Mr Eastwood

Watching Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation. It's one of my sister's favorites. Jimmy Stewart is amusing.

That was a cute movie.

Indiana 72, Michigan 71 - congratulations to the Hoosiers on their Big Ten title!

vixdad and I are watching the series Parades End on HBO on demand

I hate this daylight savings time nonsense!

When I used to have to drive the boys home in the dark I hated to see the end of daylight saving & wished it never ended. Now that I don't need the extra daylight I have it-lol.

Back from a nice lunch with dear reader Jeanne at Lenny's Deli, the deli that took over for Junior's in the Wood of West. The good news is the food is much better than Junior's. Nowhere near Langer's or Nate 'n' Al's, but good. In fact, the kishka is better than Langer's and just under Nate's. The pastrami is good, but not great, but better than Jerry's certainly. They had some very good looking mac-and-cheese so I ordered a side - that was the most disappointing and I only had a couple of bites. We also ordered two potato pancakes - obviously not as good as Langer's, but better than Jerry's and better than most I've had.
-
I have been waiting for you to lunch together at Lenny's. Thanks for the report. Did you check if they have egg bagels?
-
Hello, everyone.
It was nice to see BK again and also to try out Lenny's. I ordered fish and chips, which wasn't bad. Maybe not the best test for a Jewish deli. BK ordered several dishes to try so we could both taste them. I would agree with BK--good, but not great. I'm pleased, though, that we do still have a deli in the 'hood.
-
Jane, I think your question was addressed to BK, but I'll say that I didn't check for egg bagels.
-
We received an unintentionally funny email from Keith's cousin. She went for a walk in Venice with her parent's and sent a photo of a synagogue they passed that his aunt said Keith had his Bar Mitzvoh.
We were surprised to learn this since his Bar Mitzvah was at a little Orthodox synagogue on Robertson's near their house. Keith did attend one in Venice before they moved but this wasn't the one ;D
-
Jane, I think your question was addressed to BK, but I'll say that I didn't check for egg bagels.
Either of you. If you don't know I expect Bruce doesn't.
My usual order at Junior's was a toasted egg bagel & a soft boiled egg. They did both very well. When Jerry's first opened they did that ok but then their egg bagels became tasteless.
-
Oh, and thanks for responding. I wish I could have joined you for lunch.
-
Now I'm hungry for deli food. Wonder if we should go to Izzy's sometime?
-
I do not know what an egg bagel is. What is the difference?

I loved Nate 'n' Al's so much. I tried to work in a Beverly Hills visit the last time I went to L.A. in May, but the scheduling didn't work out.
-
BK and DR Jeanne walked (and ate) on hallowed ground today.
-
Got to relax over a little MY GEISHA this evening. Beautiful score, and of course a great disc.

I do not know what an egg bagel is. What is the difference?
There is egg in the batter, kind of like the difference between white bread and challah. I don't know how else to explain it.

It doesn't feel like time yet.....

Paella Challenge over.

Bible study group gone home.

Time for "The Opposite Sex" with Dolores Gray, June Allyson and Ann Miller. But the beginning is not "The Women."
-
Nope. Letting men into the picture is a definite hindrance.

I do know challah. I wonder if egg bagels are sold around here. The main shop i go to only has sesame or poppy or pumpernickel bagels.

The last thing Arizona needs in the summer is MORE daylight! So I am glad we have the sense to pass on Daylight Savings Time.

I wish we could pass on it.

Now I'm hungry for deli food. Wonder if we should go to Izzy's sometime?
I wish we had a deli in Austin.

I wish we had a deli in Austin.
And one for San Antonio, too.

One more.

Hello, six guests!

Page five? Five pages? And what's with the disappearing GUESTS. We haven't had this low a GUEST count in a 'coon's age. I feel that soon we will be the most popular site on all the Internet.

Did i mention our lovely dinner at Virgil's with friends from Arizona? (They had seen among them two different plays, The Lion king and Edie Falco in The Madrid, two very different events.) Skip had appetizers with us and then he had to go to a perfromance on the Upper West Side, but I was glad he was able to join us for a while as three of the people from Scottsdale at the table had never met him before. Some of them were still on Arizona time physically (much earlier) so while I was tired, they were anxious toe xplore New York since they are only here a few days.
We found out at their hotel that their hoped-for plans for tomorrow, Statue of liberty and Elli Island, are still being repaired after Hurricane Sandy.

vixmom - Thank you so much!

I'm glad to hear you are feeling better so quickly.
I needed sleep. Today it started catching up with me a little. I took an Advil Cold and Sinus and that helped.

Finished with my viewing.

Haven't been to Virgil's in a 'coon's age.

There are autographed books at the Dollar Tree?
-
Anyone coming to see me in Washington?
-
Night, all.
-
DR John G....I read your posts together as "The Bible study group has gone home. Time for the opposite sex!"

It was in the remaindered bins of Murphy's Five & Dime in Middletown, Ohio, around 1963 that I found my hardbound copies of SAY, DARLING and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?
That's tremendous!
Did DR TCB say last night that he owed $5000 in taxes?
No typos, no misprints. The figure stands.

We had a blizzard today. That made me happy. I spent hours and hours working on stuff for the office and will have to finish up tomorrow. All the schools are 2 hours late and some roads are closed etc. I'll have to dig out again, but should be able to get to the office and finish up the project I worked on all day in time to express mail it to the court.
-
I should be sleeping, but have to unwind a little from working

bk, sorry to hear about the book situation.
People's behavior amazes me!

Actually, Fred, I very foolishly believed my brother in law when he told me that the figure I was receiving as Social Security Disability was After taxes. He had been on Disability for several years, so I assumed he knew what he was saying.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
I should be loading songs into iTunes but it's Sunday and I just don't damn feel like it. So, I'll have a busy morning tomorrow.

Seven GUESTS. Pathetic, but I kind of like it.

I just put this comment up in the times comments, but it is intersting what a big deal james franco being bad at the oscars once was, and now that Seth MacFarlane was so controversial, it clears the way for James Franco to be a box office golden boy again. Was Seth MacFarlane getting bad reaction a plot by the studio?
James Franco’s Oscars hosting mishap is completely forgiven. (Seth MacFarlane can also hope for a full recovery!)
Tune of Off To See The Wizard
We’re off to see James Franco
He’s playing the wizard of Oz
His stock’s gone up ‘cause we forgot
What an odd Oscar host he was
Despite what an odd Oscar host he was
James Franco is off the hook because
Because, because, because, because, because
Because this year’s host got more wicked buzz
We’re off to see James Franco
He’s playing the wizard of Oz

Bravo, Fred. I think that is my all-time favorite!

Keith is from Italy?

Alone again... Naturally.

Alone again... Naturally.
Speaking of that, I listened to several old songs today on YouTube. In addition to Gilbert O'Sullivan, I watched and listened to several Janis Ian songs, some Reba and Brent in ANNiE GET YOUR GUN. I watched a few more things and then ended up watching Brent sing "Beautiful Boys."
