Have been trying to watch THE CARELESS YEARS, a 1957 teen angst film, but it is a tough slog. I normally love these 1950s teen films, but this one is just kind of strange, and the lead actress, Natalie Trundy, is kind of odd.

It is only a 70 minutes long film, but it feels like I have been watching it for about 4 hours and it is still not over.

The only good thing about it is Barbara Billingsley as the mother. She has some excellent scenes.

Even the poster is not on par with similar films of the era.

TOD: I saw Carol Channing do "Dolly!" on two separate tours. I think I preferred her in the second, which was the one recreated by Leroy Reams, the production that BK recorded. I know from BK's book that the recording session was not ideal, but the charms of the production were abundant and I am glad to have the recording as a souvenir.

Channing trusts her talents, knows her limitations and that may be why she's best. The many local productions I've seen all feature women who can sing, but who think they should sound like Barbra Streisand and it doesn't work on stage. They push their voices to far and it rarely sounds great.

DR MBARNUM Natalie Trundy was also in MR HOBBS TAKES A VACATION and a couple of the later PLANET OF THE APES movies, because she was married to their producer Arthur P. Jacobs, after being his girlfriend for a few years.

She is also rather infamous because at Jacobs' funeral, Warren Beatty asked her out - and she accepted.

I have never seen a professional production of HELLO, DOLLY!

I have been in a couple of local productions....  I enjoy the show very much and can't quite imagine a "stripped down" version.  If you're going to strip it down, why not do a great production of THE MATCHMAKER?

Wow, at 6:00, a hebrew version by Hannah Maron - who had been a major stage musical comedy star in israel in the 1960's until she had a leg amputated after a grenade attack in 1970, according to wikipedia.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAPmFKUsKFo

She was able to resume her acting career a while later, and did this appearance in 1986, and did this appearance in a role that had been a triumph for her in the 1960's before the violent attack - this was obviously an emotional experience of "Hello Dolly" in hebrew.

Before it is a rendition of EVITA's Don't Cry for Me, Argentina in Hebrew.  very nice translation, too.

Good morning, all! I got home around 12:30 last night, caught up on all of yesterday's posts and collapsed. I slept quite well, but I am very tired.

I met Bruce Pomahac at his place around 4:15, and we visited and listened to a bit of DEAREST ENEMY. Then we taxied to 22nd and Seventh for a fantastic dinner at Restivo, which may now be my favorite Italian restaurant. After that, we headed to the Irish Rep for DONNYBROOK. This show was, in my opinion, a second rate musical in its original incarnation, and the Irish Rep version doesn;t alter my opinion or succeed in making it any less a twee faux-Irish piece, no matter how good the production is or how well it's performed.

The good things: a smart little band arranged by Joshie and conducted by my friend John Bell, a mostly wonderful cast and some nice staging. The cast has some  fine character actors and two wonderfully funny performances by Samuel Cohen and Kathy Fitzgerald in the principal comic roles. While I've liked the leading man in other shows, I sadly found him lackluster and out of touch with the boisterousness of the production. Here, it's a John Wayne role without a John Wayne

I don't know the original DONNYBROOK libretto, so I don't know how this production revises it. I find this script, based on The Quiet Man, rather offensive and the secondary characters rather twee.  The leading lady may have a bully for a brother, but she's not too pleasant herself; she finds no sympathy in why her husband, a fighter who killed a man in the ring, won't beat up her brother over something she feels is her honor, and I'm surprised this production, which interpolates other Jimmy Burke songs along with Irish folk music and sentimental Irish ballads, didn't give her and all her Irish neighbors "Next To Fightin' I Like Lovin'" as well.

So, after the show, Bruce and I waited to see our friend Donna Kane, who played the leading lady, and I spoke to Patrick Cummings, who I think should have played the lead, and other friends in the cast and band. After that Joshie, John, and harpist Karen Lindquist went to Restivo with most of the cast for a drink. That was a great deal of fun, and then I stumbled home.

BK, I see this production of HELLO DOLLY! is directed by a person I wouldn't ask to sweep a stage, much less move a cast about one.  I think he's one of the most inept and maladroit members of his profession. The emperor may have new clothes in DC, but I don't see them.

Aside from the movie, the only stage production of HELLO, DOLLY! I've seen was in Los Angeles with Ginger Rogers and David Burns.

I know she's great, but I've never been a big fan of Carol Channing.  I did see her on stage in Seattle when she did a tour with George Burns, and also in Los Angeles at the Shubert in LORELI ( think it was called that.) , a "sequel" to GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES.

I saw Carol Channing in the Abe Burrows-David Merrick production FOUR ON A GARDEN (which went on to flop for some reason, although it looks formn my notes like it was an absolute  howl to the audience I saw it with, which included Art Carney right near us and Sheila MacRae who really took time and wrote a lovely sweet note when she gave her autograph and I recall seemed amused in a good way that an 11-year-old Carol Channing fan was at a sex farce) - the show co-starred Sid Caesar and featured George S. irving.  And also in it was a very charming young actor, who i see from a little "review' i wrote for a class paper at school on what we did during our school vacations, did indeed make an impression on me in a few small but I guess  bit showy roles -

Saturday afternoon greetings!  I was up early this morning to help clear out the AAUW book sale site.  We've had a more or less permanent site at the mall for several years for the rock-bottom rent of $700/ year.  The new owners of the mall wanted to raise the rent beyond our means, so we've vacated that space, stored the better books and our tables in various homes, and are on the lookout for a new venue.

Now I'm home to watch Michigan basketball - Go, Blue!

Helper got the computer - of course they replaced the hard drive as I knew they most likely would because of the recall.  So, she made them show her the steps, then she brought it home and called Apple so they'd be on the phone with her.  She got through the first steps fine then was asked for my wireless network password.  She texted me and I gave it to her so that was fine.  She then chose transfer information from Time Machine, and it began what could be a nine-hour transfer.  That, too, is ridiculous.  I really don't want it to complete the transfer without her being there and, of course, if it were to take the full nine hours Apple Care would be conveniently gone in case we had any problems, which I certainly hope we don't.  Right now, it's saying another seven hours and fifty minutes, but I cannot imagine why it would take so long given the fact that I have less than a third of the total amount of gigs actually in use.  She'll stick around and/or come back in a bit but everything appears to be working fine.

When I was in DC years ago, there was a performance on in the theater, so we couldn't go inside.

However, we did go into the house across the street and saw the bed where Lincoln died.  They still had the pillow with his blood on it, wrapped in some sort of clear material.

We are in for another snowstorm starting tomorrow and continuing into Monday.  It looks like we'll get to Lima and back, provided we skedaddle out of there as soon as we can after church.

Yesterday at lunch, one of our group said that he and his wife were planning on spending a week this summer at the Shakespeare Festival.  Another member told him not to miss eating at Ashland's very best restaurant.  I didn't think i had ever heard you mention it.

I haven't heard anyone mention it in awhile.  I just never had anything there I especially enjoyed.  Bryan liked it and so did Keith.  I guess no one has felt the need to return.  It is a shame that we aren't big fans of any of the restaurants here.

In nice weather I like to take guests to Kobe, the Japanese restaurant I enjoy, and sit with a view of the creek.

I heard TAMING OF THE SCREW is good even though it has been modernized.

I don't know that I'd go to the actual service, but afterward they are asking people to line the street from the high school to the outskirts of town.  It's about 3 miles give or take.  He is being buried in a nearby town.   So the entire length of town will be  lined with people and the 2000 flags.   I think it's an amazing tribute.

Wow, that is something to have such a great turn out to honor him.

It was horrible having to get up so early today. But we had 5,000 people running, making it the largest 5K in the city. Then we poured case after case of wine for the folks crossing the finish line. It was fun, but exhausting. I came home and slept for four hours. Still feel tired.

You worked hard but it sounds like fun.

Greetings from the airport, a very small airport like Burbank, kind of.  So, no real Priority line like in LA although I got right through in a minute and through security very quickly although they, unlike LA, made first class go through that nauseating scanner thing.   Additionally, some goon also patted down my stomach even though I went through the scanner fine.  Unbelievable.

Did you raise your arms going through the scanner?  It might have been the new kind that picks up zippers & other things.  The good part is you don't need a full body check, they did do a quick one where the whatever shows up on their screen.

Mine was totally quick since I had loads of pockets on my pants with zippers.

Not sure if I want to go to Ford's Theater now!

When I was in DC years ago, there was a performance on in the theater, so we couldn't go inside.

However, we did go into the house across the street and saw the bed where Lincoln died.  They still had the pillow with his blood on it, wrapped in some sort of clear material.

Just as I was walking up to the pool to swim today, to my joy the woman in the single lane got out.
I jumped in, cautious of my hip which did fine.  Those first strokes in the pool with the feel of the water against me as I swim is always a treat, something I anticipate with a bit of excitement.

I suppose it was silly of me to expect my body to respond as it normally does.  As soon as I began kicking, which of course was immediately, I felt a stab of pain in my hip & great disappointment in my heart.

I swam more slowly and adjusted the way I kicked which helped some.  I also did the breaststroke more as the frog kick didn't hurt nearly as much.

DR Jane :(

My right shoulder has still been hurting. It doesn't really bother me. But i wake up every morning in pain. I think it's because i sleep on it. And to get out of a waterbed you have to put a lot pressure on your shoulders.

So of course today my niece smacks me as hard as she can right in my right shoulder. :)

My first trip to New York in 1969, my friend and I got tickets to see Pearl Bailey
and the all-black cast of HELLO, DOLLY!  Once you have seen Gower Champion's choreography, nothing else ever compares.  Still, in 1983 I saw a great production in the West End of London that starred Danny La Rue, the female impersonator.  The production was wonderful, as was Mr. La Rue.

Thanks Vixmom.  I've actually started telling people and rather than fear, I feel relief and a lot of the excitement I felt back when I applied to be a judge.   I cancelled my state contract for criminal defense about a month ago.   I've been saying no to new federal appointments but haven't officially gotten off the list.   I'm ready to do that now.  I'll probably write the email tomorrow.  I'll still be working hard,, but there will be fewer nights and weekends and I will have more of an office practice.  It will mean the end of jury trials, but I'll still have hearings before the immigation judges.   This is a change I look forward to.  Thanks for all the good wishes.

I am home.  The good news is I'm posting this from the big boy computer.  It was JUST finishing as I walked in the door.  Despite being told that everything would be exactly as it was, it wasn't.  Not terrible, no disasters exactly, but very frustrating.  Word would not launch without a product key - that took me a half hour to find, but finally that was working.  iTunes had to download the latest version even though it should have been in the Time Machine saved, same with the printer - it had to download some components.  I have no idea how many of my preferences have changed - certainly Word did not launch documents at the computer starting up, which was a preference.  I remembered how to do that, so that's now working properly.  Also, about six updates that I'd already done had to be done again.  Time Machine is not working at all - it says not configured, but that's not something I'm doing without speaking to someone.  Thankfully, all my saved usernames and passwords seem to have come over so that's good.
Title: Re: COMING HOME
Post by: bk on March 23, 2013, 09:32:50 PM
Okay, got Time Machine configured so that should do its first lengthy back-up in about thirty seconds.  I think the stuff that didn't come over are things where I didn't have the lock clicked.

Today was a day.  I went to secretary/treasurer training for my union.  I learned a lot of stuff and hopefully will actually be able to remember some of it. ;) The training was held at a hotel in SeaTac, next to the airport, so it was very easy to find and the traffic (being a Saturday morning) was no problem at all.  Even the ride back had no traffic slowdowns.  Since I got home, I've just been watching TV but I did take out the trash and some recyclables earlier, so that's done for a while.

Topic of the Day:  the only professional production of Hello, Dolly! that I've seen was in Seattle in 2009 with Jenifer Lewis.  She was very good and I really enjoyed the show.

Capital Playhouse here in Olympia did the show just last season.  All the performers were good and I remember that they used Gower Champion's original choreography, which was wonderful and actually done well.
